What's people's favourite Christmas indie hit??
Post them up and feel free to discuss
I've started with The Wombats Is This Christmas a top 75 hit when released in December 2008 and Alisted on radio 1 at the time. It was Hottest Record for Zane Lowe on the 29/11/08!
Release date: 15/12/08
On CD/Download/vinyl
U.K. chart peak: 49
Ignoring the "hit" part of the question, this has long been a favourite...
Utterly bonkers, but great fun.
The Darkness - Christmastime (Don't Let the Bells End) is a classic!
St Etienne - I was born on Xmas day
this should be on all Spotify playlists not Buble
if only they called this one Xmas Winds instead of Winter Winds
All of their festive hits are great, but this is by far my favourite.
^link does not work
Here are the ones which have been hits on my personal chart in the past 15 years or so...
Mew “She Came Home For Christmas”
The Water Babies “Under The Tree”
Frightened Rabbit “It's Christmas So We'll Stop”
Laura Marling “Goodbye England (Covered In Snow)”
Julian Casablancas “I Wish It Was Christmas Today”
The Darkness “Christmas Time (Don't Let The Bells End)”
The Black Arts “Christmas Number One”
Los Campesinos! “When Christmas Comes”
!!! (Chk, Chk, Chk) “And Anyway It's Christmas”
The Raveonettes “The Christmas Song”
The Wombats “Is This Christmas?”
Orbital “Christmas Chime”
Smith & Burrows “When The Thames Froze”
Coldplay “Christmas Lights”
The Futureheads “Christmas Was Better In The 80s”
Emmy The Great & Tim Wheeler “Home for the Holidays”
Hurts “All I Want For Christmas Is New Years Day”
Dawn McCarthy & Bonnie "Prince" Billy "Christmas Eve Can Kill You”
Loose Tapestries “Can't Wait For Christmas”
Marching Church “Christmas On Earth”
The Loose Tapestries is itself an underrated CLASSIC.
I forgot about the Futureheads one!!
^ ooh that Mew one is a great one I forgot about!
Boots is a masterpiece.
I got the cd the other year with them all on it!
Always enjoyed this underrated gem - Joni Mitchel River
River is amazing
not sure if it counts as alt/indie/rock
Worth adding to discuss though and for other members to enjoy
Coldplay Christmas Lights probably one of my favourite modern Christmas classics, Chris Martins voice is just so brillant. Peaked at 13 in the UK with strong support by radio although it's midweek release meant it never charted in the top 10!
just remembered this is actually my ultimate favourite xmas track, zero famous, not even sure if there's a studio version, cos I always listen to this live youtube
two Irish singer-songwriters, Lisa Hannigan and Mike Flannery
Absolutely loving Shame's cover of Feliz Navidad from last year!
This one wins the award for best Christmas song title. 'All I Want For Christmas Is A Dukla Prague Away Kit' by Half Man Half Biscuit
This is probably my favourite. I'm a huge Aimee fan and this is just so typically her, she's so underrated
Richard Ashcroft has a cover of 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas' out today
I like this but my favourite version is def by Chris Martin.
Also, this one here is not a Christmas song nor about Christmas, but Fran mentions the upcoming Christmas in the lyrics.
Green Day's 2015 Christmas single 'Xmas Time of the Year' finally came to streaming yesterday!
Not a bad effort from Green Day, have t been too interested in much they e released from the new album so far though.
The video is class, filmed along the Thames.
Back for another year! Lately I've been particularly enjoying power metal band Majestica (fronted by Sabaton's Tommy Johansson) with their new single "Ghost of Christmas Past" from their A Christmas Carol-inspired album out next month! The vocals are particularly beautiful.
Possibly the best Christmas single to come from Japan
By the way love when this topic gets introduced again!
Some I've been enjoying from this year that don't have their own topics:
Vistas - Merry Christmas Everyone (Spotify Singles)
The Academic - Lonely This Christmas
Majestica - Ghost of Marley
Lights - Deck The Halls
Escape The Fate - Christmas Song
August Burns Red - All I Want For Christmas is You
Sabaton are releasing 'A Christmas True' on October 29th! I'm very very excited for this one
Like this punk version of Shakys classic:
The Season's Upon Us by Dropkick Murphy's has to be up there as one of the greatest.
Hurts - All I Want For Christmas Is New Years Day
Smith & Burrows - When The Thames Froze
Their Winter/Christmas album is probably one of my favourite albums of all time
Must check it out!
wow I forgot about that Dropkick Murphys track i remember enjoying that one years ago
I always go to this new wave banger for the perfect hopeless, melancholic christmas mood </3
beabadoobee's previously Apple-exclusive cover of 'Winter Wonderland' has been made available on platforms this year!
I'm also loving Beach Bunny's new one 'Christmas Caller'
I'm still really enjoying this one that I sent to the BJSC spin off a year or two ago. I just find it really warming to listen to and I'm even used to the shrieks of IT'S CHRISTMAS now.
ps I'm assuming it's not actually our Cody singing
Slade’s ‘Merry Xmas Everybody’ now has an official video for the first time ever!
A nice one from In Extremo /if you don't mind German folk metal /
My current BJSC artist has released the following song
Ooh, very groovy!
The 1975's 'Wintering' has (unsurprisingly) massively caught my attention this year I was fully expecting it to be a slow song based on the title!
wait no 100 gecs yet? this must be played every single year:
I believe that had its own thread!
Is ‘Wintering’ a Christmas song?
So R1 might actually playlist a new Xmas track this year if they chose it as a single!
Perhaps, although it’s one of two songs from Being Funny that they aren’t performing live currently - so I doubt it’ll be pushed!
I wasn’t too sure where this should go so feel free to move it if required but it looks like we could be getting a Christmas song from Tom Grennan soon?!

You may not guess that it’s one from the title, but Superorganism released a Christmas song last week!
Following on from 2005's surprisingly decent 'The Gift of Rock', Smash Mouth are back with new Christmas album 'Missle Toes' on November 17th:
Former Nightwish frontwoman Tarja Turunen has released the album 'Dark Christmas' today, featuring symphonic/gothic orchestral versions of some Christmas classics. I'm not sure if I like it or not, but it's definitely interesting from what I've heard!
Some new things which released this week:
Birdy & Skinny Living - I'll Be Home For Christmas (previously an Amazon Exclusive)
Fitz and the Tantrums - Perfect Holiday
Phantom Planet - Maybe You Still Call It Christmas
Middle Kids - Driving Home For Christmas
Norah Jones & Laufey - Christmas With You (EP)
Bon Jovi released "Christmas Isn't Christmas" today!
WOW
Lovely!
instead of her traditional Xmas song this year Phoebe Bridgers released one as Boygenius
a cover of the classic The Parting Glass with Ye Vagabonds
