Chart Commentary

As CNCO madness subsides, Sólo Yo is knocked off the top spot by not one, but four songs in the same week. Leading the pack is Ariana Grande who, despite strong competition from other chart veterans, had absolutely no struggle in achieving the #1 spot. No Tears Left to Cry is the first single from her fourth studio album, and the first since the Manchester tragedy last year, which sent One Last Time up to #1 belatedly. No Tears Left to Cry is her sixth #1 in all, achieved over a four year period beginning with Problem in 2014. It's her tenth top 10 hit in all, and she's achieved a top 10 in my chart every year since 2013 (with One Last Time counting for 2017, as it previously peaked at #13 before its resurgence).

British pop sensation Anne-Marie has had unprecedented success in my chart since Alarm debuted at #3 in 2016. She's so far achieved four #1 singles, starting with Rockabye later that year and most recently FRIENDS, which drops three spots to #23 this week. 2002 doesn't add to the tally but continues her run of top 3 hits, becoming her seventh top 3 hit out of a possible eight top 40s. Either Way is the only one to break the streak, and it's the only top 40 hit not to feature on her debut album Speak Your Mind (new at #3 in the album chart on one day alone, expect it to be #1 next week very easily).

They broke their run of thirteen consecutive #1 singles this year with Danny Avila collaboration Too Good to Be True, and now The Vamps miss the top spot again with new single Hair Too Long. It's more understandable when you consider the two huge new releases above Hair Too Long this week though, and it's achieved a solid #3 debut regardless. Hair Too Long is the second single from Night & Day (Day Edition), due in July, and marks their 17th top 10 hit overall (including album track Volcano and b-side Hurricane).

Completing the all-new top four this week are two artists who make their first top 10 appearances. British singer HRVY has made a couple of appearances lower down the chart, with Talk To Ya and Personal both charting within the last six months. Brand new single Hasta Luego makes an instant impression though, charting at #4 despite only being released on Wednesday. It's a collaboration with Cuban-Spanish popstar Malu Trevejo, who makes her first chart appearance overall.

While the above new entries are entirely expected in my chart, this one is perhaps more random. I can give or take Diplo generally, he can produce some brilliance (notably with Major Lazer on tracks like Cold Water and Light It Up) but I can be impartial to a lot of his stuff too. I listened to Color Blind out of pure curiosity and although it took a couple of listens to properly hit me, I was pleasantly surprised. The song is a collaboration with Lil Xan, an American "SoundCloud rapper." Typically that would warn me off entirely (and tbh, his own songs aren't particularly good x) but I think he sounds brilliant on this. Combined with some good production from Diplo, Color Blind is a surprisingly brilliant package and gives both artists their first top 10s (as a soloist in Diplo's case, he's had three with Major Lazer). Lil Xan scores his first hit overall too.

This week, we pay tribute to Tim Bergling, better known as Avicii, who died last week aged only 28. Avicii racked up five top 10 hits in my chart, and only managed his first #1 single last September, alongside Rita Ora on Lonely Together. It became his biggest hit, and has re-entered this week at #30. One of his huge hits, Levels, didn't make my chart when it first came out (I was aware of the song and had heard it numerous times on the TV but hadn't properly listened to the song until recently), but enters my chart for the first time at #39. RIP Tim, you will be sorely missed.

In this week's album chart, while CNCO comfortably hold a second week at #1, we see an all-boyband top 2 as PRETTYMUCH climb four places with their debut EP. It's their first appearance on the album chart, and although it doesn't quite contend for the #1, it beats another EP - that of Ulrik Munther. Ulrik previously had a 100% record of #1 albums, but Are You Alright? falls below the mark and only makes it to #4, despite lead single Before being a big hit.

Back in the singles chart, there are debuts for Brooks and Bad Bunny. The latter joins Cardi B and J Balvin on I Like It, one of two J Balvin debuts this week in what is already quite a Latin-themed chart. Alongside six CNCO tracks, there are Spanish or Spanglish tracks from HRVY & Malu Trevejo, In Real Life, Liam Payne and the aforementioned Cardi B track, plus Latin influences on dance-pop track Mad Love by Sean Paul.

Hello Joseph!
I like top 2 of yours, as well as the debuts of "Like I Do", "Familiar" and "I Like It"!
I'm also happy that Avicii re-entered your chart.
Great chart once again!
