So it begins,

This thread is about what is the greatest F1 race that you've seen.

Here you vote from:

+50 to +1 on the best races in your views. You can chose up to 50 races. Or rank them from +50 onwards if there are less than 50 that you can think of. Or even 10 races from 50 to 41 will do. As many as you want.

Also you can post the reasons why you found these races great.

As we choose Buzzjack's Greatest Formula One race.

Deadline will be on: Sunday 28th October

Such a tough job to chose a top 50 and even harder to order them so I've not spent too much time on the latter.

The first decision I made was to eliminate any that I didn't remember at the time, so basically anything from before 1976 was gone. Sadly this included the amazing 1971 Italian GP, which is viewable in its entirety online, and Germany 1957, which has a brilliant 'highlights' film of Fangio's best ever drive.

Frankly, jettisoning everything I'd seen retrospectively made it manageable.

Some are included purely because they are unpredictable or chaotic, some have amazing individual drives and some make it on single moments of genius.

+50
1998 Belgium - A race that had pretty much everything, we've all seen it. I was lucky enough to be there so colour me biased but this one was unrelentingly eventful and I have so many incidental memories.
1979 France - Jabouille won but no-one remembers that. It's all about Arnoux and Villeneuve duking it out over the last few laps.
1982 Monaco - The one nobody wanted to win as five drivers all managed to bin it on the final lap.
1984 Monaco - Senna, in torrential rain and a piece of crap Toleman announces himself to the world by catching Prost's McLaren by 4 seconds a lap before the race was stopped. Bellof was catching both.
2011 Canada - The day Jenson Button defied everything the racing gods and mother nature could throw at him to pull off one of the most ridiculous wins ever in F1's longest race.
1985 San Marino - It was a lottery of fuel consumption where 5 drivers ran out of gas. Prost just about made it over the line and won it. Until he didn't
2016 Brazil - Whilst the 2 Mercedes tried to bore everyone to death a huge downpour made everyone else look like fools. Except Max Verstappen. Who put on a masterclass in wet weather skills.
1993 Europe - In typical British barbeque weather Ayrton Senna turns in the greatest drive of his life. In a dog of a car he passes 8 cars in a single lap and never looks back,
2000 Belgium - Schumacher aggressively blocks Hakkinnen, who loses time, and reacts by taking Eau Rouge at full tilt to make a 2nd attempt only to find Zonta is in the way. Stunning move.
1994 Japan - In terrible conditions Damon Hill momentarily achieves greatness and out-races Schumacher in the wet in an absolute nail biter of a race.

+40
1996 Monaco - When only three cars completed the final lap, and Olivier Panis won, you know it was a cracking race.
1989 Japan - Senna & Prost collide leaving Prost as champion. Except Senna gets going again and wins, only to be disqualified on a technicality. The world still argues about who was at fault.
1976 Japan - My first F1 memory. Niki Lauda made a good point well, Mario Andretti won and James Hunt became my first ever F1 favourite. And world champion
1995 Europe - Jean Alesi was supreme in the wet on slicks, set to take a hugely popular win. Schumacher pitted and began catching him by nearly 2s a lap. It was cruel, ruthless. Sadistic even, but brilliant.
1992 Monaco - Mansell was unstoppable and everyone was asleep until a precautionary stop put him behind Senna. There followed 5 of the most exciting laps ever. 2 giants on top form.
2019 Germany - That race where Max Verstappen screwed up less than everyone else to take the win. A comedy of errors. If only Vettel hadn't started last.
1986 Australia - Mansell and Piquet go head to head in the season finale... and Prost wins. Mansell's tyre explodes and he wrestles the car to a safe stop. Had he have hit the wall he'd have been champion.
1994 Spain - There's much debate over Schumacher's best drive. Many say Spain '96, but for me, lapping equal to Hill's Williams whilst stuck in 5th gear for almost the whole race tops it... just
1991 Spain - Senna and Mansell inches apart, neither willing to give up position down that long straight. F1's ultimate pissing contest.
2003 Brazil - Webber leaves a gift for Alonso and it turns to chaos. It took a court case to decide if Fisichella or Raikkonen won. Alonso sat out the podium in a hospital bed and Fisi's car burst into flames once parked.

+30
1981 Spain - The Villeneuve train. On lap 14 Gilles finds himself in the lead in a poor handling Ferrari and 5 cars queued up behind him. He kept them there for over 60 laps. F1's 2nd closest finish ever.
1999 Europe - Johnny Herbert records an unlikely and popular win by simply keeping his unfavoured Stewart Ford on the track whilst everyone else falls off
1987 Britain - Nigel Mansell hunts down team mate Piquet before pulling off a stunning bait and switch move.
1996 Spain - Schumacher earns the nickname Der Regenmeister after an incredible display that saw him consistantly 3s a lap faster than everyone else.
2019 Britain - Lewis Hamilton's superior Mercedes just can't get passed Verstappen, until the team pull him in for new rubber and send him out to hunt down the Red Bull. He does so with ruthless efficiency.
1989 Hungary - Mansell qualified his Ferrari in 12th place, which he felt was beneath him. Fired up he charged through the field to take the win. The Tifosi loved it and the legend of Il Leone was born.
2007 Brazil - The title decider between Hamilton and Alonso with Raikkonen an outside chance. Both McLaren drivers lost the championship by a point.
1994 Australia - Schumacher's ban had allowed Hill to take the title down to the final race. Michael took the lead, until he hit the wall... and then Hill. It ended in tears for everyone except winner Mansell.
1995 Britain - Schumacher vs Hill crashgate pt 2. This time Hill was clearly to blame and it probably broke his reputation at Williams. Herbert came through to score his debut win after a tough duel with Coulthard.
1984 USA Dallas - Street circuit specialist Keke Rosberg wins on a day where the heat and a breaking up track claimed everyone else. Mansell famously tried to push his car over the line before collapsing.

+20
2012 Brazil - Jenson Button wins his final victory as Alonso looks to win his 3rd title. Vettel had other ideas and did just enough to claim it for himself.
1995 Canada - Jean Alesi was hugely popular with his exciting style but the racing gods were cruel and denied him many certain victories. They smiled on him only the once. And they did it on his birthday.
1986 Spain - Prost, Mansell and Senna in a huge 3-way duel for victory. Prost faded away and the other 2 slugged it out, finishing almost side by side. Mansell joked it was so close they should get 7 1/2 points each.
2015 Bahrain - Nico Rosberg 'strongly disliked' finishing behind Lewis Hamilton and his desire not to do so brought a new excitement to the Mercedes pair.
1982 USA Detroit - John Watson starts 17th on the grid but battles through it all to finish 1st
1990 Mexico - Prost charges through the field from 13th to win but it was Mansell's pass on Gerhard Berger, around the outside of the Peraltada, that remains the talking point.
1986 Hungary - Piquest and Senna engage in a fierce battle with Piquet delivering one of the all time great overtakes. A four wheel slide around the outside whilst allegedly giving Senna the finger.
1995 Belgium - Schumacher qualifies a lowly 16th but asserts his dominance to take the win and further cement his reputation.
2017 Azerbaijan - Perez and Ocon cause chaos and Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton tangle as road rage takes over. Ricciardo keeps his cool to win.
1995 Australia - Damon Hill was the only front runner to finish the race as everyone else acted like it was the last day of school.

+10
2018 Azerbaijan - The Red Bulls get racey with other with inevitable consequences. Vettel over cooks it and Bottas' tyre explodes. A sheepish Hamilton can't work out how he won the race.
2007 Europe - Markus Winkelhock leads the race for Spyker as turn 1 is re-named 'the river'. Fernando Alonso keeps it together to win.
2010 Abu Dhabi - Alonso leads the title race and Mark Webber and Vettel lie 2nd and 3rd. Hamilton an outside bet. It's cagey at first until Webber gets it wrong, Vitaly Petroc holds up Alonso and Vettel is champion.
1981 Monaco - The Loews hotel is on fire and water floods the tunnel. Piquest crashes from the lead as does Alan Jones and the crowd roars with delight as Gilles Villeneuve claims his first win in ages.
1992 Australia - Senna rams Mansell from behind and Gerhard Berger holds of the two Benettons to claim his final win for McLaren.
2019 Austria - Charles Leclerc can't quite hold on for his debut win as Max Verstappen does overtaking the old fashioned way.
2003 Britain - Barrichello fluffs the start but recovers to put in one of his best drives in an eventful race often remembered for the mad priest's track invasion.
1997 Germany - Gerhard Berger not only sticks a poor Benetton on pole but pulls off what may be his finest drive to win at Hockenheim
1996 Portugal - Jacques Villeneuve passes a stubborn Schumacher around the outside at Estoril in a glorious move.
2015 Hungary - Vettel dedicates his win to the recently departed Jules Bianchi in an eventful race.

I will be doing this at some point, just taking the time to remind myself of some of the races I really enjoyed watching (and also discovering a few I haven't seen!). I am of course going to have a recency bias so expect most of mine to be post-2008 as I was too young to remember any before that, but there will be some from before then too.

I have whittled it down to my final list of 50 so just need to rank em all now.

Similar in a way to coi I'm only going to include races I actually watched (which is 2002 onwards when I started actively following the Sport) so won't have quite the impressive array as Severin.

I would like to do this but would have to put a quite a bit of effort into it to remember stuff, and I've never really gone back to old championships from when I first got into F1, so would be difficult for me to include anything pre-2001 which doesn't seem right.

Can we have another extension? I have most of the races I want to include in my list now but I still need a bit more time on it and I'm busy this weekend. Should be able to post it early next week.

(Also, a possible idea if you want more participation in this - I think a few posters struggle to come up with a list because it's very time consuming to remind yourself of all of the enjoyable races there have been in the sport, perhaps creating a final round with only the highest-scoring races included would be good for wider participation?)

Thank you for your patience, we are finally done! cheer.gif

+50: Canada 2011 [just gave it to this absolute classic in the end. non-stop chaos, rain delays, a scarcely believable victor with everything thrown at him & THAT last last drama. 2011 was probably the worst season i've ever watched but this single race may never be topped]
+49: Brazil 2008 [even just for the last lap it warrants being this high. doubtful we will ever see the like again (it's the f1 equivalent of the aguero goal). on tenterhooks the entire way thru & i've never let out quite as much emotion as i did at that finale to any f1 moment ever]
+48: Germany 2019 [most certainly deserves to be this high already. i don't recall any race ever where every SINGLE lap i was utterly glued to the screen. drama everywhere you looked & even the novelty of stroll at one point leading the race]
+47: Japan 2005 [an absolute thriller. completely mixed up grid & two jaw-dropping overtakes from alonso and raikkonen, the latter of which coming on the very last lap. sensational stuff]
+46: Belgium 2008 [those last 3 laps are probably the most thrilling and crazy end to a race ever, absolutely perfect with the rain coming right at the end and all the additional stories of heidfeld passing about 10 cars on the inters to score the most unlikely of podiums. let's NOT mention the worst penalty ever handed out in f1]
+45: Europe 2007 [the scenes of car after car falling off the track at turn 1 was the closest there's ever been to playing online f1 in the wet. and then there was winkelhock LEADING THE RACE! absolute madness, not quite as high as i don't recall much happening after about lap 5 lol]
+44: Belgium 1998 [i know i only started watching in 2002 but i DO have distinct memories of this race from the deepest confines of my memory. obviously had THAT lap 1 crash and the schumi/coulthard incident but then there was the intra-jordan politics and eventual fairytale win. a true classic]
+43: Brazil 2003 [one of the first races i actively remember watching the entire thing. sheer drama all the way through with turn 3 claiming driver after driver. the insane webber & alonso crashes then the confusion over who actually won. fisichella the retrospective winner also bursting into flames after winning, crazy scenes]
+42: Brazil 2012 [every bit as exciting a title finale as 2008 with vettel pulling off the remarkable fightback as his lap 1 crash. plenty of action throughout but this edges it for being a thrilling title finale]
+41: Japan 2007 [one of hamiltons greatest ever drives. alonso throws it in the barriers, ferrari have an off day & lewis keeps his head in the most difficult of circumstances to pull off the win. bad for the spectators there but super exciting on tv]

+40: Britain 2008 [another wet-weather hamilton masterclass as massa puts on a show befitting of a rookie in his first season. plenty of wet weather dramas as expected as lewis strolls home over 1 minute ahead of the rest]
+39: Azerbaijan 2018 [managed to outdo even the previous year's thriller. chaos all the way through the field, not least both red bulls and force indias coming together and unlucky bottas puncturing with the chequered flag within touching distance]
+38: Hungary 2015 [in an otherwise uneventful season we were at least treated to this topsy-turvy treat with a rare howler of a performance from both mercs to allow danny ric to seal an opportune victory. everyone put on a great show in the wake of the bianchi tragedy]
+37: Hungary 2006 [lots of action points in this one, alonso putting a lap on schumi, that terrifying raikkonen crash. all culminating in the infallible renault that season
pulling a grave error allowing JENSON BUTTON TO WIN THE HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX, GET IN THERE! *J. Allen 2006]

+36: Brazil 2016 [another interlagos classic in the wet. mercs pull away no drama anywhere but this is the race that made verstappen who was in a class of his own that day & produced possibly the greatest save of all time (after gordon banks lol)
+35: Spain 2016 this was the most intriguing race of the hybrid era so far with the incredible sight of 2 mercs out of the race on the first lap. whoever won it would be a huge story but for max to hold off the veteran kimi in his debut race for red bull, my word i doff my cap to the kid]
+34: Italy 2008 [feels like it should b higher for the insane story of a backmarker actually winning the race alone but the truth is it was a procession we'd soon become very accustomed to from seb. still a massive talking point in an already classic season up to that point]
+33: Singapore 2008 [now this was another belter. the fact it was a night race was significant enough but we had crashgate, the sheer hilarity of the ferrari mechs running down the pitlane to save massa (this single event cost him the title let's not forget), plenty of crashes & the unfathomableness of an uncompetitive renault storming from 15th on the grid to victory, little did we know at the time...
+32: Britain 2003 [enthralling overtakes, a mad irish priest, drama all the way down the field and rubens finally getting some good fortune as well as putting in arguable his best ever ferrari drive to take the victory]
+31: Canada 2008 [one of hamilton's dark days with the pitlane incident. lots of wild overtakes and the absolute fairytale story of kubica winning a year on from THAT crash]

+30: Monaco 2008 rare wet monaco race causing all sorts of chaos - lewis even hits the wall yet still pulls off a masterclass to win
+29: Brazil 2007 grandest of all finales with 3 drivers going head to head. against all the odds kimi pulls it out the bag
+28: Australia 2008 2008 again! both one of the craziest dry races ever & craziest season openers with crashes wherever you look
+27: Belgium 2004 utter carnage on the first lap, one of the scariest shunts ever in button vs baumgartner and schumi actually being modest for once by saying to kimi "the best man one today"
+26: Azerbaijan 2017 chaos all the way through, vettel's red mist moment & that tight as hell finish between bottas/stroll - the latter somehow making the podium!
+25: Hungary 2014 the first of the back-to-back hungaroring thrillers, danny ric as ever back then able to pick up the pieces on a rare merc off day
+24: Japan 2008 fuji producing 2 crackers, this was at the height of the gripping hamilton vs massa battle and through it all alonso manages to actually win on merit this time
+23: Abu Dhabi 2012 the only real thriller at yas marina, a first win in 3 years for kimi & vettel producing a rare sight, battling through the field in a pitlane to podium drive
+22: USA 2018 superb race last season that put a smile on everyone's face as the outbound kimi signed off with a long LONG overdue win, the best at the COAT to date
+21: Canada 2014 what was i saying about danny ric just a min ago? here was again pulling off the moves to earn a maiden victory in the merc dominated hybrid era

+20: Abu Dhabi 2010 the race itself wasn't anything too spectacular but the fact there was 4 drivers all in contention of the title made it gripping all the same, plus THAT horrifying schumi crash on lap 1 & alonso's meltdown over petrov
+19: Germany 2018 the race where it all fell apart for seb and he's never been himself since. a sprinkling of rain always adding some spice & lewis fighting back from 14th to take the flag
+18: Europe 2012 the ONLY good race ever at valencia. lots of drama & action right the way thru, alonso capping off a splendid drive & schumi's last ever podium appearance and only one during his merc stint
+17: San Marino 2005 aside from the worst timed ad-break ever this is all about the crescendo to that gripping climax where ferrari suddenly found some race-winning pace for the only time this season
+16: China 2018 ALL about that late safety car switching up the strategies and that monstrous drive from danny ric passing 5 cars on track to take one of his best wins. shame those days are over!
+15: Bahrain 2014 the only real time we had a genuine "fair" wheel to wheel ding-dong between lewis & rosberg. this should have been sign of things to come but as we all know it got personal from here
+14: Austria 2019 a recent inclusion but fully deserving. just when we thought merc would win every single race they are completely out of the picture leading to a last 3 laps showdown between f1's 2 hottest prospects
+13: Korea 2010 awful track & racing but the rain certainly made this one interesting when it finally got going! the race everyone thought alonso has seized the title with vettel's dnf but little did we know...!
+12: Belgium 2009 craziest grid of all time with fisichella taking the most surprising pole i can ever care to remember, even more remarkable was this being ferrari's only win this season with kimi pulling off a sorely underrated incredible pass at the start. oh yeah and then was that mass pile up at les combes
+11: Europe 2005 THE mother of all lap last nail biters! alonso hunting down a wounded animal in kimi's mclaren from an earlier flatspot. then on the very lap, boom - finnish hearts collectively sank

+10: Mexico 2016 all sorts of stuff happening here behind the 2 mercs, vettel going into meltdown over verstappens driving & letting charlie (and the world) know his thoughts. then danny ric being danny ric - an often overlooked race of 2016 for the return of this track
+09: USA 2007 the final dance at indianapolis. lewis & fernando going wheel to wheel down the main straight with the former NOT conforming to the latter's demands and holding out for a monumental victory
+08: Abu Dhabi 2016 the race itself was pretty meh but simply due to those last 5 or so laps this makes the list. the DRAMA! lewis in no way playing ball, why should he but ultimately rosberg squeaks the title
+07: Brazil 2006 title was unfortunately done & dusted thanks to schumi's engine explosion last time out but didn't stop a masterclass of scything through the field
+06: Britain 2019 probably deserves to be higher based on the enthralling max vs charles battle alone! was great to swing by the hangar straight in person earlier this year
+05: Monaco 2004 absolute carnage at the start with engine failures & cars upside down. remember britain holding it's breath for button's first win but ended up with trulli's in what turned out to be ferrari's only blip in the first 14 races! couple of notable tunnel incidents with the highlight being alonso flipping the bird to ralf
+04: Australia 2010 not the season opener for once but a very exciting race with button showing his prowess in performing in mixed conditions
+03: Australia 2014 first race of the hybrid era certainly was a step into the unknown with some outlandish predictions that no cars would finish! this was more intriguing than exciting but i certainly remember it well
+02: Australia 2013 yeah a bit lazy here with 3 melbourne races but this was a surprise seeing the lotus of kimi grab the win, unfortunately this would descend into one of the worst seasons ever with the ridiculous vettel domination
+01: Malaysia 2009 bit of a lol pick but whatever, absolute monsoon stopping play but all the memes that followed at least made the event in general an entertaining watch

Hope my very lazy reviews prove somewhat entertaining reading material.

Sorry mine is mainly just a list - and not a complete 50 - but I needed to get this in before the deadline.

+50 Canada 2011 - A truly epic race, exciting from start to finish, full of twists and turns, and even the rain delays were really entertaining (even if it was just to see the commentators desperately filling in the time!). A race I could watch in full over and over again, and have done!

+49 Brazil 2012 - Drama everywhere in a crucial final race of the season, also the race with Raikkonen's hilarious journey off the track!

+48 Brazil 2008 - Another race where the title was decided, and in very dramatic circumstances right at the end! I think we can all remember where we were when we saw Glock slowing down into the final corner.

+47 Belgium 1998 - I'm far too young to remember this but watched it in full since, really quite an extraordinary race.
+46 Europe 2012 - Another really exciting race throughout.
+45 Brazil 2003 - Same as Belgium 1998, incredible late drama in this one.
+44 Germany 2014 - Very eventful race, right from the first corner.
+43 Europe 2007 - Turn one though!!
+42 Abu Dhabi 2012 - Memorable for many things, and especially "leave me alone, I know what I'm doing"
+41 Germany 2019 - Unlike most races this season this was actually entertaining and unpredictable!

+40 Italy 2008
+39 Japan 2005
+38 Belgium 2009
+37 Austria 2019
+36 Hungary 2006
+35 Australia 2002
+34 Canada 2008
+33 Bahrain 2017
+32 Australia 2008
+31 China 2018

+30 Germany 2009
+29 Abu Dhabi 2010
+28 Azerbaijan 2017
+27 San Marino 2005
+26 Brazil 2007
+25 Hungary 2014
+24 Malaysia 2012
+23 Belgium 2008
+22 Australia 2013
+21 China 2011

+20 Brazil 2011
+19 Canada 2014
+18 Monaco 2004
+17 Austria 2018
+16 Germany 2000
+15 USA 2012
+14 Turkey 2010
+13 Hungary 2015
+12 Singapore 2010
+11 USA 2018

+10 Spain 2016
+9 Brazil 2006
+8 Britain 2019
+7 Azerbaijan 2018
+6 Malaysia 2009 - I wasn't going to include this but having seen it at the end of dobbo's post... laugh.gif it was still entertaining to watch, just not for the race itself but the insane amounts of rain!
