This from US rapper Lil Nas X which entered the UK Top40 at #39 on Friday and it has continued to climb on Spotify.
What do you make of this?
ooh really like this!
banger
The original is decent, this lifts it up to another level!
This SLAPS *.* Especially the remix.
I'm interested to hear more as this melding of country with trap is so so good, Sam Hunt did some R&B influences but this is taking it even further! There's been controversy with Billboard as they took this off the Country chart and it would have been #1 if it was kept on!
Like this on first listen (the remix), tbh reminds me of the Justin Timberlake album last year which was some sort of country/funk/Timbaland fusion.
Yeah it’s a tune u can’t lie
Hot 100 #1 *.*
I don't know if I want to see country trap becoming a proper trend but I'm here for it for this one song at least - crazy that it's got to #1 on the Hot 100 already and could well be coming for UK #1 this week or next as well! *.*
(Billy Ray's verse on the remix is genuinely not bad as well xx)
It’s managed to get to #1 Without the remix even counting yet
The margins are going to be huge next week
didn't think he was gonna make it this week without the billy ray cyrus version
I LOVE this song! It's taken off over here. Love the Country and Hip-Hop vibes combined.
March Madness, the annual three week, 64 team college basketball competition just finished last night, with Virginia beating Texas Tech in the Final. Texas Tech were 200-1 to reach the final before the season, and were the Cinderella story of the tournament (think of it as Plymouth Argyle or Exeter City reaching the FA Cup Final). They are from Lubbock, a small-ish university city in west Texas with about 350 miles from the next nearest city. It's Cowboy country out there. Anyway, they adopted this song as their anthem a few weeks ago, and they have been going crazy celebrating each unlikely win by blasting this in the changing room.
Managed to climb 37 places to #2 back on Friday in the UK. Strong contender for #1 on Friday? We'll have to wait and see.
1000% sure #1
The more I hear it the more I think of The Lonely Island or Lil Dicky...
It's #1 in today's update so hopefully it can stay there!
The remix kind of ruins it, but the original is brill
I think the remix is absolute genius. I've had it in my head constantly for well over a week - Billy Ray's "rap" is excellent
Edit - the remix is now #1 on the Hot 100 with 143 million streams, breaking the previous record of most streams in a single week set by In My Feelings. Glad it's set to be the UK #1 this week too after being cheated of it last week by the stupid rules regarding Thursday streams
it wasn't cheated last week, wouldn't have been #1, Lewis was too far ahead
Indeed, Lewis was miles ahead, Lil Nas X had no chance...
Just when I thought I couldn't bop any more to this
guess it's all to keep the #1 in the US
bye Taylor
Wow! This is great!
This is a blatant troll but imagine!!
Him leaving out Nicki Minaj tho
Prediction says this will stay at #1 in US with quite a big lead
thanos!
I don't think many would have thought Billy Ray Cyrus would play a part in a UK #1 in 2019.
Video is apparently coming on Friday!
Omg the Diplo cameo!!! I died 🤣
This is a great music video from Lil Nas X. This one of my favourite urban tunes of the year so far.
#1 for a 10th week on the Hot 100! *.*
This still apparently has 3x the chart points of #2 on the Hot 100 and it increased in all categories this week, looking like it has a very strong chance of beating the record for most weeks at #1 ('only' 7 weeks to go until it overtakes 'One Sweet Day' and 'Despacito'). Oh my x
The consistency of its astronomical streaming numbers is unbelievable.
No doubt aided by the fact it's such a short song^ I expect a lot of avid fans will play it 2 maybe 3 times in a "sitting"
And it would in some ways be quite befitting for it to be the longest running #1 ever. When I think of billboard I think of rap & country so this is the THE ultimate song in that respect.
Still overrated as hell tho.
And #1 in the Billboard Hot 100 for an 11th week.
Old Town Road is #1 on the Hot 100 for a record 13th week, the longest running hip hop #1 in chart history! Only three more weeks until it matches One Sweet Day and Despacito's all genre record
In other news, Lil Nas X finally performed the song in the UK on Sunday at Glastonbury during Miley Cyrus's set, with Billy Ray too *.* Watch from 2:35 (he also performed Panini solo but no one cares about that)
Well, this is different...
New remix out with Young Thug and Mason Ramsey (yeah that Wallmart yodel Kid). Doubt this will boost UK sales or streams much at all
Best timeline confirmed
Mason's verse *.
i hate it when lyric videos tell me how wrong i've been singing
Pretty sure some of the lyrics are actually wrong in this video lol x
Mason Ramsey's verse, well..... is interesting.
15th week at #1 in the US, the record will likely be his in 2 weeks with the new remix!
Apparently Billie has closed his lead a lot (from 1.9:1 last week to 1.5:1 this week) and this tracking week only includes one day with the Bieber remix so it might actually be quite close for week 16. I think if he does get that then he'll very likely get to at least 17 though.
i hope he gets it! absolute tune. the new remix is crap tho
You ain't got no giddy up so giddy out my way xx
Lil Nas X & Richard X remix tbh - Liberty X who??
New music video out
Anthony Fantano making a cameo!
Dolly Parton remix out Friday
LMAO NO WAY
This is the gift that keeps on giving *.*
DOLLY OMGG *.*
OMG THE PINK HORSE
I so hope that's real but I'm not sure if it is x
New music video (!!!) out now
YASS hope Dolly will be on it, getting that #1 hit
This has got the 16th week at #1, its lead over 'bad guy' only reduced to 1.3:1. Feels like the record should be in the bag now unless 'bad guy' / something else gets another huge boost from somewhere during the week.
Wow, it actually looks like it's gonna break the record then!
The song is decent but I can't understand why it's been SO huge.
I hope it does it now. just cos that mariah song is so boring and does not deserve it.
Tbh Despacito felt a lot bigger, but I’m all for Lil Nas getting that record!
Go Lil Nas X! It feels like more power to the people than ever before considering that he's doing this largely on streams & sales while radio continue to drop it in favour of Khalid's light blue wallpaper. I love Billie but her getting to #1 because of a crappy Justin Bieber remix would be the worst timeline.
One sweet day was #1 for 16 weeks thanks to payola & airplay... at least this and Despacito are driven by sales... I think Despacito is the biggest song, this has taken advantage from memes and YT, think Despacito used less gimmicks to do it...
Such an unusual combination. I can get used to it though.
i've not actuallyheard this lol... 'despacito' was much bigger... but then again i don't think 'old kent road' is AS big here?
old kent road LMFAO
The absolute mad man is at it again
isn't the dolly parton remix also coming soon?
I hope so
We need a Spanglish version too and then like a remix pack of Kygo, The Chainsmokers and Zedd
maybe it will be #1 in the US forever I could see the appeal of adding Billy Ray Cyrus but some of the latest remixes are kinda useless
He is getting really desperate & pathetic by releasing those countless remixes & videos just for getting curious streams.
Besides, I know if I were that close to breaking the record for most weeks at #1, I'd be doing everything I could to make it happen!
little mix - bounce back needing to take note x
The Billboard record is officially his!!
Mariah vanquished. It could yet spend another week or two there as well.
I'm seeing a lot of people on Reddit speculating that this might make Billboard change their rules to not allow remixes to be combined into one chart entry. I hope they don't do that, it is a rule that can be exploited to some extent clearly but it's not like people consume every new remix as if it's a totally new song.
The record has actually been broken, wow!
And it still has a lead of 1.2:1 as well.
wow, good for him
wouldn't surprise me if Billboard makes some rule change now to prevent a similar situation in the future... Drake could do it and bring a new singer for a new version every week, one week Rihanna, one week Beyonce... and would be #1 forever
We live in the presence of a king
With regards to Billboard changing rules, I'm not sure I see the motivation. We've had remixes be the sole reason songs go to #1 in the past, and we've had streaming result in runs that seem extended beyond common sense as well. But mainly keep in mind that if Lil Nas X breaking a long standing record seems significant, don't forget that for the entire 1980s, songs were almost never lasting more than 3-4 weeks at #1, and then Billboard started tracking airplay more accurately and suddenly Boyz II Men made/matched the record 3 times in the space of 3 years, with a lot of help from a passive component. "Old Town Road" just happens to have had its stars align more so than anything else ("Uptown Funk" & "Despacito" would both also be on 17 weeks if not for their successors bolting to #1 out of nowhere).
(Also it would look like Billboard are still mad about the whole Hot Country thing 5 months later, when they should be grateful at how much traffic Lil Nas X has driven).
I agree with all that
I personally give zero value to One Sweet Day being one 16 weeks when it was 100% due to airplay bought by her husband. The singles chart in the late 90s/early 00s is a joke cos no one was buying singles anymore and in the pre-download days it was all airplay.
and I know songs had had remixes with guests, but usually the 1 remix, only 1, not 1 every week like Lil Nas X... thats why I think Billboard will change the rule
anyway Ariana is coming to stop his run last #1
People still had to actually listen to this remixes though and they did!
I know I know and I'm up for it, just saying Billboard is probably seeing it differently
Good on him!
It's a waaaay better track than 'One Sweet Day' and 'Despacito' so I'm happy.
It’s because he had 17985 remixes.
Flopriah and Desflopcito could never *.*
it's probably the first time i've ADORED a massive chart entry in so long
love her
Well done to Lil Nas X (and Billy Ray Cyrus) for breaking the US chart record, saw it on the news this morning. It will be interesting to see how the follow up does to Old Town Road, and whether he will keep his unique country influenced trap style (I hope he does).
^he's already charted with PANINI
my bad, didn't know, I genuinely thought all these years that no one was buying singles in the US in the early 00s in the pre-itunes days and that it was all airplay
Where did you get "her husband bought all the airplay" from anyway though?
that's nothing new, people have been talking about forever, google it, Mariah has had accusations of payola since day 1
Mariah got married to this Mottola guy who was the owner of Columbia and people were saying he bought airplay time for Mariah in lots of stations, not sure if the rumours are true obviously
Kamaliya could never...
And the 18th week is now confirmed, so Billy Ray Cyrus has now also beaten the old record (he was technically still tied before as the first #1 week for 'Old Town Road' was before his remix came out).
Billy Ray Cyrus already had the record for most consecutive weeks at #1 on the US album chart in the SoundScan era as well (with 'Some Gave All' which also spent 17 weeks in a row at #1), what kind of king!!
only a real icon of country music. when will Bebe Rexha?
We stan a gay icon! Still absolutely loving this, and long may his reign continue!
Rihanna coming to end his reign
Happy he broke the record but they NEED to push Panini now or he's one hit wonder for life.
'Panini' has been doing fine for itself, has been top 10 on US Spotify since release! I hope it can pick up more now but I'd say it's already done enough to say he's not a one hit wonder. He'll just probably never have another hit coming anywhere remotely close to OTR of course, and it remains to be seen if he'll make any more impact with future releases. The longevity of 'Panini' so far is an encouraging sign I think.
so far Panini has been #16 in the US and #25 in the UK, so you cannot call him 1 hit wonder
What I think could still happen is that he ends up becoming one of those artists who *technically* had another hit in the coat-tails of the big hit, but one that is quickly forgotten as a footnote because people like the novelty of a one hit wonder. If you look up a list online of famous one hit wonders, half of them aren't even that. Arguably it was the case for Billy Ray Cyrus until this year
But honestly Lil Nas X strikes me as savvy enough to keep his career going. He seems fairly well-liked as a person behind the song too.
I'll be very surprised if he had the longevity hit like 'Old Town Road' has. 'Panini' has been consistent staying in the Top 40 for a few weeks in the UK.
And it extends its stint at #1 to 19 weeks in the US.
hope it's the last, no one is buying or streaming it anymore, it's just #1 cos of its Youtube views which is silly :/
It's #3 on iTunes and #10 combined on Spotify. That's not no-one, it's actually still very notable...
Question now is:
a) can he beat Black Eyed Peas record of 26 consecutive weeks at the top
b) can he beat Usher's record of 28 weeks at the top in a calendar year
Hopefully the answer to both of these is a resounding NO
It'll be a shame If bad guy never gets the number one now after spending nine weeks at #2 behind OTR, but I can see Señorita being the next number one.
Where the hell is the Panini video? It's so annoying how they're waiting so long. It was filmed ages ago and he's doing absolutely no promo for it and it's not even being added to any playlists...WTF?
Confirmed to be doing Panini at the VMA's!
Old Town Road is no longer US #1, it's down to #3!
What a flop.
'Panini' video now pls.
It was, and still is, #1 on the Streaming Songs chart which includes both audio and video streaming. Billboard doesn't even have separate charts for them. I don't see why YouTube streaming would be any less 'legitimate' than any other form of streaming anyway? If anything surely you should be defending it considering how much you hate passive streaming from playlists counting to charts, which is an issue that doesn't exist (or at least only exists in a very very limited capacity) on YouTube...
For that matter 'Old Town Road' is still #1 on the sales chart again this week as well, so the only reason it's lost the #1 on the Hot 100 is that its radio airplay has died much faster than that of 'bad guy'.
Lol, Panini has went to ACR this week before the video has even been released.
His team really lost the ball with Panini, should've been pushed harder immediately after OTR got that 17th week... Wonder if he already has a new single waiting (that's not on 7 EP)
Yes, I think that they would push 'Rodeo' now during the next few weeks.
