BuzzJack Music Forum _ Spice Girls _ Spotify: Most streamed Spice Girls songs

cheer.gif

Using Spotify data from the past year, let's see what are the most streamed Spice Girls songs! No prizes for guessing what their #1 is, but hopefully the rest of the count down will be interesting and not completely predictable!

I have combined all versions of each song to arrive at an ultimate total per track. So for example, the Wannabe total will include all the remixes and the demo. The group now has 51 unique tracks on Spotify.

To start off this thread I'll reveal the wooden spoon of the count down - the song in 51st place! That is...

----------

51st: Sisters (Are Doing It for Themselves) - Live from Wembley Stadium, UK / 1998

Originally by Eurythmics and Aretha Franklin, this live recording of the Mel B and Melanie C duet is included on the Goodbye CD2 single.

By the way, this thread won't be a post for each song even though I've started it off that way. Maybe I'll reveal them in groups of 5 or 10, I haven't decided yet. I won't drag this out too much!!

Ooh this sounds like a fun idea! Was CD2 the one that had the fanmade cover art? I owned both of them so this was on my iPod! I've apparently scrobbled it 17 times according to last.fm but not since 2010 (!) so just rectified that with a stream 13 years later laugh.gif

50th: Spice Invaders

The 'Spice Up Your Life' single B Side is surely the quirkiest track of their entire discography. It's spoken word, a stream of consciousness. It's full of valid information... information like "never wee with your knickers on". That pretty much sets the tone for the sheer randomness of this song! Hug that tree Geri! Do you love it or hate it? It wasn't selected for inclusion on the 'Spiceworld 25' track list, so its streams are unlikely to become any stronger any time soon.

2022 Streams: 18,001
Total Streams: 203,787

----------

49th: Baby Come Round

Another B Side, this time from 'Mama'/'Who Do You Think You Are'. Presumably this also suffers from a lack of exposure due to not being included on an album (it was snubbed from 'Spice 25'). It's predominantly a Melanie C vocals song, with occasional backing from Emma and a middle 8 rap from Mel B. All the girls contribute to the chorus.

2022 Streams: 23,890
Total Streams: 267,159

----------

48th: Spice Chat 2 "Shall We Say 'Goodbye' Then?'

This 48 second track was presumably recorded in 1996 and is another spoken word song, with the girls repeatedly bidding us goodbye! Who knows why it went unused back then, but after 25 years in the vaults it ended up being included as the final moment on the 'Spice 25' bonus disc. On the CD release it is only tagged as "Shall We Say Goodbye Then?", however on digital platforms the title leads with "Spice Chat 2". This suggests there could be other Spice Chats, which remain unreleased...

2022 Streams: 30,816
Total Streams: 57,062

----------

47th: We Are Family - Live from Wembley Stadium, UK / 1998

The Spice Girls clearly love this Sister Sledge classic, with it featuring in three of their tours! Their cover was the closing song for the 1998 tour set list, and it's the Wembley Stadium recording that features on the 'Goodbye' CD single. It was included in a medley performance in 2007/8, and performed in full once again in 2019.

2022 Streams: 31,880
Total Streams: 236,417

----------

46th: Spice Girls Party Mix

With a run time of just under 15 minutes, this megamix was specially commissioned for the 'Spiceworld 25' release last year. In my humble opinion it's a very lazy offering. It simply cuts and pastes portions of old remixes of Spice Up Your Life, Step to Me, Stop, Wannabe and Who Do You Think You Are, as well as throwing in the album version of Never Give Up on the Good Times for good measure. Somewhat bizarrely the remix of Step to Me hasn't been made available to buy or stream in its own right, while the remixes of Spice Up Your Life and Stop are included in full earlier on in the 'Spiceworld 25' track list, which leads to this megamix feeling repetitive, if you were to play the bonus disc in full.

I don't have their streaming data from last year, so sadly not (I actually took note of all the Spice Girls stream counts on New Years Day 2022, that's why I'm able to do this cool2.gif )

If I note down every stream count for Steps today, then I could do it in January 2024 maybe 👀

So in the mean time please comment for Spice Girls yahoo.gif

Posted by: sammy01 2nd January 2023, 03:45 PM

No surprises so far, 2 spoken word tracks, 2 live tracks (live songs generally don't stream well) and a 15 minute track when the average song is 2.30 minutes now to cater for a streaming audience.

Look forward to seeing the sharper end. Christmas Wrapping barging into their top 10 maybe? Step to me should be fairly high too seen as it has now 3 versions.

Posted by: sammy01 2nd January 2023, 03:49 PM

Maybe at the end of this Jay you could make a Spotify playlist, just the 51 tracks (use the highest streamed version of those with multiple versions) would make a fun playlist.

Does it include My strongest suit and How does it feel?

Posted by: -Jay- 2nd January 2023, 04:13 PM

That's a great idea! I'll happily make a playlist after this thread is completed cheer.gif Yep, I've included those two tracks as well. cool2.gif

45th: Voodoo

2007 was the year that the Spice Girls finally released a Greatest Hits album. It included two new recordings, one of which is this uptempo number - Voodoo. Hey, hey, party la! It is quite a divisive track in the fanbase, leaning towards the negative (that's my impression). I can't say I've ever come across anybody who really loves this song! Any fans of it here? The Greatest Hits album is a bit hidden away on their Spotify, which I think could be at least one reason to explain why Voodoo is one of their least streamed songs of the year.

2022 Streams: 49,754
Total Streams: 642,878

----------

44th: Ain't No Stopping Us Now (with Luther Vandross)

In November 1997 the Spice Girls' "An Audience With" ITV special aired in the UK, attracting almost 12 million viewers. They were joined by Luther Vandross for a performance of 'Ain't No Stopping Us Now', a song he covered in 1994 (originally a 1979 single by McFadden & Whitehead). The Luther Vandross and Spice Girls performance audio went on to be included as a B Side track on 'Stop' in March 1998!

2022 Streams: 57,823
Total Streams: 431,088

----------

43rd: My Strongest Suit

Elton John & Tim Rice's musical Aida premiered on Broadway in March 2000. This was preceded by a Various Artists soundtrack album released in March 1999, with the Spice Girls having recorded their own version of 'My Strongest Suit'. It's never been included on any official Spice Girls release, so it's arguably one of their most obscure songs. Evidently it did better on Spotify in 2022 than a few of their other tracks though! In fact almost 22% of its overall streams were achieved in 2022.

2022 Streams: 58,157
Total Streams: 268,569

----------

42nd: One of These Girls

When the 'Spice 25' track list was unveiled in 2021, many fans were surprised that only two 'Spice' era B Sides made the cut for the bonus disc - one of those being 'One of These Girls'. The track list was said to have been curated by the girls themselves, so going by that it seems that they still like One of These Girls. This stands to reason given that they occasionally chose this song to perform as an A cappella in 1996 as a means to show off their live vocals and harmonies. It was originally released as a B Side on the '2 Become 1' single.

2022 Streams: 58,483
Total Streams: 511,431

----------

41st: Bumper to Bumper

I'll beep my horn for you! For many of their fans, 'Bumper to Bumper' would have been the second Spice Girls song they ever heard, due to it being the B Side on their huge selling debut single 'Wannabe'. Despite being deemed worthy of release in 1996, it seems some of the members of the Spice Girls may not care for it anymore... because it was snubbed from the 'Spice 25' track list. I think it's really bizarre for an anniversary/expanded release to miss off any B Sides, and I believe that it deserved to be showcased on the bonus disc. Regardless, it attracts more Spotify streams than 'One of These Girls'.

2022 Streams: 62,832
Total Streams: 689,214

Posted by: -Jay- 2nd January 2023, 05:51 PM

40th: Time Goes By

Regarding the songs included across the Spice Girls' three studio albums, Time Goes By has the dubious honour of being their least streamed album track of 2022. If I remember rightly, the girls highlighted this song as being one of their favourites from 'Forever', but it seems the fans don't quite share that level of enthusiasm for the ballad.

2022 Streams: 63,672
Total Streams: 905,720

----------

39th: Walk of Life

This is one of two B Sides attached to the 'Too Much' single. It was performed throughout the first European leg of the Spice Girls' 1998 world tour, but was dropped by the time they reached North America. Early in-house CD-Rs of the 'Spiceworld' album included 'Walk of Life' in the track list, but it was removed from the finalised album. Should it have remained on the album or were they right to demote it to B Side status? In 2022 it found a new home on the 'Spiceworld' 25 bonus disc, and its inclusion has seen a rise in its streaming numbers.

2022 Streams: 64,068
Total Streams: 441,561

----------

38th: Oxygen

Another 'Forever' song leaves in this section. 'Oxygen' is actually their least streamed album track overall, although in 2022 it was more listened to than 'Time Goes By'. In this ballad, oxygen is a metaphor for love, and each girl has their own verse in which they sing what love means to them, or at what stage in their life they feel they are at when it comes to love.

2022 Streams: 66,626
Total Streams: 864,445

----------

37th: Take Me Home

In years gone by 'Take Me Home' was the Spice Girls' least streamed song on Spotify, even behind some of their live tracks - but it's picked up the pace and that is quite probably because of it being included on 'Spice 25'. Over a quarter of its life time Spotify streams occurred in 2022. Deserved! Originally a 'Say You'll Be There' B Side, this track has a dark and brooding quality to it. I think Geri in particular really shines on this song - her gravelly tone somehow really compliments the vibe, and I'd also go as far as to say that Victoria's contribution is one of her personal best vocal moments across the Spice Girls' discography.

2022 Streams: 70,661
Total Streams: 269,391

----------

36th: Weekend Love

And yet another 'Forever' song bites the dust! Let's just say that there's much more better still to come in this countdown!

I'd like Take me home to get more exposure but bar it somehow getting on a radom playlist sadly it wont. Defo one of those songs Universal could push and expose people to a song they have probably never heard.

laugh.gif of course!

I don't hate Voodoo (the song!) by any means, but I feel like a bit more effort could have been put into the lyrics kink.gif I wonder if "party la" was meant to be a nonsensical "zig-a-zig-ah" sort of moment, but I don't think it comes across in the same quirky way as that.

I agree with Sammy that Take Me Home still deserves more exposure than it gets. I'm sure most people haven't got a clue that the Spice Girls have soundscapes like that in their discography!

I think I just drew them standing next to each other in a line, it would have looked really simplistic and I'm sure they wouldn't have had a very close resemblance to the Spice Girls to be honest! rotf.gif I think it was pretty inspired that the cover they went with used the Viva Forever fairies for their looks, and it was cute that it made reference to Victoria and Mel B expecting their first borns!

I kind of wish I'd taken photographs of random things like my drawings from my childhood, even if they weren't so good, it would have been nice to look back on. Also stuff like what my childhood room looked like. I had the walls covered in pop music posters! The only camera we had was one where you'd have to go and get the pictures developed, so I was probably told not to waste the film on random things. kink.gif

Ooooh, I love that you're revisiting these songs! wub.gif Take Me Home is definitely a stand out. I didn't hear that song until I started to collect their CD singles in 1998. I played that one over and over again. I remember my parents telling me to stop it because they found it depressing! laugh.gif

35th: (How Does It Feel to Be) On Top of the World

The official England World Cup song of 1998 was only added to download and streaming platforms on 18th November 2022! The long overdue arrival of this single has had a surprising outcome - the Perfecto Edit remix has been streamed considerably more times than the original version (56,801 vs. 17,972 respectively!). Considering that this single only has 6 weeks of streams contributing to this thread, landing in 35th position is pretty good going.

2022 Streams: 76,850
Total Streams: 76,850 [3 versions - see "Note" below]

Note: There are 5 versions of this track, however two of the mixes have under 1,000 plays each. Spotify doesn't provide figures for songs that haven't been played at least 1,000 times. Therefore, overall, '(How Does It Feel to Be) On Top of the World' will actually have been streamed more than 76,850 times. In theory it could have had a possible maximum total of 78,848, if the other two versions had been streamed 999 times each. The real figure will be somewhere between 76,850 and 78,848.

I'll also use this moment to explain something else: when it comes to Spice Girls songs with more than one version (for instance there's 11 different versions of Spice Up Your Life), during this countdown I will be sharing the combined figures for both "2022 Streams" and "Total Streams". After the count down has ended, I will then share the figures of all the different versions. I just don't want to clog up the commentaries with too many figures!

----------

34th: Outer Space Girls

Get with the MGMVE - guaranteed to blow your mind! 'Too Much' CD singles gave the fans value for money by providing us with two B Sides, and 'Outer Space Girls' has gone on to become the more popular of the two in the streaming age. As of November 2022 it is also Track 2 on the 'Spiceworld 25' bonus disc.

2022 Streams: 78,173
Total Streams: 699,579

----------

33rd: Feed Your Love

The Spice Girls clearly aren't keen on unleashing their unused demos. Across both the 'Spice 25' and 'Spiceworld 25' anniversary editions, the only truly "new" song released is 'Feed Your Love' (which is from the 'Spice' recording sessions, 1995). The R&B slow jam got off to a good start in 2021 with over half a million streams, but its streams slowed down considerably in 2022. Still, we shouldn't overlook that it is out-streaming quite a few of their album tracks and B Sides!

2022 Streams: 88,285
Total Streams: 604,312

----------

32nd: Get Down with Me

We now experience a leap to songs that achieved more than 100k streams in 2022, the first being 'Get Down with Me' from 'Forever'. Mel B is prominent on this funky R&B track, and personally I feel that it's quite underrated by Spice Girls fans!

2022 Streams: 103,972
Total Streams: 1,309,696

----------

31st: Wasting My Time

One complaint that crops up a lot is that some fans feel that 'Get Down with Me' and 'Wasting My Time' are very similar, and that while listening to the 'Forever' album it's like they merge into one long track. I don't actually understand this criticism, I feel like they're quite distinct from each other. Anyway, regardless of my feelings, it's quite a coincidence that they've end up side by side in this count down!

2022 Streams: 104,953

Given I pretty much only stream now, bar the odd vinyl play, having things like How does it feel on streaming is always a big win for me.

Feed your love I rate but it needs a radio edit to knock it down to 4 minutes. 5+ minute songs just aren't streaming friendly.

Get down with me and Wasting my time I find so sonically similar. A good one, two punch on Forever but defo prefer them not one after the other to enjoy them more.

Still mindblowing to think 26 years later and with lots of tours, GH, reunions, anniversary editions, we still only have 51 different songs from the girls and one is a megamix so actually 50!

30th: If You Wanna Have Some Fun

Are you having fun? A favourite from the 'Forever' album for many fans, so the fact it isn't included in the 'This Is Spice Girls' playlist is quite an oversight!

2022 Streams: 114,943
Total Streams: 1,295,081

----------

29th: Right Back at Ya

Whereas 'Right Back at Ya' is included on 'This Is Spice Girls', which is surely the main reason why it achieved more than double the number of streams of 'If You Wanna Have Some Fun' in 2022!

2022 Streams: 241,859
Total Streams: 2,332,874

----------

28th: Sleigh Ride

A cover of the 60s festive classic by The Ronettes! There are two versions of this available - a full length version which is included on the '2 Become 1' single as a B Side, and an Edit included on the Jack Frost OST which cuts out all of the talking moments. It is the B Side version that gets the lion's share of streams.

2022 Streams: 267,148
Total Streams: 2,076,645

----------

27th: Tell Me Why

'Tell Me Why' appeared to be considered as a potential single choice from 'Forever' by Virgin, with club remixes commissioned and promo CDs pressed. Randomly the Jonathan Peters Edit ended up being used as a bonus track on the digital version of Greatest Hits, but all the other mixes have never been digitised.

2022 Streams: 327,651
Total Streams: 3,123,624

----------

26th: The Lady Is a Vamp

We now lose the first song from the girls' second album 'Spiceworld'. Oddly it's the only track from the album to not be a part of the This Is Spice Girls playlist which is a likely reason why its 2022 streams and overall streams lag behind the other tracks. The group seems to really like this one, with it being the only album track they performed in full at the 2007/8 Return of the Spice Girls tour.

I think Spice Invaders would have been quite cute in Spice25, actually. It's such a fun and funny track! Totally random and spice girls in 1997!!

Take Me Home and If You Wanna Have Some Fun are SO LOW!!! It's a crime teresa.gif

Posted by: sammy01 2nd January 2023, 11:15 PM

Urghhhh Jay why do you have to hurt me and remind ne how bad their 'This Is' playlist is.

Fairly big streams for Tell me why considering to most it is a random Forever album track. Just shows the power of being on This is playlist with IYWHSF as it is defo preferred by fans over Right back at ya. The Lady is a vamp is the weakest track from the first 2 albums so no surprise it isn't well streamed.

We can see that Step to me and Christmas Wrapping have been relative successes for them this year streaming wise to make the top 25.

Always thought that Get Down With Me and Wasting My Time were incredible but should have been appart in the album. Wasting My Time would slot really well before If You Wanna Have Some Fun really:

1. Holler
2. Tell Me Why
3. Let Love Lead The Way
4. Right Back At Ya
5. Get Down With Me
6. Weekend Love
7. Time Goes By
8. Wasting My Time
9. If You Wanna Have Some Fun
10. Oxygen
11. Goodbye

or even after, actually!! teresa.gif cheer.gif

Their worst performing single on streaming is predictably 'Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)', which couldn't even manage half a million streams worldwide on Spotify in 2022. It didn't do well on arrival in 2007 and has gone on to be quite forgotten. It was the only single the Spice Girls snubbed from the set list of the 2019 tour.

2022 Streams: 436,848
Total Streams: 3,578,067

----------

24th: Step to Me

'Step to Me' was originally released in 1997 as a CD single via a promotion with Pepsi, and it bridged the gap between the 'Spice' and 'Spiceworld' eras. Later that same year, a different mix of it was included on the Japanese version of 'Spiceworld'. Then... 25 years had to pass for it to find life in the digital age! The original Pepsi single version was finally released to download and stream at the end of September 2022, preceding the 25th anniversary edition of 'Spiceworld'. An extended mix and demo version (which is seemingly ripped from YouTube!!) also made it onto the bonus disc. Across these three versions it was streamed 458,584 times in 2022. Frustratingly it hasn't been added to the This Is Spice Girls Spotify playlist which is going to stunt its potential going forwards.

2022 Streams: 458,584
Total Streams: 458,584

----------

23rd: Denying

Over half a million streams for the 'Spiceworld' album track 'Denying', one of the more downtempo moments on the LP. Sadly they've not given this song an outing on tour since 1998!

2022 Streams: 523,934
Total Streams: 4,105,470

----------

22nd: Naked

The same can be said for 'Naked', which has only been performed at the Spiceworld 1998 tour. It was certainly memorable, with the girls sat on backwards facing chairs & giving the illusion of them being undressed. Emma's spoken-word phone call section, Melanie C's powerful bridge... so good! However it is the least streamed song from 'Spice'.

2022 Streams: 637,613
Total Streams: 4,705,649

----------

21st: Let Love Lead the Way

Another single doesn't make it into their Top 20 most streamed songs on Spotify of 2022, and it's 'Let Love Lead the Way'. This makes it their lowest placed UK #1 single in the count down! This ballad was released in 2000 alongside 'Holler'.

No but Naked and Step To Me should be in their Top10 most streamed ever anyway the Spotify charts and stream counts are based on payola and record-company agreements on playlisting and not real, genuine interaction with the QUALITY of the music because if it were, and the world was a just place not based on who can pay better, then we could actually experience collective JOY over this great music!

The way Universal should be sent to JAIL for the crimes against their back catalogue outside of Wannabe, I swear Im going to camp outside of their offices naked and chained to a public trash bin until they sort their mess out and make JUSTICE for the actual better songs in the Spice Girls back catalogue!!

Both songs would have well over 1Billion streams anyway and that's my two pence!

20th: Something Kinda Funny

We start off the Top 20 with the 'Spice' album track 'Something Kinda Funny'. They performed this for the first time at the Live in Istanbul shows. The live audio track was included on the 'Stop' single (therefore it contributes to this track's streaming). However the performance was omitted from both the 1997 VHS and 2007 DVD releases for... reasons? As were quite a few other performances. Honestly these girls, their team and the shenanigans they've put us through over the years regarding what they do and don't release...!

2022 Streams: 822,333
Total Streams: 5,996,982

----------

19th: Do It

A song that both Melanie C and Mr.X dislike, so I guess they didn't contribute towards too many of its streams!!

2022 Streams: 826,628
Total Streams: 5,721,928

----------

18th: Last Time Lover

This is the only song across both the 'Spice' and 'Spiceworld' albums that they've never performed live. I wonder why they didn't, not even in the 90s? For me, this fact makes it one of their more underrated songs - although regardless, it performs very nicely on streaming (maybe it being Track 5 on 'Spice' is helpful?). A demo version was officially released on 'Spice 25' which contributed over 50k of its streams in 2022.

2022 Streams: 947,090
Total Streams: 6,107,157

----------

(Their Top 17 songs all managed 1m+ streams in 2022! I will start to reveal those later)

Amazing to think some of these classic album tracks did the same amount of streams all year as Christmas Wrapping did in 2 days.

I think that makes sense tbh. Even though they had gorgeous ballads and actually released more ballads than uptempo, their chaotic image and vibe lends itself to remembering them as a upbeat pop group.

I'm honestly trying to understand the comment: the album version of Viva Forever for example, is over 5 minutes, and is beautiful and streams just fine. Can you clarify why "5+ minute songs just aren't streaming friendly"? confused.gif cool2.gif

Because people usually stream for a set amount of time. I'm having a shower so will put X playlist, artist or song on. If you spend 15 minutes in the shower and songs are 5 minutes you listen to 3. If you have songs that are 3 minutes you listen ro 5.

Because of streaming most chart hits these days come in under 3 minutes. Music is basically fast food now in consumption.

I know you are right but honestly this is so depressing... The fact that artists now condition themselves to under 3mins so they can be streamed better is so vile...

There are a bunch of new releases who have started to go against this, such as Beyonce's last album and SZA's as well (one of the tracks goes over 6mins!).

I hope the algorhythm changes as this is killing the artistic freedom of lesser known artists in favour of a stupid platforms' rules!

17th: Move Over

Now we've reached the songs that managed over a million streams in 2022! Move Over just about managed that milestone, and was helped along by the recently released Live in Istanbul version. It's the only album track that was included on their 2007 release 'Greatest Hits' (likely due to its recognisability of being a Pepsi advert jingle) but I'm not sure whether being on the Greatest Hits does a great deal in lifting up its streaming numbers because that compilation isn't very prominent on Spotify...

2022 Streams: 1,004,715
Total Streams: 6,779,100

----------

16th: If U Can't Dance

The 10th and final track on 'Spice' was chosen to open their concerts in Istanbul in 1997 and their world tour in 1998, which was a pretty inspired choice rather than them going with a single. Despite being a popular live track, they've unfortunately never released live audio of it. However a demo version was made available via 'Spice 25'.

2022 Streams: 1,021,833
Total Streams: 6,740,777

----------

15th: Love Thing

The most streamed album track from 'Spice' is 'Love Thing'! Virgin Records heard single potential in this track, but of course it ultimately it didn't get chosen. It's certainly a fan favourite! There's two other versions that can be streamed - Live from Istanbul and 12" Unlimited Groove Mix.

2022 Streams: 1,268,544
Total Streams: 7,349,493

----------

14th: Saturday Night Divas

In terms of live performances, the Spice Girls have sadly paid dust to this song other than at the Istanbul shows in 1997. It was used as backing music for one of the most memorable Spiceworld The Movie scenes! Otherwise... nothing. Why do they overlook it? It seems particularly strange that they snubbed it in 2019 because it had already established itself as one of their most streamed songs at that point, and that has continued to be the case in the years that have gone by since those shows. So they'd better give it the justice it deserves if they ever tour again! It has out streamed every album track from 'Spice' which seems quite surprising. Stop underestimating this incredible song, ladies, we love it!

2022 Streams: 1,395,954
Total Streams: 8,609,223

----------

13th: Never Give Up on the Good Times

This is their only album track to have exceeded 10 million streams on Spotify, with over 2 million of those occurring in 2022. Clearly it was a missed single opportunity, but some belated justice was given to the song last year - it now has its own official music video (which uses clips of the girls from over the years). What a bop! However it wasn't their most streamed non-single in 2022...

Oh which one?

Also, they must bring back Saturday Night Divas! It was rumoured to be a medley with Something Kinda Funny in 2019, but never materialised. It would have fitted perfectly in that section, or even right after Love Thing. I guess Victoria's part was massive in that one, so Geri would have had to step up.

All great songs so far though! All deserve to be in the top teirs of their discography! Never Give Up On The Good Times was definitely the single that went away. WHAT A BOP! And it always pops off live funky.gif cheer.gif

I mean it's not an 'algorithm' thing, it's just... maths. Good luck changing the fundamental fact that shorter songs can be streamed more times in the same period of time than longer ones kink.gif (Obviously there are going to be exceptions with longer songs that nonetheless stream very well - 'All Too Well (Taylor's Version) (10 Minute Version)' says hello - but the general trend going to shorter songs was just inevitable).

Shocked and appalled that 'Spice Invaders' isn't #1 here tbh. x

That would be equally awful and you would end up with a load of 8 minute songs.

The main problem is the charts companies let streaming run away without getting proper control of it and now we are too far down the rabbit hole.

There are so many areas where streams and how they are counted for the charts if we started from scratch now would almost certainly be different. Firstly allowing songs to endlessly earn 'sales' from streaming thus now most of the biggest selling songs ever are recent hits from the streaming era. Streams from playlists essentially deciding the singles chart these days. Album streams not being from people actually clicking on and playing the album and so on.

12th: Holler

Over the many years that we've been tracking the Spice Girls' streaming progress on Spotify, 'Holler' would usually always out-stream 'Goodbye', apart from at Christmas time. This was a bit of a curiosity considering that 'Goodbye' was a considerably bigger hit back in the day. Well, the tide has turned, because 'Holler' is below it this year. I don't think 'Holler' has experienced a particularly notable dip in streams, I think it's more the case that 'Goodbye' experienced a surge. Anyway, this 2000 released song was the first taste of the American-produced R&B direction that they'd decided to pursue on their third album 'Forever'. Personally I think this is still a fresh sounding single, one of my ultimate favourites. Even though this ranks as their third lowest single in this count down, it is at least considerably far ahead of the numbers that 'Let Love Lead the Way' and 'Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)' are managing.

2022 Streams: 3,467,481
Total Streams: 22,445,516

----------

11th: Goodbye

2022 surely must have been Goodbye's strongest ever year for streaming. Over 23% of its lifetime stream count occurred last year, and it outpaced 'Holler' by over a million streams. That's quite the turn around and I'm certainly happy to see 'Goodbye' getting more attention than usual! I wonder what has caused this climb? Long may it continue, because 'Goodbye' is getting very close to being a "millionaire" seller in the UK (a recent sales figure is 977,000). Keep streaming!

2022 Streams: 4,475,452
Total Streams: 19,294,832

----------

10th: Christmas Wrapping

This must be the first time that the Spice Girls' Top 10 streamed songs of the year on Spotify weren't all singles! Starting off their Top 10 is 'Christmas Wrapping', which is the B Side to 'Goodbye'. Who would have ever thought that the B Side would one day receive more attention than the A Side? It's all thanks to Spotify adding 'Christmas Wrapping' to the Christmas Pop playlist towards the beginning of December. This lifted the song from its usual "a few thousand streams a day" status, to hundreds of thousands per day - with an incredible peak of 452,003 plays on Christmas Eve. To put that into context, on just that day alone 'Christmas Wrapping' was streamed more times than 'Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)' in the entirety of 2022 (436,848 plays)! Over 80% of 'Christmas Wrapping' overall streams occurred in 2022. This certainly demonstrates the extreme power of being prominent on a popular playlist. Although 'Christmas Wrapping' is credited to Spice Girls, it is in fact a duet between Melanie C and Emma Bunton. Their two pregnant bandmates were taking time off!

Loving this count down. A thoroughly enjoyable read. It brings to light some of the crucial album tracks and b sides that aren’t included in the This is Spice Girls playlist.

They should probably remove most of the solo stuff (except maybe the most successful single from each girl tacked on the end) and include:

• Step To Me
• Take Me Home
• Outer Space Girls
• Walk Of Life
• One Of These Girls
• If You Wanna Have Some Fun
• Get Down With Me
• Voodoo

Yes Voodoo. Because I actually like it. But then, I thought they were singing “Party line” for years. Like they were arranging a night out over the telephone party line, Mean Girls style. Lol

9th: Too Much

'Too Much' has 5 versions that can be streamed. It probably goes without saying that it's the album version that achieves the vast majority of the streams (5,010,068 in 2022). The previously unheard "Live in Toronto, Canada" is included on Spiceworld 25, but it only attracted 19,803 streams since the anniversary album's release.

8th: Mama

It's not just for Mother's Day!

2022 Streams: 6,307,243
Total Streams: 31,973,705

----------

7th: Viva Forever

Now we're reaching their more highly streamed songs - 'Viva Forever' achieved over twice as many streams as 'Mama' in 2022! Like with all of their other singles, it's the album version that picks up by far the most streams for 'Viva Forever' (12,111,546 in 2022), but other versions performed decently too, including the Radio Edit with 725,803, and the recently released John Themis Ambient Mix proved to be one of the more popular bonus tracks on 'Spiceworld 25' with 122,599 streams last year. Personal opinion: This is one of the most beautiful songs of all time and quite frankly it deserves 60 billion streams rather than 60 million xx

2022 Streams: 13,007,603
Total Streams: 60,175,875

----------

6th: Who Do You Think You Are

One thing that 'Mama', 'Viva Forever' and 'Who Do You Think You Are' have in common is that none of them were released as singles in the US. I'm not sure if that particularly hinders these songs in any way, although Spotify is rather US-centric... so, maybe it does a bit? Not that these are bad numbers by any means. I just wish that playlist curators would sometimes consider 'Who Do You Think You Are' over 'Wannabe' for party themed playlists, for instance.

5th: 2 Become 1

Coming very close to 20m streams in 2022 alone is their third single '2 Become 1'. Like 'Too Much' and 'Goodbye', this single experiences a streaming boost at Christmas time thanks to being a UK Christmas #1 single, although clearly this single is popular all year round - and their highest ballad in this list.

Feel like they could take advantage of 2 become 1 more than they do. Always have said it should have a Christmas mix released to sound more like a Christmas song.

Streaming defo favours the more upbeat songs though when seeing 2 become 1 their highest ballad at 5!

4th: Say You'll Be There

A previously unheard 7" Radio Mix version was released as part of the 25th Anniversary of 'Spice' in 2021 and it does pretty decent numbers on Spotify - 374,257 in 2022. Alongside a smattering of other remixes picking up a few thousand streams each, this took the overall 'Say You'll Be There' 2022 streams to over 20.1m, with 19,698,806 coming from the album version.

2022 Streams: 20,166,625
Total Streams: 108,864,883

----------

3rd: Spice Up Your Life

I'm pretty certain that 'Spice Up Your Life' is the song of theirs with the most different versions available to stream - 12 different mixes in total! Of course it's the album version that gets the most attention (20,795,300) but the Morales Radio Mix was also popular in 2022 with 798,405 streams.

The multiple versions of SUYL and SW25 seem to certainly have helped it get to double plat quicker than expected. Hopefully not too long till SYBT joins it.

Spice up your life makes sense with it having surpassed say you’ll be there’s streams. I guess it’s stop and wannabe as the top two!? I love how much stop has become such a signature hit for them in the download and streaming eras!

I have to admit, I'm a bit of a fan myself of Spice Girls. It's always interesting to see which tracks are resonating with listeners, and I'm sure the #1 song won't come as much of a surprise to most people. It's great to see the group still has such a dedicated fan base all these years later. They inspired me to work on my own music. If you're looking to boost your streams on Spotify, you might consider buying plays. I recently came across this site called Streaming Famous (https://streamingfamous.com/buy-spotify-plays/), and they seem to have some good options for increasing your streams.

Unfortunately I've never noted down their solo music streams count at new years. sad.gif The last time I did that was on 22nd May 2022... it might be a bit random but I could always make sure that I do a solo update on 22nd May 2023 and have it be a countdown of how many streams they got in the space of 12 months, even if it isn't within one calendar year. thinking.gif

2nd: Stop

'Stop' ended the Spice Girls' consecutive streak of UK #1 singles when it reached #2 in March 1998. Not only that, but it also sold significantly less copies than their other 90s hits - it certified Silver, while their other eight singles from the 90s achieved Platinum status. What went wrong? We've discussed & shared our theories about this many times over the years. Despite the relatively muted reception to 'Stop' at the time of its release, it has experienced a major rise in popularity in the digital era, which has been very rewarding to see! The song now firmly feels like one of their most iconic and remembered singles. The introduction of streaming contributing to sales figures helped 'Stop' finally certified Gold in the UK, and then Platinum in 2020! It's their 2nd most streamed song of 2022 by quite a distance, as well as all-time.

2022 Streams: 27,194,550
Total Streams: 142,553,992

----------

1st: Wannabe

'Wannabe' really needs no introduction - what a monster of a hit this song was, and continues to be! It topped charts all over the world throughout 1996 and 1997, launching the Spice Girls to global superstardom. It has always been their biggest selling single, and over a quarter of a century later it continues to be their most successful song on streaming. Just look at those streaming numbers at the bottom of this post! In 2022 alone it was streamed more times on Spotify than 'Stop' has been in total. It's fantastic that they have a song that continues to resonate with new generations, although I wish some of their other singles would get more of a spotlight - they're extremely overshadowed by 'Wannabe'. Its combined stream count of 823 million is more than the rest of their songs have managed overall, with 809 million. Although in 2022, almost 147m streams of 'Wannabe' didn't quite manage to outdo the rest of their songs combined, almost 156m.

2022 Streams: 146,899,732
Total Streams: 822,894,080

* Sleigh Ride had to be a combined figure because in January 2022 Spotify had combined the stream count of the two versions, even though they would eventually separate them again... so I couldn't work out how many streams the two versions managed individually in 2022.

Step to me (7 inch mix) has already done 27.5k this year in 8 days. Be interesting to see how it does over the whole of this year.

I think we all need to look at Wannabe differently, it getting less playlisting or exposure I don't think would mean the other songs getting more tbh. I think a lot of these playlists it would be Wannabe or nothing by the girls and that is it.

Also obviously new music would garner interest in their whole discography, as new music would suck people into exploring their older albums not just think Spice Girls = Wannabe.

I guess it's like that, and that's the way it is.

I still don't understand Stop's initial lower sales in the 90s though. The chart position, well it was always going to likely they would miss the top spot at some point (and how iconic to stop the run of number ones with a song called Stop lol), but the sales being that low (for them of course) silver when both Too Much and Viva forever were platinum sellers on either side of it has always surprised me. It's easily their most loved song after Wannabe and it's the song that people who don't even like Spice Girls say "oh I love this song" due to it's retro motown feel, yet the initial sales did not reflect that at all... streaming has done it wonders.

I'm guessing that part of it might've been that they didn't ship/produce more copies of it than they did initially + the lower sales climate in March. It actually had a fairly long chart run (17 weeks).

Plus, I feel like once it failed to hit number one stores probably stopped featuring it in a prominent position, something that probably affected sales in what would normally be its biggest sellings weeks bar the first week.

Posted by: Mr.X 19th March 2023, 11:58 AM

Don't forget that there was also a big backlash against them after Simon's firing. People were starting to go agaisnt them and the press had filled day after filled day against them as a band. It also was a song that denoted they as a band were singing about wanting to slow down... It was quite meta to be honest.

It was bound to happen. Viva Forever turned it around because of the Geri leaving drama, it became an emotional angle and the song's own emotional take on teh end of a loving relationship for the summer.

It's just great that Stop has become an enduring and loved smash hit, probably their second biggest song in the long run!

Posted by: -Jay- 19th March 2023, 12:17 PM

Stop also didn't do that much for Spiceworld, relatively speaking. Spice spent time at #1 when Mama/Who Do You Think You Are was charting, yet Spiceworld was only #17 in the week Stop went to #2... so the single didn't even help to create a significant boost for the album. In fact #17 was a fall, it was #16 in the week before Stop's release.

To be fair Viva Forever didn't do a whole lot for Spiceworld either, it managed to climb to #15.

Comparing Stop's chart run with Spiceworld's chart run -

02-04-07-11-12-17-29-36-53-52-55-58-57-59-70-82-69-52-86 [Stop]
17-16-19-15-12-14-22-21-26-30-27-24-26-32-36-22-22-23-24 [Spiceworld]

(Spiceworld's climb to 15-12-14 was more likely due to the Spiceworld tour beginning in the UK rather than Stop. Interestingly the album fell when Geri left, rather than getting a boost. The 26-32-36 part of the chart run directly follows Geri's departure, so in the week after she left it fell from #24 to #26. The eventual climb to 22-22-23-24 was while Viva Forever was promoted/getting airplay).

Viva Forever with Spiceworld -

01-01-03-08-08-14-21-28-38-47-50-53-61-00-00-00-82-85-99 [Viva Forever]
21-16-15-23-23-24-30-32-38-40-39-43-49-65-77-83-86-94-85 [Spiceworld]

(The 32-38-40 part of this chart run is when they played Sheffield / Wembley Stadium!)

Viva Forever outsold Stop in just 2 weeks. Viva Forever sold 390,000 in a fortnight (and 623,000 in 1998 overall), whereas Stop sold 331,000 in the whole of 1998.

Goodbye outsold Stop in just 1 week (its first week sales were almost 381,000) and then it overtook Viva Forever in just 3 weeks (2nd week sales: 208,000 / 3rd week sales: 92,000 = 681,000 in 1998). It's funny to think that it's an inevitability that Stop will overtake both of these singles in a few years from now.

VF was massively helped with sales because of Geri’s departure!

Similar thing happened when Take That released How Deep Is Your Love after Robbie went!

Thank you, Jay

Really interesting read plus it was interesting to see how the Spiceworld album was doing alongside the singles, Geri leaving and the tour.

Such a shame the album didn’t spend more weeks in the Top 10. If Celine Dion hadn’t released an album at the same time and people had just purchased the titanic soundtrack in the new year it would have had more weeks at No.1 as Spiceworld spent a few weeks at No.2

The time has (almost) come. Are you gonna do it? wink.gif

What will be interesting will be to see the impact the songs that got added to the 'This is' playlist when it updated. Will make this year much more interesting as some of the songs on it are a bit random.

Also just how well SUYL has done this year compared to last year. I suspect in a few years it will overtake 2 become 1 in the UK to be their 2nd biggest seller.

For instance, Spice Girls Party Mix achieved 35,720 streams in 2022 but that was in just 2 months, and 146,974 streams throughout 2023.

Hi Jay before you post the streams for the year here’s a rundown of December for each of the Christmas singles plus Christmas wrapping on Spotify

Thanks for these December stats! Honestly I wish their Christmas #1s were more of an event in December than that. cry.gif Given these are worldwide figures, in the UK alone they're not really getting a lot of streams over the holiday season. Actual Christmas songs dominate so much, that I guess for a lot of people there's little time to dedicate to "normal songs", even if they have a connection to Christmas like these Spice Girls singles do.

In particular I wish that 2 Become 1 came close to being regarded in the same way as East 17 - Stay Another Day is. It's interesting that the East 17 song has become embraced as a pseudo Christmas song when it has nothing to do with Christmas. It's just the fact its production evokes a feeling of Christmas. I personally feel like 2 Become 1's production makes me feel Christmassy too, but clearly streaming platforms / the general public don't really think so.

What will be interesting will be to see the impact the songs that got added to the 'This is' playlist when it updated. Will make this year much more interesting as some of the songs on it are a bit random.

Looking at some stats, I think it does indeed show the impact that 'This Is' has had. All of their B Sides (not counting Sleigh Ride) have had better years, while a few of their album tracks have suffered. I still find it bizarre that their team has decided that many of their album tracks don't belong on their top followed playlist. drama.gif

I mean ok it's nice for their B Sides to get some more attention than they otherwise would, but they don't really benefit anything in particular for the Spice Girls in terms of sales. I have to wonder whether the amount of sales that Spice and Spiceworld get on a weekly basis in the UK has declined since the playlist update.

Thank you, Jay for the Spotify stats for this year. A lot of hard work. Much appreciated.

Amazing to see how much ‘Wannabe’ has increased in the past year and good to see ‘Viva Forever’ also increasing too. I just wish there wasn’t such a gap between ‘Wannabe’ and ‘Stop’s’ totals.

You're welcome! wub.gif And me too. I guess we should see Stop make it to 200m by the end of 2024. But their singles deserve higher numbers than what they have. cry.gif

Things that stand out to me -

Step to me actually does well, they should use it and push it more.

Christmas Wrapping is a monster to make their top 10 two years in a row. They really should be running with it, 7 inch vinyl, lyric video.

SUYL have a very good year.

Some of the album tracks are disappointing, but then they never use or promote them.

Same 51 songs as last year sigh. 360m streams is pretty amazing when you think they give fans/the public absolutely nothing new to entice them to go to their page and stream.

Thank you Jay, amazing work and good to see it all layed down in such a clear way!

A few things to note:

The record lable should really capitalise more on Spice Up Your Life and Christmas Wrapping seemingly as both have done well these past couple of years.

SUYL should have gotten the same treatment as Wannabe for its 25th anniversary, really. With a proper re-release and more widely publicised. It's a classic on part of Stop, 2 Become 1 and Say You'll Be There and should be shinning as one of their crowing glories

Christmas Wrapping did well again. If they play their cards right, it could be a continuous staple on the season, and a cute lyric video could do wonders for it too. But they need to capitalise more on it, making sure it is used in media, films, and defnitely more playlisting etc.

Holler and Goodbye really are done dirty. Both songs deserve much better and more of a push and I hope that 2025 brings a new focus to both of those songs, specially if the group are doing something next year as well.

They do well on streaming overall, at least on Spotify, for an inactive group that hasnt really released anything new for 20 years. I would gather than similar numbers are seen on Apple Music too and with the other platforms too, it seems like the girls themselves could get a couple of million pounds a year just from streaming and on-going sales, licensing to movies (Barbie probably paid them a bit as well!), adverts (althogh there hasnt been one in ages!), etc.

Posted by: sammy01 2nd January 2024, 09:44 PM

Licensing is probably where they make the big money, Barbie, Doctor Who, NYE London fireworks, WDYTYA was on an advert for the BBC over xmas as was the instrumental for Christmas Wrapping.

2 become 1 a few years ago seemed to get way more traction at christmas time!

I think Ladybaby has killed the 'specialness' of being Christmas number 1. Having 5 in a row and them all being pretty awful I think has put people off listening to those Christmas number 1 playlist or the TV music channels playing Christmas number 1 count downs as much.

Posted by: Buzzz 3rd January 2024, 12:46 PM

Thanks for doing this, Jay. It's much appreciated!

Wannabe is so MASSIVE that just in the past year it has been streamed more times than Stop has in its entire lifetime. ohmy.gif

Unfortunately I can see why to be honest... Not just Ladbaby crap, but for like 10years in a row it was mainly cheap and awful X-Factor winners singles which got to #1 blink.gif The specialness of the Christmas #1 battle has decreased since then as it started to revolve all around a TV show rather than the music and the season itself.

Not that it was ever about the quality of the music, mind you, but genuinely seemed like there was more ballance before.

The girls should absolutely release an EP with Christmas mixes of their Xmas #1 songs, which would then bring them back to the conversation and improve their placing in playlists, imo!

I think we often over look just how big Wannabe is, it is the 3rd biggest streamed 90s song on Spotify by UK artists behind Oasis Wonderwall and Radiohead Creep.

In terms of 90s UK music, UK and WW girl groups it is about as big as you can get.

Work from home by Fifth Harmony has more streams than Wannabe but Wannabe out streams it daily now by about 250k streams.

It is an absolute monster of a song.

I think if we could go back in tim3 and so it all again, Spicey Ladies wouls need another song or two likeWannabe, so do 3 of those with that intro style with Biff, to have 3 huge streaming signature hits

This is very true, it is massive! And rightly so. I just wish there was just as much focus on some of the other singles as well. For artists of their caliber and success, they really should be better streamed overall. Destiny's Child, Britney, Oasis, Madonna all have multiple songs much better streamed than they do. It really sucks and I hope they get to turn that around with proper focus on their catalogue one day!

It's just they were never that big anyway and only had two albums, plus one double a side.
