positions • THE RATE RESULTS
First of all, my fellow mods and I would like to send a massive THANK YOU to the 15 of you that took part! Let's get straight into it then! LAST PLACE IS.... 19. SHUT UP AVERAGE SCORE: 5.27 LOVE language: LMLou (8.5) NASTY: George.keh (-1), coi (0) Our first out is this quite pretty, yet pretty rude () opening track which I almost see as an 'intro'. I think what she meant to say was 'Be quiet.' which ironically most of you think is what she should have done instead of recording this track. It received the lowest single score of the whole rate, receiving the ONLY '-1' from George.keh. LMLou disagrees though, scoring the track a generous 8.5. The majority of us scored it between 5 to 7 out of 10 respectively. Personally I love the stringy instrumental and always love her angelic vocals and harmonies, although I feel like hook could have used a couple more in the mix (That's very rare for me or anyone to say about an Ari track). Lyrically it's certainly different. I find it quite inessential and don't find myself going back to it but I will admit I like how it leads into 34+35. So that's that! Keep an eye out for new results daily! |

Yay
My feelings are similar to yours Julian - lush strings and vocal production but choice lyrics not too surprising a last placer! |

It is one of the weaker songs on the album but does it really deserve to be below a literal interlude 💀
(It has slightly grown on me tbh - as most of the album has - the instrumental is good, it's just let down by some rather questionable songwriting x) |

Not sure it's worthy of last place, but it's definitely not a favourite so not tooo fussed it's got the wooden spoon!

Sorry I didn't rate! I've only listened to this album 2 or 3 times and I couldn't be bothered to listen to it again to get a rate in - I HATE that I feel so disconnected and disinterested in an Ariana album as much as I do with this.

Echoing the feelings that 'shut up' probably doesn't deserve to be bottom but isn't too big a loss.

18. SOMEONE LIKE U - INTERLUDE
AVERAGE SCORE: 6 LOVE language: George.keh (8), Jade + MrAndrewMan (7) NASTY: HausofArgento (4), Nina West (4.5) BuzzJack has deemed an interlude better than 'shut up'. To be fair 'someone like u (interlude)' is still half the length of some of the full songs. This is taken from the deluxe edition of 'positions' and acts as a stop gap between standard closer 'pov' and first full-length deluxe song 'test drive'. I personally think it's a useful tool as the beginning of the interlude picks up where 'pov' left off, with a slow and smooth tempo, then ends on a more upbeat note just in time for 'test drive'. There's a need for speed if you will. I'm particularly impressed by the natural flow because Ari has a track record of some questionable transitions - like the jarring 'Intro' to 'Problem' on 'My Everything' and well-documented head-scratcher 'raindrops (an angel cried)' to 'blazed' on 'sweetener'. I enjoy the 00s R&B influences on the interlude such as the twinkly elements of the production and the brass instruments. The short but sweet lyrics let us know that she's in a happy place romantically and that she hopes it isn't too good to be true this time. Ultimately an interlude was never going to light the scores on fire and 8, from George, was the highest it got. There's nothing too scathing here but Bal provided the lowest score of 4. 'shut up' had a pretty savage average for a regular song but a round 6 for an interlude feels like a decent enough result for it. |

someone like u is a cute interlude! I feel like it definitely does its job and connects the standard edition of the album to the deluxe really well.

It certainly makes sense on the album but yeh it's an interlude, the only reason I included it is because it's longer than most others. It got the right placement in my eyes.

17. OBVIOUS
AVERAGE SCORE: 6.17 LOVE language: MrAndrewMan (8.5), LewisGT (7.5) NASTY: Tawdry Hepburn (3), LMLou (4) Obvious is the second to last track on the standard track list of positions and also the second shortest song and it obviously hasn’t left that much of an impression on us as we’ve ranked it as the second weakest non-interlude track. It overall got some decent results managing an 8.5 from MrAndrewMan, a 7.5 from myself and another four 7’s from everyone else. However the 3 & 4 dragged the score down to the very average 6.17. I’m a bit disappointed to see it this low as it’s almost the defining example of a mid-tier album track for me. I find the chorus to be a proper earworm although it doesn’t hit as hard as it should. I think most people’s criticism of the album as a whole is in the short length of the tracks and this is probably one that would have really benefited from a cheeky bridge and maybe a third verse. Overall, it’s very light and breezy and fits in well with the tone of the album but leaves me wanting more. |

‘obvious’ is definitely one of the filler moments on the standard track list for me although ‘six thirty’ moreso, surprised that has escaped the bottom 3

It's pleasant enough, completely agree it needs to be longer and doesn't hit as hard as it should. I think a valid placement, maybe I'd put it above one or two others.

obvious is a bop! it's definitely one of the better songs on the album for me. Surprised it's placed below six thirty & west side!

16. SIX THIRTY
AVERAGE SCORE: 6.23 LOVE language: LMLou (9.5), LewisGT + Nick1 (8) NASTY: Jade, Tawdry Hepburn + Bré (4) I'm going to keep this one a bit shorter since my head is still spinning... WHY IS THE ROOM GOING UPSIDE DOWN!?! Sleep tonight is going to be rough. Skrrt! Skrrt! A bouncy number which uses what I'd say is a slightly odd clock metaphor; 'six thirty' gives us major 'sweetener' vibes. It only JUST beat our previous out track by a 0.06 margin. LMLou gives the highest score of the rate so far with a 9.5 with two very respectable 8's from LewisGT and Nick1. Jade, Tawdry and Bré collectively awarded the lowest scores of 4. In general the scores were all over the board on this one... the real marmite track is yet to come. Keep yo' eyes peeled! Any shocks yet? (I don't really think so.) Who do we think will be next out? |

No losses so far really but 'six thirty' sounded a lot better than usual on my latest listen through of the album!

I do appreciate that the title is a Mac Miller reference (and clocks lol x) but yeah the song is definitely the least essential for me across the whole album!
