Chart Commentary

We're a day early this week - I always type my charts up on Friday night anyway but instead of posting on Saturday, I'm doing it tonight instead as I'll be going on holiday tomorrow! I'll be on Buzzjack just like normal but I very much doubt I'll have any sort of energy to format the chart tomorrow.



American actor Froy Gutierrez is best known for his role on Teen Wolf as Nolan Holloway last year, inheriting the show's big and loyal online following. Now, alongside his acting, Froy has launched into music for the first time. His debut EP Midnight Minute has been teased for over a year, and recently, Froy confirmed that his music is finally on the horizon and Midnight Minute had been scrapped. The new EP was called sideswipe, and its title track came out a week ago today (27th July) after being teased at Teen Wolf conventions that Froy attended as a special guest. sideswipe instantly launches at #1, easy clearing the field to give Froy his first ever chart-topper. Expect big things when further tracks and the full EP drop, Froy is ready to take over.

Also making their chart debuts this week (and not mentioned lower down) are British boyband Roadtrip with their single No No No. I first heard this song four years ago, when Overload (later Overload Generation) sang it at their arena audition on The X Factor 2014 as an original track. Although Overload disbanded, one of the members found his way into Roadtrip and the new band inherited the song. I heard it performed by Roadtrip when seeing HRVY live on Thursday 26th July - more on that later.



Swedish popstar Benjamin Ingrosso made his chart debut just over two years ago, when Love You Again debuted at #37. It rose to #24 the next week, joined by Crystal Clear at #29 and Fall In Love, his first chart-topper. It remains his only chart-topper still, but every single since has reached the top 10. I Wouldn't Know continues that streak, becoming his sixth top 10 in a row, and second #2 hit after last single Dance You Off, which Benjy took to represent Sweden in Eurovision.

British DJ Sigala has achieved two previous top 10s in my chart, the highest being 2016's Say You Do, which debuted and peaked at #9. Although it had more longevity, his second top 10, Lullaby with Paloma Faith, actually peaked one place lower at #10. Now he blazes past both, with instant grat track We Don't Care, taken from his debut album Brighter Days, debuting at #4. It's helped along by The Vamps, who score a 19th top 10 hit, and improve on their previous hit Just My Type, which became their first track to miss the top 5 (at #6).

Making his chart debut this week, Spanish singer Alvaro Soler enters at #7 with La Cintura, the first single from his second studio album Mar De Colores. It charts in its remix form, with added guest vocals from Flo Rida and TINI. It's TINI's second top 10 hit, following her guest spot on the "Latin Urban Mix" of MAX's Lights Down Low, which also hit #7. Meanwhile, it's a new personal best for Flo Rida, who makes his first appearance in my top 10 since my very first chart at the end of 2011. He charted at #8 that week with Cody Simpson on iYiYi (a song that was over a year old by that point, and a trend that seems to follow in Flo Rida features - his Saturdays and J-Lo collaborations both charted over a year after their original release), and hasn't reached the top 10 since.

Norwegian DJ Alan Walker is best known for his breakthrough hit Faded, a global smash hit which reached #20 in my chart. However, his biggest hit here is All Falls Down from the tail end of 2017, which charted at #5 with some help from Noah Cyrus and Digital Farm Animals. He now registers a fourth chart hit, and another that outpeaks Faded - Darkside is new at #8. It features Au/Ra, who gets a second hit after Panic Room, which made #19 last week, as well as Tomine Harket who gets her first appearance in my top 40.

Completing the huge selection of six new entries in this week's top 10 is DJ Khaled, who scores a third top 10 hit, his first as a lead artist. He recruits Justin Bieber, Chance the Rapper and Quavo this time, hoping for "another one" following their huge hit I'm the One last year (minus Lil Wayne). I'm the One peaked at #11, one of the few songs to peak at that position in my chart's history, so new track No Brainer already outpeaks it. It's the second top 10 for both Chance (after Confident with Justin) and Quavo (after Savior with Iggy), while Justin scores a record-extending 27th top 10 hit, which includes eight #1s.

On Thursday 26th July, I went to see HRVY's Personal Tour at the O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire. It was a really fun night after a rough start (my friend dropped out and I dragged my sister instead ), and he performed all of his singles as well as some covers of recent hits, such as Jonas Blue's Mama and Shawn Mendes' In My Blood. As a result, his #1 hit Hasta Luego re-entered my chart at #39 this week, and despite the onslaught of new entries above it, it remains there this week. His two EPs also grace my album chart for the first time - Talk To Ya at #7 and Holiday at #10.

Nice to see the debuts for "We Don't Care", "La Cintura", "Darkside", "No Brainer" and "Don't Leave Me Alone", all of them are great songs!
Even though for "La Cintura", I prefer the solo version instead of the remix.

4. Sigala & The Vamps - We Don't Care | 4- it's his worst single yet for me oops I'm very excited for his album though
8. Alan Walker feat. Au/Ra & Tomine Harket - Darkside | 8- interesting to see this so high on your chart! I'm really liking this and it should be a big hit in my chart, good to have him back to making great songs as I lost some interest with his most recent output
9. DJ Khaled feat. Justin Bieber, Chance the Rapper & Quavo - No Brainer | 9- a bit of a step down from 'I'm the One' for me but it's a fun bop, good to hear something from Bieber this year too as well as Khaled's iconic shouting
12. David Guetta feat. Anne-Marie - Don't Leave Me Alone | 12- it's okay but David has done loads of better songs, it's an improvement for Anne-Marie from 2002 at least
21. Charli XCX - Girls Night Out | 21- not feeling this but I really like Focus!
