BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Friday Chart Predictions

Joel Corry & MNEK may make it 6 weeks at #1, or could Cardi B & Megan Thee Stallion snatch it? Headie One, AJ Tracey & Stormzy's collab Ain't It Different is on course for a top 5 debut, and expect big new entries for BTS with Dynamite and Clean Bandit, Mabel & 24kGoldn with Tick Tock. London Grammar also return with their new single Baby It's You

The Killers' Imploding The Mirage should become their sixth album to reach the #1 spot. Erasure's new album The Neon is among this week's releases, including Jamie Webster, The Waterboys, Bright Eyes, Blues Pills and Nas

Breakdown of the week
- Saturday: Some information may be posted on social media but it is likely to be missing most streaming data and is unrepresentative.
- Sunday: Official First Look Chart on Radio 1 from 6-7pm. Please do not post spoilers on the forum in advance as this ruins the countdown for any listeners.
- Monday: OCC Top 100 from 5:45pm
- Tuesday: Top 40 update as and when we receive them with requests, this is NOT 100% guaranteed however. The OCC may publish sales flashes of their own accord but likewise, this is not guaranteed. Twitter and social media is your friend for today. Please post any information you find with a source. Do not nag for updates, we will post a top 40 update if we receive one.
- Wednesday: Top 40 update from Music Week from 5:45, and potential top 5 sales but this is not guaranteed.
- Thursday: See Tuesday.

Other notes (please read)
- You may make requests Tuesday to Thursday but outside the top 40, specific positions will not be revealed (unless deemed necessary by a mod).
- Please do not demand a midweek update, one will be posted as and when we receive the information. Patience is a virtue.
- Sales information will be given out as deemed necessary by a moderator, please bear this in mind when making requests. Most requests for sales will be ignored. Any chart requests between No. 41 to 100 will not be answered after Monday's update.

Anyone released physical singles this week? laugh.gif

Posted by: Nick Jonas 23rd August 2020, 01:25 PM

WAP at #1 then biggrin.gif

Posted by: dan-G 23rd August 2020, 01:26 PM

is there another physical release no one here knows about a la Joy Division/Gareth Malone?

or maybe BTS are number one thanks to multibuying.

BTS at 1 100%

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 23rd August 2020, 01:32 PM

Yeah I'm inclined to go with BTS at #1, and I'd be happy for it to stay there! They're releasing 2 more versions tomorrow, so that will help a lot.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 23rd August 2020, 01:48 PM

As much as I like them, it's strange to me how much some people spend on their music though - do massive groups need to have "donations" to buy their singles?

Posted by: Mart!n 23rd August 2020, 01:48 PM

Usually I take the First Look Chart with a pinch of salt laugh.gif If it is BTS unsure.gif I'll be more inclined they will drop once the missing weekend data is added. unsure.gif happy.gif

Posted by: Sour Candy 23rd August 2020, 01:50 PM

How would BTS or Cardi at #1 "raise eyebrows" lol

BTS have great sales and Cardi has huge hit right now.

exactly what i'm thinking laugh.gif it has to be something a bit weirder than a mega-popular boyband being #1

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 23rd August 2020, 01:56 PM

I reckon it'll be Ronan Keating

(Westlife's very own)

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 23rd August 2020, 01:57 PM

OH it might actually be Snow Patrol? They've just released a 5-track EP for charity

Posted by: Bjork 23rd August 2020, 02:01 PM

BTS being #1 today (but not Friday) is totally expected if anyone looks at the iTunes data

BTS fans raising money and massive buying the song sounds 100% illegal and should be banned

Posted by: Sour Candy 23rd August 2020, 02:08 PM

LOL what's your problem with BTS biggrin.gif

They have two number one albums. They ARE popular. Get over it!

Posted by: M4NGO 23rd August 2020, 02:38 PM

It's got to be BTS surely

5 people buying 1,000 copies each, doesn't make them popular.

Only on Buzzjack could someone argue that BTS aren't popular

Posted by: Sour Candy 23rd August 2020, 02:46 PM

Even my mother knows BTS and she's 65

They have also sold out Wembley Stadium twice.

Posted by: Mack. 23rd August 2020, 03:18 PM

The Modern are watching, BTS..... Regarding multiple copies..

Posted by: dan-G 23rd August 2020, 03:22 PM

Even if BTS are #1 tonight (which seems feasible with good download sales + missing streaming data) they'll most likely be out of the top five by Friday anyhow. It does make sense that Dynamite is doing better than previous singles considering it's fully in English too.

It would if it was eligible for the albums chart, but I'm not sure? It might do a Noel Gallagher and not be eligible for either

(Fwiw, Snow Patrol's EP is 18 minutes long)

Posted by: Supercell 23rd August 2020, 03:26 PM

Whilst they might be popular, fans getting people to donate money to buy their single is a whole new level of desperation. Actually surprised to see they've never made the top 10 over here, I thought they had done but must be getting it confused with the U.S.

Anyway I can't see them being top 10 by the end of the week, I think it'll be a close fight between WAP and HAH.

Posted by: RobBot 23rd August 2020, 03:30 PM

I reckon the #1 is gonna be River by Ellie Goulding.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 23rd August 2020, 03:31 PM

Well this isn’t particularly ‘eyebrow raising’ yet! I’m pretty sure it will be BTS at number 1 too.

I was hoping for this to get to the top 10 today.

Posted by: Bré 23rd August 2020, 05:15 PM

Let's be honest, James Masterton would probably consider it 'eyebrow raising' for BTS to even be like #3 let alone #1. Y'all are reading too much into it. x

-prepares egg for face if the #1 turns out to be some random old song with a physical release no one knew about-

what's not ok is having an organisation collecting funds and then mass-buying

Fair enough but it just seems a bit cheap imo but obviously everyone’s entitled to their own opinion. We can agree on the first Nicki remix being trash tho.

The eyebrow-raising moment has nothing to do with the song being at #1. It's the fact that this is a Korean boyband being at #1. Xenophobia is real ladies~

I think this would've been a better clickbait: "a foreign boyband, xxx song by two female rappers and a queer guy are in the Top 3. and only one act is fully british! eyebrows will be raised for several reasons".

OCC says,
Dynamite notched up 1.7 million streams in its first 48 hours, and is currently 1,700 chart sales ahead of Joel Corry & MNEK’s five-week chart-topper Head & Heart. As things stand, Dynamite could be BTS’ first Official UK Number 1 single, or their first UK Top 10.

Not sure the OCC are that bothered? The fans have done this for every UK release so far plus set up multiple accounts to stream on loop via playlists etc., - overall the impact whilst there will be some is minimal in the grand scheme of things

I don't know if what they are doing is entirely within the chart rules, however, it does come across as extremely desperate and, you know, UTTERLY INSANE. No wonder K-pop fans have not a very good reputation online in non-KPop circles (at least from what I'm seeing).

Like already mentioned, 1000 people buying something 10-50 times each doesn't represent the actual popularity of a song/album. Same shit with the 20 cassette/CD bundle releases. It's called taking advantage of hardcore fans.

but one thing is a fan multi-buying, I can totally understand it, sure thats' been done a million times
and that's fine if you go and buy the pink cassette and then the golden cassette and then the rainbow cassette

but here there is an organisation collecting money and then buying for others,
you don't have to spend any $, they buy it for you,, that's what's wrong imho

Posted by: Thom Femenerkay 24th August 2020, 11:58 AM

BUT it’s the fans are doing it. Yes it’s crazy, but it’s not chart rigging either, because the people paying are the fans not the record company.

Personally I’m all for it, it’s a long time since the UK chart meant this much to anyone, even if the song is pretty mediocre.

43k already is a surprise, didn’t think they’d even do that much for the week.

looks like we can all collectively unroll our eyebrows now too tongue.gif ...not that I ever expected BTS would have a chance at staying number one, but they should at least get their first top ten which would be welcome seeing as this is one of the better songs I’ve heard from them.

pleased that Clean Bandit are looking to at least go top 40 this week and I expect they’ll climb to the top ten soon enough too. also quite like that new Headie One song so would be here for that remaining top five.

It wouldn’t be as bad for me if Mabel had released a deluxe edition of her album on CD with all these songs on. But to multiple times now add extra tracks on one by one just doesn’t feel right.

If she can do that then Ariana should’ve done the same with thank u, next and added boyfriend (her song boyfriend as they both have one laugh.gif), Don’t Call Me Angel, Stuck with U and Rain on Me

Posted by: Bjork 24th August 2020, 05:19 PM

But this is making the album charts a mockery

If you look at which albums have been streamed the most on Apple, proper streams not playlists,
Mabel is not top 1500... while for instance NAS is #4

but then who's above who on the album charts?

Mabel should be in the playlist charts not the album charts

it's just wrong that the #4th most streamed album is beaten by an album not even top 1500

Mabel is not top 1500... while for instance NAS is #4

but then who's above who on the album charts?

Mabel should be in the playlist charts not the album charts

it's just wrong that the #4th most streamed album is beaten by an album not even top 1500

I fully agree with all of this. The album charts should be what albums as whole albums are being streamed as a whole and not dictated by playlists. There’s loads of albums in the albums charts what should be way lower if they done the charts fairly and other albums what should be way higher. It’s got worse much lately sad.gif

So James Dean Bradfield is only just top 90 midweek when he was number 3 for last week. Would this be the biggest drop from such a height or has there been a bigger drop than this?

Sleaford Mods - All That Glue went 1-OUT on the same measure earlier this year.

Fantastic sales for The Killers! Would be great if they can actually top the debut of their previous album.

#3 was his midweek position, he was #6 at the end of the week last week.

These kind of drops are very commonplace these days for fanbase acts. It can really only be a matter of time before we see a #1 album get this kind of second week drop (we have had 2 #2 albums this year (Sports Team and The Streets) that dropped well outside the top 40 in their second week)

Posted by: Steve201 24th August 2020, 06:34 PM

Didn't expect The Killers to break 40k sales all week never mind by Monday, fantastic stuff and they are a Radio 2 band now as well.

If their vinyl was available they would be on for 65-70k opening and mostly from cds I imagine as the singles aren't setting the Spotify charts alight.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 24th August 2020, 06:37 PM

^not sure about how many sales it translates to, but it's been #1 on Apple Music since release (just dropped to #2 earlier)

What I found more eye opening from that article is how massively moderated down Ariana’s streams were for 7 rings. BTS’s streams being lowered isn’t really a surprise and if it allows Mariah to keep the record, I’m all in favour of it.

To be fair that article is only saying that the Spotify algorithm subtracted 1/3 of their streams due to their charts capping the number of streams any individual can contribute in 24 hours, that's not necessarily anything nefarious, just a sign that BTS fans listen to their music an ungodly amount on their release days.

If Erasure maintain a Top 5 position it will be their first since 1992 although they came close in 2017 with World Be Gone which achieved a Number 6 debut.

What are the killers projected to sell for the week, I wonder is 60k possible?

Posted by: Bré 24th August 2020, 11:42 PM

The Killers are 3.3k ahead of what Gaga had in the Monday midweek of her release date and their sales are likely to be more frontloaded than hers since they don't have nearly as much streaming presence - I think they'll end up having a pretty similar opening week to Gaga (so around the low 50s) unless there's something coming to significantly boost their sales.

Looks like they'd have easily got the biggest first week sales of the year by a comfortable margin if their vinyl release had been this week, and they still might get it even without that!

(BTW I'm pretty sure The Killers were never scheduled to release the same week as Gaga, that was Gerry Cinnamon wasn't it? A Killers vs. Gaga chart week would have been pretty interesting looking at these numbers though!)

It's apparently something Polydor does to 'create album stories' for artists who wouldn't otherwise have them.

To be fair she's only between album one and two so this success may give her the opportunity to show more artistic abilities in the future.

Where does it stop though? I mean it's fine to add whatever to whatever (who am I to tell them it's wrong~) but I won't call that an album. Compilation, greatest hits, everything including a kitchen sink.

Also you can make good sounding music on your iPhone these days so lack of money doesn't quite work as an excuse for me. As an example, iamamiwhoami also struggled big time but their music spoke for itself and they found bigger commercial success in the end after 3 whole albums.

Becky Hill, Mabel, Sigala, Jonas Blue etc., never would have had certified album if it wasn’t for track adding and stream placement.

Mabel and Becky Hill could both achieve a few weeks but nothing like either of them have experienced - can’t blame the record company for taking advantage I guess and creating ‘gold selling’ album acts

I think these acts like Becky, Sigala, Jax Jones etc will fade away very soon anyway so this is their only chance to really have some success on album chart.

Posted by: dj_tim_e 25th August 2020, 12:13 PM

The Killers delaying the vinyl release is quite a clever tactic to keep the album in the upper reaches of the chart a while longer than they probably would have achieved otherwise. I won't buy the CD but I may buy the vinyl and in the mean time I'm streaming it. Well done, Island Records!

I was expecting also WAP and H&H to be very close with WAP slightly ahead, so this is surprising

but I've noticed with other urban songs like The Box that they get less streams than the Spotify numbers suggests
which I think means that more people stream them for free,
so might be the case for WAP vs Joel Corry, WAP might have a higher proportion of free streams than Joel

It genuinely wouldn't surprise me if she tacked her second album lead onto High Expectations as well :') It doesn't affect my enjoyment of her as an artist as I'm sure it's label driven and artificial chart runs are hardly a massive deal in 2020, but meh it's just annoying lmao.

What I would do with the albums chart is that instead of the 12-track rule, all songs that are registered as singles would be counted out of the album streaming total. This would actually show who's listening to the album. I know sales would dive-bomb but I'm sure they could fiddle with the ratio or something ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah I agree with this, it’s weird to see the lower half of the albums chart clogged up with old albums like Teenage Dream (nothing against Katy lol just thought it was random to see it back in the charts) just because they had a lot of hits that are still streamed. I didn’t mind but feels a bit unfair when an artist I like (JoJo, Brandy) misses out on a chart entry

Posted by: JosephStyles 25th August 2020, 05:05 PM

The US album streaming situation is even worse. They don't downgrade the top 2 songs, so 1 hit single can hugely inflate the parent album even if there's no actual interest in the full thing. Our situation is way better (and the US are not immune to situations like Mabel's album either so that problem isn't solved).

The US also doesn't stop at just the top 10 tracks, leading to egregious cases of extremely bloated albums just because making an album that's impossible to sit through statistically generates more streams.

Troye Sivan still being top 15 at this point is encouraging, even if it is an EP, given that the songs released did absolutely nothing. I was concerned it wouldn't even make the top 40! It's a solid EP though, good on him.

Wow at Vera Lynn being #25
Weird request I know, but based on today’s update, how likely is it that Perfect will be top 50 on Friday?

Posted by: ben08 26th August 2020, 02:39 PM

Latest update.
25 Vera Lynn - Land of Hope and Glory

Wow!!!

On the Amazon sales chart Vera Lynn is at no. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, and 12.

It's also at nos. 1, 2 and 12 on iTunes

Posted by: Hallucinate 26th August 2020, 02:49 PM

Is Hallucinate back in the top 40 today?

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 26th August 2020, 02:50 PM

Crikey, could Vera even make the top 10 by Friday?

Posted by: dan-G 26th August 2020, 02:53 PM

didn't expect Vera to get that high even with her big iTunes lead. shame about why she's charting but it does feel somewhat appropriate for her to have a top 40 hit this year given We'll Meet Again made the top 75 on two separate occasions.

I expect R1 will only play a snippet of the song on the chart show anyway.

Posted by: JulianT 26th August 2020, 02:58 PM

I'd guess Vera's on around 10k which means she could make the Top 10 with 2 more days around the same level.

Cardi finally gaining on Joel...probably too late for this week but makes her favourite for next.

As quite a lot of data is missing Joel's sales might actually be pretty close to last week's - would be good if he could avoid a decline.

Posted by: Bjork 26th August 2020, 03:12 PM

^theres the usual amount of missing data

incredible for Vera Lynne

Similar data was missing last week and it's looking like Joel will decline based on current mid data. As it is we are set for a bloodbath of ACR victims in a fortnight, unless we get unexpected good weather next week - almost everything on DCL-1 (see Joseph's thread) is declining.

The Killers sold only just over 1,000 copies yesterday? ohmy.gif must be one of the most front loaded albums we've had for ages! Probably won't even open with 50k now which is a shame.

Sold 1.7k which is perfectly fine.

Correct, just over 10k. #10 is just under 17k.

Going by the figures for the week it looks like it could be neck-and-neck, but I imagine a load of streams will get added later in the week which will push Taylor ahead.

Well... happy to see Vera Lynn coming to finally have another top 40 hit I guess. Sad that it's for such a bullshit reason though. x

Nice to see WAP slightly closing the gap on H&H. It should hopefully dethrone it from #1 next week

Kinda sad that this false controversy will get Vera a bigger hit than the duet with Katherine Jenkins earlier this year, which was released when she was still alive.

and still selling well on iTunes

I feel like WAP is just gonna miss out on the #1 this week
Hopefully Mood can sneak into the top 10 though

Posted by: JulianT 27th August 2020, 02:06 PM

Looks like Vera might end up around #12 - I don't think she's put on the full 9 or 10k that she'd have needed both yesterday and today to break the Top 10.

Calvin Harris & The Weeknd COULD do it, I guess, depends on the song (I have a feeling it'll be more of a slow-jam - and slow-burner - than an instant pop hit).

Posted by: dan-G 27th August 2020, 04:01 PM

I wouldn’t rule Calvin out but I think he’s more likely to not peak in week one given the performance of his last few major commercial releases so number one is probably Cardi’s next week, unless Drake surprise drops his album and that has some big single they instantly push.

Posted by: Cognizant 27th August 2020, 04:17 PM

With the weather getting drearier by the day, Head & Heart will continue to lose streams; WAP is all but guaranteed to be number one next unless Calvin/Weeknd have a massive debut...

I wonder what KP’s Smile will debut with?

Posted by: gavindeejay 27th August 2020, 04:21 PM

Happy to see The Killer should break the 50k mark tomorrow smile.gif

Calvin/Weeknd I think will debut at #1.

Posted by: JosephStyles 27th August 2020, 04:50 PM

I've not heard the Calvin & Weeknd song yet but it'd be impressive if it debuted at #1, considering even One Kiss didn't manage that (it debuted at #3, Promises at #4, Giant at #7). I'd say it's more likely to debut top 5 and potentially climb to #1 but I could very easily be wrong on that.

Posted by: LJ JORD 7 27th August 2020, 04:53 PM

I can see Calvin / Weeknd debuting at #3.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it climbed to #1 though but to debut there idk it’s not totally impossible though.

Calvin/Weeknd I think will debut at #1.

But how can you possibly make that prediction without hearing the song?!

Posted by: JosephStyles 27th August 2020, 05:02 PM

Calvin first week sales:

49,091 One Kiss [just under 2k off Drake at #1, 51,187]
41,407 Promises [over 12k off George Ezra at #1, 53,892]
32,933 Giant [38k off Ava Max at #1, 70,721]

Cardi sold 51k last week and will end up higher in tomorrow's chart. She's the front-runner going into next week. I think it'd be a tough ask to beat her going by Calvin's past few proper singles!

Just heard the new Calvin/Weeknd track and it doesn’t sound like a HUGE hit like One Kiss or Promises was; its funky and slightly subdued but I don’t see this reaching the top.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 27th August 2020, 06:25 PM

As it stands the Killers start off and end the top 40.

Posted by: coi 27th August 2020, 08:12 PM

BTS are still pretty high even this late in the week, looks like a major improvement on their previous singles chart performances! Hopefully Mood manages to enter in the top ten, and nice to see Vera Lynn finally set to make the top 40 this time around, although it's a pity that it's this time rather than either of her previous two top 100 appearances this year. Impressive sales for The Killers too in the albums!
