Today marks 35 years since the release of 'Who's That Girl', the lead single from the soundtrack to the film of same name. Madonna approached the main collaborators to her previous album, Patrick Leonard and Stephen Bray, to create an uptempo and a downtempo for her new starring film, then-called 'Slammer'. After coming up with a chorus, Leonard handed over the demo tape to Madonna who added lyrics and melody and decided to change the name for the film to 'Who's That Girl' to match the song. 'Who's That Girl' continues Madonna's interest in Hispanic culture with its incorporation of Spanish lyrics and Latin-flavoured production and became another instant hit around the world, including #1 in Canada, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, UK and US. Its peak at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 made Madonna the first artist to achieve six number ones in the 80s and the first female to achieve six number ones as a soloist. 'Who's That Girl' also earned Madonna nominations for "Best Song Written for Visual Media" at the 1988 Grammys and "Best Original Song" at the 1988 Golden Globes.

I don't rate this song at all really. A real non-entity in her discography for me.

It's not a career highlight but I do enjoy it and I think it's better than being brushed off as just a 'La Isla Bonita' clone. Clearly Madonna was still being influenced by that Latin sound but I think this stands up in its own right. It was lovely to see it dug out for the Rebel Heart Tour; Madonna's tender vocal works beautifully. I also love the passion in the Who's That Girl Tour performance!

Love the live versions more.
At this time she could have released anything to sail up the charts ❤️

I loved the song as a kid, I still remember brainwashing my parents to buy me the single first and then the soundtrack biggrin.gif
In perspective it's kinda weird when an artist releases a big hit like La Isla Bonita and then a few months later releases something very very similar... but not as good...

I love this track, perhaps from a nostalgic point of view, but it's such a fun song and whenever I hear it, it takes me right back to being a little boy - I played it over and over!

Don't really rate this song all that much, its nice, a bright latin/pop bop & its at the very least better than the awful movie it came from.
