Me too as the Count arrives in Whitby, North Yorkshire on his way to cause havoc in London!
Russian ship the Demeter arrives with a motley crew including Count Dracula and 50 boxes of mouldering Transylvanian soil.

Well I loved this. I thought the dialogue was great, quite chilling yet also rather hilarious in places. Love the portrayal of both Dracula and Van Helsing, both really bringing the roles to life with a new sense of style and character.

Was that deliberate referencing of Inside Number 9 in tonight’s episode? Seemed too much of a reference to be accidental.
Edit - of course Mark Gatiss was part of a League of Gentlemen so it will have been deliberate |

Yep good. Just watching a Dracula doc on BBC2 and have learnt something. I didn't know Bram Stoker was Irish!

I'm really not sure what to think of this as a whole, it's certainly been a unique adaptation if somewhat disjointed and a bit lost in how many ideas it has. Reminds me a lot of American Horror Story in places and I feel like their take would be similar to this.
Van Helsing and Dracula's constant double act and exploration of Dracula's character has been really well done though and both actors were phenomenal, that's certainly been the most compelling aspect. |

I've only watched the first episode so far but I'm loving this, Dracula and Van Helsing are hilarious, yet it's actually quite spooky too! Looking forwards to binge watching the rest this weekend!

Eps 1 and 2 were great - I was glued to both episodes. The Van Helsing and Dracula scenes were really well done and gripping to watch.
Ep 3 just completely jumped the shark and it felt like they kinda shitted on the first two episodes

The second part was definitely the strongest and most consistent. Lots of interesting supporting characters and the non-mystery murder mystery was a really interesting angle, particularly as there was an actual mystery with what was inside no. 9.
I did enjoy the third part as a story and the whole thing of burial v cremation is weirdly a choice I often think about. Although it's clear what Moffat's views are considering he raised the same issue in the darkest ever Doctor Who moment! It was nice to see that concept expanded as Doctor Who was certainly not the right place for it. However, it didn't really fit as a Dracula story. I'd been excited going into the episode of them telling the Dracula story in a more modern day setting but the narrative they went with felt very removed from it all. The horror though was definitely the strongest in the final episode. Overall, I did enjoy it and it was certainly something very different from what I've seen before (both in terms of Dracula stories and just the tone of it). It was very camp at parts and the classic practical effects felt a bit jarring even though I know they were trying to replicate the storytelling of the past. Part of me would also like to see a consistent flowing narrative in a future Moffat/Gatiss story though. The flashback/starting in the middle of the story/jumping ahead and then going back style storytelling is becoming a bit familiar now. |
