BuzzJack Music Forum _ 20th Century Retro _ Round 1 | 1992 End of Year Survivor

Posted by: dandy* Mar 3 2021, 09:44 AM

So the 1991 poll is finally over, time to quickly move on to 1992 as we begin our search again for the best of the top 10 singles of the year.

First of all, what a relief to have a better set of songs to pick from this time around laugh.gif It's a pretty good representation of the sound of the year too - although sadly for me, no Shamen or Tasmin Archer!

Rules are the same as always, vote out your least favourite each round until we only have one standing... go go go!

Posted by: dandy* Mar 3 2021, 09:47 AM

it's close between Michael Jackson and Jimmy Nail for me... but I'm going for Heal the World - it's just too saccharin.

Posted by: Jade Mar 3 2021, 10:09 AM

Hooray for a new year *.* pleased that Queen just about won the last one!

Went for Jimmy Nail.

Posted by: Dobbo. Mar 3 2021, 10:22 AM

Has to be Erasure for me. Always hated having that mess as my birthday #1!

Posted by: dandy* Mar 3 2021, 10:29 AM

Oh noooooooo! I feared Erasure hate would surface early in this sad.gif

Do you not like any of the tracks? I still really like their version of Lay All Your Love On Me

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Mar 3 2021, 10:29 AM

Drip Drip Drip

Posted by: dandy* Mar 3 2021, 10:42 AM

Oooooo the first six votes have all gone different ways, this could be an interesting year!

Posted by: Last Dreamer Mar 3 2021, 10:55 AM

We must vote for the best or the worst track in poll ?

Probably you did a mistake, because wrote "vote for the favourite track" in poll.

Oops I read the poll as vote for your most favourite track too. I would like to change my vote in that case please!

I suppose I don't mind their cover of Take A Chance On Me but if I really want to hear these songs I'll listen to ABBA wink.gif

Sorry both!

If you need me to change your vote, let me know what you voted for and what you would now choose instead.

I voted for Snap, but my least favourite is probably what Jade chose, being Jimmy Nail.

Posted by: Chez Wombat Mar 3 2021, 12:20 PM

Ah, my birth year, wasn't the best year compared to the rest of the 1990s. I don't recall hearing KWS, Jimmy Nail or Wet Wet Wet before (though I've not got massively high expectations based on what I know). Going for Michael Jackson anyway as that's always been overblown and saccharine.

Thanks - I've changed it.

Heal the World is too cheesy
but it's not a bad top 10, I don't really hate any of those

Posted by: steve201 Mar 3 2021, 12:34 PM

I think il have to listen to some of these before voting lol

Posted by: Jason Mar 6 2021, 05:10 PM

Heal the World is awful. Probably Jacko's most annoying single ever.

Posted by: Scene Mar 7 2021, 01:24 PM

Ain't No Doubt, Heal The World and Goodnight Girl are firmly the three worst from that list.

Goodnight Girl to go first but happy with the results so far. laugh.gif

Listened to them, went for Erasure as they’ve had so many amazing songs and that nonsense gets to number one, but like a novelty track.

Is the Jimmy Nail song a cover?

Posted by: Bjork Mar 7 2021, 03:42 PM

^it's an original

Posted by: steve201 Mar 7 2021, 04:12 PM

Cool, makes me say fair play to him then as it’s a fairly well known song even now.

Posted by: Popchartfreak Mar 8 2021, 10:07 AM

What no hate for KWS?! laugh.gif Please Go, it should be called, an annoying cover of a great KC & The Sunshine Band record. I saw them do it on the radio one roadshow in Bournemouth - and I still have no nostalgic affection for it tongue.gif

Posted by: Bjork Mar 8 2021, 10:15 AM

^agree KWS is an annoying cover, they were on my bottom 2 together with Jacko

Would I Lie To You

Posted by: Rob S Mar 8 2021, 06:01 PM

Controversially going for Whitney oops. Dolly's version is far superior and Whitney's got far better songs and this has always been overrated for me... Mind you I can't recall the WWW, Jimmy or Erasure tracks :') might need to listen to them but I doubt I'll change my vote for the next round.

'Stay' is easily the best here heart.gif

Posted by: Bjork Mar 8 2021, 06:34 PM

Thats the spirit, vote without listening to the songs :/

You could have worded that better without the rudeness. Wasn't that I voted without listening as I know I've heard them before, just couldn't totally remember. Anyway I've listened to them again now and whilst none would be sad losses. I'm keeping with Whitney as the other three aren't as overrated as IWALY!

wow nearly 2 months for round 1 biggrin.gif

Posted by: dandy* Apr 26 2021, 10:55 AM

Oh I completely forgot all about this laugh.gif

Posted by: Popchartfreak Apr 26 2021, 12:59 PM

so did I! Not sure if you want more reviews?

Anyways:

"Michael Jackson's very sentimental and well-meaning Heal The World is first out, proving that well-intentioned doesn't stop folk seeing you as cloyingly nauseating. Me, I love a bit of "save The World" messaging, been loving songs on that topic since I was a Junior school hippy ecowarrior, and I see no reason to change now, given the people in charge continue to ignore anyone who has been warning about it since the 60's. So, Michael, totally forgiven. Had it been shorter, a little punchier, less-lushly-produced, it might have struck a wider chord, but it did pretty well all in all despite not being the first track off the Dangerous album. Or the 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th. I'm assuming dandy prefers the first 5 singles, all in all!"

Posted by: Bjork Apr 26 2021, 03:20 PM

so what was it? the 6th single? biggrin.gif

The Michael Jackson track too would be my last favourite although it's a nice enough ballad. I like the Jimmy Nail song, reminds me a lot of 90s That That at their best.

I’m really new to the idea of branching out from the chart forum so seeing all these interesting polls in the 00s and 90s sections today has been a voyage of discovery!

I voted for IWALY - sorry think it’s a hideous track and definitely the worst ever 10+ week No 1.

Posted by: dandy* Apr 28 2021, 01:44 PM

Welcome to this part of the forum in that case - always good to see a new face around these parts happy.gif

Posted by: Bjork Apr 28 2021, 02:48 PM

^Shouldn't you kill Round 1 biggrin.gif

Posted by: dandy* Apr 28 2021, 02:53 PM

But it's still attracting new voters from the chart forum kink.gif
