As the charts turn the big 70 I thought it might be a nice time to tip our hats to those people that make the music industry turn- yes the songwriter!

There have been over 2300 listed people who have written or co-written a UK No 1 single but as we clearly get through them all, this thread will look at the those folk that wrote at least 5 chart toppers since 1952.

The idea was a little last minute so apologies if I haven't credited someone I should but I THINK I have everyone. So how is it compiled?

I make it 114 individuals on the list who have written 5 or more No 1's

For some I’ve had to rely on Wikipedia so yeah there could be the odd ones missing but here’s how I’ve worked them out

1) A writer must be listed as a writer on the credit (this sometimes happens with samples but not always)

2) Writers here are listed by firstly the amount of chart toppers they wrote and then secondly by the weeks their compositions were at No 1

3) A note on medley’s= the likes of Jive Bunny and Winifred Atwell I have not included as they were medley’s of multiple hits and it was impossible to add them in- However where there is a mash up of two or three tracks or samples and a credit was received then these were eligible for the list.

4) Double A-Sides- Each side will count as a separate entry. However where both sides are written by the same writer it will not be added to their “weeks at No 1” tally

5) Cover versions- Any version which makes No 1 will get a credit however subsequent versions will not count in the songwriters total of chart toppers but it will be added to their “weeks at No 1 tally" so all those versions of “Unchained Melody” will only count as one chart topper though the total number of weeks at No 1 will be added together.

6) Where people have written with the same people on all their UK No 1's I have listed them together as a "song partnership" however where even 1 entry is different they have their own post.

There will be some obvious people on the list but please refrain from preempting future posts just to make it more fun!

The list includes everything from 1952 to "Anti-Hero" by Taylor Swift

Lastly please enjoy the thread!

Interesting idea! Having written many songs myself, I've always had a huge amount of respect for songwriters, I feel they don't get enough credit. I think I can name quite a few that will appear here but will wait and see who comes up smile.gif

sounds like a lot of work! Well done cheer.gif Ironically Barry Manilow didn't write the songs that made the young girls cry - it was Bruce Johnston sometimes-Beach Boy, and David Cassidy had the UK hit so he didnt even sing the song that made the young girls cry in the UK laugh.gif (Nor did he write Mandy, Scott English did and had the first hit version as Brandy). So none of the above will feature in the list: Spoiler alert!

I think I know who's top, but with some artists getting a number one on a weekly basis these days I may yet be shocked! Looking forward to seeing some unheralded fab songwriters getting some kudos...

No 114- Danny Jones (5)- 6 weeks

Chart toppers:

• 5 Colours In Her Hair (2004)
• Obviously (2004)
• I’ll Be OK (2005)
• Please Please (2006)
• Star Girl (2006)

Two members of Mcfly are present on this list and Jones is the first one, he originally auditioned for 00s boyband “V” didn’t get the gig but met Tom Fletcher and McFly were born so I guess he lost the battle but won the war that day.

No 113- Frederic Riesterer (5)- 6 weeks

Chart toppers:

• When Love Takes Over (2009)
• I Gotta Feeling (2009)
• Getting’ Over You (2010)
• Club Can’t Handle Me (2010)
• Lovers On The Sun (2014)

Regular collaborator with Guetta, Riesterer was a French producer and DJ who is sadly no longer with us (died in 2019). A DJ who was a regular on local radio in the 90s he must have got a good paycheck with “I Gotta Feeling”

112- Flo Rida (5)- 6 weeks

Chart Toppers:

• Right Round (2009)
• Bad Boys (2009)
• Club Can’t Handle Me (2010)
• Good Feeling (2012)
• Troublemaker (2012)

Some may ungenerously ponder his credit on some of these hits (the phrase used to be rent-a-rapper) but regardless here he is. After a good 7 years of hits he hasn’t been seen in the charts since 2015, well apart from 2021 when he popped up at Eurovision.

Well, there's one name that I don't recognise already! It's interesting to find out more about the creatives behind the scenes.

Today I learned that Danny Jones auditioned for V ohmy.gif I remember 'Hip to Hip' from the accompanying Now album. That's not a patch on '5 Colours In Her Hair' and all its surf guitar glory, though. *.*

This is going to be a really interesting thread, and could be an interesting mix of artists and less familiar names.

One might even call it 'surprisingly interesting' magic.gif

I guess the other member of McFly who will be on the list had a writing credit on a non McFly song then? I already can't think what that would be off the top of my head.

(edit: actually probably just other McFly songs that Danny didn't get a credit for)

^No, Tom actually co-wrote a couple of number ones for a certain other band who were big at around the same time, but I won't spoil it by saying any more.

I guess Flo Rida "wrote" his parts in the songs he was featured

surprised already! I expect there will be loads of rent-a-rappers on the list so they really are going to be flattered to be included. I also have never heard of Frederic R - that's pretty much going to be a given for post-physical tracks. In the olden days you just looked at the label or cover to see who wrote a song, and they were frequently listed in the credits to songs in print magazines, so it was fairly easy to see who'd written the songs. These days nobody has a clue unless it's PR-driven hype, especially when whole mini-communities come together to write a song.... ohmy.gif

Yeah, it does seem that these days you get a writing credit if you happened to be in the studio when a song was written. It seems to be quite common to have 8-10 writers credited on a song, and I know that a lot of songs sample other songs these days so the writers of the sampled song get a credit, but just taking 'The Loneliest' by Maneskin as an example, I'm not aware it samples anything, yet it lists 9 writers - I'm intrigued to know exactly how much each person actually contributed to it!

What is the record for most songwriters credited on a number one hit?

I'm not sure why it's hard to believe that featured rappers largely write their own verses? (Yes there are a few cases of rappers being known to use ghostwriters but let's not dismiss the entire concept of rapping because of that)

many artists and labels do "songwriting camps", thats why there are so many songwriters included
think Beyonce is the best example, her last album had crazy lots of songwriters

THIS!! When I first read what this thread entailed I just immediately thought that this must have been quite the project to undertake.

That Alexandra Burke performance, eh? Back when X Factor was great.
