Sunday Chart Predictions
Predicting the 04/01 to 10/01 chart

The effect of the iTunes gift cards is set to dominate the chart again this week. The only new release to trouble the Top 10 and indeed the Top 40 will probably just come from Philip George's 'Wish You Were Mine', however Mark and Bruno's hold at #1 with 'Uptown Funk' should remain theirs for a third non-consecutive week.

The album chart will be even more sparse for new entries, with Ed Sheeran probably remaining at #1 unless Sam Smith or George Ezra can return there. Expect big climbs from albums old and recent to shoot back up the chart due to sale discounts.

=======================================================

Some minor adjustments this week due to lack of chart info and sales content

Unfortunately MW will probably not publish anything this week due to the Christmas & New Year's break, we are also not expecting any chart info from other sources. OCC could publish the odd report Tues/mid week, for now please follow the iTunes thread topic for the latest chart info.

Music Week did publish a midweeks update on the Friday after the New Year at the start of this year and if I recall also did so for the previous two years on the first Friday of the year. So whether we get an update from Music Week on Friday 2 January 2015 will depend on whether someone is in the Music Week office on Friday and if so whether the member of staff gets around to publishing the midweeks. Fingers crossed...

Yeah we got one last year, towards the end of the week

Here is the link

Mind you Paul Williams is longer with MW, and since he left no one has written further reports, and usually Friday's MW data section goes ga ga, so I'm not entirely sure we get anything.

I would think it should clear 100K again quite easily this week as iTunes Giftcard/Hits of The Year/NYE party sales contribute as well as it's Streaming dominance - next week might tell a different story though

Posted by: Doctor Blind Dec 30 2014, 12:19 PM

I think it'll have at least another 2 weeks above 100K. Streaming is certainly going to be adding around 20K/week for a while now.

Naughty Boy’s La La La FT Sam Smith
UB40’s Red Red Wine

I'm hoping 2015 will have less #1 singles, having Mark Ronson staying put for a couple of weeks, seems to be heading in the right direction funky.gif when at the beginning of the year it changed every week until Clean Bandit released Rather Be.

Posted by: slowdown73 Dec 30 2014, 03:22 PM

I'm going to predict that Mark Ronson will sell about 130k this week.

I think that's a given, no doubt it won't be long before the streaming #1 'sells' 25-30k a week on average. I'm sure we'll see loads of sales #1's miss out officially in 2015 and I wouldn't be at all surprised if we get a long running #1 next year of the 6+ weeks variety.

Posted by: Ne Plus Ultra Dec 30 2014, 03:31 PM

Wow at Kylie having 2 million sellers. Now joining Rihanna and Adele for having multiple million sellers for a female!

And Olivia Newton John too.

They only announce songs as million sellers when they've sold one million copies (without streaming)

I wasn't sure where to look but while I'm here does anyone know how close Happy is to 2 million yet? IIRC it was about 1.5m a few months ago thinking.gif

And I think it will be the first 2m seller of 21st century! (still overrated as hell though dry.gif)

The Million Sellers thread says 1,955,000 including streaming but if it's possible I'd like to know the physical sales and how old that update was biggrin.gif

This probably isn't the best thread to ask this question - however, since the OCC will be giving us pretty much nothing this week we may as well discuss this here.

The last OCC figure we have is 2,054,862 up to 7 December, however that includes streams. The streams are ~27 million so using a bit of rough maths gives a total download/physical sale of about 1.784 million. It has likely sold a few hundred physical copies within that total, there was a 12" vinyl released earlier this year which I saw in HMV recently too.

Posted by: T Boy Dec 30 2014, 05:25 PM

I love that the OCC facts include Ed Sheeran's FIRST EVER uk no.1.

As we may not get midweeks here are some predictions I feel like throwing out there.

01 (01) Uptown Funk - Mark Ronson (feat. Bruno Mars)
02 (NE) Wish You Were Mine - Philip George
03 (03) Thinking Out Loud - Ed Sheeran
04 (05) Up - Olly Murs (feat. Demi Lovato)
05 (02) Something I Need - Ben Haenow
06 (04) Blank Space - Taylor Swift
07 (08) These Days - Take That
08 (10) Outside - Calvin Harris (feat. Ellie Goulding)
09 (06) Heroes (we could be) - Alesso (feat. Tove Lo)
10 (15) Shake It Off - Taylor Swift

Although, All About That Bass will probably be #10 instead.

Sales figure for Happy: 1.62 million.

Chart positions 3-6 looking very interesting for Sunday atm. Very little between them all on itunes and swapping places on and off through the week (Ed,Taylor, Ben,Murs) Ben ahead on Amazon and has some physicals though not as many as first couple of weeks. Streaming will probably move Taylor down a place as it's so close.

Posted by: Doctor Blind Jan 1 2015, 01:21 PM

"Happy" sold 230,000 in 2013, so 1.5 million + 230000 = 1.73 million.

The 'Gift Card effect' normally can be seen the week following the New Year as well so it's not exactly unusual, plus with streams, there could have been a lot of New Years playlists to replace streaming of Christmas songs.

This is one thing I miss about the charts of yesteryear. Record companies would take advantage of the new year lull to release singles by unknown or perhaps just fanbase acts. The result would often be a host of new entries which gave the chart a fresh feel. Now it's just the old hits bouncing back again.

err... how can streaming knock Pharrell down, its available on streaming unless I'm missing something.

So are other songs. Sometimes he has streaming on his side, sometimes he doesn't

Disappointed lll is out of the Top 10 but the 99p offers have cleared out some of the albums and will fade away next week so hopefully it will climb back in.

I just hope "Listen To The Man" can enter. Not even his TOTP performance on NYE has helped. Let's also hope that the X Factor winner drops out. Shame he didn't do a Sam Bailey

I suppose it's to be expected with only one new release charting this week. tongue.gif

Kanye West & Paul McCartney should hopefully provide a second top 40 entry (I know it only has 3 days of sales but it is top 5 on iTunes now). Of course that won't make the top 40 THAT much fresher but 2 is better than 1. Plus it'd mean there's a 2015-premiered song in the first chart of 2015, I'm sure that pretty much never happens laugh.gif

Wow at 'Happy', I had a feeling it might have been back in the top 40 in the mids but only around #39 or so as streaming has been mostly working against it so far. Looks like it'll safely get a 50th week top 40. Would love to see it reach 52 weeks.

It's just a dull song and deserves exactly what it has got so far, the status of a very minor hit. He's got a lot better than that on the album.

It would be cool if you could see what was being helped by the GCE i.e. sales I don't know if iTunes or a site does it (or individual stores selling the cards)

Whilst I agree it's irratating for Listen to the Nan to continually fall short - it's really whether the album is selling - which it still is by the bucket load, so I doubt he or the record company care too much

Expecting decent album sales again due to the ongoing sales and 99p deals - Today's are George Ezra, Damien Rice and Cheryl - Hoping Cheryl gets a huge boost back into the Top 30 at least wub.gif

(Plus 'Budapest' and 'Blame It On Me' are both still doing extremely well anyway, he doesn't really need a third hit right now).

I wish they pick latest releases, I don't think Damien Rice & Cheryl will do that much to be honest on 99p, the googleplay price reductions usually attract the newest/ biggest selling albums of the year.

QUOTE(Mart!n @ Jan 4 2015, 02:11 PM) *
George Ezra's Wanted On Voyage returns to the top of the album chart after a break of 12 weeks, jumping 4-1 with sales of 72,121 lifting its overall tally since release 27 weeks ago to marginally over 750,000. It made strange progress to secure its third week at number one - on Tuesday's sales flashes it was 7,500 sales ahead of Sam Smith's In The Lonely Hour and more than 10,000 ahead of Ed Sheeran's X - but by Friday's sales flashes it was marginally (231 sales) behind X but had moved 8,500 ahead of In The Lonely Hour. It is hard to be sure but it seems likely that its late dash to eclipse X by nearly 4,000 sales is due to Google Play's marketing of the digital version of Wanted On Voyage for 99p on Saturday (X had a day earlier in the week at 99p too). The circumstantial evidence certainly points that way with Wanted On Voyage selling 13,596 copies, 7,839 of them digitally on Saturday, while X sold 8,817 copies, only 2,352 of which were digitally on the same day.
