I'm sure I've seen a thread on this before so I'm probably being silly by not being able to see it now, if there is one then please merge this into it.

But Derby and Carlisle have just broken the all-time record for most penalties taken in a League Cup match, with the 32 in this match beating the 30 set by Liverpool and Middlesbrough a few seasons ago! Both shoot-outs finished 14-13.

Posted by: Silas 23rd August 2016, 09:44 PM

Oh that reminds me, I need to opt out of this.

Posted by: Rooney 23rd August 2016, 10:52 PM

Good to see Liverpool back the their usual consistently inconsistently brilliant selves.

Posted by: Mack 24th August 2016, 12:34 PM

Bristol Rovers did push Chelsea in their match but sadly not to be.

Posted by: Mack 24th August 2016, 09:28 PM

Out go Burnley and Middleborough after losing to Accrington and Fulham.

Had to be up early the next morning otherwise I would have stayed up for this. Edge of seat stuff.

Fourth Round Draw

West Ham v Chelsea
Manchester United v Manchester City
Arsenal v Reading
Liverpool v Tottenham
Bristol City v Hull
Leeds v Norwich
Newcastle v Preston
Southampton v Sunderland

Some good ties there. A potential banana skin for Hull I reckon.

Could will be a potential banana skin for Hull City. Looking forward to another Manchester derby.

I've got a feeling that we're going to get knocked out by Manchester City but we'll see what happens and it should be a good game for the neutral.

I think Mourinho will get his revenge for the drubbing in the league - also he always does well in the league cup in his first season too!

Posted by: JigsawSawMan 26th October 2016, 07:48 AM

Newcastle you have to say are potential dark horses for the League Cup if they keep that kind of form they showed last night.

Posted by: Rooney 26th October 2016, 07:49 PM

The Manchester derby is absolutely dire. I was expecting much better.

Posted by: Dobbo 26th October 2016, 08:14 PM

He was always gonna play not to concede after the disaster of Sunday, knew it wouldn't be a thriller.

Posted by: Dobbo 26th October 2016, 09:12 PM

Much needed result that, winning ugly but the result is everything in cup games.

City looking lost, 6 games without a win now.

More crowd trouble again tonight. Great result though....

Posted by: Silas 26th October 2016, 09:30 PM

Jesus wept Otamendi should go to the Olympics. He'd win Gold for all that f***ing diving he did tonight. What a c**t.

Defo grinded out that result like, but it's a home derby win and at the end of the day beating shitty is all that matters about this match. Doesn't matter how ugly or how dull it is, as long as we beat them.

We now play West Ham at home twice in a matter of days.

Good to see that my feeling was wrong.

Hopefully we can build from this victory and get some consistency going. We have suffered heavy defeats in the past and bounced back from them, I remember us losing 5-0 to Chelsea in 1999 and there was the 6-1 defeat to Manchester City that we suffered but we recovered from both of those setbacks. Some of the things some rival fans have been saying over the past few days has been ridiculous and over-dramatic, they're acting as if it's the end of the world because we lost a game of football by 4 goals to nil in October. Pish! Ash is no where near as bad as Otamendi was tonight. Spent about 15 minutes of the match rolling around on the floor trying to make up his mind which body part to pretend was hurt.

Spent 3 minutes directly in front of my seat in the second half rolling on the floor clutching is stomach then his thigh then his face then is leg again then his arm then his face before settling on his knee. There was nothing wrong with him at all.

Honestly diving like that should be a straight red card and automatic 3 match ban offence.

Aye, especially when we won 4-1 3 days before. People love to kick United the second they're not winning.

Funny how little has been made of Pep going 6 matches without a win for the first time in his entire career. (and that they drew 3-3 with bloody Celtic. CELTIC. Chester could hold Celtic to a draw laugh.gif )

Not the end of the world no - and for the record I thought you did really well this evening. Aided by the fact Kompany went off, but still, City never looked like they were going to score and United always looked a bit dangerous. I just don't know what Man Utd are trying to achieve. Obviously way too early to write anybody off, but right now you would say Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs and City all look stronger.

I'd like to know what's up with Mhkyitarian..

Posted by: Silas 26th October 2016, 10:57 PM

Yes I would like too know where Mkhitaryan is. If we get him firing on all cylinders then we will be unstoppable. Praying he gets a run out against Burnley this weekend.

Posted by: Houdini 26th October 2016, 11:26 PM

Mkhitaryan has been injured apparently but I also heard a rumor that there are some personal issues with him as well to do with living in Manchester.

Anyone who has watched premier league football over the past 10 years know what he's like.

You're point on the Scottish league is ridiculous - although I fear the greed of the minority of clubs/leagues means it could go this way a lot sooner than you think. No harm to the premiership but they have money more than being a great league - when's the last time a premier league player won the World Pleyer of the year? 2008! When's the last time they made the champs league final? Was it 2014?

I could make yet another point about the wealth and (relatively) even distribution of it is what makes the PL so competitive and makes it so hard for our top teams to get to the very top in Europe at the moment, but I somehow doubt the message will get through.

No coincidence that we dominated the CL in the "big four" era when the league as a whole was a bit less competitive.

Posted by: Steve201 30th November 2016, 08:49 PM

I'm not sure what is defined as the big 4 era but since the champions league start English teams have won it 4 times?

In terms of the league apart from Leicester and Blackburn it's always been the teams with huge injections of money or Manu or Arsenal. All huge concentrations of money has done for European football is create a system with 3/4 leagues with huge power generally dominated by the same teams at the disadvantage of other leagues. It's doubtful a team like Red Star Belgrade will ever create a great side and win the European cup for example.

Posted by: Dobbo 30th November 2016, 10:11 PM

Amazing how we can play like that in the cup yet when it comes to the league it's a completely different story.

Difference vs Sunday was Mkhitaryan. Same story as mid week last week. He just makes us so much better. He must start in the league now, we can't afford to bench him.

Also helps that WH only had 11 players this time instead of 14.

Was a good match. We mostly defended well, Mkhitaryan is what is missing from our attack, Zlatan needs to be a little less selfish in front of goal, great to see Martial finally back on score sheet in his best game all year and finally welcome back Bastian f***ING Schweinsteiger!!!

Mkhitaryan is a good player, that's never been in doubt. I just don't think, for whatever reason, Mourinho fully trusts him - much like Martial.

I really don't get all the hot air around Mkhi. It's just one of those things we'll never know. The reported story is that he wasn't getting game time because he wasn't fit enough/up to the speed of the League. Now he's in the team and performing far better than he did in his (brief) appearances previously. It's not something really up for debate, less so to poke fun at.

When he was out of the side I was one (of many) questioning the reasoning behind it. Now we'll never know whether Jose was foolish or played a masterstoke. I didn't say people can't debate it, I said they shouldn't really be debating it at this point in time as it's a fruitless exercise. I want Liverpool and only Liverpool to win the trophy! For me, I cannot see Manchester United NOT getting to the final. I guess for Liverpool/Southampton is just depends really. I expect it to be quite a close encounter as I don't think we will play anywhere near full strength.

Man Utd vs Liverpool final would be great for the competition, but I can't think of a team I would least like to play in the final!

So far the early advantage goes to Southampton.

Posted by: Mack 25th January 2017, 08:43 AM

How do people see tonight's match between Liverpool and Southampton going?

I reckon it will be a 2-0 win to Liverpool and going through 2-1 on aggregate.

Dunno we are in bad form. Is Van Dyk out?

Posted by: Silas 25th January 2017, 10:38 AM

I'd rather face Southampton in the final tbh. Trains back north will be much less punchy and violent that way.

Posted by: Silas 25th January 2017, 09:57 PM

Get in! That's a much nicer tie for us I reckon.

Posted by: Dobbo 25th January 2017, 10:30 PM

Well assuming we get there! Not taking anything for granted but I can't see us screwing this one up, especially now Snodders is out of the equation.

Saints yet to concede in the whole comp, very impressive. Would be a tough match.

Posted by: Silas 25th January 2017, 10:48 PM

I don't think we're going to disrespect Hull and will put on a good show. The thing that makes me confident is that Livermore and Snodgrass are both gone and that was the only positive thing going for Hull.

Soton are easier to beat than Liverpool tho. Tbh I'm just happy because it means that if I manage to land a ticket then I can get a train that won't be overrun by riots before Milton Keynes.

Posted by: Houdini 25th January 2017, 11:06 PM

I expected Liverpool to turn it around but I'm glad that they didn't. The League Cup should be going to Man United this season although Southampton will be a tough opponent.

Posted by: Steve201 25th January 2017, 11:54 PM

I've just been busy!

Southampton deserved to win over the two legs. We had all the possession, but we couldn't do anything with it. We had a couple of really good chances, but so did Southampton. Congrats to them, I hope they go on and win it now. A real shame to get beat, but meh that's football. We're not in good form at the moment, loads of players are out of sorts and playing with niggles/injuries. I think this is really highlighting how short our squad depth is. The good thing is after this week, we will be back to one game a week again, so hopefully we can play ourselves in to some form.

Despite the best efforts of this noted biased prick of a ref, we're off to Wembley!!!

Hull should never have gotten that penalty and we were denied a clear as day penalty when Smalling was taken out. Then there's the frankly ludicrous hypocrisy of carding Jones, rightly, and then letting Meyler away with an identical tackle in the same place. At least Moss didn't send Jose to the stands this time for "endangering those around him" by kicking a water bottle into empty f***ing space.

We played atrociously and deserved to lose our unbeaten run this past couple of games

How do you see today's final going between Man United and Southampton?

Posted by: Silas 26th February 2017, 11:29 AM

I am hopeful that we will take our second trophy home for the 2016/17 season to keep the Charity Shield company.

We dismantled Southampton when we played them at the start of the season and that's when we were playing poorly so I'm slightly optimistic but you never really know with these things. Cup finals can do funny things

Come on Southampton!!! biggrin.gif

I expect the game to be fairly edgy and quiet. a 0-0 or 1-1 would not surprise me at all. If it goes to extra-time I can only see Man Utd winning, but a lot will depend on the legs of everyone and if any team just settles for penalties as is usually the case.

We're taking this cup today, no two-ways about that! It will be a close affair though but I can see a 2-1 win for Man Utd.

I'm listening rather than watching as the rugby is taking priority in the hotel bar :/

God bless you Zlatan. God bless you! Sounds like an awesome strike too. Can't wait to see highlights.

25 goals for Zlatan now. Amazing.

I really wish that Lingard would score somewhere other than Wembley laugh.gif

Is it me or is Gary Neville have a shocker of a commentary? rotf.gif

Shocking. The way he was going on about that tackle, you'd think he'd broken someone's leg in two. Don't get wrong it wasn't a great tackle, but he actually got the ball and the man. I thought referees were meant to be doing something about players surrounding them?

Man Utd getting decisions going for them yet again though biggrin.gif Should be 2-2.

Southampton have played better in the first half but i'm glad that we're winning at the moment, that was a really good free kick from Zlatan too. We're quite lucky that Southampton's first goal was ruled out for offside.

Posted by: Silas 26th February 2017, 05:37 PM

Well this going well.

Whatever we pay that man is nowhere near enough. What a signing on a free from PSG. 26 goals in all competitions, the most of any PL player. Hero.

I managed to see replays of our goals as well as listening to the whole match and then streamed the presentation. Am pure buzzing. A key decision went our way and we ground out a win against a team who performed better than us.

Southampton could be a serious threat next year

What a fantastic game! All credit to them though they played the better stuff mostly we were just took our chances. Jose's brilliant League Cup record continues.

Posted by: Houdini 26th February 2017, 07:26 PM

I feel a bit sorry for Southampton as they deserved to win the match to be honest but overall I'm pleased that we've got this trophy under our belts and I hope two more will follow this season. Zlatan seems to score in almost every match and is definitely the best signing that we made in the summer, goodness knows where we would be without him.

Posted by: Rooney 26th February 2017, 07:27 PM

I knew Southampton would have to do a with the devil to win that match biggrin.gif

Fair play Man Utd, well done. Finally Liverpool fans can say you're a one man team!

Ibra is one of my fav Man U players simply because most of the United fans didn't rate him before he arrived because they are so arrogantly premier league centric they thought he didn't do it on the big stage!

Nathan Redmond should really be in the England squad imo, if he played for a bigger club..., I mean he's as good as Sterling!

At the age of 35, Zlatan still producing top quality football.

Top quality final this was.

Shame there didn't seem to be any free-to-air highlights of this unless I missed it.
