■ Darius Campbell (he used to be known as Darius Danesh from Pop Idol), who will play one of the lead roles in the musical version of From Here To Eternity.
It’s a tale of army life and sexual shenanigans, set on Hawaii as the war in the Pacific kicks off. Campbell will play Sergeant Milton Warden, a tough, buff guy who has an affair with the wife of a superior officer. In Fred Zinnemann’s classic movie, those roles were played by Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr. They were giant roles on the big screen, so I should make clear that this show is based on the James Jones novel, which is much darker than the film. Deborah Kerr and Burt Lancaster in From Here To Eternity Darius Campbell Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr as Sergeant Milton Warden and Karen Holmes in Fred Zinnemann’s classic movie adaptation of From Here To Eternity. Darius Campbell will take Lancaster's role in the musical Darius has a thing about being in musical versions of famous novels and movies — he also played Rhett Butler in Gone With The Wind. From Here To Eternity has lyrics and a lot of input from Tim Rice, so it should fare better than GWTW, which went with a gust. Rehearsals for the new show start in late August, with previews beginning at the Shaftesbury Theatre on September 30. http://westend.broadwayworld.com/article/D...emiere-20130627 This post has been edited by megham: Jun 28 2013, 07:47 AM |

If true, it's another of those can't refuse offers which blow his original plans out of the water.
Will he still be able to fit in his first film role as Lord Harold? I'm pretty sure the film, which he's also co-producing, is set to begin on location shooting in Kenya this summer. Shame if he has to step down. It would have been interesting to see Darius do a lighter, more comedic role. There have been flashes of good timing in all of his roles so far. I wonder if Billy Zane accepted the role he was offered in the musical. Maybe the Ernest Borgnine role? He'd be great because he has the charisma and talent to carry it off. In my opinion, this putative role would gel really well with the style of the album and a ray of optimism is creeping out of the darkness surrounding its release. Thanks for the banner.
Is that the official poster? It looks a wee bit like the GWTW one, where the silhouettes were the fire burning the confederate flag. |

Thanks, pip.
Is it my imagination or does Darius look as if he's bulked up a bit for the part? |

Being honest i wasnt sure what to make of this when i first read about it. My first thought was there goes the long awaited album for another year but then i started thinking at least we'll get to see him again and hopefully we'll see him premote it on some programmes . Its been a long time since we've seen him over here proper. I do support his choice of doing the play. Im glad he's doing something he really wants to and i hope it goes better than Gone with the wind. I'm just disappointed the album being put off again.

Sounds a perfect role for Darius. Just hope this musical is given a fair chance! Sue I second that. Also, I hope that Sir Tim and the director don't try to 'sanitise' the original story like Aldo Scrofani and Sir Trevor Nunn seemed to do with GWTW. From Here To Eternity is a hard hitting book and the Hollywood film producers shied away from many of its themes..........perhaps because they needed the co-operation of the US army? Mind you, I'm not sure how much extra could go in the show because the film was fairly long. |
