A note about the singles chart runs included in this thread:

The Top 200 chart runs (from 1996, to 29th April 2001) are sourced from the "Hit Music" charts, as used by http://www.zobbel.de/ website. Beyond that date, the Top 200s are sourced from the "Official Charts Company" charts. These two charts differed. "Hit Music" chart was a Top 200 list of the best selling singles, i.e. #200 was the 200th best seller of the week. However, in the "Official Charts Company" ("OCC") chart, only the Top 75 singles were the best sellers in order; the 76-200 section featured "compressed positions", which means that certain titles were removed from the chart.

OCC's old rules regarding their 76-200 section: "A single which, in the normal course of events, would appear between positions 76 and 200 of the combined Singles Chart is excluded if its sales have fallen for two or more consecutive weeks AND have fallen by more than 20% in the past week. Once excluded in this way, a record will only re-appear in the chart if its sales increase. Records excluded by this rule are shown on the printed chart report with their sales index and asterisks (***) in place of a chart position."

All the Top 200 chart runs from 6th May 2001 to 10th April 2005 are from OCC's "compressed" charts, which will explain the seemingly sudden drop outs from the charts & the erratic re-entries that occur; you'll see this clearly in the chart runs of their solo releases from these years.

From Wannabe (July 1996) up to the release of Mel B's 'Feels So Good' (February 2001) I've included the Hit Music Top 200 chart run and the Official Charts Company Top 100 chart run (as posted on their website).

From 17th April 2005 (which incidentally is when digital download sales were first introduced), the OCC scrapped their "compressed" rule and began showing the actual best selling singles in order, just like the old Hit Music charts. From this date up until 12th March 2006, they expanded to a Top 250. However, from 19th March 2006 the OCC reduced to a Top 200 again. From this date until the end of 2006, a song was allowed to chart on the strength of downloads alone for 1 week prior to a physical release (as can be seen with Emma Bunton's 'Downtown'). January 2007 marked the first time that all songs were allowed to chart if they were available to download, regardless of whether a physical format existed.

A note about first week sales:

Official Charts Company retroactively downgraded sales from 1994-1996. I find it too complicated to explain why this happened, but if you're interested in knowing more then Google search: "1994-1996 DUS Panel Gallup Buzzjack" (without the quotation marks) - it brings up some old threads where it's discussed. This therefore affects Spice (the album), Wannabe, Say You'll Be There and 2 Become 1. This has resulted in different total sales and first week sales reported for these titles, over the years.

A lot of the first week sales data comes from Music Week and Official Charts Company. However there are some releases (mainly solo) where the original source couldn't be found, while some figures are estimates.

A 2-Track CD single followed on 10th December 2019, released with the title "Live at the Royal Albert Hall". 1000 copies of this limited edition release were available for a short time via her official store. This CD doesn't have a barcode, meaning that sales data would not have been submitted to Official Charts Company. The sales data below is just downloads and streaming. The title of the CD release is misleading, in that it doesn't actually contain live tracks - it is the studio versions of the aforementioned songs. The item was referred to as being a "Royal Albert Hall CD Programme", despite the fact that this particular version wasn't actually available at the show itself, which took place on 6th December 2019. A https://www.discogs.com/Emma-Bunton-Live-at-Royal-Albert-Hall/release/14498574 of the CD was available from the venue, with only 100 copies being available.

1st single from 'Schizophonic'

Note: The chart from 4th July 1999 suffered from having missing sales data (from Virgin & Our Price stores), which resulted in an inaccurate chart being aired/published. This affected Look at Me in its 8th week on sale, which was originally shown to be #48. In February 2015, the correct chart was published via the Official Charts website, and it was revealed that 'Look at Me' should have placed at #52! I've kept the position as being #48 in its "Hit Music" chart run, but for the OCC chart run I've changed that 8th week position to #52. See Mel B's 'Word Up' entry for further details about this incorrect chart.

I think it's a bit of a reach to say they weren't that big. First week sales of 2 Become 1 of over 429,000 copies in an era with no downloads or streaming suggests that actually, they were. 429,000 physical CD sales in one week is just astronomical sales by any standard. Achieving that NOW with downloads and streaming would be a mean feat let alone back then without them. How many acts have sold 429,000 copies of a single (sales ONLY) recently? Ed Sheeran? Possibly the only one? Maybe Despacito? Look how long they both had to be number 1 before getting anywhere near that sales only total.

The SG had the best selling Comic Relief single of the 90's despite both Mama and Who Do You Think You Are featuring on the album that had already been out over four months by that point.

Even after Geri left, with Goodbye, they still managed over 330,000 sales in their first week. It was also, up until recently because of streams, their fourth biggest selling single.

Yes, they made a huge mistake leaving it so long between Goodbye and Holler, and yes, they did lose a lot of sales because of this. However, suggesting they weren't that big is a controversial claim especially when the sales speak for themselves.

Thanks for posting, Liam! That's a nice increase! I wonder when SUYL will become a "millionaire" - maybe in another couple of years at this rate?

Obviously 910k and 932k are approximates, but it works out as SUYL selling roughly 102 sales per day since its 19th March update. If Say You'll Be There had also sold 102 sales a day since its last update (back in July), it would have become a "millionaire" this week. Maybe even sooner than that, given it most likely achieves higher streams than Spice Up Your Life (it's higher on Spotify). It'd be nice to have confirmation. It's a pity that it didn't do it in time for the OCC's published list.

Making it available on Spotify UK again really should be a top priority for their label! GH's total sales figure would have been a lot bigger than 515k if it had remained available, and it's likely missing out on spending many weeks inside the UK albums Top 200. *

This week it sold 1,312 copies [610 Downloads, 540 Streaming Units (the majority of this must come from Apple Music) & 162 CDs].

* Its sales increased by 161.4% this week, which means it sold 502 copies the week before. It took 759 copies to make it into the Top 200 that week. So if it was on Spotify, its weekly sales would likely be enough for it to make the Top 200 without any effort. Frustrating!

Awesome that it has passed the half a million mark I'm well chuffed with that considering in it's initial run it only went platinum and now it is closer to double platinum that platinum. Fingers crossed that the girls get their act together and tour this year to try push the GH over the double platinum border. Getting it on Spotify would help too, but actually I think it's more credit to them that they have achieved this mainly on physicals and downloads alone, you go girls!

515k is incredible when it was just over platinum at the end of the reunion tour. I hope that any new package this year is a re-release with enhancements rather than a whole new product, so that they can keep building on it.

A reissue with a vinyl edition of the main disc and a CD/Download/Stream release with a bonus disc of tracks (some of the amazing b-sides such as 'Walk of Life' and 'Take Me Home' with some unreleased tracks 'Spice Is Back', 'Angels', 'Song For Her', 'Woman' etc)

Yeah I think a re-issue with a bonus CD and a vinyl is the way forwards. They are unlikely to sell alot of a brand new GH (as only die hard fans will buy a second one), wheres a re-issue will count towards the sales of the current GH and should easily push it over double platinum.

I mean, the GH shifts around 20k per year at this point without being available on Spotify, so just them being active and actually doing things should be able to push it to double platinum. Their priority for it should be to get it on Spotify, get it re-stocked in supermarkets, get it on vinyl and a bonus disc. Somewhat in that order.

Emma Bunton Singles & Albums posts on the first page are now completed! I'm sorry it's taking me so long to complete this thread; I still haven't posted the information for Melanie C & Geri Halliwell. A work in progress!

While I was adding Emma info, I discovered a relatively recent sales total for Life in Mono! Official Charts Company revealed it had sold 53,510 copies as of 25th April 2016. They mentioned this in the comments section of http://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/number-1-this-week-in-2001-emma-buntons-debut-solo-single-hits-the-top__14532/. Its previously known total was 50,725 as of 21st June 2009. That's an increase of 2,785 copies in just under 7 years.

Greatest Hits is on course to spend a 6th week inside the UK album charts this year! Glad that it is building up a longer chart run. I'm certain it'd be a permanent fixture in the charts if it was actually on Spotify It's doing very well to stay in the charts based on CDs, downloads and primarily Apple Music when it comes to the streaming.

Fairly lucky! If you were to rank the 52 weeks of #1 sales from 1998, Mel B was the 44th highest. 39 of those 52 weeks required 100k+ to be #1.

Some more info: The first week sales of Goodbye (380,711) made it the fastest selling single of 1998, and Viva Forever was the second highest sales figure with 277,911! Stop entered at #2 with 115,000, which was more copies than 22 weeks of 1998 #1s sold.

Viva forever was on album that had sold well over 2 million . I guess Geri leaving created the buzz.

Why could have been if they released new album late in 1999. But then again we probably wouldn’t have had the masterpiece that is NS.

Simon Fuller might be playing the long game with not putting it on Spotify yet - since it is yet to get out of the Top200, they are probably racking up a bit of actual sales (so cashing a bit in) instead of the meager Spotify sales that come from streams... Not that it matters too much, but just thought about that now...

It is 2018 you are only shooting yourself in the foot not having an album on Spotify.

People who stream music don't rush out to buy an album that isn't there. Plus the studio albums are so 5.2m people a month are still listening to Spice girls on spotify just the GH isn't getting any streaming sales from it.

10 weeks top 5 is amazing. The problem they faced was becoming so global. They had to promote everywhere with the 2nd album where as the first had a delayed release in the US.

By Jan 1998 they were in tour rehersals. I mean Viva Forever didn't even have them in the video I can only imagine by early 1998 there just wasn't enough time to fit everything in and some areas of promo were going to suffer.

They were defo right though to do a huge tour even if it meant neglecting Stop for the most part in the UK and things like Viva Forever video.

Yeah, Spiceworld was still a huge album!

* ‘Spiceworld’ was the 5th best selling album of 1997, selling 1,060,000 in 8 weeks.
* It was the 27th best seller of 1998, with 438,000 copies sold. So a total of just under 1.5m by the end of 1998.
* By the end of the 90s it was the 37th best selling album of the decade.
* As of 2009: 1,576,709 sales.
* Over 20 years on from its release, it remains as the second best selling girl group album in UK chart history, behind ‘Spice’.

So it can’t be said that the bubble burst at this point. The sales weren’t as phenomenal as they were for ‘Spice’, but ‘Spiceworld’ in its own right was clearly successful. It also contains 3 #1 platinum certified singles.

If we’re ever going to use the phrase “the bubble burst”, that was most clearly the ‘Forever’ era - although by that stage the Spice Girls were evidently over it, given they abandoned the era. Their last promotion for the album (and in fact their final appearance together until their 2007 reunion) occurred on 16th November, which was a performance of Holler at the EMAs. That was just 10 days after they released the album. Forever sold 224,000 in its first 8 weeks, making it the 59th best selling album of 2000 (eventual sales of 266,000 as of 2015). That really wasn’t that bad off the back of just one single. It was clearly a huge decline from their previous two albums though, but their level of effort in that era was a fraction of how hard they worked for Spice and Spiceworld. I’d argue that they got back more than they put in, when it came to ‘Forever’.

¹ Shipments of over 400,000 means that Look at Me is certified Gold, but it's actually sold less than that [326,000 as of June 2017]. It seems her label vastly overestimated demand for the physical release! Interestingly it's sold less than Lift Me Up [346,000] and Mi Chico Latino [383,000] (both as of June 2017), but both of these are Silver. I'm pretty certain that none of these figures include streaming, although I doubt Look at Me has done enough streams to have even overtaken Lift Me Up's pure sales yet, let alone be anywhere close to genuinely being over 400,000. Anyway, I've positioned Look at Me below Lift Me Up in the above list, despite its misleading certification.

Other Notes
Stop was on 420,200 as of March 2017, while Never Be the Same Again was on 431,477 in March 2016. Stop will definitely be getting higher streaming sales contribution in the UK than Never Be the Same Again, but who knows whether it might have overtaken it in total sales yet... therefore I've kept NBTSA higher in the above list.

It won't be long until I Turn to You overtakes Out of Your Mind, because OOYM isn't available to stream in the UK (at least it isn't on Spotify, not sure about other services).

What Took You So Long? had sold 269,737 as of April 2016, including streaming, while Holler had sold 260,000 as of May 2015, not including streaming. Hard to know for sure whether Holler is likely to have overtaken, but without this knowledge I've placed WTYSL? higher up.

Bag It Up had sold 260,000 as of March 2015; Holler 260k as of May 2015! I think it's highly likely that Holler has outsold it, particularly with streaming taken into account.

I Want You Back had sold 226,000 as of June 2017, while What I Am had sold 224,000 up to the same point in time. I think neither of these include streaming figures, and I expect What I Am would be higher if streaming was included. Given we don't have that information, I'm keeping I Want You Back higher up in the above list.

When it comes to future certification upgrades...

I would assume Mi Chico Latino going Gold (400,000) is the most likely next certification update to occur. It kept up the pace with I Turn to You in terms of physicals/downloads, although it doesn't have the same strength on streaming. It should pass over eventually though.

Wannabe going 3xPlatinum (1,800,000) is a strong possibility. It was on 1,545,488 in September 2017, so it still has a way to go, but it achieves a huge number of streams... so it should be achievable!

Less likely, but maybe we'll see Say You'll Be There becoming 2xPlatinum someday, and It's Raining Men becoming Platinum. Both do quite well on streaming, but it'll probably take many years.

I don't think any other singles are likely to become certified silver, or upgrade their current certification level.

When it comes to the albums, Greatest Hits going 2xPlatinum is the most likely update, although with it not being on Spotify that will unfortunately take a lot longer than it would if it was available there - frustrating! As of March 2018 it was still 80,000 away from the target of 600k. Life in Mono and Victoria Beckham both sold over 50k+ but I doubt either will make it to 60k to become Silver.

It does indeed! I would guess that it's sold around 965,000 copies when it comes to physicals and downloads only (900,000 physicals vs 65,000 downloads) but I don't know for sure.


Interesting! It's a pity that "millionaires" are so common nowadays to the point that the OCC doesn't let us know when songs cross over. I would love if they did an update on the millionaires article from last year.

I wonder how long it'll take for Spice Up Your Life to pass a million?

Official Charts have revealed that 'How Does It Feel To Be On Top Of The World' has sold 94,000 copies! That's the first time we've had official confirmation. At the end of 1998 it was estimated to have sold 92k, as the 179th best seller of that year.

That would mean only 50 copies sold in 9 years and 4 months, given the June 2009 figure for it is 52,635.

That doesn’t make sense to me, particularly as it sold 2 copies last week alone. At that sort of rate (which is evidently really low) it should have shifted at least 1,000 copies in that period of time without much trouble at all, particularly with streaming sales helping it along for the past few years.

Life in Mono sold 2,785 copies in the 6 years and 10 months that went by since its June 2009 figure, by comparison.

I had a look back and VB was on sales of 52,016 as of September 2007. Therefore it achieved 619 sales in 1 year & 9 months (to become 52,635 in June 2009).

In light of OCC’s figure today I had wondered if the 52k+ figure from 2009 might have been a typo, but the 2007 figure also being 52k+ suggests that it was right.

But yeah, 50 copies in 9 years makes no sense based on that 2007 to 2009 trajectory. It can’t have slowed down that much. It’s always been constantly available to download and stream.

Strangely they've edited their article, and it now says: "Between 1996 and 2000, Spice Girls notched up nine Number 1s on the Official UK Singles Chart, two of which have sold over 1 million." Maybe they feel like the phrasing of "sold" suggests pure sales?

It's so odd, but at the same time, their profile wasn't massive... and I think their treatment of the last tour, like a fairwell, made people think it was over. And then it all went quiet until 2012 so...

They did barely any promo for the GH at the time. I feel like the GH is more popular nowadays and their profile is much bigger... Plus, over the last few years, the 90s are kind of back again so they have become quite a cool act again..

It seems likely that Spice Up Your Life could become a "millionaire" by summer 2019, just in time for the concerts!

The new Wannabe figure of 1,620,850 is again only taking into account the lower pure sales figure, rather than the higher pure sales that were used in OCC's millionaires article from September 2017. If we regard 1,620,850 as Wannabe's sales, then I think it would likely reach 1.8m (3xPlatinum) by the end of 2019. If the higher pure sales were used, then I think it would have crossed over 1.8m in spring 2019.

I'm thinking that Stop should be able to make it to platinum within the next 5 years! I think it'll reach Platinum sooner than Say You'll Be There would reach 2xPlatinum.

This return could push spice over the 3 million which would be great although I never realised spice world more or less only sold half the amount of their debut although for me spice world is the better album.

Wow at their sales!!!

Especially albums wise for a Girl band they’re incredible.

Singles sales also fantastic and should rise with the reunion.

I was a baby when they were at their peak so I never realised how huge they really were until this reunion.

Back in the Irish Top 40 this week, moving up to #38! In the UK it is down to #81 this week.

As of yesterday, the Greatest Hits CD is in a HMV promotion - you can buy it for just £2.99 alongside any purchase you make. CDs in this deal are usually positioned by the till, so everybody who buys something in HMV will be asked if they're interested in buying anything in that offer, so will likely see the Greatest Hits prominently! Hopefully a lot of people will fancy buying it.

Hope hmv keep the 2.99 offer till Xmas. Really just want the GH to be double plat now it is so close. Passing 550k (probably today) will be nice as we can then count down the last 50k.

Indeed! It would have managed #19 instead of #25 if they'd been able to sell 3,000+ physicals that week.

I'm a bit disappointed to see the streaming units falling quite rapidly in the past 3 weeks or so. Not that 632 units is bad, but I could see the GH falling out of the Top 200 whenever this HMV deal is over. Like Sammy, I hope that deal doesn't end for a while! I also hope that 2019 sees the GH become 2xPlatinum, it's certainly been a long time coming.

Our successful Queens! The £2.99 HMV deal is helping loads 88.4% of their sales so far this week are physicals. (1,952 cds, 62 downloads, 193 streaming = 2,207)

If they had arranged or managed to secure a promotional slot over Christmas they would have attracted extra sales.
The Greatest Hits will reach double platinum at some point next year.
Ideally, the tour will give huge interest and really sell the album easily past 600,000.

Greatest Hits had a good week this week! It climbs to #44 on sales of 5,851 (5,136 CDs, 588 streaming, 127 downloads). This takes its total sales to 560,442!

Hopefully this week coming can provide another 5k+ sales. Then it's a question of how quickly it'll be able to do the ~35k that'll be required to take it to Double Platinum. I really hope the £2.99 CD deal lasts into the New Year, because that has clearly been a huge help. Perhaps it'll be able to do 600k by the time of the concerts?

2018 has given a nice boost to the Greatest Hits not only in terms of sales (48,742 sold this year), but also to the weeks inside the chart. It's spent 14 weeks in the Top 200 this year, taking its total weeks to 45. Its time in the Top 100 has increased to 25 weeks, up from 17. It's now on 20 weeks inside the Top 75, up from 14.

I do wonder how much Spice / Spice World / Forever managed to sell after the announcement. I know probably like 20 copies each (if that) but would be nice to check. Also, they should TOTALLY put all their albums at super cheap prices online so they sell. No1 is going to buy them at normal prices when they have the Greatest Hits at 5.99...

Like the current iTunes promotion of 'cheap albums' could totally include Spice World and Forever for instance... ANYWAY lol I just noticed that I cant see how much it is selling for on iTunes as I've bought them already and it just says 'purchased' on the link rather than the price... grumble lol

£4.99 for Spice, £4.99 for Spiceworld and £3.99 for Forever!

In the Fri 16th November chart, Spice had sold 114 CDs, 217 downloads and 985 from streaming / Spiceworld 163 downloads and 635 from streaming. Sadly no physical sales for Spiceworld. It's a pity that the record label has effectively deleted Spiceworld - there's no new copies available on Amazon. The label only bothers keeping Spice in stock out of their studio albums, that's the only one available in HMV.

Hard to know how many downloads of their studio albums in ordinary weeks, wouldn't surprise me if it's less than 10 downloads a week at the moment.

Ah! Thanks for this Jay - how can you see the prices? Ive been trying to find but cant...

Shame then that the albums are so cheap but no promo at all (like, no inclusion on cheap lists, etc) as they would certainly shift more copies. SPICE is really their alma matter but honestly people know about Spiceworld at least. A shame that doesnt get any attention whatsoever... I wonder - HOPE - they will do something with their albums around the tour. It's a bit embarrasing how they never give their releases any attention anymore...

It would be a crime if they didn't release a Spice world vinyl. I can foresee another GH too this time with a 2nd disc of b-sides and rarities.

I'm sure that is why they are happy to sell off stock of the current GH now.

Yeah I can see it all happening too, as well as a GH vinyl.

BUT I would love it if they could:

- Re-release SPICE with unreleased tracks
- Re-release SPICEWORLD with unreleased tracks and on vinyl
- Re-release FOREVER with unreleased tracks and on vinyl
- Re-release GH with unreleased tracks and on vinyl

Thank I would be super happy, even though I think only one or two of those will happen
