Kenenisa Bekele will lead the London Marathon's elite men's field as four of the five fastest runners in history go head-to-head in April's race.

Ethiopian Bekele, the second-fastest man in history, will be joined on the start line by Kelvin Kiptum, Birhanu Legese and Mosinet Geremew on 23 April.

Returning 2022 winner Amos Kipruto will also face competition from world champion Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia.

"I can't wait to return to London as the champion," said Kenya's Kipruto.

"London always has a really strong field and this year is the same so I know I will face a battle to defend my title, but I'm confident and looking forward to it," the 30-year-old added.

Britain's four-time Olympic track champion Mo Farah will also compete as he prepares to say an "emotional goodbye" at the event.

Laura Muir led a dominant British performance in the 3,000m at the World Indoor Tour in Boston as she claimed victory in her season-opening race.

European and Commonwealth 1500m champion Muir won in a time of eight minutes 40.34 seconds as British athletes filled the top four positions.

Melissa Courtney-Bryant finished next in 8:41.09, ahead of Katie Snowden (8:47.41) and Hannah Nuttall (8:47.72).

Elsewhere, Morgan Lake set an outright British women's high jump record.

Competing in Hustopece, Czech Republic, Lake's indoor clearance at 1.99m saw her better Katarina Johnson-Thompson's mark of 1.98m set at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Nice to see some British success in the indoor championships! I always wonder how well that form carries over into the summer, hopefully well.

Britain's Laura Muir won the Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games in New York.

The 29-year-old Scot crossed the line in four minutes 20.15 seconds, with British team-mate Katie Snowden finishing third.

Olympic 1500m silver medallist Muir produced a strong finish to fight back having lost the lead late in the race.

The prestigious Wanamaker Mile attracts the world's best middle distance runners and is the showpiece event of the Millrose Games.

In the men's Wanamaker Mile, Britain's Neil Gourley placed second in a personal best time of three minutes 49.46 seconds.

Muir's training partner Jemma Reekie was ninth in the women's race, more than eight seconds back.

Keely Hodgkinson and Laura Muir have been named in Great Britain and Northern Ireland's team for the European Indoor Championships.

Hodgkinson, 20, who will defend her 800m title, set a world-leading time in the distance earlier in February.

Scotland's four-time European indoor champion Muir, who has won the 1500m and 3000m titles twice each, competes over 1500m this year.

The event takes place in Istanbul, Turkey from 2-5 March.

All the best to them! Given the success they've had over the years I wouldn't be surprised to see them do well again - but who knows what will happen on the day?

Keely Hodgkinson started the defence of her 800m European indoor title by winning her first heat in Istanbul.

The Olympic silver medallist will now race alongside fellow Briton Isabelle Boffey in Saturday's semi-finals.

Last week Hodgkinson claimed the World Indoor Tour title in a British record of one minute 57.18 seconds but on Thursday her 2:01.67 was enough to win.

New Zealand runner Zane Robertson has been banned for eight years following a positive test for erythropoietin (EPO) and "providing false documentation".

The 33-year-old, who won 5,000m bronze at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, was caught after being tested at the 2022 Great Manchester Run.

He claimed he was given EPO in Kenya, where he trains, when trying to get a Covid-19 vaccination.

However, the medical facility in Kenya did not support Robertson's claim.

Russia's doping suspension has been lifted - but the nation will remain banned "for the foreseeable future" because of the war in Ukraine, the World Athletics Council has ruled.

Athletes have not been able to compete for Russia since November 2015 after state-sponsored doping was uncovered.

The Russian federation has been reinstated after meeting conditions set by World Athletics' Russia Taskforce.

But athletes remain excluded following Russia's invasion in February 2022.

World Athletics president Sebastian Coe said: "The unprecedented sanctions imposed on Russia and Belarus by countries and industries all over the world appear to be the only peaceful way to disrupt and disable Russia's current intentions and restore peace.

Eilish McColgan smashed her own British record to win the Berlin Half Marathon.

The 32-year-old crossed the finish line in one hour five minutes and 43 seconds, taking 43 seconds off her previous best over the distance.

Scotland's McColgan, who will make her debut over 26.2 miles at the London Marathon on 23 April, moves up to fourth on the European all-time list.

Ethiopia's Tsigie Gebreselama was second, 30 seconds back, with her compatriot Yalemget Yaregal third.

McColgan's fellow Briton Samantha Harrison missed out on the podium in fourth.

Athletics Ireland has issued an apology after a mix-up led to runners in the national 10km championship not completing the full distance.

The governing body said "unforeseen circumstances" were to blame for the confusion in Sunday's Great Ireland Run in Dublin.

Reports suggested the race ended up being only 8.5km long.

Athletics Ireland issued a statement and said it will provide runners with more information when it is available.

"Athletics Ireland and the event organiser Dublin City Harriers wish to apologise to all participants for the unforeseen circumstances that led to today's Great Ireland Run (incorporating the national 10k championship) being less than the specified distance," the statement said.

A top ultra-marathon runner who was disqualified from a race for using a car says she made a "massive error" accepting the trophy for third place.

Joasia Zakrzewski said her actions were "not malicious" and the incident was caused by miscommunication.

Dr Zakrzewski, from Dumfries, took part in the 2023 GB Ultras Manchester to Liverpool 50-mile race on 7 April.

It was later discovered she travelled by car for about 2.5 miles before continuing to complete the race.
