Tina is one of those characters that floats around but doesn't really add or take anything from any scene, i like tiffany but much preferred her when she was younger as she had much more comedy in her.

56. Vanessa Gold

Cameron 23 points

Vanessa Gold, portrayed by Zöe Lucker, first appeared in the episode broadcast on 4 June 2010. A "dynamic and assured" businesswoman, Vanessa was created by series consultant Simon Ashdown to be "a Zöe Lucker-type". Lucker accepted the role on a seven-episode contract, which was extended after she impressed the series producers with her performance. She departed on 6 October 2011, after the conclusion of her storylines.

Vanessa was introduced as a love interest for local car salesman Max Branning, intended to facilitate a reunion between Max and his former wife Tanya. Concurrent to their romance, which was extended to span Lucker's increased tenure, Vanessa separates from her husband Harry, and reveals that he is not the father of her teenage daughter Jodie. Lucker described Vanessa as a glamorous risk-taker, who does not fit into the soap's Albert Square setting.

54. Billy Mitchell

King Rollo 23 points

William “Billy” Mitchell, played by Perry Fenwick, made his first appearance on 2 November 1998. Billy was introduced by producer Matthew Robinson as a guest character facilitating the introduction of Jamie Mitchell to the show. In the storyline, Billy is Jamie's abusive uncle and guardian, and Jamie is taken away from Billy by his relative Phil Mitchell. Billy was brought back to the serial on 2 August 1999 and Fenwick was offered a longer-term contract, Billy becoming a regular character. His most prominent storylines include two failed marriages and having a daughter born with Down syndrome.

Billy's storylines have included being involved in criminal scams with his cousins Phil and Grant Mitchell respectively; working for Phil's archenemy Steve Owen; being blackmailed by Phil and Steve's common nemesis Dan Sullivan into getting leverage against them, which leads to Dan kidnapping their lover Mel Healy; his relationship with Janine Butcher; his marriage to Little Mo Slater, which contributes to their ordeal with her abusive husband Trevor and a subsequent incident where she is raped by Graham Foster before finding it hard to cope raising their son; a feud with local mobster Andy Hunter, which involves Billy and his friend Minty Peterson trying to stop Andy from marrying Phil and Grant's sister Sam; working for Andy's gangland successor Johnny Allen; his marriage to Honey Mitchell; working for gang lord Terry Bates; witnessing Terry murder his employee Jase Dyer and becoming the guardian of Jase's son, Jay Brown; a temporal relationship with Jean Slater; being reunited with his childhood girlfriend Julie Perkins, and discovering that their dead son has a daughter – Lola. 53. Beppe di Marco

Scene 10, Hide&Seek 14 = 24 points

Beppe di Marco, played by Scottish actor Michael Greco, made his first appearance on 29 January 1998.

The character, alongside his family, first arrived in Albert Square as a police officer who is depicted to be his family's pride and joy. His story arc commenced with Beppe becoming sworn enemies with the square's local hardman Grant Mitchell - up to the point where he develops romantic feelings towards Grant's estranged wife Tiffany; clashes with his older brother Phil; and forms a relationship with their younger sister Sam. Eventually, their feud culminates with Beppe being fired from the police force for attempting to frame Grant for Tiffany's murder - before he later witnesses Grant leaving the country upon learning that the latter faked his death from his criminal job with Phil.

Soon afterwards, Beppe proceeded to establish a business partnership with Phil and Grant's enemy Steve Owen - which subsequently contributes to the character's other storylines that involve seeking to rebuild his fatherhood; a custody battle with old lover Sandra over the well-being of their son Joe; exhibiting a minor STD condition; and its contribution to his romance with a local resident, Lynne Slater, that sparks the character becoming love rivals with her would-be husband Garry Hobbs.

After all his relationships end in disaster, Beppe ends up leaving the square for his mother's funeral, with his final scene airing on 4 June 2002.

I LOVED Vanessa Gold, although she was clearly only there temporarily to get in the way of a Max/Tanya reunion and Zoe Lucker was too good for that.

52. Sean Slater

AaronTM 7, Lukuzz 18 = 25 points

Sean Slater was created as an addition to the soap's existing Slater family - comprised initially of sister Stacey and mother Jean. He was first mentioned on 9 December 2005 when his sister, Stacey, unfolded a family picture to reveal a fourth member. It was first announced on 13 April 2006 that the character would be joining EastEnders in the coming months, with the revelation made that: "He's going to enter the Square with a bang and will be at the centre of some of the biggest storylines of the year." A month later, it was announced that Robert Kazinsky had been cast in the role of Sean. Kazinsky said of his casting: "I've grown up with EastEnders so I can't quite believe I'll soon be part of the Slater family."

Kazinsky was suspended from work for two months in 2007. It was announced on 18 January 2008 that he would be leaving the show and he made his final appearance on 1 January 2009. He returned for a brief stint on 26 April 2019 and departed again two weeks later.

51. Frank Butcher

King Rollo 19, Slick 8 = 27 points

Frank Butcher, played by Mike Reid, made his first appearance on-screen as a guest character in 1987, but due to a positive viewer reception, he was reintroduced in 1988 as a regular. Reid took a long hiatus from EastEnders in 1994 and Frank remained off-screen for over a year and a half. Frank made his return as a recurring character from December 1995 to January 1998 and eventually became a regular once again from May 1998 to November 2000, when Reid quit the show. Frank made three brief reappearances after that, the final one in December 2005. Given the widespread identification of Mike Reid as Frank, Reid's death in July 2007 led to BBC bosses deciding that it would not be possible for the character to return in the future. In November 2007, it was announced that the character would die off-screen and in April 2008 his funeral was screened as part of a special set of episodes, dubbed "Frank Week".

Frank is a wheeler-dealer who likes to think of himself as a "big player" in the business world, but in reality, he is little more than a wily conman. He is a smooth-talker and full of charm, but his actions are often thoughtless and he tends to run instead of facing up to his responsibilities, leaving his loved ones to pick up the pieces. His love affair with Pat Harris stems back to his teens, and he can never quite let her go, always breaking her heart, disappearing, and returning to break it all over again.

Frank remains one of EastEnders best-loved characters and many associate him with a 'golden era of the square'. Following Mike Reid's death in 2007, BBC series controller, John Yorke, commented "Frank Butcher was one of a select group of truly great EastEnders' characters and the skill with which Mike Reid played him made him one of the most popular and well-loved of all."

50. Sam Mitchell

Slick 2, Feel The Fever 1, Scene 25 = 28 points

Sam Mitchell (also Butcher and Hunter) was the third member of the Mitchell family to be introduced. Sam arrived as a 15-year-old school girl in July 1990, played by Danniella Westbrook. The actress quit in 1993, but Sam was reintroduced from 1995–96 and from 1999–2000. In both her 1996 and 2000 exits, Sam was written out earlier than the producers intended due to off-screen controversies surrounding Westbrook and her cocaine addiction. In early 2002, the character was reintroduced for a fourth time, but the role was recast to another actress, Kim Medcalf, who stayed in the role until late 2005. When executive producer Diederick Santer decided to reintroduce the character for a brief stint in 2009, he opted to bring Westbrook back. Sam resurfaced in September 2009 for a short stint and departed in January 2010, before then reappearing for another short stint from August until September that year. In 2016, Westbrook agreed to reprise the role once again in the events that surrounded the funeral for her on-screen mother Peggy Mitchell.

The character of Sam Mitchell was initially portrayed as a young, naive girl who had initially relied less upon her mother Peggy than her two older brothers Phil and Grant - although she gradually evolved into becoming more flirty, headstrong, and charismatic, with a determination to be taken more seriously. During her time in the soap, Sam established a teen elopement with her first husband Ricky Butcher; repeatedly clashed with his future spouse Bianca Jackson in light of the couple's divorce, and Sam thereafter sleeping with Bianca's father David Wicks; had an unsuccessful relationship with Grant's nemesis Beppe di Marco; slept with Phil's archenemy Steve Owen without knowing that it was part of his intent to make his wife Mel jealous; briefly dated Peggy's barman, Trevor Morgan, until she learned that he had been using this to antagonize her cousin Billy; temporarily worked for her brothers' estranged lover Sharon Watts and her half-brother Dennis Rickman; quarrelled with Phil's ex-wife Kate Morton; embarked on an ill-fated marriage with her community's gangland kingpin Andy Hunter; developed a conflict with Sharon and Dennis' family, the Watts, after their father Den blackmailed her lawyer Marcus Christie to con the Mitchells from their ownership of The Queen Victoria public house; feuded with Den's widow Chrissie after she incriminated both Sam and her friend, Zoe Slater for Den's murder; was manipulated by her uncle Archie into unknowingly causing their family to lose their pub for a second time; got framed by her own family for Archie's murder; sparked a rivalry with his two daughters, Ronnie and Roxy, over the trio's separate romances with their common boyfriend Jack Branning; struggled to cope with motherhood after giving birth to Jack's baby, Ricky; and attended her mother's funeral after losing her to cancer.

49. Aunt Babe

Hide&Seek 29 points

Babe Smith (also known as Aunt Babe) was portrayed by Annette Badland. She first appeared on 31 January 2014, and was introduced as the maternal aunt of established characters Shirley Carter and Tina Carter.

Babe's storylines have mostly revolved around her relationship with the Carter family, most notably the delicate relationship with her sister Sylvie Carter and the unrequited love for her brother-in-law Stan Carter. Babe's other storylines have included her past baby farming, encouraging Abi Branning to fake a pregnancy, blackmailing Les Coker and her subsequent feud with Claudette Hubbard, and being attacked by an unknown character who was later revealed to be Abi. She made her final appearance on 9 February 2017.

Daran Little wrote Babe's final episode and Badland said he "really relished and summed up what Babe was about." She added that she was "so grateful" for the storyline and described her departure episode as "complex, moving, wretched". She described Babe as "vengeful", "powerful" and "a bit of a witch". Badland expressed an interest in reprising the role and said a potential return had been allowed for, before adding that she believes Babe will return.

48. Carmel Kazemi

AaronTM 2, Cameron 22, JosephStyles 5 = 29 points

Carmel Kazemi, played by Bonnie Langford, made her first screen appearance on 26 May 2015. Of her casting, Langford said "I'm so thrilled and delighted to be part of EastEnders. I'm a great fan of the show and think the recent 30th Anniversary was sensational and shows just how good British television can be. To be part of this family is an absolute privilege." Carmel is Kush Kazemi's mother. Executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins described the character as being a loud and embarrassing "modern Essex divorcée who isn't quite ready to cut the apron strings". It was announced on 12 July 2018 that Langford would be leaving the role at the end of the year. Carmel departed on 5 November.

47. Whitney Dean

King Rollo 12, Scene 18 = 30 points

Whitney Dean (also Carter), played by Shona McGarty, is the ward of long-running character Bianca Jackson, and was introduced on 1 April 2008 when Palmer returned to the series after a six-year absence. Whitney is described by executive producer Diederick Santer as both an equal to, and younger version of Bianca, and is the oldest of Bianca's four children. Her storylines have revolved around her fractured family life, her sexual abuse by Bianca's partner Tony King, her sexual exploitation by Rob Grayson, failed relationships with Lee Carter, Woody Woodward and Callum "Halfway" Highway, falling in love with her father-in-law Mick Carter, enduring a miscarriage, being groomed and stalked by Tony's son Leo King and killing Leo in self defence.

The child sexual abuse storyline marks the first time the subject matter has been broached in a UK soap opera, and was researched and developed with advice and approval from the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. The inappropriate nature of Tony and Whitney's relationship resulted in over 200 complaints being made to the BBC and television regulatory body Ofcom by members of the public, and was described as "one of the darkest and most disturbing storylines EastEnders has ever attempted" by the Daily Mirror's Beth Neil. The NSPCC however have praised the storyline for "helping to raise awareness of the hidden nature of sexual abuse". The storyline also gained EastEnders a Royal Television Society Programme Award in March 2009 in the Soap and Continuing Drama category.

46. Patrick Trueman

King Rollo 9, Lukuzz 1, JosephStyles 8, HausofGhibli 12 = 30 points

Patrick Trueman, played by Rudolph Walker, was introduced by John Yorke as a replacement parental figure to the Trueman brothers, Anthony and Paul, following the departure of their mother, Audrey Trueman, who was killed off in September 2001. Patrick first appeared at Audrey's "rum-fuelled wake" as her estranged husband. His storylines include being the possible father of local resident Denise Fox, his marriage to Yolande Trueman, an affair with Pat Butcher, coping with the death of his adoptive son Paul Trueman, being assaulted by an unknown assailant in his own shop, coping when Ben Mitchell and his father Phil Mitchell begin a vendetta against him, a relationship with Cora Cross, being injured after falling from a ladder, suffering a stroke, a relationship with Claudette Hubbard and becoming embroiled in her feud with her son Vincent. On 2 August 2019, it was revealed that Patrick had married Sheree Trueman, with whom he has a son, Isaac Baptiste.

Walker was keen to play a comic element to the character; telling Larry Jaffee of Walford Gazette, "Before joining, I told the producer comedy is an area I would like to explore with the character because there was not enough of it in the show. Patrick treats a lot of things with a certain amount of humour. His way of escaping a problem is to find something funny to do or say or sometimes to get himself out of a tight corner. That’s really the sort of foundation. I try to put as much humour as possible into the character." Patrick is known for his trademark laugh, trilby hat and his catchphrase, "Yeah, man!"
