BuzzJack Music Forum _ Robbie Williams and Take That _ The Girls

Thought we could do with a separate area for this!

As most are aware, The Girls, written by Gary and Tim Firth, and based on The Calendar Girls hits the West End on the 28th January 2017.

Tickets have gone on sale (initially) today, with Gary and Tim out and about promoting it. Links to the One Show and Radion2 below:

Thanks for the links Jay. I'm holding back from buying tickets until they release the date for FN so I can go to both musicals whilst on an overnight stay. They've kept most of the cast from the Leeds and Manchester runs and I understand they're very good.

I get the impression this is very, very important to Gary as he seems to have caught the musical theatre bug. I'd hazard a guess that he's more than a little nervous about the venture - but it's lovely to see him and Tim (who seems a charming and very talented man) together; they clearly have a strong relationship. The two producers also appear very committed to the show, not just financially, and there appears to be a great vibe around the team. Time will tell as to whether it's a success in the WE.

Some indication of TT stuff end of this year into 2017 but no word about Vegas.

You're welcome! They both come across really well in the interviews I think. I'm hoping we hear a couple more songs soon, but I would be surprised if Gary didn't promote it during Let It Shine

There's supposed a The Girls cast album this year or next year - really looking forward to it.
Tim and Gary are a good pair, just like Gary and Eliot.
I can't imagine what it's like to work for years for a project that you don't know whether will reach an audience or not.

My fear is that the "critics" don't start tearing the show apart like they did with FN. With FN too, the previews got great reviews, but, once it reached Broadway, for some reason, many of them did a u-turn.

It was nice to see, yesterday, that Mr B still has some selling power - after those few seconds clips of Let Me Go on Lorraine, the song reappeared on iTunes and it climbed in top 700. If a few seconds on a not so watched show can do that, imagine what the upcoming exposure can do for Gary and TT.

I absolutely love the FN songs they are so beautiful and some of Gary's best work. You're right in terms of critical acclaim for FN as during its run at the Art theatre it won a number of awards. Considering the awful Broadway reviews it lasted longer than I expected. There seemed to be a clear divide between critics and the general public. The audience were overwhelmingly positive about it and if I remember rightly it won two Broadway audience awards.

As for The Girls I think WE critics will be gunning for it because of Gary's involvement. However, Tim is very well respected so this may result in a more even handed approach. The previews were fantastic and couldn't have been much better. I did read one review which down played the musical aspect of the show stating that the songs were a back drop and didn't shine but that's the only one I can recall which was lukewarm in terms of the musical side.

I am looking forward to hearing this, i wonder is there even a slight possibility it will chart after the performance.

there'd have to be a digital version uploaded available to buy for it to chart. I, for one, would certainly love it.

PS: does anyone know if Dylan is ok, as she hasn't posted in a while?

Hopefully they have uploaded a digital version and it may do ok.

Fantastic performance!! Really enjoyed it!!

Loved it as well smile.gif

Some "people" don't seem to be getting the fact that the song belongs in a musical, though :/

Anyway, at the moment, my favorite song from the musical is Scarborough - that song gives me goosebumps.

Really enjoyed Dare and in general thats not the style of music i overly enjoy, the second half of the song really did it for me, id love to see this chart as it was a great performance.

Yeah, Gary really gave it some in the second half! Here's the link if anyone would like to view it (again!) https://youtu.be/w8QOKbYGnHs

It sounds like it could be on SISYL! Reminds me of Jump!

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever Nov 15 2016, 01:03 AM

Ya it would def fit in with the sound of SISYL era. Its a shame its not a fully fledged single.

Posted by: jay727 Nov 15 2016, 08:29 AM

I wonder if it'll come out as an album like FN?

Opening night last night and The Girls has got rave reviews! Every review I've read this morning, including from the Telegraph, Guardian etc have given it 4* plus!
