One of the albums of the year for me.
This is the sort of album I’ve always wanted from him, I knew he had in him 🙌🏼

Agreed. The production is especially great.

The bass on I THINK

Really loving it thus far. Nice and concise with plenty of replayable tracks. The whole thing kind of reminds me of the fuzzy, distorted coda from Kanye's "Runaway", but it feels like a natural progression from his last album. I think I heard it could become the first entirely self-produced solo album to reach #1 in the US ohmy.gif

I'm gonna try and listen to the rest of this album some time soon but I've at least checked out 'EARFQUAKE' for now - Tyler really cannot sing at all but he somehow makes it work anyway?? It is reminding me a little bit of Kanye's 'Runaway' which is a very good thing. Also loved Playboi Carti's part.

The music video is hilarious as well.

Loving seeing Tyler getting so much success (and with seemingly such a bold and experimental album this time).

good review in Pitchfork
https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/tyler-the-creator-igor/
but was hoping for more than an 8

Posted by: Dircadirca 25th May 2019, 04:21 PM

I feel like Pitchfork have been really conservative with high ratings lately, kind of like they're afraid to commit to definitive high scores to albums so soon after they're release (in case I dunno, the album doesn't stand the test of time), but they can't delay the reviews because then they'll get less clicks. It felt a bit off when they only gave To Pimp A Butterfly a 9.3 in 2015, and then they spent the rest of the year seemingly realising they messed up, and proceeding to give Tame Impala, Sufjan Stevens & Jamie xx all that exact same score. Any higher and it's making a statement that they wouldn't be willing to back up. It's such a far cry from when they gave My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy a 10.0 the day after it came out. So it's all a matter of whether or not they'll correct themselves come end of year(/decade!) with IGOR.

("Carrie and Lowell" is better than "To Pimp A Butterfly" wink.gif)

Posted by: Dircadirca 26th May 2019, 04:48 AM

haha, I adore them both, but P4K put one at #1 and the other at #6 in their End Of Year list so it's clear where their allegiance was tongue.gif

'I Think' gives me "Graduation" type vibes. I thought of "Stronger" while I was listening to this.

Got around to hearing this now and I absolutely love this album, maybe even overtaking 'Assume Form' for my favourite album of the year wub.gif The first 8 songs (ignoring the interlude x) are fantastic in particular and the production is on point on every single track. Definitely hearing a lot of Kanye influence throughout, especially on 'A BOY IS A GUN*' which is basically 'Bound 2' part 2 (even uses the same sample).

'A BOY IS A GUN', yes really like this also from the album. I wonder what Kanye would think of it.

This is still on repeat for me, album of the year so far by some distance

He won the Best Rap Album at the Grammys. A joke that that was his only nomination but at least they didn't snub him on that one ~

He then proceeded to call out the Grammys' lowkey racist genre classifications in an interview after the ceremony, specifically calling out the word 'urban' as a 'politically correct way of saying the N word'. I'm forced to stan.

I completely missed this happening but I've just listened to the snippets on iTunes and it sounds excellent ohmy.gif

Such a deserved win, should’ve been up for album of the year too.

One of my favourites of the last five years, I feel like it’s the true successor to My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy in terms of scale, production, impeccable guest features.

His performance last night was incredible too, he’s at the top of his game right now.

This is absolutely amazing. It's exactly what I want from a hip hop album, so inventive in its production and the lyrics are more relatable to me than hip hop albums often are. It's like a perfect hybrid of Kanye and Outkast.

I can't believe I've been missing out!!!

Ha! Did I get it wrong? I have no idea what to do in this forum!

I'm glad you have joined the IGOR appreciation — it really is a fantastic album, and one of the best of 2019.

Someone explain to me where I went wrong... I feel like I’m is conspicuous 50 year old woman in animal print lycra at an 18-30s bar.

!!!

(read Bra's post above - I was just pointing out that he doesn't like to be categorised as a rap artist himself)

I think in fairness, 'hip-hop' is not as egregious of a label as that covers a far wider palette of sounds & production styles. Tyler won his Grammy for 'Best Rap Album' which is more a misnomer since 'rap' specifically refers to the performance technique, and if you listen to "IGOR", he's singing far more than he's rapping. You could of course make the argument that "IGOR"'s production probably could fit under pop, since it's clear the Grammys take much more liberty when it's for artists they've decided are pop ("thank u, next" being a pop vocal album and "Starboy" being u***n contemporary makes little sense except that one of the artists is white and the other is not). Genres should just be thrown in the toilet though really.

A track that was previously only available on the physical version of the album has been uploaded to YouTube. It's called BOYFRIEND and features Charlie Wilson & Santigold. It's a good tune but not one I would rank near the top of the album.
