Chart Commentary



Staying stable for a second week, Matteo Markus Bok's In the Middle is miles ahead of the rest of the pack this week. After topping the chart last week despite only being available on Spotify, its iTunes release came on Tuesday meaning this old-fashioned iTunes user can now listen much more accessibly. In addition, the music video was released the same day, contributing to its boost. As a result, In the Middle joins an exclusive club of multi-week chart toppers from this year:

Notably, Froy's sideswipe spent 5 non-consecutive weeks at the top, with two 2-week stints and one 1-week stint.

There's a switcharoo in this week's top 10 for Alec Benjamin, as Outrunning Karma fades 9-12, being replaced by his newest single 1994. The American singer/songwriter has been releasing roughly a song a month since May to varying success levels in my chart - Let Me Down Slowly kicked things off with his first #1 single, while If We Have Each Other and Outrunning Karma were top 10 hits (singles #3 and #5, peaking at #8 and #5 respectively). Meanwhile, single #2 The Boy in the Bubble didn't chart and single #4 Death of a Hero only made #38. 1994 breaks the pattern of smash-flop-smash-flop-smash, and becomes his second highest charting track to date, debuting at #3 this week. His "first full body of work", Narrated For You, is out on Friday and is expected to include all six singles so expect some impact from that!

Dropping her new single out of nowhere overnight on Saturday (or Sunday morning for the UK), Ariana Grande storms to a #4 debut, her second highest position this year. thank u, next is the title track from her forthcoming fifth studio album, set to be released just months after Sweetener came out. Making her comeback this week, Carly Rae Jepsen kickstarts her fourth album campaign with Party For One. Continuing a mammoth run of hit singles, Clean Bandit score a seventh top 10 hit in a row with Baby (only promotional track Disconnect disrupts the run). It's the sixth single from their second studio album What Is Love? and so far, the lowest charting. That said, it's the highest charting song for featured vocalist Marina [and the Diamonds], and her second top 10 hit - first since 2012's Primadonna. Luis Fonsi also achieves his second top 10, roughly a year after Échame La Culpa made #7.

It's started - Christmas has begun earlier than usual this year for me and as a result, Mariah Carey's seasonal classic makes its earliest yearly chart appearance yet at #31. All I Want For Christmas Is You has peaked at #3 for four weeks so far, spread across 2016 and 2017, and usually leads the pack for Christmas re-entries. However, Matteo Markus Bok's This Christmas starts ahead this year, currently at #18 (undoubtedly bolstered by the fact his track In the Middle is this week's #1). Nevertheless, expect another big year for Mariah!

Elsewhere in the singles chart, Johnny Orlando, Billie Eilish, JOWST and Maria Celin make their chart debuts.
