What's people's favourite Christmas indie hit??

Post them up and feel free to discuss smile.gif

I've started with The Wombats Is This Christmas a top 75 hit when released in December 2008 and Alisted on radio 1 at the time. It was Hottest Record for Zane Lowe on the 29/11/08!

Release date: 15/12/08
On CD/Download/vinyl
U.K. chart peak: 49

Posted by: Suedehead2 15th December 2018, 09:54 PM

Ignoring the "hit" part of the question, this has long been a favourite...

Utterly bonkers, but great fun.

The Darkness - Christmastime (Don't Let the Bells End) is a classic!

Posted by: Bjork 16th December 2018, 05:49 PM

St Etienne - I was born on Xmas day

this should be on all Spotify playlists not Buble biggrin.gif

All of their festive hits are great, but this is by far my favourite.

They played this in ASDA the other night - I was so happy I was dancing in the aisles!

Low “Just Like Christmas” is the ultimate-
and I also love Mew's “She Came Home For Christmas”. I have an indie Christmas songs playlist on my iPod which I usually break out around now. : )

When I worked in Asda over Christmas, I heard that St Etienne track all the time. Thankfully now I can listen to it again and enjoy it. I'd also second "Just Like Christmas", it's so popular on 6music now around this period that whenever the ask for requests for Christmas songs to play, the specifically say that there's no need to ask for it.

Also really love "I Want An Alien For Christmas" by Fountains of Wayne -

Posted by: Doctor Blind 18th December 2018, 11:30 PM

Here are the ones which have been hits on my personal chart in the past 15 years or so...

Mew “She Came Home For Christmas”
The Water Babies “Under The Tree”
Frightened Rabbit “It's Christmas So We'll Stop”
Laura Marling “Goodbye England (Covered In Snow)”
Julian Casablancas “I Wish It Was Christmas Today”
The Darkness “Christmas Time (Don't Let The Bells End)”
The Black Arts “Christmas Number One”
Los Campesinos! “When Christmas Comes”
!!! (Chk, Chk, Chk) “And Anyway It's Christmas”
The Raveonettes “The Christmas Song”
The Wombats “Is This Christmas?”
Orbital “Christmas Chime”
Smith & Burrows “When The Thames Froze”
Coldplay “Christmas Lights”
The Futureheads “Christmas Was Better In The 80s”
Emmy The Great & Tim Wheeler “Home for the Holidays”
Hurts “All I Want For Christmas Is New Years Day”
Dawn McCarthy & Bonnie "Prince" Billy "Christmas Eve Can Kill You”
Loose Tapestries “Can't Wait For Christmas”
Marching Church “Christmas On Earth”

The Loose Tapestries is itself an underrated CLASSIC.

The Killers - Boots

To be fair most of their Christmas songs were great, but 'Boots' is my ultimate favourite. Shame they've stopped doing them.

Posted by: Christmasteve201 19th December 2018, 08:47 PM

Boots is a masterpiece.

I got the cd the other year with them all on it!

Posted by: Christmasteve201 19th December 2018, 10:44 PM

Always enjoyed this underrated gem - Joni Mitchel River

Posted by: Bjork 20th December 2018, 09:12 AM

River is amazing
not sure if it counts as alt/indie/rock biggrin.gif

Posted by: Christmasteve201 20th December 2018, 06:13 PM

Worth adding to discuss though and for other members to enjoy wink.gif

Coldplay Christmas Lights probably one of my favourite modern Christmas classics, Chris Martins voice is just so brillant. Peaked at 13 in the UK with strong support by radio although it's midweek release meant it never charted in the top 10!

Posted by: Bjork 24th December 2018, 02:09 PM

just remembered this is actually my ultimate favourite xmas track, zero famous, not even sure if there's a studio version, cos I always listen to this live youtube
two Irish singer-songwriters, Lisa Hannigan and Mike Flannery

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 25th November 2019, 07:37 PM

Absolutely loving Shame's cover of Feliz Navidad from last year!

Posted by: King Rollo 25th November 2019, 07:55 PM

This one wins the award for best Christmas song title. 'All I Want For Christmas Is A Dukla Prague Away Kit' by Half Man Half Biscuit

Posted by: dandy* 25th November 2019, 08:00 PM

This is probably my favourite. I'm a huge Aimee fan and this is just so typically her, she's so underrated wub.gif

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 29th November 2019, 05:58 PM

Richard Ashcroft has a cover of 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas' out today

Posted by: Steve201 30th November 2019, 12:33 AM

I like this but my favourite version is def by Chris Martin.

Posted by: Mo Bounce 30th November 2019, 09:42 AM

Also, this one here is not a Christmas song nor about Christmas, but Fran mentions the upcoming Christmas in the lyrics.

This video reminds me a lot of “Tonight Tonight” by Smashing Pumpkins, probably because both were highly influenced by the old French cinema thhing.

Posted by: ChristmaSteve201 3rd December 2019, 09:51 AM

The video is class, filmed along the Thames.

Back for another year! Lately I've been particularly enjoying power metal band Majestica (fronted by Sabaton's Tommy Johansson) with their new single "Ghost of Christmas Past" from their A Christmas Carol-inspired album out next month! The vocals are particularly beautiful. wub.gif

Indeed, brilliant song.

And this is a lovely and underappreciated 80s indie/rock/alternative Christmas song.

Possibly the best Christmas single to come from Japan

By the way love when this topic gets introduced again!

Posted by: FestiveOdyssey 26th November 2020, 08:24 AM

Some I've been enjoying from this year that don't have their own topics:

Vistas - Merry Christmas Everyone (Spotify Singles)

The Academic - Lonely This Christmas

Majestica - Ghost of Marley

Lights - Deck The Halls

Escape The Fate - Christmas Song

August Burns Red - All I Want For Christmas is You

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 19th October 2021, 03:50 PM

Sabaton are releasing 'A Christmas True' on October 29th! I'm very very excited for this one biggrin.gif

Like this punk version of Shakys classic:

Posted by: ChristmasFridays 5th December 2021, 06:50 PM

The Season's Upon Us by Dropkick Murphy's has to be up there as one of the greatest.

Smith & Burrows - When The Thames Froze

Their Winter/Christmas album is probably one of my favourite albums of all time

Must check it out!

Posted by: SevenSeize 5th December 2021, 09:21 PM

wow I forgot about that Dropkick Murphys track laugh.gif i remember enjoying that one years ago

I always go to this new wave banger for the perfect hopeless, melancholic christmas mood </3

beabadoobee's previously Apple-exclusive cover of 'Winter Wonderland' has been made available on platforms this year! wub.gif

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 16th December 2021, 07:27 PM

I'm also loving Beach Bunny's new one 'Christmas Caller' wub.gif

Posted by: dandy* 17th December 2021, 01:45 PM

I'm still really enjoying this one that I sent to the BJSC spin off a year or two ago. I just find it really warming to listen to and I'm even used to the shrieks of IT'S CHRISTMAS now.

ps I'm assuming it's not actually our Cody singing

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 22nd December 2021, 11:04 PM

Slade’s ‘Merry Xmas Everybody’ now has an official video for the first time ever! laugh.gif

My current BJSC artist has released the following song laugh.gif

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 3rd November 2022, 09:41 PM

Ooh, very groovy!

The 1975's 'Wintering' has (unsurprisingly) massively caught my attention this year laugh.gif I was fully expecting it to be a slow song based on the title!

Posted by: uhsting 4th November 2022, 05:20 PM

wait no 100 gecs yet? this must be played every single year:

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 4th November 2022, 05:39 PM

Is ‘Wintering’ a Christmas song?

Yes! It's about driving home for Christmas

QUOTE
Now mum's not a fan of that line about her back
She said it makes her sound frumpy and old
I said, "Woman, you are sixty-four years old"
Now stop the percussion, I wanna have a discussion
And it's Christmas so this is gonna be a nightmare
I just came for the stuffing, not to argue about nothing
But mark my words, I'll be home on the 23rd
Yeah, drive up on the 23rd
Oh, come home on the 23rd

Posted by: Steve201 5th November 2022, 04:47 PM

So R1 might actually playlist a new Xmas track this year if they chose it as a single!

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 5th November 2022, 05:03 PM

Perhaps, although it’s one of two songs from Being Funny that they aren’t performing live currently - so I doubt it’ll be pushed!

Posted by: LiamSime 5th November 2022, 06:00 PM

I wasn’t too sure where this should go so feel free to move it if required but it looks like we could be getting a Christmas song from Tom Grennan soon?!

Following on from 2005's surprisingly decent 'The Gift of Rock', Smash Mouth are back with new Christmas album 'Missle Toes' on November 17th:

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 10th November 2023, 12:42 PM

Former Nightwish frontwoman Tarja Turunen has released the album 'Dark Christmas' today, featuring symphonic/gothic orchestral versions of some Christmas classics. I'm not sure if I like it or not, but it's definitely interesting from what I've heard! laugh.gif
