BuzzJack Music Forum _ Pop _ Charlie Puth - Attention

Posted by: JosephStyles🐶 20th April 2017, 04:11 PM

There's a surprise release from a "big male" artist tomorrow and reports are indicating that it's Charlie Puth, with what Scott Mills says is the best thing he's done so far! ohmy.gif I loved his album way more than I expected to so I'm really excited for what might be coming.

Posted by: Jonjo 20th April 2017, 04:15 PM

I'm quite excited for this. His album was "ok" for the most part, just very corny. 'One Call Away' is still my fave from him, but 'We Don't Talk Anymore' is right up there with 'See You Again' too. (Everyone else can have 'Marvin Gaye' - I'm not claiming that one x)

EDIT: I think I underestimated his star power. All his big hits (so not including 'Dangerously' - 45m) have over 400m views on Youtube! ohmy.gif I had no idea he was THAT big tbh. The video to 'We Don't Talk Anymore' is really close to crossing a billion views!

So hyped!! <3 Loved the first album!

I am really hyped for this gah ohmy.gif

Posted by: JosephStyles🐶 20th April 2017, 04:22 PM

Charlie's quite quietly notched up some good numbers over his first era tbh! Each single outpeaked the previous one in the US, and all were good-sized hits in the UK also, alongside a gold-selling album. More than I ever expected for him really!

The singles from his debut didn't particularly grab me, although I did find the album a very pleasant listen, but I still find myself looking forward to what his second album will have to offer. I've been watching clips of him where he's been talking about music and his influences and it's really great to see someone be so invested and passionate about not only their own music but music in general.

From AllAccess:

QUOTE
Last night (4/19), CHARLIE PUTH premiered his new single in an immersive music exhibit on MELROSE AVENUE in LOS ANGELES called "THE ATTENTION ROOM." PUTH’s new single “Attention” - the first release from his forthcoming sophomore album and follow-up to his RIAA Platinum certified debut "NINE TRACK MIND," will arrive worldwide at all online retailers tonight at 11p (EST).

The Attention Room features an LED infinity tunnel - soundtracked to PUTH’s new single “Attention” - with a visual experience architected around the concept of “receiving attention.” More specifically, the visualization within the tunnel replicates the brain’s reaction to receiving attention.

From Idolator:

QUOTE
Charlie Puth is back! The singer/songwriter, who established himself as one of pop’s hottest new talents with debut LP Nine Track Mind, launched the first single from his sophomore set in “an immersive music exhibit” called The Attention Room. What does that mean exactly? Well, Artist Partner Group (APG) and Atlantic Records, in partnership with Spotify, have created a space that replicates the brain’s reaction to receiving attention. It achieves this via an LED infinity tunnel and Charlie’s very good new banger, “Attention.”

If you happen to be in Los Angeles, you can check it out for yourself. The Attention Room, which is located at 8017 Melrose Ave, will be open to the public until April 30. (The hours of operation are 7pm – 11pm on weekdays and 1pm – 11pm on the weekend). As for the single? It’s a stone cold smash. Co-written by Charlie & J Kash, “Attention” completely rebrands the singer. Gone are the doo-wop bops and loved-up ballads. This is a dancefloor-friendly anthem with an edge. The song drops at 11pm ET tonight.

Now that description sounds REALLY exciting ohmy.gif

Drops 4am here in the UK then! Surprisingly VERY excited for this, I was a fan of We Don't Talk Anymore and the description sounds right up my street!! biggrin.gif

Posted by: Ultra💚🚦🐱 20th April 2017, 06:31 PM

i'm ready.

(if I was still on half term I'd genuinely stay up for this laugh.gif )

You're wrong angel.gif That's quite easily his weakest single so far for me.

Excited by the description! Hope this era does a good job of showing a different side to him because as much as I enjoyed his first album, I've found him very one sided so far x

Posted by: mr_pmt 20th April 2017, 06:41 PM

He's very much what I would describe as "beige", although I would like to properly enjoy something of his.

Posted by: LustForLife 20th April 2017, 10:11 PM

So far I've only liked "We Don't Talk Anymore" of his material, but that description sounds promising!!

Posted by: award♀nary 20th April 2017, 10:14 PM

Maybe the surprise is a featured artist to appear on the track... ohmy.gif

Pretty much exactly what I was going to say laugh.gif Well Marvin Gaye was ok for a bit but quickly got cringe and boring.

---------

His voice is a bit bland so I think he needs a banger with exciting production to elevate his material a bit more.

Posted by: Jonjo 21st April 2017, 02:25 AM

With people saying that "a big male artist is gonna surprise release" or whatever, makes me think that he's actually gonna be pretty big with this next era. It's gonna be on a similar circumstance to The Weeknd just before he released 'Starboy' I think. (Except not quite that high obviously)

TUNE.

I really hope his work with Alicia Keys makes the album when it gets released, that would be something to hear wub.gif

Posted by: Jonjo 21st April 2017, 09:13 AM

Hmm.. not sure what I think of it. I think I like it, but it's not as different to a couple of his stuff from the debut, to make me think it's a life changing new sound for him... it could grow on me I spose.

Posted by: danG 21st April 2017, 10:48 AM

Oh this is actually good. ohmy.gif Loving the chill production and bass guitar prominence and his voice works for the song too.

Posted by: Harry♀ 21st April 2017, 11:10 AM

Really good song he has made even if it will take me a while to fully adapt to this sound as I liked the last era's sound

Posted by: Liаm 21st April 2017, 11:10 AM

This is kinda shite, I like the production but his voice is still so bland and the vocals feel a bit plodding and clunky like they don't fit with the song :/

Posted by: JosephStyles🐶 21st April 2017, 12:52 PM

Really liking this! Different for him but not totally removed from his previous stuff. Love the chilled vibe it has.

I was a bit cautious based on the "dancefloor anthem with an edge" description - usually that would get me excited but I wasn't too sure how it would sound like in a Charlie Puth song - but this works very well! The bassline reminds me of Kanye's 'Fade'; a very foot-tapping beat and the chorus subtly works on you. I can see myself really liking this.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 21st April 2017, 09:57 PM

I like this MUCH more than anything else he's put his name to.

Posted by: liamk97 24th April 2017, 05:57 PM

Posted by: Cameron 24th April 2017, 09:45 PM

This is a bit shite laugh.gif

Posted by: ~josh~ 25th April 2017, 03:07 PM

At first I thought this was just but nice but boring like 'Dangerously' but it's growing on me although still the not on the same level of tunage as WDTAM & One Call Away!

Anyone else thought the line was 'turtle on my knee' rather than 'dirt all on my name' tho?!?!?!

Posted by: Liаm 25th April 2017, 04:21 PM

This is growing slowly, the production is good but I still find his vocal a bit jarring laugh.gif

Posted by: Liаm 28th April 2017, 01:05 AM

Ok I f***ing LOVE this now. It is so funky and such a bop *.*

Yup, same!

Posted by: Cody S. Berry 1st May 2017, 03:14 PM

omg this is TOTALLY a Bella Thorne diss track

Posted by: Liаm 1st May 2017, 04:54 PM

Good, that makes it even better

Posted by: Jonjo 1st May 2017, 05:47 PM

I'm just not warming to this at all! sad.gif Really gutted tbh, because it seems to be his broadest appealing song, but I'm just not feeling it </3

Posted by: Kye 1st May 2017, 09:42 PM

I absolutely love this. I'm living for how it builds and the final chorus smashes.
Bella Thorne diss track is what spring to mind for me too! She seems the kinda girl to just want attention..

Posted by: Liаm 6th May 2017, 02:08 AM

Good lord this is creeping up on Shawn Mendes - There's Nothing Holding Me Back and Julia Michaels - Issues as song of the year. I never thought that Charlie Puth and Shawn Mendes would potentially have my top 2 songs of 2017 so far laugh.gif

Posted by: Jonjo 7th May 2017, 07:31 AM

Took longer than expected but I am coming round to this! Starting to get really into it.

Posted by: Dobbo 22nd May 2017, 09:29 PM

This is really good, very catchy.

Posted by: Cameron 23rd May 2017, 11:11 AM

I take back my earlier statement, this is a bop.

Posted by: jw123 6th June 2017, 06:04 PM

still cant get over how good this song is

Posted by: cqmerqn 14th August 2017, 06:20 PM

Attention has given Charlie his first top 5 in the US, it climbs 2 spots to #5 on the Billboard Hot 100!
