Big announcement coming from the original Ginger Spice of pop tomorrow morning at 9am with Dan Wootton on Lorraine. It's widely expected to be the announcement of her first single in 12 years:

First UK single I should hasten to add biggrin.gif She's Tweeted a picture of her in a "Choose Life" T-shirt which has led many to think this will be a cover of George Michael as a tribute!

What makes her think anyone's going to care, realistically?

I've revisited Geri's solo canon since her BBC2 documentary about the 90s earlier in the year. The likes of "Look at Me", "Mi Chico Latino" and "Bag It Up" are still great pop singles and were very of their moment.

But I'm with you on "Ride It" Jonjo. Everything about that and her last album smacked of a woman so far removed from reality she suddenly wasn't a weird but relatable livewire like she was anymore. I think being a mum and getting married in the time has mellowed her since. She's still a good laugh and good to see interviewed.

Geri's singles rank;

1. Mi Chico Latino
2. Bag It Up
3. Calling
4. Lift Me Up
5. Look At Me
6. It's Raining Men
7. Scream If You Wanna Go Faster
8. Ride It
9. Desire

Passion has Love Never Loved Me though, one of her ultimate highlights. wub.gif

Ride It is fun! I'd say amongst her ardent fan base it's one of her most liked singles actually, behind Look at Me, Mi Chico Latino & Bag It Up.

YES. THIS.

It's called "Angels In Chains". The track will be out on June 23 and all the proceeds are going to Childline.

Ginger Spice will release her track "Angels In Chains" on June 23, two days before what would have been George's 54th birthday.

Bag It Up was wonderful, especially the video with her in charge!

Posted by: pippa 12th June 2017, 01:45 PM

I cant foresee this doing much in the charts at all unless she goes all out on the promotion trail. Even with that, i cant see it charting higher than low top 75.

Geri's solo material never equated with me, some of her songs were catchy but i found them very annoying after little to no time.

Judging by the previews, I don't think I'm going to be too keen on Angels in Chains... but it's nice that she felt inspired to write a tribute for George Michael & that she's donating the proceeds to Childline (a charity close to George's heart).

It's being released via East West Records UK (Warner).

Artwork:

It's unclear at this point whether she'll be going by Geri Halliwell or Geri Horner!

She's performing at G-A-Y the day after the single release, but she's just billed as "Geri" for it: https://s9.postimg.org/tsb5txavh/DCG_U_2_Xc_AAg1_KC.jpg

Posted by: ThePensmith 13th June 2017, 06:04 AM

The single artwork's really nice. I agree that it wouldn't make sense her trying to be the solo artist she was back then now. EastWest are pretty safe hands anyway, they did The Corrs and Busted's most recent albums.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 13th June 2017, 06:34 AM

'Desire' is so underrated. sad.gif

When I think about it, the only one I truly hated was her abominable cover of 'It's Raining Men'.

He is reet tbh about worst solo material ... after Emma Bunton of course.

However, her songs are classic 90s moments and Ride It is an absolute JAM - loved it at the time and still do. Quirky and strange but a lot of fun. One of her best!

Oh god, I love Geri but she was good when she was doing her talk-sing pop stuff to cover her lack of vocal ability.
Hearing those three obviously very talented singers and then her piping up is kind of embarrassing for her, even with all things considered.

It's nice that she's doing this for charity but I don't think it'll make much money for it in the long run. She'd have been better off doing a book or something.

Posted by: Jay ☆ 14th June 2017, 03:21 AM

This can be pre-ordered on iTunes, and she's going with "Halliwell" for this release. heart.gif

Posted by: Jade 14th June 2017, 03:39 AM

The atrocity that was 'Half of Me' still haunts me so yesss Geri, let's move on from that kink.gif This is a lovely thing of her to do.

My Geri singles rank:

01) Mi Chico Latino
02) Calling
03) Desire
04) Look at Me
05) Ride It
06) Scream If You Wanna Go Faster
07) It's Raining Men
08) Bag It Up
09) Lift Me Up
10) Half of Me

'Mi Chico Latino' is comfortably her best for me and one of the very best solo Spice songs ('Never Be The Same Again' >>>> ofc)! Then 'Calling' was also a surprisingly striking slower moment from her too! 'Desire' is SO underrated, a shame that flopped so much. I like them all down to 'It's Raining Men', but then 'Bag It Up' never did much for me, her voice on 'Lift Me Up' (particularly the final chorus) is rather painful and 'Half of Me' was just totally a wtf moment :')

Posted by: ThePensmith 14th June 2017, 05:18 PM

Release date now bought forward to this Monday, 19th June, where it will receive it's first play on (and I kid you not) Chris Evans' Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2. It quite literally is 1999 all over again! biggrin.gif

Now available to hear on Spotify!

Posted by: Regina 19th June 2017, 01:24 PM

I really like this. It's a more mature Geri, but still has her stamp on it. Love a good gospel twang too.

#21 on iTunes!

Really didn't know what to expect from this. Surprisingly moving and lovely. Very fitting tribute to George. And dare I say it the best she has sounded on a slower number.

I think the song is a grower, love the video. Captures the song well.

Posted by: Good Old Days 22nd June 2017, 12:45 PM

Very late release. This song could be UK top 40 hit in January, after George's death.
Now this tribute in the shadows of two charity singles.

Debuted at #63 on Sales Chart. Nowhere to be seen on main one of course. I believe she's performing at G-A-Y tonight?

Posted by: Jay ☆ 25th June 2017, 09:11 AM

^ She's #63 in the downloads chart, but #65 in the sales chart. I doubt this'll be quite enough for her to have made the Top 200, sadly!

Posted by: ThePensmith 26th June 2017, 01:37 PM

Chatting and performing on The One Show tonight, and then on Loose Women on Wednesday. I've just seen a live video of her set at G-A-Y on YouTube. She did the single, Look at Me, Raining Men and Freedom. Was quite understated by her standards so will be interesting to see what she pulls off tonight!

Posted by: ___∆___ 29th June 2017, 07:58 PM

Iv always been a spice boy/Geri fan and it's painful to read all the comments about Geri - she's been slaughtered online for this release and really seems to be disliked by the general public.

Her performance on 'The One Show' didn't even push AIC back into the iTunes Top 100 - maybe she needs to do a Steps and release a camp, fun pop album

Posted by: Jonjo 29th June 2017, 09:57 PM

Or maybe she just shouldn't release anything at all! biggrin.gif

Semi-kidding. kink.gif She's definitely my least fave of the solo Spices </3

Posted by: ThePensmith 30th June 2017, 07:16 PM

I think it's clear she's aiming to be a much different artist from the one she was in 1999. She's even said as much in the interviews promoting this. I never heard any of the "Man on the Mountain" album that leaked last year but I'd be interested to.

Posted by: iTsound 9th September 2017, 04:36 PM

The first time that I heard "Angels in chains" I thought, well this is really poor for a years comeback, but I must say that currently I fell in love with the song. Sometimes brings me back to "Calling" era. The more I listen to it, the more I like it.

Love and Light, Man on the Mountain and Without Love are quite nice/heartwarming, even though the vocals and production are quite rough. The rest of the tracks are pretty lame.

I really was not impressed with the song at all in the beginning, however it has really grown on me and I find it quite sweet now. Problem is Geri needs songs that are instantly catchy as no-one is really willing to give her a chance hence a grower is a non-event.

Thanks for sharing. I haven't actually seen that video before.

And yes. I still love Angels in Chains too. I don't share the ire many do for Half of Me. I think it's 'fine'...but it wasn't worthy of being a comeback for her after so long. But I don't think the same about Angels in Chains. I actually think it was an excellent reintroduction to Geri...that's worthy of her singles run.

I wouldn't necessarily call Angels in Chains the best thing she recorded in that era. That's probably Love and Light. But I *do* think AIC was the best choice for a comeback. I thought she was very genuine in her intentions, the song is quite pretty, and recruiting George Michael's backup singers was an excellent call.

I just wish it had led to a little album release. We don't know what exactly happened behind the scenes...but her story about how the music couldn't be released because of a leak is...bizarre to me. Lots of albums leak. It's no reason to just toss it all. Granted, I realize there are probably greater commercial concerns that had more to do with the album never getting out there. But it is a shame. A lot of the material was too strong to never be put out there officially...and she clearly poured her heart into it. And poor Eliot Kennedy. Another Spice working with him and never releasing the music...just the same as the four piece group, Victoria solo, and GEM.

Posted by: sammy01 1st August 2020, 08:13 PM

This is still the most ridiculous solo Spice release and somehow a label backed it!

When you haven't released a song in the UK in a decade and are know for fun gay songs you decide your comeback single is a ballad ode to a dead singer who she clearly wasn't close to the last few years.

Who on earth was going to buy it? George fans I'm sure saw this as her trying for attention off him and Geri fans really didn't want this. Maybe her heart was in the right place but no one's head was actually thinking will this sell.

Posted by: JosephStyles 1st August 2020, 08:22 PM

To be fair, I don't think she stood much of a chance with anything she released at that point.

Posted by: Spiceboy 1st August 2020, 10:33 PM

Let's be honest none of the girls are going to chart ever again on the singles chart unless they manage to get a feature on a single with a big artist. Emma couldn't do it with a pretty fantastic comeback single in BPDS, Melanie hasn't been able to do it with 3 brilliant recent singles, Geri could have released the best song of all time she was never going to chart.

I get what you're saying, but the release did make sense to me. To me, the two of them have enough of a link in pop culture that a tribute song was appropriate. I'd agree a lot of George fans probably don't care for solo Geri (he's just got a deeper catalogue of songs and a greater mass appeal). But I'd venture to say most Geri fans also like George. I know I certainly do. She'd spoken about their friendship starting in the Spice days and kept at it throughout her career. She famously lived with him after splitting from the group. I would have found it bizarre and desperate for her to pen a song about Prince, for example. But George Michael? There was enough of a background there. I thought the song was genuine. And in my understanding of the situation...George wasn't really close to much of anyone in those last years.

Could she have made a bit more of a ripple with a different song? Maybe. I'm not sure the Geri of the past several years has the confidence to pull off another Bag It Up...though I think some of her unreleased material has flashes of the quirk that defines her. Like I mentioned before, I think Love and Light was the strongest thing she had in her arsenal. Could that have at least won her some of the better critical reviews of her career? Who knows. But I do think Angels in Chains was a sweet song, and she came off well in the interviews surrounding it.
