66. Peter Beale
Cameron 14 points Peter Beale and his twin sister Lucy are born in December 1993, to Ian and Cindy Beale. Peter is named after Ian's father, Pete Beale, who dies on the day Lucy and Peter are born, from a car accident with his girlfriend, Rose Chapman. The character has been played by seven actors. Francis Brittin-Snell portrayed the role from 1993 to 1996, followed by Alex Stevens from 1997 to 1998 and Joseph Shade from 1998 to 2004. James Martin took over and played the role from 2004 to 2006. He was played by Thomas Law from 2006 until 2010, when the character departed the series. In April 2013, it was announced that Peter would return, played by Ben Hardy who made his first appearance on 7 June 2013. Hardy announced his departure from the role in November 2014, making his final on-screen appearance on 24 February 2015. In December 2019, it was announced that the character would be returning, played by Dayle Hudson. Peter returned on 18 February 2020, during the show's 35th anniversary week. |

65. Nick Cotton
King Rollo 14 points Nick Cotton was played by John Altman on a semi-regular basis from the soap's debut episode on 19 February 1985. The character made numerous brief or more protracted stints until his onscreen death in February 2015; his death was written to coincide with the 30th anniversary of EastEnders. Nick Cotton is notably responsible for the death of Reg Cox, whose dead body is discovered in the very first scene of the programme in 1985. Nick's death was scripted as somewhat of a reenactment to Reg's death, as the character dies in the same spot where Reg had died 30 years prior. Nick's primary function is as an antagonist, a drug-user and a murderer. He was conceived by the show's creators, Tony Holland and Julia Smith. A late inclusion to the original cast line-up, Nick was included based on writer feedback to Holland and Smith's original script, which centred around the murder of Reg Cox, whose killer they had not originally intended to reveal. Nick was created to be the assailant and to provide the show with more dramatic storyline potential. Nick is used as an 'out and out villain'. It was suggested by executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins that unlike other soap characters who behaved badly and required a more nuanced characterisation and redemption, it was possible to use Nick as a complete "bad guy". A television critic for The Guardian suggested that, for this reason, the character's dastardly motives were rarely questioned by viewers, as his primary function is that of "an agent of chaos". It was also suggested that Nick's appearances on the show needed to be brief because the level of malevolence he portrays could not be sustained in a character over longer periods. Nick's most prominent relationship is with his mother Dot Cotton. It is portrayed as complex, dysfunctional and somewhat cyclical, with Nick perpetually entering his mother's life, her forgiving him for past misdemeanours (including an attempt to kill her to steal her bingo winnings), then being let down when Nick's true intentions are revealed, often ending in his banishment; albeit temporarily before the cycle repeats. Nick's eventual demise in 2015 plays homage to this relationship, with Dot – finally realising the extent of Nick's villainous behaviour and accepting his inability to change – ultimately deciding to allow Nick to die, rather than seeking medical assistance after he has a fatal reaction to heroin. Her motive being to let Jesus decide whether Nick should live or die. |

64. Keanu Taylor
Cameron 15 points Keanu Taylor, played by Danny Walters, first appears in the episode broadcast on 15 June 2017, along with his mother Karen and siblings Bernadette, Riley and Chatham. Of his casting, Walters said "Having only been filming EastEnders for a few weeks, I feel so privileged to already feel a part of the team. Everyone has been so friendly and kind and gone above and beyond to make us feel welcome and supported. There has been a huge buzz surrounding the new family and I am so excited to see what the future holds for The Taylors". Keanu is described as a "charming and happy-go-lucky lad who sees himself as the man of the family and tries to protect his siblings wherever possible." On 1 November 2019, it was announced that Walters had decided to leave the series and Keanu's last scenes aired on 3 January 2020. Not long after his departure, he was re-introduced for the 35th Anniversary plans. He returned on 7 February and departed again on 21 February. |

63. Ruby Allen
Lukuzz 8, JosephStyles 1, HausofGhibli 6 = 15 points Ruby Allen was played by Louisa Lytton from 18 March 2005 to 23 November 2006, and then from 18 September 2018 onwards. She was featured in storylines surrounding her gangland father Johnny Allen, with whom she shared a problematic relationship due to his criminal lifestyle. Other storylines included a close friendship with Stacey Slater, and an engagement to her brother Sean, which affected their friendship. In July 2006, Lytton was axed from the show due to limited possibilities for the character following her on-screen father's departure, and Ruby departed on 23 November 2006. Following Ruby's initial departure, Lytton had expressed a disappointment in her exit, but stated that she would always be grateful for the role. In July 2018, it was announced that producer John Yorke had decided to reintroduce the character. After a twelve-year hiatus, Ruby returned on 18 September to reunite with her best friend Stacey. Producers soon placed her at the centre of a sexual consent storyline, involving a special episode about the views surrounding consent. Lytton was nominated for two Digital Spy Reader Awards for the consent storyline, while Lytton and the storyline were praised by viewers and critics alike. |

61. Jack Branning
Lukuzz 16 points Jack Branning, played by Scott Maslen, made his first appearance on 29 October 2007. He is the youngest child of Jim and Reenie Branning and the brother of April Branning, Carol Jackson, Derek Branning, Suzy Branning and Max Branning. It was quickly established that Jack is a morally ambiguous character, with a murky past in the police force resulting in the paralysis of his young daughter. Maslen made an indefinite departure from the role on 15 October 2013 after six years on the show. Having turned down a chance to return to the role in April 2015, Jack made a return on 24 December 2015, before leaving once again on 1 January 2016. Maslen returned to filming during the same month and Jack returned on-screen on 1 March 2016. Since returning, his storylines have included reuniting with Ronnie Mitchell, gaining custody of his son Ricky Mitchell, finding out Ronnie has drowned on their wedding day and his subsequent grief over her death, a custody battle with Charlie Cotton over his stepson Matthew Mitchell Cotton, supporting his great-niece Tiffany Butcher over her rape and confronting her attacker, as well as rejoining the police force. |

60. Lucy Beale
Scene 16 points Lucy Beale was played by Eva Brittin-Snell (from 1993 to 1996), Casey Anne Rothery (from 1996 until 2004), Melissa Suffield (from 2004 to 2010), and Hetti Bywater (from 2012 to 2015). Lucy was introduced in December 1993 as the baby daughter of Ian and Cindy Beale and twin sister of Peter Beale. From 2004, when the role was recast to the older Suffield, storylines featuring Lucy focused upon her teenage rebellion. In 2010, Suffield left EastEnders, after she was allegedly axed due to "unruly behaviour." On 14 November 2011, it was announced Lucy would be returning in 2012 with Bywater taking over the role. Her storylines have included teenage pregnancy, abortion, cheating in her exams, struggling to cope when Ian has a mental breakdown and runs away, taking over Ian's businesses, and multiple relationships (including a relationship with her best friend's father, Max Branning). On 21 February 2014, it was announced that Lucy would be murdered, starting a dark chapter for the Beale family and a whodunnit storyline that would run until the show's 30th anniversary in February 2015 when the identity of the murderer would be revealed. The "Who Killed Lucy Beale?" storyline was billed as the soap's biggest whodunnit, and was EastEnders' biggest marketing campaign to date. Bywater returned in a flashback episode on 19 February 2015 to explore unanswered questions about the night Lucy died. The same episode revealed that Lucy's 10-year-old half-brother Bobby was her killer, after 10 months of secrecy regarding her demise. |

59. Rainie Cross
Cameron 17 points Lorraine "Rainie" Branning (also Cross) is played by Tanya Franks. Introduced as the drug-addicted sister of Tanya Branning, Franks has had three separate guest stints in 2007 (two episodes), 2008 (four episodes) and 2010 (seven episodes) and between 12 April and 8 December 2011. Rainie returned on 16 June 2014, when she was revealed as Ian Beale's mystery phone contact, having been with Ian on Good Friday, the night of Lucy Beale's murder but departed again not long after. In January 2015, it was confirmed that Rainie would return for the conclusion of the "Who Killed Lucy Beale?" storyline. Rainie made another guest appearance on 19 January 2018 and returned full-time to the show on 24 April 2018, now married to her former brother-in-law, Max Branning. Since her reintroduction, Rainie has joined Max in a custody battle with her mother Cora Cross and her sister Tanya over Max and Tanya's granddaughter Abi, has feuded with both Stuart Highway and Ben Mitchell and has kidnapped baby Abi. In 2019, the character was romantically paired with former nemesis Stuart. Rainie's other storylines have included a custody battle between Max and the Beale family over Abi, another drug relapse and her imprisonment for assault on Kathy Beale. Described as "the slightly broken sister who's one step away from a vodka bottle", Rainie's storylines have often centred on her addictions to drugs and alcohol. During her seven episode guest stint in 2010, Rainie was involved in a highly criticised crack cocaine storyline with Phil Mitchell. It was branded "inappropriate" and "horrid" by the Daily Record. EastEnders star Natalie Cassidy also criticised the storyline, saying she was "shocked", but Franks defended the storyline, though she herself was not surprised that viewers had complained. |

58. Tiffany Butcher
Scene 19 points Tiffany Butcher-Baker (also Dean and Butcher) has been played by Maisie Smith since 2008 when she was only six years old. Tiffany is the product of a one-night stand between Ricky Butcher and Bianca Jackson which was shown on their spin-off show Ricky & Bianca, set in Manchester in 2002. Shortly after leaving their son Liam with Ricky, Bianca began a relationship with a trucker named Nathan Dean, before discovering she was pregnant. Nathan died in a road accident when Bianca was heavily pregnant and she took on the responsibility of Nathan's daughter, Whitney Dean. She gave birth to Tiffany, whom she named after her deceased best friend Tiffany Mitchell, and raised her as Nathan's daughter and Whitney's half-sister, although she still remained uncertain about Tiffany's true paternity. Tiffany grew up believing Nathan was her father. Tiffany departed, alongside her half-brother Morgan Butcher and their mother Bianca, in September 2014. She made an appearance on 3 November 2016 when she and Morgan returned for Whitney Dean and Lee Carter's wedding. On 23 November 2017, it was announced that executive consultant John Yorke was to reintroduce the character, with Smith reprising her role as Tiffany full-time. She returned on 8 January 2018. Her storylines since her return have included her friendship with Bernadette Taylor, becoming a drug dealer, being groomed by Evie Steele, subsequently being raped and a relationship and later marriage with Keegan Baker. |

57. Tina Carter
Hide&Seek 21 points Tina Carter, portrayed by Luisa Bradshaw-White, first appeared on 18 November 2013, and was introduced as the sister of established character Shirley Carter. She was the first of a set of new characters that expanded the Carter family in 2013. The character was previously mentioned on-screen due to her daughter, Zsa Zsa Carter, appearing on the show in 2010. Tina's storylines mostly revolve around her relationship with her sister Shirley and same-sex relationships with Tosh Mackintosh, who physically abuses her, and Sonia Fowler, which ends when Sonia falls out of love with her. Tina also accidentally runs over Janet Mitchell and sleeps with Janet's father, Billy Mitchell. In a later storyline, Tina feuded with Stuart Highway when it was revealed that he drugged and attacked her when she was a teenager. |
