ZAYN
Vibez

2nd single from Nobody Is Listening
Released: 8th January 2021
Label: RCA Records

Video

Biography

When Zayn Malik left One Direction in early 2015, he didn’t really have a plan. They were in Hong Kong, on tour. Two weeks down, seven months to go. Zayn was already beat. So he hopped on a plane and flew home. Dad was skeptical. Mom made him some food. After all, he was still basically a kid: 22 years old, with the past five years of his life swallowed up by the madness of being in the biggest boy band on the planet. He’d joked that he’d only gone through with The X Factor in the first place because it beat taking exams. And while 1D were close pals, Zayn still felt like the creative odd man out, a lifelong hip-hop and R&B fan trying to find his voice in the group’s bright, pop-rock matrix. “There wasn’t any time to sit down and process anything and be like, ‘Is this what I really want to do?’” he told Apple Music after going solo in 2016. “That was the real underlying issue. That’s what it was for me. I just needed time to breathe.”

A gamble, for sure. But gambles always seemed like Zayn’s forte. It wasn’t just that he upended the boy-band code by refusing to dance, but he also breathed a little real-life spontaneity into a world whose moves often seem choreographed to death. The music has taken chances, too: the woozy, alt-leaning R&B of tracks like “iT’s YoU”, the club sounds of “No Candle No Light”, the decidedly adult themes of “sHe” and “PILLOWTALK”. Some teen stars never outgrow the past. With Zayn, you sense that the future has been on his mind for a while—it just took him a minute to get around to it.

Zara Larsson featuring Young Thug
Talk About Love

4th single from Poster Girl
Released: 8th January 2021
Label: Record Company TEN

Video

Biography

“I try not to overthink songs,” Zara Larsson told Apple Music in 2019. Instead, the Swedish singer feels most on point when she’s able to “just feel it.” Larsson’s ability to convey that mix of youthful confidence and emotional intensity helped make her one of Europe’s biggest new music stars while she was still in her teens. Born in 1997 in a suburb of Stockholm, Larsson first found fame in Sweden when her performance of Céline Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” clinched her victory on a TV talent show at the age of 10. After leaving school to focus on her music full time, she released her debut album, 1, in 2014, which topped the charts throughout Scandinavia and landed her a U.S. record deal. By the time she was scoring international hits alongside rapper Tinie Tempah on “Girls Like” and guesting on David Guetta’s “This One’s for You”, she was fast developing beyond the familiar dance-pop templates and demonstrating a boldness that evoked Beyoncé and Rihanna, two of her biggest influences. (She paid tribute to another inspiration a few years later when she released a sumptuous cover of Robyn’s “With Every Heartbeat”.) “Never Forget You”, a thrilling collaboration with singer and producer MNEK that also marked Larsson’s first songwriting effort, became her first major U.S. success. Together with the album So Good, the song established the power and allure of Larsson’s sleek yet impassioned brand of EDM-powered pop. - Apple Music

Biography

When his life was cut short in the early hours of February 19, 2020, Brooklyn rapper Pop Smoke was, at the age of 20, more famous than he’d ever been, yet nowhere close to where he was likely to end up. He exploded onto the scene in 2019 with “Welcome to the Party,” a song that somehow plays as enticing as it is menacing, exemplifying Brooklyn’s rising drill music scene at its sharpest. His voice across it—gruff and road-worn beyond his age—carries the delivery of a supervillain, daring his adversaries to try and stop the mayhem he has planned for the city.

Pop Smoke was from the far-flung Canarsie neighborhood, and his verses radiate a singular kind of Real Brooklyn energy. (A great deal of his "Welcome to the Party” video takes place in front of the long-standing jerk chicken staple Peppa’s.) His slang (“sturdy,” “dap me up”) was largely New York City-centric, which helped songs like “War,” “Christopher Walking,” and “Dior” reverberate quickly through, and beyond, the five boroughs. Fans worldwide got indoctrinated upon accepting his 2019 debut project’s invitation to Meet the Woo; a sequel, Meet the Woo 2, was released just weeks before his death. Pop Smoke worked well with the stars of his city, nabbing collaborations with Nicki Minaj, Bronx heartthrob A Boogie wit da Hoodie, and fellow ascending voices Lil Tjay and Fivio Foreign. He’d even have no problem setting his own tone on his Travis Scott collaboration “GATTI,” from the JACKBOYS project. Canarsie had Pop Smoke famously calling friends and associates his “woos,” but his enemies mostly went nameless, barely worth mentioning. As fast as things were moving for him, he couldn’t have had a second of spare time to give to anyone who didn’t believe.

This feels absolutely ancient despite not charting until October last year.

And I only found out recently it's a sample.

I had no idea Olivia’s song was so popular over here.

I’m hoping for a Little Mix second week or Ed Sheeran #1 but Olivia’s song isn’t too bad, it just doesn’t scream number one to me

Biography

Justin Bieber
There’s a moment in a 2020 interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe where Justin Bieber begins—quietly, hesitantly—to cry. “It was hard for me being that young and being in the industry, and not knowing where to turn, and everyone telling me they love me, and just turning their back on you in a second,” Bieber says, each clause kicking up memories like dust. The point isn’t to weep with or for him—he had more dreams come true in his first 25 years than most people manage in a lifetime. But he’s also one of the few pop stars of his generation to have truly grown up in public, weathering the cable newsification of celebrity culture in the internet era while still trying to develop as both an artist and a person. Even early on, you could tell he had his eye on the future, balancing a doe-eyed wholesomeness with earnest attempts at hip-hop and R&B, material that suited him as a kid with material that reflected his growth into adolescence and adulthood. Some teen-pop singers end up trapped in amber; Justin Bieber has, knocks and all, kept swimming.

Born in London, Ontario, in 1994, Bieber was famously discovered when his future manager, Scooter Braun, stumbled on some performance videos that Bieber’s mom had uploaded to YouTube to share with family and friends. Braun, who understood not only Bieber’s appeal but the potential of the internet, encouraged him to keep making videos and keep the equipment cheap—an approach that not only helped Bieber’s growing fanbase to understand that he was still just a kid like them, but drafted a new blueprint for how artists could reach audiences in the digital era. With the exception of a voice change around 2011, 2009’s My World, 2010's My World 2.0 and 2012's Believe are more or less of a piece: the sound of a boy trying to stick the landing into puberty. Released in 2015, Purpose showed Bieber developing a more thoughtful connection to his material, including collaborations with vanguard pop producers like Diplo, Skrillex and benny blanco. After a five-year break during which Bieber underwent significant personal changes—including a detox from touring life, a diagnosis of Lyme disease and a epiphanic marriage to Hailey Baldwin—he came back with 2020’s Changes. “People have been putting me on a pedestal,” Bieber told Apple Music. ""I didn’t ask for that. Obviously I love making music, but there are a lot of people that love making music and they’re not in the position that I’m in. I’m just trying to steward that wisely, steward my relationship wisely. I want people to take a look at my story—hopefully, my words can make a difference.”

Before Benny Blanco was a name people put their chips on, the man born Benjamin Levin (in Reston, Virginia, in 1988) used to pretend to be JAY-Z’s lawyer to get label execs on the phone. It didn’t work, but it was a sign nevertheless: Here was someone with the hustle and ingenuity to make things happen. Raised in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., Blanco started making hip-hop beats as a teenager, messaging artists on MySpace from his school library and sleeping in McDonald’s while trying to land meetings on weekend trips to New York. His work—in particular a hyperbolically sleazy collaboration with party rapper Spank Rock called Bangers & Cash—caught the ear of industry powerhouses including songwriter-producer Dr. Luke (Katy Perry, Kesha, Britney Spears), who enlisted Blanco as an apprentice.

From there, he became one of the most bulletproof forces in modern pop, writing for and producing artists from Ed Sheeran (“Don’t”) to Kanye West, Ty Dolla $ign to Sia, The Weeknd to Maroon 5 (“Moves Like Jagger,” “Payphone”)—resulting in a résumé that effortlessly yoked together the vanguards of mainstream pop, hip-hop, and R&B. In 2018, Blanco stepped out as an artist in his own right, releasing his guest-heavy debut LP, FRIENDS KEEP SECRETS—an ongoing release that he plans to continue to add songs to over time, and a rare, progressive turn for someone so well established behind the scenes. “I’ve been doing this for 12 years,” he told Apple Music. “After that long, it’s good to switch it up.”

Biography

In an Apple Music interview from mid-2020, The Kid LAROI reminisced about the short but formative time he spent in LA living with the late emo rapper Juice WRLD. They’d hang out all day, bonding, making music, seeing friends, whatever. People always coming and going, never a dull moment. Sometimes, Juice would wake LAROI up in the middle of the night, wild with excitement about a track LAROI had to put a verse on. Other mornings, LAROI would wake up to his and Juice’s managers saying it was time to pack up and head to Texas. Like, now. He was 15, 16 years old. “I’d never experienced anything like that,” he said. “Especially coming from Australia, where everything is kind of like its own bubble.”

Not that 15-year-olds outside Australia would be used to it either. But such is the meteoric ascent of a talented young rapper circa 2020. Born Charlton Howard in 2003, LAROI—whose name is a reference to the Kamilaroi Indigenous nation, in which he has family roots—grew up in the suburbs of Sydney, and began to work on music when he was a pre-teen. Like Juice WRLD, Post Malone or even Lil Peep, LAROI’s key tracks—“ALWAYS DO”, “TRAGIC” and the Juice WRLD collaboration “GO”—blend ultra-melodic trap with shades of alternative rock and classic pop, a fusion that has put him on the front burner of pop-rap. His first album, F*CK LOVE, hit the Top 10 before he turned 18.
