3. You Will Make It - Jem featuring Vusi Mahlasela (2008)
Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there,I do not sleep I am a thousand winds that blow I am the diamond glints on snow This piano ballad might come as a surprise when the rest of the top 20 so far has been full of epic songs with an elaborate production. Two of Jem's friends were murdered,one was Proof,a member of the rap group D12 and the other was in the World Trade Centre on 9/11. She was already recording with Eminem's friends when Proof died and wrote this song the day after,intending to involve Eminem but that never happened. The lyrics are aimed at anyone who is grieving and are sung with great emotion. You also have the string quartet and the South African singer Vusi Mahlasela all adding to the melancholy. The poem Jem recites at the end was written by Mary Frye in 1932 and is often used at funerals. Shortly before I bought the 'Down To Earth' album that this is from,one of my uncles died and I remember playing the CD while driving down the M1 and was reduced to tears when this track played. Jem's brother was also involved in writing the song and wanted it to be released as a single but she told him it was too long which I suppose it is but I still think she should have done so. Not familiar with most of this top 10, still reading though, it's been an interesting read.
Didn't realise Jem was still active by 2008, I quite liked her song 'They' but don't recall anything else. May check this one out later. |

She also released a third album in 2016 called Beachwood Canyon. I think she also does some film production and screenwriting.

2. Supper's Ready - Genesis (1972)
Can't you feel our souls ignite Shedding ever changing colours,in the darkness of the fading light Like the river joins the ocean,as the germ in a seed grows We have finally been freed to get back home Genesis' epic masterpiece from their fourth album 'Foxtrot' which they have never surpassed. Unlike many of their prog rock contemporaries,they kept their songs to a maximum of about ten minutes with the exception of this one which is 23 minutes long. It's difficult to believe that the five of them were all 21 or 22 years old when they wrote it as it has such a complex arrangement with many changes in tempo and instrumentation. Most fans of classic or prog rock would put this song somewhere in their all time top 10. I have never seen this illustrated video that someone made for it in 2017. I've noticed it on my youtube recommendations a few times but I wanted to wait until now to watch it. He's done a great job with it,making it appeal to a younger audience who might not have the patience to listen to the whole track on a streaming site. Being so familiar with the song myself,it's interesting to finally see it's unusual storyline illustrated visually in this way. |

I don't know whether I recognise the Jem song or whether it's just that her voice is so distinguishable but the song really is beautiful.

1. Endless Dream - Yes (1994)
Temptation may come,hope your conscience doesn't hide The longest trip you'll take is inside Yes have been absent from from my top 25,having had many songs further down the chart,but 'Endless Dream' is now revealed as my favourite song of all time,just narrowly ahead of 'Supper's Ready'. It's taken from their 14th album 'Talk'. After playing this album a few times,it wasn't even my favourite track on the album. It took a while to grow on me but now I love it. It was co-written by Jon Anderson and Trevor Rabin who share lead vocals on the track and combines the group's 70s prog sound with their more guitar heavy 80s sound. I like Trevor Rabin's meticulous production throughout and the anthemic vocal part from 10.20 to 13.40 in particular. |

Well done on the marathon effort Rollo! The top 10 is a progfest that i dont know by and large as ive never had the patience for albums (or money and time more accurately)
 Enjoyed all the personal anecdotes and info and most of the ones i know im a fan of, so all in all a unique and fascinating rundown with many a classic

Well done on completing your top 1000 songs.
Suppers Ready I have heard before as my father has played it a few times as he has that Genesis album. Quite lighthearted in parts for a progressive rock track, especially the fun segment about Willow Farm. |

I'm afraid I've only heard two of your top 10 - And I Will Kiss and Untouchable (both thanks to BJSC!), both are wonderful epics ofc. and I'm sure the rest of these are as well so I'll make sure to give them a listen! Bohemian Rhapsody and Mr Blue Sky are both all time favourites of mine as well, and Dr Mabuse was a wonderful discovery from BJSC even if I was decades late so thanks very much for that.
Well done on finishing this nonetheless, I've enjoyed following it. Not been many members over the years attempting a countdown of this magnitude and actually finishing

I am updating this thread as there has been a significant change. I now have a new favourite song of all time! It's called Secrets Of Angels by Karnataka which you will be familiar with if you entered the Nuggets song contest which has just finished. It was my entry into that contest where it finished in 4th place. I discovered the song about a year ago from a thread on the Marillion forum in which members were asked to name their favourite song from the 21st Century,just one. I listened to some of their choices including this one. I was already aware of Karnataka but had never listened to any of their songs. They are from Wales and have been going since 1997 and Secrets Of Angels is the title track from their fifth album,released in 2015. The lead singer at the time was Irishwoman Hayley Griffiths (she has since left the group). She comes from a classical background and puts in a superb vocal performance on this 20 minute track. It starts with a harp and some uilleann pipes which bring to mind the time in the past in which the battle the song is about could have occurred. Keyboards,guitars,drums and strings come in later on giving the song its epic scale and the guitar solo towards the end is outstanding. I never thought I'd find a song to better Endless Dream and Supper's Ready which have been my top two favourite songs for the last 25 years but this one has done it.

 Giving a quick listen, it does sound pretty nice (if a little long to put on one of my playlists)
