BuzzJack Music Forum _ Eurovision Song Contest _ #EurovisionAgain

Posted by: Vülker Apr 14 2020, 02:36 PM

I don't know if this has been posted around here yet, but every Saturday at 8pm Twitter gets together to watch a previous Eurovision together.

So far they've done it for the 2013, 2006, 2009 and 2015 contests with the EBU making a Premiere of the last two on YouTube as they've joined and supported https://twitter.com/EurovisionAgain.

It's been the #1 trending topic in the UK, and it even hit #7 in the US; The Huffington Post UK have even written about it; Alexander Rybak and Daz Sampson(?) themselves annouced their respective contests; and last week it saw over £3600 being raised for charity.

They've ran their own voting since the second weekend with Carola winning over Lordi, however "Fairytale" and "Heroes" have won their respective years.

It's hands-down the most fun I've been having in isolation and a good replacement for the usual Eurovision festivities. I'm hoping it grows bigger and bigger so that we can get a semblance of a meaningful vote for the 2020 songs on May 16th! cheer.gif

I always miss out on these haha but I did watch the 2009 one a little later and I was surprised to see how many quality songs were in that final!

Dublin 1997! Man, this feels like a proper acid flashback laugh.gif

Posted by: tommie Apr 18 2020, 07:09 PM

Posted by: tommie Apr 18 2020, 07:15 PM

Man, I always tend to forget how damn trippy the mid-to-late 90s actually was. I'm actually starting to wonder if I accidentally ate some magic mushrooms and we're only two entries in - add those damn trippy sequences between the acts too. laugh.gif

Posted by: tommie Apr 18 2020, 07:25 PM

I'm the only one watching this but Austria's One Step is an... entry. The blue glittery crop top, pants and with a dark blue coat is a fashion choice. laugh.gif

Posted by: tommie Apr 18 2020, 08:12 PM

OK, how did Bosnia and Herzegovinian's entry Goodbye not get disqualified for that pretty blatant sample?!

Posted by: Sandra ❤️ Apr 18 2020, 08:13 PM

Watching this on twitter and 1997 is honestly such a contest of extremes quality wise!

Posted by: tommie Apr 18 2020, 08:18 PM

Oh, Blond. I recall them not doing that well, but in the Swedish press it was a bit like "at LEAST we're not Norway" IIRC laugh.gif

Also, you could land an airplane on the long haired ones forehead.

Posted by: tommie Apr 18 2020, 08:43 PM

90s Danish rap... oh dear laugh.gif

Posted by: tommie Apr 18 2020, 09:02 PM

WHAT. THE. HELL. ICELAND.

CROTCH SHOT ALERT! CROTCH SHOT ALERT!

THAT DAMN 90S BEAT. SAVE ME MOMMY THIS IS DEMONIC

What was it ripping off? It was my second favourite of the night, but partly because that title + Bosnia was getting me all emotional cry.gif #ripBosnia

It's a complete rip-off of a famous 60s song that I can't remember the title of at the moment. It's really obvious once you hear it though.

Iceland's entry is my new favourite best/worst entry. It's hilariously horrible.

Posted by: Vülker Apr 19 2020, 12:04 PM

I thought the Dutch entry had the most obvious rip-off. Live and Let Die right from the off!

It sounded to me like Peggy March's "I Will Follow Him"

That's exactly the song I was thinking about! It's so obvious:

I really enjoyed the 97 rewatch and glad that some older contests are being uploaded in HD. Was initially reluctant to get involved cos I don't subscribe to the cult of personality of the guy running it but it was actually really fun

Posted by: diva thin muffin Apr 25 2020, 05:03 PM

Who’s watching tonight? EA have revealed tonight’s contest is held in a city that has only hosted ESC once.

Posted by: Sandra ❤️ Apr 25 2020, 06:09 PM

I've got a hunch it's 2007 but I'm prepared to be proven wrong in about half an hour!

Posted by: AdamAloud Apr 25 2020, 06:15 PM

Providing I don't fall asleep I shall be here for this, especially as it's looking like a 2000's contest, hoping for 2008!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuvUVAJuhbA&feature=youtu.be, tweet along with #EurovisionAgain

Posted by: LexC May 2 2020, 05:07 PM

So tonight's clue is that it's from a city that's held the title of European Capital of Culture (so it could be any of the Stockholm, Dublin and Copenhagen contests, Istanbul 2004, Riga 2003, Talinn 2002 or potentially Lisbon 2018) and there's this collage-style picture

Does that look a bit like *whispers*Celine Dion*whispers* to anyone else?

Posted by: Condebola* May 2 2020, 05:19 PM

2003 plz

Posted by: LexC May 2 2020, 05:23 PM

I hope it's 2003 but they need to clear the pre-2004 ones with whatever national broadcaster still has the rights for them so hopefully Latvian TV want to help the euroqueens out!

Posted by: LexC May 2 2020, 06:43 PM

I’m thinking it may be 2000 or 2016

Bingo!

Posted by: AdamAloud May 9 2020, 03:58 PM

I'm thinking 1998 as that was held on 9th May and fits the other 2 clues as well?

Posted by: LexC May 9 2020, 04:09 PM

I think it's 2012 because that looks like a pixelated Loreen and that's got the most repeat entrants I can think of for any recent year (Zjelko, Jedward, Kaliopi, Greta Salome, Jonsi).

Posted by: J🐠hq May 9 2020, 05:01 PM

^ and Donny

I think it looks like the Baku Crystal Hall, but hosted by Terry and Ulrika mellow.gif

Posted by: LexC May 9 2020, 05:52 PM

I can believe that it is 1998 actually (like that’s believably an exterior shot of the NIA behind them)

Posted by: LexC May 9 2020, 06:12 PM

And 98 has Chiara, Edsilia, Koit Toome, Dana International and Danijela who entered more than once.

Posted by: AdamAloud May 9 2020, 06:49 PM

1998 confirmed!

Posted by: tommie May 9 2020, 07:09 PM

What were they screaming in the audience? British people are so rude. unsure.gif

Posted by: tommie May 9 2020, 07:17 PM

Yeees Greece - at first I thought it was another boring ballad after Croatia, but then came the key change. wub.gif

Watching these introduction segments without voice-overs is so odd. And Switzerland is another boring one? I want a cheesy 90s dance beat damn it!!! mad.gif mad.gif mad.gif

Posted by: tommie May 9 2020, 07:41 PM

Ooomph, oomph, oomph, no wonder Dana International won among this sad group of contestants - so far she's the only one who's sensible enough to bring a dance beat.

Posted by: tommie May 9 2020, 07:45 PM

OK, what the hell Germany. laugh.gif

Posted by: tommie May 9 2020, 08:15 PM

Ooof, what happened to UK serving up things like Imaani and Where Are You? At what point did UK just give up? unsure.gif

Posted by: LexC May 17 2020, 03:58 PM

This is running again tonight as a finale to what would have been Eurovision Week. The clues so far is that it hasn't appeared on the Eurovision channel before and it's in a coastal host city.

*prayer circle for Riga 2003*

Posted by: J🐠hq May 17 2020, 04:10 PM

Last week he referred to it as a 'VERY special contest'. No idea what that might mean, but Brighton fits the coastal city clue and would tie-in nicely with ABBA winning the "Come Together" show last night?

Posted by: diva thin muffin May 17 2020, 04:37 PM

Plot twist: it's Tel Aviv

Posted by: AdamAloud May 17 2020, 04:42 PM

He also tweeted about nothing 5 hours long as it's a school night so that with the other clues means 1974 is pretty likely imo.

Posted by: LexC May 17 2020, 04:44 PM

Nancy Drews on the case!

Posted by: AdamAloud May 17 2020, 06:54 PM

Have never seen the 1974 contest and aside from Sweden, Italy and the UK, I don't know any of the other entries so I'm quite excited for this!

Posted by: LexC May 17 2020, 09:09 PM

So obviously in 1974 Eurovision was in quite a different cultural space but other than Waterloo - Italy, Ireland and Netherlands were the big highlights!

Posted by: AdamAloud May 17 2020, 09:19 PM

Spain and Greece brought the bops too! Sweden and Italy the clear standouts of the year however.

Definitely need to visit the 70s and 80s over the summer, as I've only watched 1990 onwards.

Hopefully next week will be 2003 or 2008! (or 1999 but that's a long shot)

Posted by: Mack. May 17 2020, 11:09 PM

It was a great Eurovision evening. Much better than I had anticipated.

Posted by: LexC May 23 2020, 11:01 AM

Back on tonight and I’ve got a strong suspicion we’re going to Tallinn 2002!

Posted by: Martyn May 23 2020, 11:46 AM

I want 2003. Just for the car crash of the UK!

Posted by: LexC May 23 2020, 04:12 PM

Your weekly clues for the mystery year Nancy Drewing

Posted by: LexC May 23 2020, 04:17 PM

I initially thought that first clue was three things that make rain (water, sky and pressure) so "Rainmaker" ergo 2014 but that blurred picture doesn't scream 2014 to me...

Posted by: AdamAloud May 23 2020, 06:44 PM

RIGA 2003 THIS IS NOT A DRILL

Posted by: Colm May 23 2020, 06:53 PM

Also, Iki Dakika year *.*

I find that fascinating in a way that shows just how much Eurovision's changed over the years. If a similar error happened today with the cueing of the backing track going wrong, I highly doubt any artist/s would just look annoyed at each other and storm off stage until it gets fixed - they'd stay on stage, make a joke about it, get the audience to cheer them on for the second attempt etc. In 1990 not only was there no phone voting but the studio audience was entirely made up of VIPs and delegates with no public tickets available, so you're essentially watching a closed-off jury contest that just happens to have some cameras pointed at it - making Azúcar Moreno's grumpy reaction a little more understandable to modern eyes.

In the 2016 dress rehearsal, Iveta Mukuchyan's earpiece completely failed to work and despite looking a bit shaken and frantically gesturing backstage during the opening instrumental build, she still completed the song and cheerfully apologised to the audience afterwards - even though she was still virtually perfect despite the circumstances. Similarly SuRie still completed her performance two years later despite the infamous stage invasion making her miss out most of a chorus.

That makes sense - I think it's easy to forget how much the contest has changed over the years and yeah, that the audience was fall of VIPs and delegates makes their reaction more understandable. Still, it's funny to watch.

Posted by: Thom Xmas Kite Dec 15 2020, 12:13 PM

This weekend, 8PM CET. Very excited for it, although if Kate Ryan didn’t make it in for Belgium I’m gonna be mad.gif

Posted by: AdamAloud Dec 19 2020, 09:08 PM

Most of these choices are shocking, Zibbz over Vampires Are Alive really? If Kate Ryan and Silvia Night don't make it I swear to Conchita.

Posted by: LexC Dec 19 2020, 10:23 PM

Overall the choices were alright but 2008 being neglected entirely when Slovenia had a far better entry than what got picked for them. Expecting Verona to be called as the winner any minute now.

My PED (Post Eurovision Depression) came and went pretty quickly this year, however if you're still in need of a Eurovision fix, you're in luck as Season 3 of the best thing to come out of lockdown returns THIS SATURDAY!

It's 1969! I assume it'll be up for a week as per usual with these if you're unable to watch along live tonight.
