From the #ThrowbackThurday on the R&B and Hip-Hop forum. I have been asked by awardinary and Roba to start a 00s edition of this. each Thursday we will get a flashback into the chart with some of the songs from the 00s, they'll be some big hits and not so well-known hits. I hope you enjoy this thread.
This Week:
2003- Avril Lavigne- I'm With You
The first song for this week is: I'm With You was the third single to be released from Avril Lavigne's debut studio album 'Let Gp' This was a different approach from their previous two singles 'Complicated' and 'Sk8er Boi'. This would go on and peak at #7 in the UK. In the US it would fare better and peak at #4. In 2011 this was sampled by Rihanna for her track 'Cheers (Drink To That). This is one of my favourites from Avril Lavigne.
2005- Oasis- Lyla
'Lyla' was the first single to be released from Oasis sixth studio album 'Don't Believe The Truth'. This would go on and become their 7th UK #1 by knocking off Akon's 'Lonely'. At the time when this was released, I remember at primary school, my classmates were annoyed that this knocked off 'Lonely' off the #1 spot. However I enjoyed this song.
2006- Will Young- Who Am I
'Who Am I' was the third single to be released from Will Young's third studio album 'Keep On' The music video at the time I thought was quite bizarre with an montage of clips from Blue Peter with Will superimposed over the presenters, then at the end the announcer says now time for 'John Carven's Newsround'. This would be the first song to miss out the Top 5 and Top 10 for Will Young where it would peak at #11. A music video full of nostalgia for fans of Blue Peter.
Hey Mack, nice mix of picks there.
I'm With You is my fave Avril song and one of the best ballads from this era.
As big as an Oasis fan I am I've never really liked Lyla. So I was also someone who preferred Lonely at #1.
Who Am I is one of Will's best, at least post-Friday's Child (great album that btw).
Good picks there Mack, 'I'm With You' is certainly one of the best ballads of the noughties and would likely feature on a all time ballads list as well, for several people here no doubt.
'Lyla' is good but I prefer 'The Importance Of Being Idle' that followed and 'Who Am I' deserved to be another top 5 for Will. Shame it missed the top 10 and had a great video to boot!
Yay thanks Mack, it’s great to have you do this and each week we can chat about our memories of the tracks you share! So here goes mine for this week;
Avril Lavigne was one of the most successful female recording artists of the decade and I owned her debut album from which this song was taken, it was certainly an emotional one and showcased the potential star that she was going to become.
Oasis had a few good hits in this decade, and Lyla was quite a surprising UK #1 single, and I wouldn’t say one of my favourites from the, either at the time. Maybe I will enjoy it more in the future but it’s not one I revisit much really.
Will Young released a very nostalgic music video for Who Am I that I recall without rewatching it, I remember scenes reenacted from Blue Peter. It was probably my favourite song from this era from him, and I am glad it made the release of Now That’s What I Call Music! 64 at the time.
Looking forward to next week!
You're more than welcome.
I thought 'Lyla' was a surprise #1 at the time as well
Maybe cause I wasn't following the charts at that point but I wouldn't have guessed 'Lyla' was a surprise #1 tbh lol.
The previous 4 Oasis lead singles were #1s, so Lyla didn't strike me as a surprise #1 really.
This Week:
2003- t.A.t.U- Not Gonna Get Us
The first song for this week is: 'Not Gonna Get Us' which was the second single from Russian music duo t.A.T.u's first English-language album '200 km/h in the Wrong Lane'. The music video attracted less attention compared to 'All The Things She Said'. This may be a controversial view but I prefered this to 'All The Things She Said'. I think when I saw this on Top of The Pops it was the music video that was played instead of a live performance. This would go on to peak at #7 in the UK.
2004- Special D- Come With Me
'Come With Me' was the only hit in the UK for German DJ 'Special D'. This was played at the school disco back when I was in Year 5 and it did get people on the dancefloor. This would peak at #6 in the UK. This would probably be a staple on those Ministry of Sound and Clubfillers dance albums.
2007- Manic Street Preachers ft Nina Persson- Your Love Alone Is Not Enough
'Your Love Alone Is Not Enough' was the second single to be released from Manic Street Preachers' eighth studio album 'Send Away The Tigers'. This would feature Nina Persson who is the lead singer of Swedish ban The Cardigans. I remember being gutted that this didn't go to #1 which lost out to the allstar collaboration from that time which was Beyonce/Shakira's 'Beautiful Liar'.
Great trio there. I loved all of tatu's 3 UK hits.
'Not Gonna Get Us' is a fantastic song from t.A.T.u. also like the other two there as well.
Commentary now included.
Kinda passed me by that Nina was the Cardigans lead singer lol. Makes sense obviously with her voice.
A day later due to the Buzzjack outage
This Week:
2002- Ant & Dec- We're On The Ball
The first song for this week, be warned it's an unpopular choice it's Ant & Dec with their official song for the 2002 FIFA World Cup with 'We're On The Ball'. I'm sorry to include this, it is a song that I do listen to when its the Euros and Worlds. It makes references to that 5-1 win over Germany on 1st September 2001. At the time this would be Ant & Dec's highest charting song which would peak at #3. It makes references of the England football team.
2005- Gorillaz ft De La Soul- Feel Good Inc.
The first song for this week is 'Feel Good Inc.' which was the lead single from Gorillaz's second studio album' 'Demon Days'. This would feature vocals from US hip-hop group 'De La Soul'. I would consider this song to be one of my favourite songs of all time, 'Feel Good Inc.' topped my Top 100 Songs of the 2000s which is on the Countdowns and End of Years Charts for those who want to have a look which I did back in 2015. I said this about the song at the time:
Didn't mind 'We're On The Ball' personally. 'Feel Good Inc' is great and 'Red' is one of the best male ballads of the noughites for me.
Never heard of Daniel Merryweather in my life :loń: Song sounds alright though tbh.
Hey Mack,
Sincere apologies for my lack of input on this thread, let me catch up;
t.A.T.u are of course an icon of the 2000s albeit for a short time period, and this lesser remembered single was quite a good one, I like the production and I’m glad it was able to give the duo another hit to their name, as well as featuring on the 55th volume in the Now That’s What I Call Music series. I would have liked more hits from them I think.
Come With Me was a song that emerged toward the end of that dance era of trance and techno, but it was surely one of the better dance releases of 2004. I was reading that there is a song in a current song contest on BuzzJack that sounds just like this apparently, I am yet to hear it.
That Manics song was not one of their highlights for me but I guess it wasn’t too bad, I don’t think I have heard it in some years though. Nice that Nina of The Cardigans could have a hit to her name though I guess. Did she ever have another solo hit she was credited with?
I have a soft spot for We’re On The Ball. It featured England legends of the time! One of my earworm World Cup songs for sure haha. I have no issues with it being included here and I too give it a spin on my football playlist whenever it’s Euros or World Cup season.
Gorillaz next with what I guess is their most famous hit? Although I think I have others favourites I prefer to this one personally, but still a solid choice of single and great to see it’s one of your favourite songs of all time Mack!
And for Red, I don’t seem to recall much about it at the time, but it sounds like a nice ballad. I guess he was the in thing for a brief time, but he didn’t seem to have any follow up hits to this one I do t think. Mark Ronson put him on the map didn’t he.
This Week:
2000- Madison Avenue- Don't Call Me Baby
The first song for this week is: 'Don't Call Me Baby' from Australian house music dupo Madison Avenue which originally peaked at #30 in the UK, this was re-released of May of 2000 which would peak at #1 in the UK. I do remember seeing the music video for this on Top of The Pops. It is a song that would feature on numerous dance albums. This is still a great tune from Madison Avenue.
2001- Travis- Sing
'Sing' which was the lead single from Travis' third studio album 'The Invisible Band'. This would peak at #3 in the UK. In the music video it features the band at a dinner party at a mansion and getting into a food fight. In the Top of The Pops performance, the band members would throw pies at each other and the audience. I remember that performance on Top of The Pops quite well. 'Sing' I would regard this as a good song from Travis.
2003- XTM & DJ Chucky present Annia- Fly On The Wings of Love
The final song for this week:'Fly On The Wings Of Love' was a cover version of Denmark's 2000 Eurovision Song Contest winner from the Olsen Brothers. Spanish dance act XTM would record and release a version of this song as dance track with DJ Chucky and vocals from Annia. This would peak at #8 in the UK. I quite enjoyed the animated music video of this, it was one that was on the playlist on my local radio at the time, I remember hearing this a lot during the 2003 heatwave that we had.
Madison Avenue for me!
A fan of all of those three. 'Don't Call Me Baby' is one you still hear lots on radio today. 'Sing' is perhaps my favourite Travis track and that video was great with of course the food fight. 'Fly On The Wings Of Love' dance version was infinitely superior to that Eurovision one!
Doing this earlier this week due to being busy:
This Week:
2000- Darude- Sandstorm
The first song for this week is: 'Sandstorm' This is a absolute modern dance classic from Finnish DJ Darude. Still a tune 23 years on. This song came 83rd in my Top 100 Songs of the 2000s. This would peak at #3 in the UK.
2003- Tomcraft- Loneliness
'Loneliness' would be a one-hit wonder for German DJ Tomcraft (Thomas Bruckner). This would go on and become a UK #1 for him. Me aged 9 probably didn't understand at the time how monoumentous this song would be. Unfortunately this song was knocked off the #1 spot by the disgraced R Kelly.
2007- Hellogoodbye- Here (In Your Arms)
The final song for this week is another one-hit wonder this time from Hellogoodbye with 'Here (In Your Arms)'. This would go on and peak at #4 in the UK, in the US this would peak at #13. I remember this being played a lot on radio stations and music channels during the spring/summer of that year with what may be one of the iconic music videos of that year. This is still quite catchy and it would never get old.
Been a lot of links to 'Here (In Your Arms) lately but no bad thing as it's my fave from that bunch.
This Week:
2002- Nickelback- How You Remind Me
The first song for this week, be warned it probably is a unpopular choice it is Nickelback with 'How You Remind Me' which was the lead single from their studio album 'Silver Side Up' This was considered to be Nickelback's signature song'. This would peak at #4 in the UK, in the US this would fare better and peak at #1 in the Billboard Hot 100 where it stay there for four weeks in November 2001. I would consider this probably to be one of my favourite songs of all time, an controversial choice yes I know. I can remember this coming out in 2002, but probably didn't listen to as much, that is until 'Rockstar' came out, it become a huge part of my teenage years. This since then this has become a staple on any playlist. It is catchy as anything this. I see this as an motivational song for me if I'm feeling down.
2004- Natasha Bedingfield- Single
'Single' was the debut single from Natasha Bedingfield for her debut album 'Unwritten'. This would go on and peak at #3 in the UK, it would also chart in the US at #57 in the Billboard Hot 100. Someone from my primary school can sent out for singing this during a Maths lesson, this is was an all right debut single from Natasha.
2009- Agnes- Release Me
'Release Me' was the debut single in the UK for Swedish singer Agnes. This would go on and peak at #3 in the UK. I remember this being played a lot on the music channels during May and the summer months from that year, I was quite annoyed that this didn't go to #1 from her, she would later follow-up in the UK with 'I Need You Now' which only just scraped into the Top 40 at #40. Haven't heard 'Release Me' in a long time but it still sounds great.
That is very brave to state that opinion about Nickelback on here
'Release Me' is an absolute anthem
"Release Me" was # 6 in my worst songs list from 2009 year.
There is literally nothing wrong with Nickelback. People only jump on the “hate Nickelback train” because it looked cool on social media.
Where there's smoke there's fire though...
(although I do actually really like 'How You Remind Me')
This Week:
2000- Billie Piper- Day & Night
The first song for this week is a UK #1 from Billie Piper. This was the lead single from her second album 'Walk of Life' It would be Billie's third and final UK #1. I much prefer this to her other two UK #1s. I remember hearing this for some bizarre reason in an episode of Coronation Street in 2002 playing in the background at the Platts house in a scene involving Sarah Platt and Ade Critchley.
2005- Backstreet Boys- Incomplete
'Incomplete' was the first single in four years for the Backstreet Boys who had taken a two-year hiatus. It was taken from their fifth studio album 'Never Gone', This would go on and peak at #8 in the UK, in the US it would chart at #13. I can vaguely watching the music video for this on The Hits and also a clip in a piece where they would have the latest music videos with a number where viewers could phone in and select a track with the selection number.
2007- Jack Penate- Torn On The Platform
'Torn On The Platform' was the third single from Jack Penate's debut album 'Matinee'. This would go on and become his biggest hit in the UK by peaking at #7. This is an all right song from Jack Penate, can't say I remember listening to this when it was released. I like his other songs as well 'Second, Minute or Hour' and from 2009 which had should have done better than #35, 'Be The One'.
Day & Night is by a country mile her best song!
Love that Jack Penate track too, that was the type of landfill indie that was really great back then.
'Day & Night'
This Week:
2004- Maroon 5- This Love
The first song for this week is 'This Love' was the second single from Maroon 5's debut album 'Songs About Jane' This would go on and peak at #3 in the UK, in the US this would peak at #5 in the Billboard Hot 100. I'm a fan of this from Maroon 5, it is probably one of the best that they did, would listen to any day over 'Moves Like Jagger'. I think the music video attracted controversy due to some certain scenes between Adam Levine and his girlfriend.
2005- The Coral- In The Morning
'In The Morning' was the lead single from The Coral's third studio album 'The Invisible Invasion'. This would go and peak at #6 in the UK. 'In The Morning' I remember hearing this a lot during 2005 and it is a song that I wouldn't tire of listening to this. If there is a Buzzjack's Favourite #6 Hit this would definitely get my vote. When I was taken to school by my taxi driver in my final year in primary school, he would play this on repeat. This deserved a better chart run of only 6 weeks in the Top 40. This song will be always on any playlist that I have.
2007- The Hoosiers- Worried About Ray
'Worried About Ray' was the debut single from The Hoosiers taken from their debut album 'The Trick To Life'. This would go on and peak at #5 in the UK. I was quite a fan of this when this was released, I can remember making an version with a old schoolmate of mine called 'Worried About Chris'. Now this isn't one that I haven't heard for a while on the radio, rarely hear this been played anymore. It is very catchy this although I can see why some people might find this annoying.
Link to the music video:
https://tidal.com/browse/video/24412475
Three lovely picks this week Mack!
This Love was probably the single to convince me to buy the album Songs About Jane and I definitely prefer the earlier stiff from these guys.
I had not even heard of The Coral before hearing this song upon its release, but it is certainly one of the better releases of that time period.
When The Hoosiers came onto the scene with this release I just knew it was going to be lots of fun to hear their music and the successive singles proved this!
Really like all 3 of those but especially the first 2!
In The Morning reminds me of car rides to school with Radio 1 playing.
This Love definitely one of M5's best, although I think Harder To Breathe just slightly edges it for me these days,
This Week:
2001- Gorillaz- 19/2000
I remember this song particularly for this game intro:
The first song for this week is '19-2000' from Gorillaz which was the second single from their self-titled debut album. This would go on and peak at #6 in the UK, I particularly remember this for being the title theme for the first game I brought which was FIFA Football 2002. This was a decent song from Gorillaz. Again a song that I could not tire of. I must have really frustrated my parents during 2002 the amount of times they heard on this on FIFA Football 2002.
2002- Atomic Kitten- It's OK
'It's OK!' was the lead single from Atomic Kitten's second studio album 'Feels So Good'. This would go and peak at #3 in the UK becoming their 6th UK Top 10 hit. This was a song that I remember hearing a lot in the radio or at shops playing in the background when shopping with my Mum or Dad. This is one that I haven't heard for a while but listening to it now it's a great tune from Atomic Kitten. This should have been a UK #1 for them alongside 'Whole Again', 'Eternal Flame' and 'The Tide Is High'.
2003- Christina Aguilera- Fighter
'Fighter' was the third single from Christina Aguilera's fourth studio album 'Stripped'. This would go and peak at #3 in the UK, in the US this would peak at #20. This may be a controversial opinion but I very much prefer 'Fighter' to 'Beautiful'. This is a fantastic tune from Christina, it again should have joined 'Dirrty' and 'Beautiful' as a UK #1 for her.
'This Love', '19/2000' - the soulchild remix >>>>, 'It's Ok' and 'Fighter' are all faves here and 'Worried About Ray' and 'In The Morning' are also decent too!
This Week:
2002- Elvis vs JXL- A Little Less Conversation
2004- Britney Spears- Everytime
2005- Green Day- Wake Me Up When September Ends
Commentary will follow.
Among Britney and Green Day's best respectively and I do like ALLC but it's never been a big fave and sometimes can grate tbh.
This Week:
2000- Ronan Keating- Life Is A Rollercoaster
[b]2003- DJ Sammy- Sunlight
2005- Coldplay- Speed of Sound
Commentary will follow.
A good Ronan track imo. 'Sunlight' is lovely as evident from listening to DJ Sammy's album at the start of the year and poor Coldplay being denied by that pesky thing.
This Week:
2000- S Club 7- Reach
The first song for this week is: 'Reach' which was the lead single from S Club 7's second studio album '7'. This would go and peak at #2 in the UK. It was the theme tune to the second series of the group's CBBC series 'L.A 7'. I can remember this was massive during that year of 2000, the times of coming home from school and watching L.A 7'. It is quite a poignant song to listen to now following the sad news earlier this year of Paul Cattermole who passed away.
2003- Triple 8- Give Me A Reason
'Give Me A Reason' was the second single for Triple 8. They were marketed to be Britain's answer to *NSYNC. This would peak at #9 in the UK. Despite this they were dropped in 2004 leaving their debut album 'Heavy W8' unreleased. I can vaguely remember it from them, it was OK from them.
2009- The Veronicas- Untouched
'Untouched' was the debut single to be released in the UK for Austalian duo The Veronicas from their second studio album 'Hook Me Up'. It was originally released in Australia in 2007. In the UK it was released in 2009 where it would peak at #8 in the UK for them. It would remian in the UK Top 10 for them for 5 weeks, in the US this would peak at #17 for them. Probably didn't appreciate this song when it was released, but throughout the years it is one that I wouldn't tire of.
Untouched is such a good song!
But yeah Reach is THAT bop!
I remember hearing Untouched on the Fifa 09 soundtrack way before it became a UK chart hit. Both that and 4ever are great songs.
The timing of 'Untouched' popping up here at this time (you'll know in a day or two x). I was one of the only ones not keen on it but that's down to the squeaky vocals for me especially back then. I've grown to like it more now though after being a fan of a lot of The Veronica's stuff in the last decade. The strings/violin intro and elsewhere have always been a great piece on it though.
'Reach' is joyous pop banger and I'll have to check Triple 8 as I don't think I've heard that or anything of theirs but it was in 2003 when I wasn't following quite so much!
This Week:
2001- S Club 7- Don't Stop Movin'
The first song for this week is from I apologize I know we saw them last week but it is another song from S Club 7 with 'Don't Stop Movin' which was the lead single from their third studio album 'Sunshine'. This would have feature lead vocals from Bradley and Jo. This would go and reach #1 in the UK and become the first song in 3 years to have two runs at #1. This was probably their signature song, this is an anthem from them and it is a pop classic from them. I remember listening to this a heck of a lot. I remember thinking when thinking one of the lyrics was the ass club beat, not S Club beat.
2004- O-Zone- Dragostea Din Tei
This may not be a popular choice or not, but we have this from Moldovan pop group O-Zone. This would go and peak at #3 in the UK where it would stay in the UK Top 10 for 9 weeks, also known as the 'Numa Numa song' and was part of one viral video 'Numa Numa' from Gary Brolsma. In 2008 this was sampled by rapper T.I which featured Rihanna in 'Live Your Life'. This was everywhere when this came out, I was a fan of this and still am.
2006- Supermode- Tell Me Why
'Tell Me Why' was a song that was produced by Swedish DJs Steve Angello and Axwell under the name 'Supermode' This would interpolate two Bronski Beat songs which were 'Smalltown Boy' and 'Why'. This would go and peak at #13 in the UK. In the music video, it featured go karters having a race and three woman in there for some reason. This is a great tune from them, I think I remember liking it because there were go-karters in it at the time.
I adore Liene Candy's cover version of O-Zone hit, it was # 1 in my chart.
I wish there was more from that boyband. I feel like they arrived at a crucial time in my gay awakening
O-zone is naff but it's quite the tune ngl. 'Don't Stop Movin' is a pop banger and the Supermode track is great also!
The lead signer from O-Zone Dan Balan put out this brilliant pop song in 2012:
This Week:
2001- Five- Let's Dance
'Let's Dance' was the first single from Five's third studio album 'Kingsize'. This would go on and peak at #1 in the UK becoming their 3rd and final UK #1. In the music video they had to use a life sized cardboard image of Swan Conlon as he had left the band. It can't say I remember this song that well, probably one of the forgettable 00s #1s in my view, although I may be wrong. This would be their penultimate single before they split up as a month later after this was released they announced their split. To find more on the rise and fall of Five, I would recommend this:
2003- Radiohead- Go To Sleep
'Go To Sleep' was the second single from Radiohead's sixth studio album 'Hail to the Thief'. This would go and peak at #12 in the UK. This would only stay in the UK Top 40 for two weeks with a chart run of 12-38 and the next week it dropped down to #55.
2008- Biffy Clyro- Mountains
'Mountains' was originally released as a non-album single for Biffy Clyro. But it would later be included on their fifth studio album 'Only Revolutions' the following year. This would go and become their highest-charting single in the UK by peaking at #5 in the UK. Was definitely a fan of this track when it came out, I don't really hearing it much until it was released. It was also used as a tribute to rally driver Colin McRae in Dirt 2.
This Week:
2000- The Corrs- Breathless
The first song for this week is from: The Corrs with 'Breathless'. This was the first single from their third studio album 'In Blue'. This would go and become their only UK #1. I remember when this came out, I thought they were singing 'Leave me Bradley' instead of 'Leave me breathless'. This is a song that I have in recent years become a staple in my playlist, it's a bloomin brilliant song from them.
2001- Robbie Williams- Eternity
'Eternity' was the fifth single from Robbie Williams' third studio album 'Sing When You're Winning. This was released a double A-side with 'The Road to Mandalay'. This would go and become Robbie Williams' fourth UK #1. I vaguely remember this from him when it was first released, and then seeing this on the music video channels, this is all right from him.
2005- Razorlight- Somewhere Else
'Somewhere Else' was featured as a bonus track on the re-release of Razorlight's debut album 'Up All Night'. This would go and peak at #2 in the UK which Razorlight's biggest hit to date at the time. This came 75th in my Top 100 Songs of the 2000s, I said this about it:
'Somewhere Else' is such a blast, Razorlight's best song for me.
'Breathless' also I know it's not his most exciting single but I have always had a soft spot for 'Eternity' and bought it on CD!
This Week:
2000- *NSYNC- It's Gonna Be Me
The first song for this week is from: *NSYNC with their follow-up to 'Bye Bye Bye', 'It's Gonna Be Me'. This was the second single from their third studio album 'No Strings Attached'. This would go and peak at #9 in the UK, in the US this would fare better and peak at #1 in the Billboard Hot 100 where it would stay at #1 for two weeks. this was a decent follow-up to 'Bye Bye Bye', I thought this peaked higher in the UK than #9. Might be just me but when Justin Timberlake sings 'It's Gonna Be Me', it sounds like 'It's Gonna Be May'.
2006- P!nk- U + Ur Hand
'U + Ur JHand' was the third single from P!nk's fourth studio album 'I'm Not Dead'. This would go on and peak at #10 in the UK, In the US this would fare one place better by peaking at #9 in the Billboard Hot 100. This is a great song from Pink, probably one that I have rediscovered this since starting these series. I think this did cause controversy because of the title of the song.
2008- Madonna- Give It 2 Me
'Give It 2 Me' was the second single from Madonna's eleventh studio album 'Hard Candy'. This would go on and peak at #7 in the UK, in the US this would peak at #57 in the Billboard Hot 100 where it would stay there for one week. This had backing vocals from Pharrell Williams where he would feature in the music video. This isn't one that I have heard for a while but nevertheless this still sounds great from Madonna. I wasn't sure at the time when it was released why Madonna suddenly sings 'get stupid' repeatedly during the song. This was produced by the Neptunes.
'Give It 2 Me' was fine but a comedown from '4 Minutes' for me!
Doing next week's edition earlier as I'm away next week
This Week (21st September
2006- Muse- Supermassive Black Hole
The first song for this week is: 'Supermassive Black Hole' was the lead single from Muse's fourth studio album 'Black Holes and Revelations'. This would on and become their highest charting single in the UK by peaking at #4 in the UK. This is up there with one of my favourite Muse songs with this and 'Uprising'. This also featured in the FIFA 07 soundtrack.
2007- Axwell ft Max C- I Found U
'I Found You' was a song that was done by Swedish DJ Axwell which featured Max'C. This would go on and peak at #6 in the UK. I haven't heard this in years I can honestly say.
2009- Jason Mraz- I'm Yours
'I'm Yours' was the lead single from Jason Mraz's third studio album 'We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things...'. This would go on and peak at #11 in the UK where it would spend 29 weeks in the UK Top 40 in 2009. In the US this would fare better by peaking at #6 in the Billboard Hot 100. This seemed to be in the charts forever in 2009, it was a song that just wouldn't go away.
Muse and Jason Mraz!
They both came to slay with those, and slay they did!
'Supermassive Black Hole' is a tune but I do prefer the 2 follow ups to it.
and 'I'm Yours' was a song I did enjoy to begin with but it never did sod off for a year practically. I might still enjoy it like the first time had I perhaps not listened to the chart every week
This Week:
2003- Evanescence- Going Under
The first song for this week is 'Going Under' which was the second single from Evanescence's debut album 'Fallen'. This would go on and peak at #6 in the UK. Recently discovered this and it is a masterpiece from them, a decent follow-up to 'Bring Me To Life'.
2007- Scouting For Girls- She's So Lovely
Be warned, the next song may not be a popular choice but it is 'She's So Lovely' from Scouting For Girls' self-titled debut album. This would go on and peak at #7 in the UK, I would say this is a guilty pleasure of mine.
2008- Basshunter- Angel In The Night
'Angel In The Night' was the third single from Basshunter's debut UK album 'Now You're Gone- The Album' This was part 3 of the music videos which featured model Aylar Lie and followed up from his previous music video 'All I Ever Wanted'. This would go on and peak at #14 in the UK.
'Going Under' what a awesome track. First and only CD I have of Evanescence's. Should invest in getting Fallen tbh so it's in my collection at least. 'Angel In The Night' I enjoy a lot too, less said about Scouting for Girls though... personally speaking lol!
Doing next week's edition earlier as I'm busy next week
This Week:
2002- Nickelback- Too Bad
The first song for this week is: 'Too Bad' which was the second UK single to be released by Nickelback which was from their third sutdio album 'Silver Side Up'. This would go and peak at #9 in the UK, in the US this was released the year before where it would peak at #42 in the Billboard Hot 100. Again this is an unpopular choice probably here on Buzzjack, but I do particularly like this song from Nickelback.
2003- Busted- Sleeping With The Light On
'Sleeping With The Light On' was the fourth single from Busted's self-titled debut album. This would go on and peak at #3 in the UK. I have tried sleeping with the light on and it isn't something that I can do. I can remember in primary school that most people in my class were obsessed with this song. Probably one of their underrated songs and one that has probably aged well.
2004- Groove Armada ft Gramma Funk- I See You Baby (Fatboy Slim Remix)
'I See You Baby' was a re-release from Groove Armada which featured Gram'ma Funk, thanks to a Fatboy Slim remix and also featuring on a Renault Megane. Originally the song peaked at #17 in November 1999. Thanks to a reissue of this song from the compliation album 'The Best of Groove Armada' this would outpeak its original position which it would peak at #11. I can remember this song from the Renault advert and also wondered why I could get sent out of class at primary school for singing this during a Biology lesson. And also that awkward moment where you sing this during that Renault Megane advert and my parents walked in.
The Renault Megane advert:
'Sleeping With The Light On' is one of my faves by Busted. 'Too Bad' is good also imo!
People do be finding the concept of opinions incomprehensible in this forum recently
People do be saying things behind a screen that they know will get a reaction on a forum though recently
Yes, and you got my reaction so congrats
(I'm being a bit facetious but just noting this is the second time this week there's been a post here insinuating people are voting in polls for some reason other than expressing their actual opinion as if it's not possible that people might actually just not like certain songs/artists, I'm not sure what the implication being made is)
Regarding Nickelback specifically I do think there's an element of people being hyperbolic because it's a bit of a meme that they're the worst band ever etc. but there's a reason they have that reputation in the first place! I do like some of their songs ('How You Remind Me' in particular is great) but the majority of their hits are... not so good x
This Week:
2002- P!nk- Just Like A Pill
The first song for this week is from: P!nk with 'Just Like A Pill' which was the third single from her second studio album 'Missundaztood'. This would go on and peak at #1 in the UK becoming her second UK #1. In the US this would peak at #8 in the Billboard Hot 100. I would regard this as one of P!nk's defining songs. This would came 81st in my Top 100 Songs of the 2000s which I did back in 2015.
2006- Robbie Williams- Rudebox
Be warned this may not be a popular choice but we have Robbie Williams with 'Rudebox' from his seventh studio album of the same name. This would peak at #4 in the UK. This was considered to be one of Robbie Williams' worst song but I don't think it is. I was a fan of this from Robbie.
2009- The Saturdays- Forever Is Over
'Forever Is Over' was the lead single from The Saturdays second studio album 'Wordshaker'. This would go and peak at #2 in the UK which at the time tied with their highest-charting single at the time which was their Comic Relief cover of 'Just Can't Get Enough'. After being denied by Flo Rida for the #1 spot back in March it was another rapper which would deny them again this time in Chipmunk. This is one that I haven't heard for a long time from The Saturdays. It still sounds great today, I can remember this listening to a lot following a break-up I had.
'Just Like A Pill'
Not a fan of 'Rudebox' but I admire his switch up and I guess it paid off with a top 5 peak to boot. 'Lovelight' & 'She's Madonna' are far superior though!
'Forever Is Over' is great too and despite it missing out on #1 feels more forgotten among their discography imo!
Not heard Forever Is Over since 2009! Surprisingly still decent.
This Week:
2001- DJ Otzi- Hey Baby
The first song for this week is from I apologize this really isn't a popular choice it is: 'Hey Baby' from Austria artist DJ Otzi. This would go on and peak at #1 in the UK where it would stay there for one week, the following year there would be a World Cup version of this released where that would peak at #10. This is probably one that I would hear at parties or in darts where it used as Tony O'Shea's walk-on music. This was originally done by Bruce Channel back in 1962.
World Cup Version:
Original Version:
Tony O'Shea Walk-On
2004- Busted- Thunderbirds/3AM
I apologize it isn't another popular choice but it is Busted with their double A-side single 'Thunderbirds/3AM'. It was released as the fourth single from their second studio album 'A Present For Everyone' It was mostly 'Thunderbirds' that got the airplay which was written for the film 'Thunderbirds' did that really happen?. It would go on and peak at #1 in the UK becoming Busted's fourth and final UK #1 hit. I can remember 'Thunderbirds' quite a bit but not necessary for the right reasons, I'm not sure if 'Thunderbirds' has aged well. '3AM' however I don't remember hearing this on the radio or the music channels until the following year, I know out of the two, I would prefer '3AM'. I don't think the live-action film of Thunderbirds fared well.
2007- Mika- Big Girl (You Are Beautiful)
'Big Girl (You Are Beautiful)' was the fourth single from Mika's debut album 'Life Is Cartoon Motion'. This would go on and peak at #9 in the UK. From the singles he released I would regard this as his weakest, I wasn't a fan of this when this came out. It wasn't up there with his previous singles. This song would later be used by someone in a talent show that I watched back in 2019 where they would finish second.
'Big Girl' >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 'Love Today' for me but I'd rank it in the middle of his singles after 'Grace Kelly' and 'Happy Ending'!
3AM is actually pretty decent!
This Week:
2000- Zombie Nation- Kernkraft 400
'Kernkraft 400' was the debut single from German techno musician Zombie Nation. This would go and peak at #2 in the UK, this did chart in the US at #99 in the Billboard Hot 100. This is an absolute dance classic from Zombie Nation, it has been used as a sports chant or played in football games if their team scores or for wins.
2002- Will Young- Light My Fire
'Light My Fire' was a cover of The Door's version but an arrangement by Jose Feliciano was used for Will Young's second single from his debut album 'From Now'. He had originally sung this in the final 50 of 'Pop Idol' which went on to win. This would go on and become Will Young's second UK #1 where it would stay at #1 for 2 weeks.
2002- Foo Fighters- All My Life
'All My Life' was the first single from Foo Fighters' fourth album 'One by One'. This would go on and peak at #5 in the UK it would their highest charting single in the UK at that time which would be beaten by 'Best of You' in 2005. In the US this would peak at #43 in the Billboard Hot 100. This isn't one that I hear that often regarding Foo Fighters. Nevertheless this is a good song from them.
'Kernfraft 400' is that Halloween anthem *.*
This Week:
2004- Noise Next Door- Lock Up Your Daughters/ Ministry of Mayhem
'Lock Up Your Daughters' was the first single from The Noise Next Door which included a B-side to a certain theme tune of the CITV Saturday morning show 'Ministry of Mayhem'. Can't say I remember 'Lock Up Your Daughters' to be honest but the B-side, I remember it very well from it thanks to 'Ministry of Mayhem' which was presented by Stephen Mulhern, Holly Willoughby and Michael Underwood. This particular single would go and peak at #12 in the UK.
2006- Snow Patrol- You're All I Have
'You're All I Have' was the lead single from Snow Patrol's fourth studio album 'Eyes Open'. This would go and peak at #7 in the UK. I was quite a fan of this when this came out.
2008- Miley Cyrus- See You Again
'See You Again' was the second single from Miley Cyrus' second studio album 'Breakout'. Thanks this remix from Rock Mafia this was released internationally. This would go and peak at #11 in the UK, in the US this would peak at #10 in the Billboard Hot 100. I remember being quite gutted when this missed out in the Top 10 in the UK. A good debut single from Miley Cyrus.
A great Snow Patrol track there and I really did enjoy 'See You Again' too although a major guilty pleasure at the time and topped my chart which felt weird at the time but such a mega bop!
This Week:
2000- Coldplay- Trouble
2007- Take That- Rule The World
2009- Calvin Harris- Flashback
This Week:
2002- Jan Wayne- Because The Night
Which was a cover of Patti Smith's version:
And covered in 2008 by Cascada:
'Because The Night' was a cover of Patti Smith's version, this version from German DJ Jan Wayne would go on and peak at #14 in the UK, Jan Wayne also had an previous hit the previous year where he covered Bonnie Tyler's 'Total Eclipse of The Heart' where that would peak at #28 in the UK. Patti Smith's original version would peak at #5 in the UK. In 2008 this once again was covered this time German dance act Cascada where their version would peak at #28 in the UK. All three versions sound great in my view.
2008- Girls Aloud- The Promise
'The Promise' was the lead single for Girls Aloud's fifth and final studio album 'Out of Control'. This would go and peak at #1 in the UK where it would become their 4th UK #1 it would stay at one week. At the time I quite liked it when it came out however my interest in this waned as it was overplayed, although now it is an poignant song following Sarah Harding's death in 2021.
2009- Robbie Williams- You Know Me
'You Know Me' was the second single from Robbie Williams' eighth studio album 'Reality Killed The Video Star'. This would go on and peak at #6 in the UK. I very much preferred this to 'Bodies'.
Sorry not sorry but I really like 'You Know Me' (which I know it's a major fave for some) and whilst not really a Christmas song at all feels Christmassy to me!
Same goes for Cascada's cover of 'Because The Night' as well
The Jan Wayne version is good too though. 'The Promise' I did like for a while but soon got on my nerves!
This Week:
2002- Madonna- Die Another Day
Opening titles:
2004- McFly- Room On The 3rd Floor
2008- Katy Perry- Hot N Cold
Commentary will follow due to personal reasons.
This Week:
2002- Britney Spears- I Love Rock 'N' Roll
'I Love Rock 'N' Roll was the fourth European single from Britney Spears' third studio album 'Britney'. This a cover version of the Arrows which was done in 1975, six years later this would be covered by Joan Jett & the Blackhearts. Britney's version would peak at #13 in the UK. This cover version is quite good from Britney, this song was used in her film from that year 'Crossroads'.
Joan Jett & the Blackhearts version:
Which was sampled by:
Original Version:
Covered by Ladbaby:
2005- The Darkness- One Way Ticket
'One Way Ticket' was the lead single from The Darkness' second studio album 'One Way Ticket to Hell...And Back. This would go on and peak at #8 in the UK. This is one that I haven't heard since this it came out.
2006- Nelly Furtado- All Good Things (Come To An End)
'All Good Things (Come to an End)' was the third European single to be released from Nelly Furtado's third studio album 'Loose'. This would go on and peak at #4 in the UK, in the US this would peak at #86 in the Billboard Hot 100. This features uncredited harmonies from Coldplay's Chris Martin. Haven't heard this for a while but it still sounds good.
This Week:
2000- Bon Jovi- Thank You For Loving Me
'Thank You For Loving Me' was the third European single to be released from Bon Jovi's seventh studio album 'Crush'. This would go on and peak at #12 in the UK, in the US this would peak at #57 in the Billboard Hot 100. The first of a couple this week I haven't heard since this it came out, although I don't particularly remember this one from Bon Jovi. This sounds all right from Bon Jovi.
2001- Hear'Say- Everybody
'Everybody' was the first single to be released from Hear'Say's second studio album in a year of the same name. This would go on and peak at #4 in the UK. This was the last single to be released before Kym Marsh quit. 'Hear'Say' the original talent show band thanks to Popstars. Listening to this it sounds a bit similar to Five's 'Keep On Movin'
2005- Babyshambles- Albion
'Albion' was the third single from Babyshambles' debut album 'Down in Albion'. This would go on and peak at #8 in the UK, can't say that I remember this song certainly one I haven't heard since this came out.
This Week:
2003- The Cheeky Girls- Have A Cheeky Christmas
I apologize it is a cheeseball we have The Cheeky Girls with 'Have A Cheeky Christmas'. This went on and peaked at #10 in the UK. In the music video I feel sorry for the reindeer in this as he doesn't look comfortable at all. This isn't a great Xmas song at all, I remember this was played on repeat at my house as my sister was a massive fan of the Cheeky Girls at the time. Their 3rd UK Top 10 hit to include 'Cheeky' which
2008- Kings of Leon- Use Somebody
'Use Somebody' was the second single from Kings of Leon's fourth studio album 'Only by the Night'. This went on to peak at #2 in the UK behind Leona's 'Run'. 'Use Somebody' is probably in my view the best song that Kings of Leon did and up there with one of my favourite songs of all time. I remember this being played as background music on a slideshow on my last day at high school.
2009- Peter Kay's Animated All Star Band- The Official BBC Children In Need Medley
This time, this may not be a popular choice but we have Peter Kay's 2009 Children In Need offering which featured characters from Fireman Sam, Thomas & The Tank Engine, Bob The Builder, Pingu, Rubbadubbers, Angelina Ballerina, Thunderbirds, Paddington, Bagpuss, Postman Pat, Rorary The Racing Car, Fifi and The Flowertots, The Koala Brothers, Little Robots, Muffin The Mule, The Woodentops, Bill & Ben, Andy Pandy, Pudsey, Teletubbies, In The Night Garden, The Wombles, Peppa Pig, Thunderbirds, Bagpuss, Engie Benjy, Ben 10, Scooby Doo, Sponge-Bob, Roobarb, Fluffy Gardens, Rainbow, The Sooty Show, Camberick Green and Trumpton. This somehow ended up getting to #1 in the UK,
The CIN Medley is a classic tho
This Week:
(Doing this two days early due to being busy on Thursday)
2002- Las Ketchup- The Ketchup Song (Asereje)
'The Ketchup Song' was the debut single from Spanish group Las Ketchup. This would somehow peak at #1 in the UK. I remember this being played at discos at primary school, it's probably one of those songs that would be at most weddings, parties. There was even a Christmas version of this:
2002- Liam Lynch- United States of Whatever
86 seconds was all that was needed for this from one-hit wonder Liam Lynch. This would peak at #10 in the UK at the time this would be the shortest single to enter the UK charts before being beaten in 2007 by 'Spider Pig' and 'The Ladies' Bras'. This is great fun from Liam Lynch.
2008- Duffy- Rain On Your Parade
'Rain On Your Parade' was the fifth single from Duffy's debut album 'Rockferry'. This would go on and peak at #15 in the UK. I very much preferred to this to her UK #1 that was 'Mercy'. This was to be her last UK Top 40 hit.
Ah Las Ketchup is a bop and 'United States of Whatever' is also a funny tune.
Shame Duffy fizzled out after that big first era. They really did balls up the follow up really. 'Rain On Your Parade' was another good single from her but I do prefer the other three singles before it imo!
Some interesting choices here.
"United States of Whatever" - one from the most strangest songs, which I heard. In Australia this single was peaked at # 6 and got Gold sertifiaction for sold 35.000 copies.
"Asereje" - Lithuanian girl group Mokinukes did a cover version of this hit on Lithuanian. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6V3TVm9pHxk
"Have A Cheeky Christmas" - didn't age well, but good enough for # 1 in my retrospective chart. It's their best song.
"The Official BBC Children In Need Medley" - cutest video and very rare situation, when I like various "artists" colloboration.
This Week:
2000- Madonna- Don't Tell Me
The first song in 2024 for this series is: Madonna with 'Don't Tell Me'. This was the second single from her eighth studio album 'Music'. This would go on and peak at #4 in the UK and in the US. Maybe a bit of an controversial opinion but I prefer this to her previous single 'Music'.
2000- Robbie Williams- Supreme
Which contained an melody of this:
'Supreme' was the third single to be released from Robbie Williams' third studio album 'Sing When You're Winning'. This would go on and peak at #4 in the UK. The music video is particularly one of my favourite music videos of the 2000s with Robbie's tribute to three-time F1 world champion Jackie Stewart. Where Robbie portrays a driver called Bob Williams where he completes for the F1 World Championship but he doesn't win the title due to getting locked in his caravan. I think that is portraying Brazilian two-time F1 world champion Emerson Fittipaldi possibly. This would contain an melody of Gloria Gaynor's 'I Will Survive'.
2005- Nizlopi- JCB Song
'Midlands Today' was the first time that I heard this from one-hit wonders Nizlopi with 'JCB Song'. This would go on and peak at #1 in the UK. it was cosnidered to be one of the favourites for the Christmas No.1 in 2005 but was beaten by the beginning of the X Factor juggernaut this time from Shayne Ward with 'That's My Goal'. I can remember people that my high school were obsessed with the song and me getting a pasting just because I didn't like this song. Its one that you would hear on Christmas No.2 playlists or one-hit wonders.
Really like both 'Don't Tell Me' & 'Surpeme' from this weeks. 'JCB Song' is alright but a bit lame for me too x
This Week:
2002- Ronan Keating ft Lulu- We've Got Tonight
'We've Got Tonight' was the third single from Ronan Keating's second studio album 'Destination' and featured on Lulu's twelfth studio album 'Together'. This would go on and peak at #4 in the UK. It is the highest charting version of this song. It isn't one that I wouldn't go back and listen to again as I'm not a fan of Lulu. The original version was Bob Seger, and in 1983 Kenny Rogers would cover this with Sheena Easton
Original:
Kenny Rogers & Sheena Easton Version:
2008- The Script- Breakeven
'Breakeven' was the third single from The Script's self-titled debut album. This would go on and peak at #21 in the UK, in the US this would outpeak its position in the UK by peaking at #12 in the Billboard Hot 100 albeit in May 2010. I quite liked this from The Script, I was quite gutted at the time that this didn't peak higher. At least James Arthur has left this alone after he plagizsed 'The Man Who Can't Be Moved'.
2009- Miley Cyrus- Party In The U.S.A.
'Party In The U.S.A.' was the lead single from Miley Cyrus' EP 'The Time of Our Lives'. This would go on and peak at #11 in the UK which at the time was her highest charting single tied with 'See You Again' and 'The Climb'. In the US this would fare better by peaking at #2 in the Billboard Hot 100. This was one that did get skipped or switched off when this used to come on, now I would listen to it for nostaglia.
'Break Even' should've swapped with 'The Man Who Can't Be Moved' for me. Shame it never did get a lift into the top 20 at the very least still had a decent run though.
Never liked 'Party In The USA' oops and I liked pretty much all of what I heard from Miley up to that point as well!
For German speaking countries Ronan recorded a special version of "We've Got Tonight" together with Jeanette Biedermann instead Lulu.
This Week:
2001- Sophie Ellis-Bextor- Murder On The Dancefloor
Be warned:
2003- Shane Richie- I'm Your Man
Which was performed on Children In Need:
Which was a cover of this:
2006- Sharam- PATT (Party All The Time)
Which was a remix of this original:
This Week: (Doing this 2 days earlier as busy on Thursday)
2002- One True Voice- Sacred Trust/After You're Gone
Popstars: The Rivals was the show that would produce two bands One True Voice and Girls Aloud (I wonder what happened to them). One True Voice would complete with Girls Aloud for the Christmas #1. They were beaten to the Christmas #1 spot by Girls Aloud with 'Sound Of The Underground'. This and 'Sound of The Underground' there wasn't much of a contest, it was definitely gonna be Girls Aloud. This was a cover of the Bee Gees version. This was the start of the beginning for One True Voice as they would release one further single 'Shakespeare's (Way With Words) which would peak at #10. In August they would split up. This wasn't a great song from One True Voice.
Bee Gees version:
2002- Cheeky Girls- Cheeky Song (Touch My Bum)
From One True Voice, an unlikely duo called The Cheeky Girls from Gabriela and Monica. This would go on somehow and peak at #2 in the UK for four non-consecutive weeks. This unfortunately was overplayed a lot at my house as my sister would keep playing the CD for this at least 20 times a day. Not one that I would go out of my way to listen to. This would later be voted the worst pop record in the 100 Worst Records which was complied by Channel 4 in January 2004. This however would probably be played at most weddings, discos, christenings.
That audition:
2005- Shayne Ward- That's My Goal
The song that would start the X Factor hold on the Christmas #1 for the next four years it is the winner's single from Shayne Ward with 'That's My Goal'. This of course would go on and get the 2005 Christmas #1. This was later included on his debut self-titled album. This would be the last original X Factor winners' song til Matt Terry's 'When Christmas Comes Around'. This is often played on those best selling singles of the 2000s countdown on music channels.
This Week:
2001- S Club 7- Have You Ever
2001- Stereophonics- Handbags And Gladrags
'Have You Ever' is cute. 'Handbags and Gladrags' is nice as well and I didn't originally think it was a cover either. 'Pencil Full of Lead' is quirky fun too!
This Week:
2001- Westlife- Queen of My Heart
The first song for this week, I apologize it isn't an popular choice or from an popular band, it is Westlife is the first time they have been included in this series with 'Queen of My Heart'. This was the first single from their third studio album 'World of Our Own'. This would become their 9th UK #1 in two and a half years. This isn't great from them. At the time they were the 'Manchester City' of the UK Charts, where everything they released seemed to go to #1.
2004- Band Aid 20- Do They Know It's Christmas?
I apologize for the timing of this song. A third version of the 1984 hit of 'Do They Know It's Christmas?' This of course would go straight to #1 in the UK and become the Christmas No 1, it would stay at #1 for four weeks.
The line-up was:
This Week:
2000- Public Domain- Operation Blade (Bass In The Place)
2004- Green Day- Boulevard of Broken Dreams
2006- The Feeling- Love It When You Call
This week we have a Top 5 hit from Public Domain, the second signature song from 'American Idiot' from Green Day and a #18 hit from The Feeling.
'Boulevard Of Broken Dreams' one of Greendays very best and 'I Love It When You Call' is fun as well. Was impressive for them to get all of their singles in the top 40 too, even the forgotten 'Rosé'!
Operation Blade was a real stomper! Reminds me of some great hardstyle songs of the time like Warp Brothers and Porn Kings.
All 3 good choices there. Agree Operation Blade is a bit of a banger. I remember Ronan Keating ranting on radio about how awful and noisy it was and then it blocked him from the Top 5.
Thanks all for commenting it is very much appreciated,
This Week:
2003- Sugababes- Too Lost In You
'Too Lost In You' was the second single from Sugababes' third studio album 'Three'. This would feature in the soundtrack in 'Love Actually'. This would go on and peak at #10 in the UK where it would stay for two weeks, this really should have charted higher as I think it is one of the best songs that the Sugababes did.
Love Actually Scene:
2004- Girls Aloud- I'll Stand By You
From the naff Shane Richie 'I'm Your Man' version for the 2003 Children In Need single. In 2004 we had another cover this time from Girls Aloud with a cover of the 1994 Pretenders song 'I'll Stand By You'. This would go on and peak at #1 in the UK becoming their second UK #1. This in my view was one of the better Children In Need singles, it feels poignant after the passing of Sarah Harding in 2021.
Original Version:
2007- Girls Aloud- Call The Shots
A double helping of Girls Aloud this week as we have 'Call The Shots' which was the second single from their fourth studio album 'Tangled Up'. This would go on and peak at #3 in the UK where it would stay for two weeks behind the juggernaut that was 'Bleeding Love' by Leona Lewis. This would be their 16th consecutive single to chart in the UK Top 10, that's insane, I'm not sure if that would happen now. This is probably one of the best songs in my view that Girls Aloud did.
Ooh I love 2/3 - Too Lost In You and Call The Shots are both brilliant and right up with both acts’ very finest. The Pretenders cover is not so great.
Just catching up with this thread - loving it so far Mack. Glad Who Am I got some recognition and love. Definitely my favourite Will single along with Jealousy.
Also not a fan of the 'I'll Stand By You' cover but 'Call The Shots' is fab and one of their best for me.
Call The Shots is easily in my Top 3 of theirs!
This Week:
2000- Robbie Williams & Kylie Minogue- Kids
The first song for this week is an heavyweight collaboration between Robbie Williams and Kylie Minogue with 'Kids'. This would go on and peak at #2 in the UK. This was the second single from Robbie's third studio album 'Sing When You're Winning' and the third single from Kylie's seventh studio album 'Light Years'. Not one I've listened to in a while. Although not sure about the rap verse from Robbie at the end.
2009- Pixie Lott- Cry Me Out
'Cry Me Out' was the third single from Pixie Lott's debut studio album 'Turn It Up'. This would peak at #12 in the UK, an controversial view but I very much prefer this to her first singles which went to #1 which would have turned off immediately whenever 'Mama Do (Uh Oh, Uh Oh) or 'Boys and Girls' came on.
2009- Lady Antebellim- Need You Now
'Need You Now' was the debut single in the UK from Lady A (known at the time as Lady Antebellum' from their second studio album of the same name. In the US this was released in 2009 where it would peak at #2 in the Billboard Hot 100. In the UK this would be released the following year where it would originally peak at #21 in the UK. Two years later it would reach a new peak of #15 thanks to a performance from Gary Barlow and Cheryl Tweedy at the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Concert where it would re-enter the chart at #23, a month later it would reach a peak of #15.
Gary and Cheryl's Performance:
Not a big fan of Kids but I know others like it.
Cry Me Out is beautiful and a unique pop record . I love the dance-like rhythm.
Need You Now is gorgeous too - remains one of my favourite country songs.
'Kids' is fun but obviously far away from the best from either of them.
'Cry Me Out' I'd like to think despite the bad rep Pixie gets from others that this one is let off as it's a nicely done ballad and deserved to be a top 10 hit in the charts.
'I Need You Now' is fab too. Great country track and they have a few others I liked too but haven't heard anything of theirs for years now!
This Week: (Doing this 2 days earlier as busy on Thursday)
2001- A1- No More
'No More' was the third single from A1's second studio album 'The A List'. This would go on and peak at #6 in the UK becoming their 7th straight UK Top 10 single. Don't remember this from A1 hearing it, it feels very similar to the sounds that the Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC were doing. Probably just me that might think that.
2003- Sinead Quinn- I Can't Break Down
'I Can't Break Down' was the debut single from Sinead Quinn from her debut album 'Ready To Run'. This would go on and peak at #2 in the UK, Sinead Quinn was the runner-up in the first series of BBC's 'Fame Academy'. Her album however would chart at #48 in the UK Albums Chart. She would later follow-up from 'I Can't Break Down' to 'What You Need Is... which would peak at #19 in the UK. Unfortunately I don't remember this song from Sinead Quinn .
2006- Meck ft Leo Sayer- Thunder In My Heart Again
'Thunder In My Heart Again' was the first single from British DJ Meck which would feature Leo Sayer, it would sample Leo Sayer's 1978 single 'Thunder In My Heart' which originally would peak at #22 in the UK. This remix would outpeak its original position by peaking at #1 in the UK becoming Meck's first and only UK #1 and Leo Sayer's second UK #1. This was an all right song from Meck and Leo Sayer. The following year Leo Sayer will appear on the controversial Celebrity Big Brother 5 where he would create one of the most notorious walk-outs..

2002- Rik Waller- I Will Always Love You
I apologize but the first song for this week isn't an popular choice but it is a cover of Dolly Parton's 'I Will Always Love You' from Pop Idol's Rik Waller who somehow managed to get this version to chart at #6 in the UK. This version isn't great from him.
Original:
Whitney's
2004- Jamie Cullum- These Are The Days
'These Are The Days' was the second single from Jamie Cullum's third studio album 'Twentysomething'. This would go on and peak at #12 in the UK, can't say that I remember this from him, This would be his highest-ever charting single. It's probably one of those songs that you would hear in the background if you were at a coffee shop.
2005- McFly- All About You
'All About You' was the official Comic Relief song from 2005 which was done by McFly. This would go on and become their 3rd UK #1, however the following week they would be knocked off the #1 spot by the unofficial Comic Relief juggernaut that was Tony Christie, mimed by Peter Kay in 'Is This The Way to Amarillo'. In the music video this would feature an number of celebrities and 'celebrities' which were:
I had blocked Rik Waller from my memory. Thanks for that
'All About You' is one of McFly's best if not best.
Dolly's original is the only acceptable version of 'I Will Always Love You' for me.
I read up about what happened to Rik years on with his music career ending due to a case of laryngitis.
This Week:
2002- Will Young- Evergreen
'Evergreen' was the winners single for Pop Idol winner Will Young. This would go straight to #1 in the UK where it would stay for 3 weeks before being knocked off by one Gareth Gates cover. This went on to be the best-selling song of that year and was also the fastest-selling debut in UK chart history. 'Evergreen' was originally a Westlife song which appeared on their album 'World of Our Own'. 'Evergreen' was included on the first single that I brought which was Gareth Gates 'Unchained Melody'
2003- Shania Twain- Ka-Ching
'Ka-Ching' was the second single from Shania Twain's fourth studio album 'Up'. This would go on and peak at #8 in the UK. This song I do remember from in 2015 where bit of a random story but the carpool driver who took me to the Cheltenham races for the 4 days would have Shania Twain's greatest hits album on repeat. This is a good song from Shania, its definitely one that I would listen to.
2007- Cascada- Miracle
'Miracle' was the third UK single from Cascada's debut album 'Everytime We Touch'. This would go on and peak at #8 in the UK. Their previous single 'Truly Madly Deeply', I can remember people in my year were obsessed with that song. This is OK from Cascada, its not a dance classic but it would probably be on the playlist when going out.
Thought I hadn't heard 'Ka-Ching' before but giving it a listen does sound like one I have heard and it's a pretty good track from her again. The follow up to 'Gonna Getcha Good' I think?
'Evergreen' is a decent talent show offering but my top fave here is the banger 'Miracle' should have been the 2nd single following EWT for me!
This Week: (Doing this a day earlier as busy on Thursday
2000- Chicane ft Bryan Adams- Don't Give Up
The first song for this week is from: Chicane featuring Bryan Adams with 'Don't Give Up' which was the second single from Chicane's second studio album 'Behind the Sun'. This would go on and become Chicane's first and only UK #1 and Bryan Adams' second UK #1, it would stay at #1 for a week. I find this to be an motivation song for me. I would definitely listen to this rather than Bryan Adam's other #1.
2003- Simply Red- Sunrise
'Sunrise' was the first single from Simply Red's eighth studio album 'Home'. This would go on and peak at #7 in the UK, this would sample Hall & Oates 1981 hit 'I Can't Go for That (No Can Do), This is all right from Simply Red, probably one of about half of dozen songs that I would listen to from Simply Red.
Sampled:
2003- Busted- Year 3000
'Year 3000' was the second single from Busted's self-titled debut album. This would go on and peak at #2 in the UK, I would tell Busted to leave my great-great-great granddaughter alone if it were me. I can remember that this was very popular in my primary school, everyone talked about Busted that was until the following year when a certain McFly came along....
Year 3000 is a classic. So many memories attached to that song.
First time hearing the Chicane/Bryan collab. I quite like it but not my favourite from Bryan.
This Week:
2005- McFly- You've Got A Friend
'You've Got A Friend' was the official Comic Relief song from 2005 which was done by McFly. This would go on and become their 3rd UK #1, however the following week they would be knocked off the #1 spot by the unofficial Comic Relief juggernaut that was Tony Christie, mimed by Peter Kay in 'Is This The Way to Amarillo'. This was part of the double A-side single along with 'All About You'. This was the lead single from McFly's second studio album 'Wonderland'. This was an cover from Carole King's 1971 single. It would be James Taylor's version that was released first in 1971 where that would peak at #4 in the UK, in 1997 this was covered by The Brand New Heavies where their version would peak at #9 in the UK. McFly's version however would out peak the original version.
Original Version:
James Taylor's Version:
The Brand New Heavies Version:
2008- Panic At The Disco- Nine In The Afternoon
'Nine in the Afternoon' was the lead single from Panic At The Disco's second studio album 'Pretty.Odd'. This would go on and peak at #13 in the UK where it was the band's highest charting single at the time. In the US this would peak at #51 in the Billboard Hot 100. I vaguely remember this from 2008, it probably wasn't one that I would listen to on repeat. Not one though I have heard for a long time.
2009- Vanessa Jenkins, Bryn West ft Tom Jones & Robin Gibb- (Barry) Islands In the Stream
Be warned, this may not be a popular choice, but it was another Comic Relief song this time from Vanessa Jenkins aka Ruth Jones and Uncle Bryn West aka Rob Brydon, this would feature Sir Tom Jones with Robin Gibb as a backing vocalist. This would go on and reach #1 in the UK, it would only stay in the UK Top 40 for three weeks with a run of 1-3-23. It was thanks to the popularity of Gavin & Stacey at the time this went to #1. This version isn't anyone near a patch on the original from Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton. I remember that my sister would play the Comic Relief version on repeat and I was put out that this knocked off Flo Rida/Kesha from the #1 spot. Uncle Bryn and Nessa still have more #1s than One True Voice.
Original Version:
This Week: (Doing this three days early as busy on Thursday)
2000- Geri Halliwell- Bag It Up
2002- Gareth Gates- Unchained Melody
2004- Michelle- The Meaning of Love
Never heard that Michelle McManus song before alright I guess.
'Nine In The Afternoon' is still a pretty good song from Panic. Think it'd be my fave still tbh as although I like 'High Hopes' I've never really loved it or anything.
'Bag It Up' is totally naff but in a fun way for me #sorrynotsorry.
I discovered that Robbie x Kylie collab through the #2 listenthrough and I think it's pretty decent!
Miracle is better than EWT imo, at least in its original form.
This Week:
2004- McFly- 5 Colours In Her Hair

This would go on and peak at #14 in the UK, it would be the first single from him that would miss out on the Top 10, the following week it would drop out of the Top 40. Does this sample Radiohead's 'No Surprises'?
This Week:
2000- Bloodhound Gang- The Bad Touch
Explicit Version:
'The Bad Touch' was the debut UK single from American alternative rock band Bloodhound Gang taken from their third studio album 'Hooray for Boobies'. This would originally enter the UK at #5, four weeks later it would reach a new peak of #4, quite rare in 2000 that a song would climb to its original peak. I did wonder why when I was at school that I got sent out for singing this although I was only 6.
Top of The Pops Performance:
2005- Freeloaders ft The Real Thing- So Much Love To Give
'So Much To Give' was from British house music duo Freeloaders which feature a sample of 'Love's Such a Wonderful Thing' by The Real Thing. This would go on and peak at #9 in the UK, this is a decent dance tune from Freeloaders.

Changes really killed any chance of another successful era for Gareth!
Didn't it just lol. Can't say I'm overly mad on any of those this week.
Forgot to include this for the 25th April edition:
2009- La Roux- In For The Kill
'In For The Kill' was the second single from La Roux's self-titled debut album. This would go on and peak at #2 in the UK, this would come 21st in my Top 100 of the 00s, this is what I said about 'In For The Kill'
I’ve grown to like In For the Shrill over the years
This Week:
2002- Idlewild- You Held The World In Your Arms
'You Held The World In Your Arms' was the first single from Idlewild's third studio album 'The Remote Part'. This would go on and peak at #9 in the UK. I remember this song particularly for it being in the soundtrack of FIFA 2003.
FIFA:
2003- David Sneddon- Don't Let Go
'Don't Let Go' was the second single from Fame Academy winner David Sneddon's debut album 'Seven Years- Ten Weeks'. This would go on and peak at #3 in the UK. This is one that I haven't heard for a long time, at the time I can remember that I was a fan of this from him, I much preferred this to 'Stop Living the Lie'. Probably in the minority on here for liking this.
2003- Busted- You Said No
'You Said No' was the third single from Busted's self-titled debut album. This would go on and become Busted's first UK #1, what was unique was Busted became the first act to have their first three singles to enter the top three in ascending order. Again this was one that I can remember that most people in my class very much liked this song.
This Week:
2005- KT Tunstall- Other Side of The World
'Other Side of The World' was the second single from KT Tunstall's debut album 'Eye to the Telescope'. This would go on and peak at #13 in the UK, it would stay in the Top 40 for five weeks. I can remember being a bit gutted at the time that this didn't chart higher for her.
2005- The Killers- Smile Like You Mean It
'Smile Like You Mean It' was the fourth single from The Killers' debut album 'Hot Fuss'. This would go on and peak at #11 in the UK, this was one I definitely listened to when this came out.
2005- Kelly Osbourne- One Word
'One Word' was the first and only single from Kelly Osbourne's second studio album 'Sleeping In the Nothing'. This would go on and peak at #9 in the UK, I think this sounded very similar to 'Fade To Grey' by Visage. One that I haven't heard for a while.
