BJSC 90 • Basto - Gregory's Theme For our 52nd entry we have sent Belgian house producer Jef Martens, better known as Basto. He has had quite a bit of history, stretching back to the early 2000s where he was one third of trance trio Lasgo, who had multiple chart hits including 'Something' and 'Alone'. He then started a solo career with the singles 'Rock With You' (2005) and 'On My Own' (2008) both making the (Belgian) Flemish Ultratop 50 chart. His third appearance on that chart would be with 2011's 'Gregory's Theme' and he'd have a few more hits afterwards. 5 years later, the Danaelanda International Song Contest Committee have decided to enter it to the Buzzjack Song Contest. 'Gregory's Theme' was originally written as an orchestral piece, inspired by the TV character Gregory House, before Basto turned it into a dance record. It was subsequently released on Spinnin' Records and 3Beat and got some airplay on Radio 1's Dance Anthems show. You may also recognise Basto as one of his aliases Lazy Jay, who was a credited featured artist on Azealia Banks' hit '212' (2011) as well as producing will.i.am's number one single 'Scream & Shout' (2012). |

Let's end the year on a top 20 guys! Don't forget to vote
'Again And Again' I've always found to be a second-rate version of 'Gregory's Theme', though I do like it. Don't recall how 'I Rave You' sounded. |

50 Contests: A Review after 50 contests, Danaelanda looks back on its participation BJSC 49 [September 2012], hosted by Aeroche After what we thought was a huge failure of an entry in 'Burning', we turned back to Andreea Banica who saw us have success a few contests back with 'Shining Heart'. Sadly 'Could U' couldn't quite repeat that top 20 finish, and in fact missed the semi-final top 20 even, placing at just 24th of 26 with 29 points. A record low for us at the time, though it's been "overtaken" multiple times since, most recently with Tobtok's 'Aber' which finished in 30th in the semi. 'Could U' was a very generic dance-pop entry and sounded similar to our previous entries, which was probably why it failed so much. At least we learnt from this to never send Romanian dancepop again. As for the songs that actually did well, it was Aeroche's turn to win the contest yet again as Unicorn Kid's 'Need U' gave the country its third consecutive win. Elen Levon finished 2nd yet again, this time representing Ramrynia with 'Dancing To The Same Song'. Séyetana finished 3rd with Dream Beats' 'Love Stuck', a position they still have yet to match or beat. Our 12 points went to Numayania who finished fourth. Here were our votes; 012 /// Numayania ► Italove > Strangers In The Night (4th) 010 /// Utopia ► Blackmill > Evil Beauty (12th) 008 /// Persephonia ► Machines Don't Care > Beat Dun Drop (17th) 007 /// Isconia ► Ren Harvieu > Forever In Blue (Tara Busch AnalogSuicide Mix) (29th) 006 /// Aeroche ► Unicorn Kid > Need U (1st) 005 /// Elëdan ► Dasha Luks > Diskoteka (26th) 004 /// Kylienips ► Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti > Only In My Dreams (20th) 003 /// Fervorosia ► Matrix & Futurebound / Luke Bingham > All I Know (13th) 002 /// FSR Rontvia ► Frida Amundsen > Rush (27th) 001 /// Järkangel ► Ricki-Lee > Burn It Down (7th) |

I feel like 'Gregory's Theme' is a possible big hit in waiting for when someone finally sends it tbh (new Ou Est Le Swimming Pool?? maybe not THAT big). So I guess I hope you are going with that one. x BJSC 90 • Basto - Gregory's Theme • 3RD We've only gone and done it again, with our second top three finish of the year, 'Gregory's Theme' becomes our second biggest hit of the year after 'Monody' - after scoring 295 points and finishing 3rd. It also finished 3rd in the semi-final. Completing the top 3 are Jadakissnia in 2nd (a new peak for them), who scored one point more than we did, and Aeroche who finally got their obligatory win of the year - making it the fifth year in a row where they have won at least one contest. It is also the fourth year in a row where they have been the most successful country of the year. Sleigh. The song they did it with, 'Fate' by Fraunhofer Diffraction scored 304 points making it a very close top 3. FINAL RANK 1 Dobago // Salvatore Ganacci (ft. Haha so it was that big after all I declare myself nu Nostradamus x (seriously though I'm not sure I would have predicted this going top 3 but very happy that it did! what a tune like I mentioned in my votes it's very Swedish House Mafia, should have been a UK hit but obviously a BJSC hit is the next best thing ) Congrats on ending the year with another medal position anyway. Any hopes that this success will reunite the halves of Danaelanda?
I wonder what other 'obvious hits that no one ever sent' there are from that time period after this and OELSP have both gone top 3, hmm ~ |

I'm surprised this did SO much better than Avicii! Quite the way to go full circle in 2016, starting & finishing with a bronze medal.

Although it does the Avicii sound even better than quite a few Avicii songs I think Danaelanda will remain divided for the time being, as the South blame the North for their previous flops. |

In a concept definitely not stolen from Bøtanikkä, we reveal our top scoring countries of the past year. Here are the countries that we gave some points to, but missed our top 40.

=39. The Actual Republic Of Bellamia [10 points] [85, 86]
a country we don't typically give points to, but they delivered with two of their entries this year in BJSC 85-86, both of similar quality although it was 'High' by Jesper Jenset that received more points, six from us. =39. Jukianië [10 points] [87] we got a small comeback from them this year which gave us their best entry yet, although they disappeared shortly afterwards. this one got ten points from us. =39. FARC [10 points] [84] FARC had a landslide win earlier this year with Salt Ashes 'Save It', which would've comfortably won without our ten points but I guess it helped anyway. it's a great tune and definitely one of the best winners we had this year. =37. Triangledonia [12 points] [86, 89] oh Triangledonia, you will be missed from the contest. even if this year hasn't been your best, we did get the great 'Fantasy' remix out of it, which scored eleven points from us. =37. Brechtoria [12 points] [87] Brechtoria seem to be a newcomer that we've already lost, shame. anyway they're here on the strength of 'Her (Loving You)' which got 12 points, although that was mainly due to it being a weak contest, and would've got less points normally. |
