This is the first time I can remember that they've removed a song from the playlist while it was number one! I've got a feeling it happened with something else in the last few years but can't think what.

Glad to see Alfie finally on the playlist, shame they didn't add James Arthur though.

Posted by: steve201 2nd April 2021, 09:19 AM

Surprised they didnt just move 'Wellerman' into the B-List when he went up to number one, usually seem to have more manuoverability with A/B-List songs in terms of weeks they can remain there. But yes cant think of the last one removed while at number one.

Glad to see the new entries for Alfie Templeman and Royal Blood(another banger from them, cant wait for the album). Also great to see Jorja Smith, Fred Again and Lana move up. fairly surprised that 'Tulsa Jesus Freak' has moved up from the C-List.

Did 'Holiday' enter the B-List for Lil Nas X in December or the A-List?

Dance Monkey!

and before that, Despacito and Shape Of You

plus a few others which were replaced at #1 on the same day (One Dance). I think Dance Monkey was the only one which was likely to stay there the following week as well (which Wellerman surely won't).

Happy for Lil Nas but sad for no Olivia.

So basically songs that were in the top 3 for an age!

Thrilled to see Lil Nas X quickly on there wub.gif really liking that Alfie Templeman song too.

Posted by: lewistgreen 2nd April 2021, 11:57 AM

It's probably worth noting that apart from Sunday afternoon this playlist won't kick in properly until Tuesday morning due to the Anthems shows this weekend

Posted by: Hadji 2nd April 2021, 12:18 PM

Wellerman being removed whist at #1. I do wish they’d add Olivia’s new song and remove Friday

Posted by: Sour Candy 2nd April 2021, 12:28 PM

Olivia will 100% be added next week.

Posted by: Envoirment 2nd April 2021, 02:15 PM

Sad to see Maisie Peters off already! I was hoping she would climb to B-list this week.

Posted by: Bré 2nd April 2021, 07:47 PM

Kind of thought Ben Howard might at least go up to B-List after his album release thinking.gif

Posted by: Bjork 3rd April 2021, 08:06 AM

so maybe maybe they knew Wellerman wasn't #1 anymore biggrin.gif

The playlist committee meets on a Tuesday and there's no way anyone could have known at that point.

RE the playlist committee: I know someone working at Radio 1 who's on there, and said they had a pretty much universal hatred towards Silk Sonic's track! So I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't go past the C-list.

(I love it though laugh.gif)

Scott Mills doesn’t like it either - he’s mentioned it a couple of times when he’s played it 😂

On my first play i was like this is incredibly dull and outdated and I'm not going to be playing this song anymore.

4 weeks later and it's my 5th most played song of the month

Posted by: dan::G 3rd April 2021, 10:46 AM

I’m not surprised they don’t really like it and are seemingly only playing it because of Bruno’s name, the song sounds really dated. Which I suppose is what they were going for but it’s not really radio 1 friendly.

Posted by: steve201 3rd April 2021, 11:29 AM

Wasnt sure where to post this but the radio 1 playlist seems quite ‘fluid’ these days. Sometimes songs spend 3 weeks on the C List while others spend 9 weeks there and songs are A Listed for a long time.

What do you like and not like about the playlist and the way it works? (WITHOUT MENTIONING AGES AND GENDERS OPINIONS 😁)

Posted by: Dan17F1 3rd April 2021, 12:36 PM

I think the range of songs that they add to the playlist is pretty spot on most of the time - sometimes it can seem that there’s a little too much rap but I don’t think it’s a major issue.

It would be nice to see more of a range of different songs reaching the A List which I’d admit has improved recently with Architects, Noizu and Fred Again and The Blessed Madonna.

Also, it would be nice if there was a bit of a quicker turnover, I don’t really need to be hearing Tiesto or Anne-Marie for 10 weeks, that’s Capital’s job. It would also be nice if there were some more oldies thrown in throughout the day. I could quite easily listen to radio1 all day if the A List tracks were only played twice a day. When it’s 4 times, it gets a bit much sometimes.

Overall though, I reckon they do quite a good job with the playlist - much better than their commercial competition!

Posted by: steve201 3rd April 2021, 06:32 PM

Yeh they are still the best, they wouldn’t play A Listed songs 4 times a day if they had 20 songs on the list instead of 15 like the early century. They def play less different songs now imo. Even a glance at the playlist from day 2001 it’s such an eye opener in terms of amount of songs and genres!

Posted by: HiyaLuv! 3rd April 2021, 11:26 PM

I feel like I heard Wellerman on R1 quite a lot outside of the chart considering it was a C-list staller! Seemed to be on at least every other time we were in the car, which wasn't very much cos lockdown #3.

Posted by: HiyaLuv! 3rd April 2021, 11:30 PM

Also, Radio 1 used to be 90% of my radio/podcast listening but now it might be around 50% because I've started following ex-R1 DJs elsewhere for the first time, so lots of Capital Dance, Heart (purely cos Dev) and Phil Taggart's new pod ChillDaBeats. Plus lots of Radio 2.

I must say, 6 Music Goes Pop on Thursday was brilliant. Lots of things Radio 1 love but R2 won't touch and vice versa. Basically a whole station of Drake meets Adam and the Ants. I loved it!

Posted by: steve201 4th April 2021, 11:06 AM

I think radio 1 plays a lot of new bands radio 2 won’t touch and 6 Music play a bit!

Omg at 'Photo ID' making the playlist! cheeseblock.png

Also pleased to see Fredo and Mimi added (and Lil Nas X but that was a given). Central Cee on the A-list surprises me...

Great tunes of the week! Thank you lewistgreen biggrin.gif

As a bonus, Jack Saunders' tune of the week (he's covering for Annie Mac) is Bree Runway's Hot Hot which is such a banger. Really hope it gets added to the main playlists soon!
