the EOY season begins! once again, it has been a great year for music, which will be showcased in this thread over the course of the next 2 months.

firstly, the tradition of the hate chart being announced first will continue - the 10 worst hit singles of 2017 will be counted down. I will then briefly reflect on the year in albums, TV and film before the main event: counting down the top 250 songs of the year.

the chart year started in December 2017 and will finish in two weeks time, so the songs countdown will not start until then.

but before anything though, let's take a look at last year's top ten.

it was Jax Jones who claimed the year's top selling single, despite never reaching #1 in the weekly chart! he could potentially get there again this year as 'Breathe' was a very big hit on this chart!

before we get to the POSITIVE section of the EOY thread let's take a look back at the worst songs of the past 12 months. Firstly here's the Bottom 10 from last year.

#01 Demi Lovato - Sorry Not Sorry
#02 Taylor Swift - Look What You Made Me Do

Zedd only went and released an even more annoying single this year with 'The Middle' but the quality of the bottom 10 was so poor this year that there just isn't enough room to include him in it this year. Now I won't drag this out too long as I've already revealed most of my top 10 in the hate chart voting (which you can vote in now) so let's start with...

#10. Louis Tomlinson - Miss You
Such a poor and very dated song with his trademark weak vocals which only went and scraped the top 40 for one week before falling at a truly comical rate. I only heard it one and a half times but that was more than enough (as with a few others on this list). Good career move for him going on to judging The X Factor, though hopefully he leaves that too next year alongside Ayda and we get Louis Walsh and Nicole Scherzinger back.

#09. XXXTENTACION - changes
Aside from liking 'SAD' enough to chart it lowly for a few weeks I never got into his music, as his songs for the most part are completely lacking in substance and go nowhere. Case in point is when he tried doing a piano ballad, not only is it boring as hell, he doesn't have the voice for it... but at least hearing it only took 2 minutes out of my life.

#08. Maroon 5 - Girls Like You (feat. Cardi B)
I don't get how this song was so huge, it's only now starting to properly decline in the US and it spent ages in the UK chart too, and for such a non event of a song too. I can tolerate most of Maroon 5's songs, some I even like, but this is just so bland it's annoying and it is not helped by the squeaky guitar that is all throughout the song (which you cannot un-hear). Cardi B can't save it either with one of her non essential raps, she can do a lot better.

#07. James Arthur - Naked
Thanks for putting that mental image in my head James. Anyway, it's a very boring song with his whiny painful vocals, and a year on he's looking at getting 2 more reasonably sized hits at the same time... yay. Can we please send him back to 2012? Or at least give him a good song to work with like 'Impossible', which yes I did like enough to chart at #1 (though would probably get nowhere near it if it was released now).

Actually like most of last years worst 10! (aside from maybe a couple from Divide but as a whole I did like that album even if the singles were incredibly overplayed)

Girls Like You is still a banger albeit far from Maroon 5's best and I have gone off it a lot since it managed #2 on my chart Can't stand anything else out so far though! Miss You and Naked are atrocious, I didn't know Louis was going back to X Factor but I suppose there's nothing else for him to do aside from make trashy pop flops I can't remember how Changes goes but I did like SAD

Fair enough if you like GLY but it's far from a 'banger'. At least you agree on the other poor excuses for songs.

Being on X Factor must be giving Louis more money than his short lived solo career ever did. I'd be very surprised if he ever gets an album, I'm half expecting a 1D reunion soon because their solo careers aren't doing very well at the moment.

the top 10 WORST hit singles of the year

#06. HRVY - Personal
Annoying trashy teen-pop song which my ears were subjected to thanks to it charting lowly for a few weeks. Thankfully it didn't go near the top 40 but it still counts as a 'hit' for this chart so yeah, don't remember too much about it now but I remember it being very bad and annoying so #6 feels about right.

#05. 6ix9ine - GUMMO
I'm not going to give him the satisfaction of being #6 or #9 here so starting off the top five is the chart forum's least favourite rapper, but not for the song he's best known for. 'FEFE' was bad but his absolute worst has to be this horrific shouty mess of a song, which is hard to distinguish from his other similar 'efforts' so you may as well add the other shouty songs of his into this position, but 'GUMMO' was the biggest and most obnoxious. Hopefully he goes to prison for a good few years and we are saved from more of his songs making the chart.

Ah... the EOY lists time is starting! Really love to see what other people listen to in their year end lists!

"Miss You": What a really forgettable song from the least memorable member from One Direction in my opinion
"changes": I HATE XXXTENTACION SO MUCH! His music is SO BAD! I will also talk about him in my worst Year-End List, when I'll decide it to make it. This song is bad, enough said.
"Girls Like You": I liked this song at first, then I couldn't stand it in a couple of weeks, but the final nail in the coffin has got to be the overplay. In my job, I've listened to this song a lot, it couldn't escape me. I'm now starting to get sick of this song.
"Naked": Hahahaha... I kinda "like" this song, the lyrics always make me laugh, imagining James Arthur standing naked, just... hahaha. Okay, real talk: like i said, I like this song a little bit, mainly because the CADE remix made it tolerable for me.
Overall, a great start Dan! Looking forward to the rest of your lists!

"Personal": Never heard this song, however I've heard "Hasta Luego" and "I Wish You Were Here" by the same artist and "I Wish You Were Here" is in my opinion decent.
"Gummo": AGREED! "FEFE" was an awful song, but the worst song from him by far is this. I don't even classify this as a song, but as a huge Mess! I can't wait to see him get into the irrelevant train soon enough! Good riddance to bad rubbish!

Louis is certainly the weak link of 1D and they were an overall very weak group anyway. Glad he hasn't done any more songs since.
Well I don't hate X quite that much but his music for the most part isn't to my taste. Pun intended with his latest single being called 'BAD!' too?
I think if it wasn't so big and played on radio GLY wouldn't have made my list, but it was so got the chance to get annoying.
It is funny in that regard but I'd rather not think of James Arthur standing naked either.

Early December is probably the best time to start, I like to get the hate chart and other reviews out before then but I don't start the songs countdown until December. It feels more like an end-of-year having it in December than January, though the past two years it took me up until the end of Jan to finish it anyway.

I didn't like both of those either, they're not as bad though.
Hopefully we see the last of him soon enough, his songs are all awful and he's a crappy person too from what I've read, looks like he may be getting a prison sentence soon for various violent crimes.

Glad 6ix9ine has appeared in here, and Gummo especially as that really was dreadful. I do at least like one or two X songs but I can't stand anything I've heard by 6ix9ine! Personal by HRVY is a good choice to include as well, definitely annoying teen-pop.

#04. Mason Ramsey - Famous
Such a cringeworthy song made to quickly cash in on him being a meme for yodelling at Walmart, thankfully it didn't do too well but it still made both the UK and US charts. Country isn't a genre I like anyway but this stood out for the wrong reasons, not to mention it's about wanting to be famous... for loving you. No thanks.

#03. Stefflon Don - Ding-A-Ling (feat. Skepta)
Some people somehow didn't only think this was a good idea, but then actually went out to write and produce this mess of a song, and for whatever reason Skepta signed onto it too (as if he could save it). Basically the reason it's top 3 is simply that it has the most annoying use of a sample ever, but there's also no tune to it and the lyrics aren't anything to write about either (Stefflon spends half her verse rapping about her pussy, lovely).

#02. Anne-Marie - 2002
I remember when Anne-Marie was a promising rising talent, she had a few good songs in 'Alarm' and 'Ciao Adios', then over the next few singles she got gradually worse, 'Heavy' and 'Then' didn't have much to them (though I enjoyed the John Gibbons remix of 'Heavy'), 'Friends' was alright but quickly got a bit annoying... then this happened, and I haven't enjoyed any of her chart hits since either. To get the main reason for its appearance out of the way, that chorus is so irritating, the mashup of popular songs from back in the day does not work, and I'd still dislike it even if the songs were all actually from 2002. It doesn't help that it has serial offender Ed Sheeran in the writing credits, but he can do much better than this. The sentimental lyrics don't help and the instrumental does nothing for me either. Can we please get some good songs from her next year? It's not looking promising at the moment (especially if 'Perfect To Me' takes off, that could contend for next year's worst of list) but she must still have it in her.

Okay, "2002", here is my biggest unpopular opinion: I like Anne-Marie and I think this song is... alright.
The chorus however, confused me and I agree, that the mashup of popular songs didn't work, also every song she mentioned wasn't even in 2002! Most of them are earlier than that, hell, "99 Problems" (a song she also mentioned in the chorus) was released in 2004, did she check the facts right? I think not.
Still many of her songs will probably wind up in my year-end list, but mostly because of how they charted in my airplay and streaming charts combined and that these songs were in my playlists, mostly in the A-List (I have a BBC Radio 1 type Playlist structure, but with more songs than just 15 of them.).
Otherwise, she has talent in my opinion... and I just feel dirty saying that, considering how much her songs got hate.
Not saying I'm a fan far from it, but she can be good sometimes.
I need a shower after what I just said... but thankfully I know what your #1 is and I can't wait to see you rip this song to pieces, just like how I will rip this song in my Year-end lists. (Seriously, guess where your #1 worst song of 2018 will land on my Year-end lists.)

#01. Lil Dicky (feat. Chris Brown) - Freaky Friday
Well you all saw this coming, it's not quite as painful as certain other worst of list 'victors' ('Let It Go' remains the most painful song ever recorded) but this takes it this year for being cringe, totally unfunny and painful to listen to. It's the second time Chris Brown has topped this list following 'Don't Wake Me Up' and it really is nearly as bad. Now the beat is okay, being the standard DJ Mustard beat (I was hoping we'd hear a bit more from him after this but he seemingly went back into obscurity) but that isn't saving the song when it's basically a rip of better songs he's produced. We all know the real reason it's here and it's because of Chris Brown's whiny vocals and the song being all about just how "great" he is. Now I do like a few of his songs but at other times he is just really annoying such as here.

Was it meant to be ironic that when he brags about how well he can sing, he's drowned in autotune and doing his worst whining? And I know it's supposed to be Lil Dicky with the voice of Chris Brown but we all know Chris really is this smug. And then he spends half the verse going 'ooh I'm black now I can say the n-word!1!!1!', which I don't find offensive as such, just not as funny as I'm sure he thinks it is. Oh and also the part where he talks about his dick... lovely. Then of course they have to bring Ed Sheeran and Kylie Jenner into it at the end to make it even worse (the DJ Khaled cameo wasn't as bad, at least they poked fun at him always yelling in his songs which gets annoying). And the half arsed resolution of 'but wait, I love myself!1!'. Just an all-round annoying song and baffling that enough people enjoyed it (without the actual music video, this was before they counted) to send it to #1.

Well this year's hate chart went MUCH better than the last two years. Freaky Friday is a good shout for worst of the year (it's not really a serious song but it's a lot worse than most of the novelty this year, Mason Ramsey included in that).

Well I definitely think 2002 is worse than Freaky Friday, but not a fan of either.

Without the music video, Freaky Friday is definitely annoying but if you see the video as well you can get how it's a sort of comedy song and the first time I watched it I'll admit I thought it was good. No doubt though that the extra parts towards the end are totally cringe (apart from DJ Khaled as you say!). The song very quickly got boring, every listen more annoying than the last.

That final five worst of the year I can definitely agree with.

Anne-Marie definitely seems to be rather disliked on here these days, she just hasn't had any good songs being released as singles recently sadly, and she'll continue like this seeing as the public are allowing it. I'm sure she has talent, but I just don't like many of her songs.

I would definitely like something of that quality again, I think she has another one with Clean Bandit but I doubt it will be that good now.

I know it's not meant to be serious but it's still very annoying, novelty can be done well or it can fall flat like this.

Well for me they're almost as bad as each other so there's that.
The song definitely works better with the video (from the one time I watched it) but I was still not a fan, the video isn't too great and certainly not enough to save the song.

I knew you were no fan of Freaky Friday but worst of the year? Fair enough, we'll have to vehemently disagree there as I still love it. I mean yeah the lyrcis are trash but it's just an all-round pisstake & that hook is undeniable.

I really like 2002 too oops but can't argue much with the rest of your list. This Is Me should be there though, awful song made worse by the fact it never leaves the charts for more than 5 minutes.

The hook is catchy I'll give you that but annoying for me. It may have worked better for me if it wasn't Chris Brown in the featuring role, but I don't really like anything else I've heard of Lil Dicky's so I guess he's just not for me. 'Comedy' songs are very hit and miss and this one is a big miss.
This Is Me, I'll put in the dishonourable mentions category; it's so cliche, her over-singing it and it being in the charts for ages and all over X Factor doesn't help at all.

I'll keep it brief, since I want to lash out on this song a little bit more in my Year-End-Lists.
This song is obnoxious, irratating and not funny at all.
Lil Dicky sucks, Chris Brown sucks, the production sucks, the lyrics suck, this song sucks!
The best part of this song is the DJ Khaled cameo, hands down.
But even the other cameos annoy me, especially Kendall Jenner.
And the message of self-loving makes me want to punch both artists in the face!
But yeah, horrible song and hopefully both artists careers will die fast.
Overall I enjoyed your worst song list!

But in my personal opinion I don't like "I'm A Mess", "Top Off", I forgot about "Hasta Luego" and I especially hate 6ix9ine in general. The other songs are either tolerable, listenable, decent or forgetable.
Also, shout out to "Goodbye" having the worst sample I've heard in a while.
And in my opinion, "Natural" is better than "Believer", which was terrible upon relistening.

Rap Devil isn't even laughably bad... it's just plain bad.
This Taylor era was such a mess and not very good, End Game isn't quite as bad as Look What.. but not enjoyable especially as Radio 1 played it a lot.
I do quite like Pink's version, the song is reasonably well written I just don't like the musical theatre version of it.

Best FILM of the year

The Avengers: Infinity War
Without question the best film of the year, and possibly ever (a bit early to say so quote me next year). So much happens in it but it all works perfectly with the separate plot points connecting, and it's all so visually appealing. I'm sure you all know the ending but I won't spoil just in case, it's all so good. Especially as a keen follower of the MCU, but you don't even need to have seen the other films to get this (though it helps).

Best TV SERIES of the year

The Good Place
It was a toss up between this and B99 for both being great new discoveries but this takes it this year. I had heard Jameela Jamil was now up to being in some TV series but that alone didn't sell this to me, but decided to check it out after it got a fair bit of Buzzjack praise and as it's on Netflix. Turns out Jameela is just as good at this as she was doing the chart show, and Kirsten Bell can also be forgiven for being partly responsible for Frozen cos she's great in this too. Great original premise with lots of great twists, it had me hooked where I managed to catch up to date from the start in about 2 months. For those who don't know it's a sitcom about 4 people who die and get sent to "the good place", but one of them doesn't really belong there.

Other top TV series of the year:
Brooklyn Nine-Nine (only up to series 3 with this so far but so far it's great)
Doctor Who (though a bit of a disappointment, I really like the new Doctor)
The Big Bang Theory (a strong contender for next year's Best as I imagine they'll really step it up for the finale)
South Park (a much stronger season this year than previous years)

Really enjoyed the new Avengers movie, still need to see more movies though. I've missed out on a lot of movies and tv series.
Never heard your album of the year, still need to hear it.
But I heard some of those albums, my favourite has to be the new Jess Glynne album, but I also like Sigala's album too!

Here is how it will work this year. Similarly to last year, the top 250 songs of the year will be counted down, though more attention to detail will be paid for the top 100.

The tracking year for 2018 takes into account points accumulated from chart #379 to the most recent #431, which means it is a 53-week year. The formula also takes into playcount taken from 24/11/2017 to 29/11/2018 inclusive. Any plays from today onwards will count towards next year's chart. The chart points will be expressed as 'sales' totals for the tracking year.

To keep it fair, any song that charted during the tracking year is eligible, including tracks that did not peak during the tracking year, which means there will be quite a few 'leftovers' from the previous year.

Here's some facts then:
• 37 songs in the Top 250 failed to reach the weekly top 40 during the tracking year (some of these however did chart highly during 2017), two of which are in the Top 100. The lowest peaking track made it to #69, however three songs which peaked last year had a lower 'tracking year peak', with the lowest of these being just #90(!)
• The list includes 18 songs which peaked at #1 during the tracking year, as well as a few other former #1s
• The act with the most appearances are AOTY winners Above & Beyond, who have ten entries.

Before we start anyhow, we should give a special mention to a song which just missed out on the cut.

This one's very unlucky to be a victim of its own release date, but seeing as it's the current #1 it should have a very good chance of making next year's Top 100. My absolute favourite song at the moment, with the Avicii vibes in the production and of course Sandro who appeared in a few Avicii songs, which is just what I want to hear right now while we're still waiting for Avicii's posthumous () material (which I'm glad they're not rush-releasing as a cash-in anyway). 'Firestone' seemed almost impossible for Kygo to better but he may have done just that, we'll see this time next year how it does though but I expect it'll have a very lengthy chart run, such a fresh and great song and hopefully a future UK hit too (I can't really see it taking off for real sadly, but at least it's made the Spotify top 100 for now).

yes! it's great, excited for the series 3 final.

yep I was sure that would end up going nowhere in the chart cos it was so boring but of course because of just that it ended up being a hit. at least he'll be forgotten about very soon anyway.
Drake and Post Malone really are at the top of their game right now, no surprise they are so big in the chart.

I seem to miss a lot of films too, I meant to see the new Incredibles film but haven't got round to that yet.
Not sure what you'd think of my AOTY as you don't seem to chart any trance music.

She is! Basically all the lead female characters are the faves, how very Buzzjack of me.

It's sounding really good at the moment, it's easily my #1 this week anyhow.

From your first bunch of songs, I like: "Blah Blah Blah" (it's currently a big hit in my country), ""Came Here For Love" (really good song by both Sigala and Ella Eyre), "Jumanji" (Really enjoy it for what it is), "Sex, Love & Water" (Really groovy and a fun song), "Hearts Ain't Gonna Lie" (The Jonas Blue remix really made me like this song a lot) and "Bodak Yellow" (Decent song, even though Cardi B has made a lot better songs now)

Bodak Yellow is my favourite in that section, it didn't make all that big an impact in my chart at the time but Cardi's continued presence + iconic meme status has seen it hold up well in my affections!

It's still good in season 3! S3 finale should be coming soon so I'm looking forward to that.
Well hopefully Taylor improves for her next album so I don't have to include her in my hate chart section. Good to see us agreeing on quite a few here anyway.

Infinity War is a must see, you don't have to watch the other Avengers films to get it either though if you're going to you may as well watch in order.
I'm liking Jodie so I hope she stays on, but the writing could really be improved. I'm enjoying the season but it's far from the classic Eccelston/Tennant era.

Cool! There'll be a lot more songs here that you like too.

The hate chart seems to have gone down better this year than most, I guess it helps that there's a lot of bad songs around though!
Yeah I've really enjoyed TGP, and Jameela is of course my fave in it. *.*
I'm not quite as big a fan as you but I've quite liked most of her output, good to have her as a big name rapper.

It's got a good bassline and catchy hook, and I enjoy it for what it is but ultimately it's very short with not all that much to it - not that any of Kanye's serious songs this year have been any better, mind. Although it may as well be Lil Pump's song seeing as he has most of the lines, Kanye's part is the highlight.

And so we get to the first of ten Above & Beyond entries, so yes this is one of the weaker tracks on the album, but still great. They are top of the game when it comes to progressive vocal trance of which this is a fine example of, though now it doesn't stand out too much amongst the rest of their brilliant album (it did initially peak higher than quite a few of their tracks yet to come, but didn't hold up as well).

I don't like Kodak Black as a person or rapper but this is an undeniable tune, even Kodak's parts are good here (although his verse is the weakest part of the song) but it's the production that really sells it, love a steel drum.

Pick Up is a relaxing tune.
Bank Account, I quite like; and Joyner Lucas did a fire remix of it.

Disappointed to see Freaky Friday at the top of your hate chart, one of my faves of the year.

Bodak Yellow/Zeze - It seems only fair that Kodak has got a hit now seeming how huge Cardi got from ripping off his track.

Fall - Some of the lines from this are genius and some are poor but I wasn't able to get into this anywhere near as much as most of the other tracks from the album.

I Love It - I seriously dislike Lil Pump but this song is just too catchy to deny. Kanye's pretty funny in the video too to be fair.

Bank Account - One of my faves from last year. I'm very partial to a good 21 Savage verse. I love his almost disinterested flow.

Also loving Bouff Daddy, Mask Off, One More Sleep & My Lover.

thanks for the comments! not really familiar with Joyner Lucas beyond his Eminem feature, I may check out his remix anyhow cos he was great in 'Lucky You'.

It does have a distinct KSHMR sound to it, I do enjoy a lot of his material though.

ZEZE bangs tho

It seems quite a few people like FF then, more than I thought.
The hook really sold 'Fall' for me, I think Eminem's lyrics best lyrics this era are in 'The Ringer' but that track doesn't hold up as well on repeated listens and it's just over 5 minutes of continuous rapping.
Lil Pump is really someone we could do without tbh, I just got reminded of his 'Drug Addicts' song yesterday which is terrible.
I'm not too keen on 21 Savage myself but Bank Account is undeniably catchy.

Had to give Discovery Channel a listen just out of curiosity The beat and drop are quite groovy I agree!

My Lover was a nice urban UK-Afrobeats track to start the year off with, quite the earworm for the time it was in the charts for!

Em got a lot of stick for this to the point where he referenced 'Walk On Water-gate' in earlier entry 'Fall', but I think it's done very well. I enjoy the nod to 'Stan' (another great song of his) in the writing sound effect and outro, and it's one of his better reflective tracks where he raps about the struggle of staying on top for so long and coming up with new rhymes. I suppose I do enjoy a piano ballad, which this essentially is, a bold move from him. Less said about follow-up single 'River' the better though.

Hello E very nearly a top 10 for you! It's a toss up between that & my current entry for my personal fave this year.

Absolutely loved Ladykiller, still spin that quite regularly.

Opa was a cracking tune! They are very hit & miss but that was brill.

Yep, Lika usually has a good beat, she's racked up a few hits in my chart now.
My Lover also had something a lot of the other "urban" tracks don't, actual sentiment.

That was so annoying especially when the much weaker 21-featuring 'Bartier Cardi' scraped in at #40 when it should've been 'Bank Account' being lucky enough to do so.

It was a great find, I must say though its #11 peak is about right as all the songs that were top 10 that week are still to come in the countdown.
Ladykiller also one of the best BJSC entries of the year, there's not too many of those still to come.
DV&LM are far more miss than hit for me so 'Opa' was surprisingly good even considering KSHMR's involvement.

Walk On Water is pretty good, even though the production sounds like a demo.
Ric Flair Drip is qutie fun.
That piano line from What I Wanna you mentioned was sampled from Brenda Russell's 1979 song Little Bit Of Lovin'. Other artists to have this sampled in their music include Ariana Grande (The Way) and the late Big Pun (Still Not A Player).

Gutted I missed that BUNT. song when it came out, sounds amazing!

Mad Love was nice for the first few weeks it was out but it did get a bit dull after a while.

Blue Lights is a great piece as well, nice to see Jorja get a solo Top 40 hit.

Walk On Water - I did really like this one from Eminem. Shame it got such a negative reaction.

What I Wanna - Love this apart from that dreadful fart line.

She Loves Control - Shame this didn't get pushed as a single, probably would have been massive.

Mad Love - Forgot that this was this year to be honest. Fun song though.

It looks like we'll get 1 or 2 Xmas songs on the EOY list every year especially with December being full of them in the chart now.

You'd probably like most of BUNT.'s material actually, their songs are all quite similar.
Mad Love isn't a huge fave of mine and probs won't get many re-plays this EOY season but it's a decent tune.
Blue Lights is great, not fussed on her other material though it's a bit of a one-off (that and her Drake collab).

Yep it was a good effort from him, think its lack of a beat didn't help its reception though.

Hi Dan!! Loving She Loves Control, Blue Lights, Emoji and Mad Love from the last section. Blue Lights becoming a top 40 hit was such a welcome surprise this year, I adored it when it got entered to BJSC a couple of years ago and remains my favourite Jorja track.

Jorja's follow ups just didn't interest me but Blue Lights is great.

Didn't expect HAGL to get a push seeing as Arlissa is a no-name and she had lead credit, would've been nice for Jonas to push it as he had nothing else at the time though.
One More Sleep seems to be a staple of the UK Christmas chart now which is really great to see, it's also back in my personal top five!
OOMH wasn't half as good as her song from last year '3AM' but was good to get that and a few other good songs from her this year when she is rather hit and miss.
Camila's team really messed that up, could've been a big top 10 :')

The chart, music and topical Queen had more #1s this year on my chart than anybody, though this hasn't had enough time to make my top 100 (the other three will). This one particularly seems to have a lot of undeserved hate but I really like it, it's an uplifting song and very much suits her voice (I can't imagine I'd like it too much if given to Little Mix or Anne-Marie). It led a very solid album which cements her place as my current fave pop singer.

well it's not quite there for me, and as a big Calvin Harris fan it's no spoiler that One Kiss is my fave UK #1 of the year... but where will it end up in my EOY?

Solo, Focus and Motorsport are pretty good

I Could Be The One is a modern dance classic. Tim Berg, may you rest in peace.
Filthy has been panned by quite a lot of reviewers, but I myself like it.

I was a bit disappointed with the Drake x MJ track, didn't ever return to it after I heard it on the Chart Show

Funky Friday - I was so glad when this went to #1. He really hasn't disappointed with any of his releases since Wanna Know for me.

Solo - This peaked at 13 for me to but I really got bored of it after a week and it only managed 1 more week in my chart

Decline - I was really liking this but I do think it was just because I loved the Ja Rule track

Check - Good but pretty forgettable with most of the other UK rap songs this year.

Chun-Li - The instrumental really made this track for me. Much better than the Barbie Dreamz one that was released at the same time.

Don't Matter To Me - It was so good to hear MJ again; he sounds so good on this. I much prefer this to In My Feelings.

I also loved Havana, MotorSport & Man's Not Hot last year

Love No More was WAY better than Body for me, I have a real issue with liking the follow up singles of dance acts more than their hits (Justice for LF - Reality, NEIKED - Call Me, Kungs - Don't You Know etc. )

Giving High With Somebody a listen now, the tune on the whole is really good but that whistling is incredibly grating!

Avicii has a lot of modern dance classics, ICBTO doesn't seem to be as remembered as some of his others but still a top tune from him.

Well I thought they'd never top Rather Be but I really can't see Symphony ever getting topped, it's absolutely brilliant.
I think MJ really helped it here, if it was just Drake it'd most likely have not done much, it's not one of his absolute greats.
I would probably put Filthy a bit lower on an opinion only chart, but it is rather good anyway.

There's no topping that era for him, it was nice to have a bit of a throwback to that sound before he went all country on us anyhow.
Avicii has 6 songs left; 2 of the proper classics, 3 from the last EP and 1 from his unreleased material.

I'm not so much of a fan, wasn't interested in the EP other than 'No Words', and 'Hangman' was disappointing also, but if 'Funky Friday' is anything to go by, he could end up being one of my fave rappers.
I really thought I'd get into Solo more than I did hence the reasonably high debut, it is good but dropped off rather quickly here in comparison to the few previous songs ('I Miss You' is yet to come in this EOY)
I initially charted Barbie Tingz higher (Barbie Dreams is a different track!) but that fell off fast once Chun Li was made the proper single (and the right choice was made there too)

I usually like the big hits more (I mean they get big for a reason), and it's true here too, 'Body' is at least 100 places ahead of 'Love No More'.

This is a standout drum n' bass tune, which we haven't had from Sub Focus in a while so I'm willing to bet Dimension really made it stand out, I'd say he's top of this genre at the moment, you can just hear how well his tracks are produced. This was the first song of this collaboration project so I wasn't sure what to expect, and turns out it was a rather groovy house tune and better than anything we'd heard from Diplo or Mark Ronson in a while (and to be fair, Mark Ronson seemingly vanished after 'Uptown Funk', it was about time he came back). Nice to know Daniel is still alive too though his vocal is processed to the point of unrecognisability, which lets it down somewhat. Subsequent releases from Silk City were disappointing until of course they saved their best production and writing skills for 'Electricity', which we'll get to, perhaps sooner than you think.

Such an ambitious song with it having 3 completely different productions but it blends so well, Drake's verse is already so iconic too and one of the best things he's been involved on all year (and yes I am giving him the credit). The great video for this sent it back in the chart at a new peak and the tune still sound really fresh so it could even out-peak itself in the new year. Travis is proving himself to be one of the better rappers of the current era too, especially in an era where 6ix9ine and Lil Pump are big names. I should probably check the album sometime.

Let You Love Me is decent.
I Need A Painkiller, Dished and Only Can Get Better are some great dance choons.
No Tears Left To Cry really grew on me after listening to her Sweetener album. It has become a possible contender for my favourite hit songs of 2018.
Sicko Mode is a great song and I would recommend the album.

It's just as good as much of his released material though, it's the housey Avicii we know and love, with a strong vocal (I can't confirm who sang it so she'll remain uncredited), melodic build and drop. Would strongly recommend if you enjoy 'I Could Be The One'.

The most unlikely collaboration project of 2018 has to be Kiesza and Chris Malinchak, who now have made a number of songs together including two Christmas songs, one of which sits at #1 as I type. This was the first of those anyhow, and they're great for each other. Kiesza doesn't even do her usual vocal acrobatics on this song too which is refreshing, and it's got a unique beat and catchy bassline.

Good BJSC picks there, Connection Through Sound is a beaut.

Sicko Mode I should have liked more but it did feel a bit disjointed at times. The "like a light" part is memorable though.

Happier is such a fantastic song, will be very high up in my chart.

Their follow up was nearly as good too (it appeared at #175) so hopefully they stick around and stay consistent with the tunes.

Sadly it's a near miss for the EOY top 100 but it's already cemented its place in Thermo's hot hits history; as you may've guessed, it was my #1 in the 2013 EOY chart. It's a fairly sad listen in today's context with its lyrics, though I still really love the song. I'll leave myself from 5 years ago to elaborate...

Very unlucky and unfortunately this does just miss the top 100 (one more week and it'd have got in). It's not the classic Sigala sound but he does his best to reinvent his style here with a great nu-disco effort that sounds very uplifting, perfectly capturing the feeling of getting some monayyyyy. Ella has an outstanding vocal just as she did on 'Came Here For Love' (at this point they should just regularly collab cos her solo career is clearly never happening), and though I'd have taken a lot of people over Meghan Trainor and French Montana here they don't detract from the song either.

And getting the ultimately unlucky position this year is Drake, though he can't complain as he has two songs yet to come. 'In My Feelings' was not an instant stand-out when the album came out, and to be fair it was tough for anything to stand out on such a long album other than the current singles (and that MJ track for having MJ on it), though once the challenge took off and the song shot to #1 everywhere I was very much into it myself. It does feel like a slightly lesser 'Nice For What' but nonetheless it's a bop, the hook is so catchy, and it's refreshing to have Drake bring 'bounce' (supposedly the rap sub genre this is) to the charts with almost everyone else doing trap.

I'll give the Travis Scott album a listen sometime I think. Probably won't with the Ariana album, if the title track is anything to go by for the album tracks.

CTS is so good, glad it got a top 20 position too.
I kinda like the disjointedness of it, it works reasonably well. Drake's part is definitely the best anyway.
It's great though not my fave of Marshmello's so far, 'Alone' was really great and that should've smashed for him, and out of his UK hits, 'Wolves' is my fave though 'Happier' not too far behind.

We've got to the Top 100 pretty quickly Mother was a tune, the resemblance to a nursery rhyme was a bit creepy but it was such an earworm! I spy some nice BJSC entries in here, as well as Desire which got to me later this year.

Whoops about me getting Barbie Tingz/Dreams mixed up. I actually really like BD so that's why I probably had that one on my mind.

I have the opposite opinion on Look Alive. I thought it was just Drake on auto-pilot and it was JB's high-energy verse that really stood out.

Brilliant to see Wake Me Up here.

In My Feelings was alright but I'd rather it was DMTM or Nonstop that blew up instead.

Happier is solid.
Girlfriend is a great track with some dreamy production and a lush voice from Christine.
Nevermind is nice for a summer's day.
Nuh Ready Nuh Ready is decent
Better Now is one of my faves from Malone, along with Sunflower.
Lemon is great. Also, LOL at the part in The Radical Douche's Best Hit Songs of 2018 when this song came up and he ended up dancing and singing loudly to it. Did you know that Pharrell and Co. performed Lemon in this year's Kids Choice Awards.
First Time, Wake Me Up and Just Got Paid are great dance tracks. For the first one, I didn't expect Medina to come back into the Top 40 nine years after her minor hit You & I.
Really like No Limit. "F*** with me and get some money!"
For You grew on me upon repeated listens. Really digging its production.

Sicko Mode has grown massively over the months I quite like Nuh Ready Nuh Ready too, glad Calvin has since moved on from that style but it at least deserved top 40. No Limit is a huge huge fave of mine, probably the best thing G-Eazy has ever done!

Somewhat surprised that Better Now and First Time peaked so low for you!

I'm not sure what nursery rhymes you're referring to cos I don't get the similarity. Desire is really good, will probably be here next year too as it'll have a big post-Christmas climb.

Even auto pilot Drake is better than a lot of rappers, though Look Alive was better by his standards than a fair chunk of his album.
I'd have liked DMTM to get properly big also (though it had a reasonably good chart run). Nonstop didn't really do too much for me though.

Well I don't watch or follow the Kids Choice Awards so no I didn't.
I forgot Medina even had a minor hit before and I don't recall ever hearing said song either.

It's really a lot better than most of the rap in the chart, really well put together. Hope it makes a top 40 return following Christmas because it doesn't deserve to have the same number of top 40 weeks as 'Ay Caramba'.
I like Jess's dance songs the most but she's a great all rounder, her ballads have been surprisingly good.
Definitely one of his top tunes!
Well he has 3 more appearances in the top 100 so this isn't quite his best though still a big improvement on his first era (never got 'Congratulations')

It is a big grower, its US chart run says it all.
I very much prefer Calvin's current style to whatever NRNR was but it was good still.
I'd have to agree, not keen on G-Eazy otherwise.

Commentary

Starting off the Top 100 is the first of two appearances for Mr. Belt & Wezol. The Dutch duo have been going strong in my chart ever since their debut Spinnin' release 'Shiver', which until now remained their only EOY Top 100 appearance and it is still by some way their best song. It's not a truly outstanding song but it's a light bop with a catchy riff, showing that even years after the future house sound has been oversaturated they still do the style better than much of their contemporaries (and indeed, Oliver Heldens only has one appearance in the whole top 250, though it is still yet to come and higher than both MB&W entries), helped by them sticking to the more commercial side of the genre.

Commentary

DC Breaks are a British duo who I'd heard of before (and one of their tracks briefly charted too) but it was this that really caught my attention for sampling the theme of Netflix show Stranger Things (the track is named after its lead, Eleven). It didn't chart solely because of that however, as it's a really well produced track and the drop is insane! It cleverly uses the sample to build the tension but the drop isn't reliant on it, which helps it stand out from many other theme remixes. This one nearly got sent to Club Bizarre but I didn't want to go that cheap (although it would've passed the veto), so take a listen if you liked the drum n' bass spin-off.

Commentary

And indeed we have a sandwich here as Mr. Belt & Wezol make their second Top 100 appearance at #98, how lucky for them. This one is a reworking of the Wilson Phillips song 'Hold On' in the future house style we know and love them for. They've been rather consistent this year in sound so there isn't a whole lot to say here. This just edges out 'Stupid' by 4k sales so they're basically as good as each other, though this one is helped by having the better lyrics. It is also the sole hit so far for producer Aevion, and whoever the uncredited singer is too probably.

Commentary

Following their gap year Disclosure have had their best year since 2015, with 3 songs in the EOY top 100, not bad considering they only had 6 releases! This started off the run of 5 singles which eventually became the 'Moonlight' EP, and it's so refreshing to have them back for real.. hopefully an album follows in 2019. In a world of commercial dance acts going even more commercial, Disclosure have done very much the opposite with a load of singles inspired by a wide range of music they'd been listening to recently. This one closely resembles some of their past material but it definitely feels very fresh, their production is so slick as always and they're such a unique dance act, firmly cementing themselves as one of my top faves this year.

Commentary

Onto the first UK hit single of the 34 that are in the Top 100, and also the first of two appearances from Dua Lipa, who is one of the year's biggest contenders for the overall #1 with 'One Kiss'. She once again proves herself to be great on a dance track anyhow as 'Electricity' is by some way the best track from Diplo & Mark Ronson's Silk City project thus far, no doubt helped by her strong vocal as well as the team of songwriters they got for this. It's certainly chart oriented but still with the modern disco/house sensibilities that they built the project around. It's got a great groove with piano stabs which I always love, and unfortunately it's a victim of its release date as it only just about manages to make the Top 100 despite a very solid chart run thus far. Hopefully we get more from Silk City next year although Mark Ronson seems to be starting his own era so it may be put on hold for a while, and more dance songs with Dua vocals would be excellent too.

Commentary

It's been a rather quiet year for Danny L Harle, and PC Music in general, with this being his sole release of the year (it's not the first time he's done a disappearing act too, hope he makes a return soon next year). The hype was strong for a new single from him following last year's '1UL' which became his biggest hit to date, but whilst this managed to match his highest peak position achieved by 'Broken Flowers' it didn't hold up half as well so it has to settle for a low top 100 placing. It's a sweet little song which very much suited the winter period it was released in (though we didn't get any snow!) and his unique take on pop is always interesting to listen to, though it doesn't quite have the dance factor of a few of his other singles. As for Clairo, she may as well be anyone with her processed vocals but they're nice to listen to anyway.

Commentary

David has had a mammoth chart history (which took ages to type and format!!) but recently he hasn't been half as good as he used to be, and indeed this is only his second year-end top 100 appearance since 2014 (he appeared once in 2016, and didn't appear in 2015 or 2017). Most of his dance productions these days are rather basic and not much to write about, and he is truly well past his peak. So naturally it's this song which doesn't at all resemble EDM that ends up in my EOY list, and it's of course very much helped by Sia's great writing and vocal. It is yet another 'don't give up' song of hers but she does those well, and the production is rather inspired by Guetta's recent standards, slightly reminiscent of 'Dangerous'. No surprise of course as the pairing have proved themselves time and time again (though we'll never get another song on the quality level of 'Titanium'), and I'm very much here for them doing even more collabs.

Commentary

I wasn't expecting to ever chart Third Party again after I stopped paying any attention to them years ago but I gave this a quick skim to see if they had a return to past form after it popped up on Release Radar and it's actually very good. With big synths and a strong vocal hook (an inspired interpolation of Flip & Fill 'True Love Never Dies') it's a right banger and worth a listen if you like anthemic dance songs.

Commentary

I don't usually really get behind the random London urban tracks that make the chart, but this does a little something extra for me (so of course it was the most hated of the lot on Buzzjack..), the beat sounds quite cheap but it works on some level and ZieZie has some charisma here (also helped by his Fetty Wap impersonation, now Fetty is someone I wouldn't mind having another random hit) and I love him desperately trying to make certain words rhyme in the chorus. Fun song all round. It's one of two that didn't make my weekly top 40 so I never absolutely loved it but it held up well over time. Seems unlikely at this point we'll be seeing him again however.

I was worried they'd be gone for years when they said they were on hiatus, glad it turned out to just be a normal sized gap between eras. Their stuff this year has been very good.
Flames is certainly one of his best of recent times, can't go wrong with a Sia collab single I guess (shame their other collab this year was poor but it was only an album track).

Yep it shows he's still got it somewhat but it isn't quite up there with 'She Wolf' let alone 'Titanium'.
It didn't tire for me for a good while, but I always love a good commercial house smash.

'One Kiss' was certainly a lot better for me too as it's a big #1 contender in the EOY, 'Electricity' is great tho.
Wasn't too keen on 'Ay Caramba' but yes 'Fine Girl' was great.

He kinda sounds like Fuse I guess. How strange that as soon as UK rap really became dominant Fuse seemingly disappeared though, shame! Well, Fuse did get another hit in my chart this year, speaking of which...

Commentary

In the run up to Sigala's debut album he released a load of singles including a few that had little chart impact, this was one of them which only just made the UK top 75 but really deserved better. It's a great summery tune which instrumentally mashes afrobeats and Sigala's tropical dance styles together making for a fresh production. Then we have iconicness overload with Fuse ODG and Sean Paul reuniting on this song, two rappers that really add the fun factor and suit the song's party vibe. We haven't heard much from Fuse recently and what we did wasn't all too good so it was a nice surprise to have him on this song and back on top form (and with the catchphrases!). Sean Paul is great as ever too. Kent Jones however isn't really needed and I'm sure we'll all forget he exists again soon enough, but it's a great tune. Despite a very good debut it did however fall off rather quickly and by the time 'Just Got Paid' got released I'd very much moved on, the song just didn't sound as good once summer was over. Anyway, we will be seeing Sigala again as (despite peaking 15 places lower) 'Lullaby' is still to come.

Stupid was a great summer bop, loved the drop in it and was great for driving around in the sun! Feels Like Home was a real anti-climax I thought, on paper Sigala & Fuse sounded amazing but I feel like they could have done so much better and it really didn't stick around in my chart for much time at all despite its #2 peak, similar to yours I guess.

Fine Girl was definitely one of the better afro-beats songs to crack the chart this year, Electricity was one of the better dance pieces as well.

Commentary

We're back now and we resume the chart with one of the biggest hits of the final quarter. MK will of course be appearing a lot higher with '17' but for now 'Back & Forth' is here, which was the long-awaited and much-anticipated follow-up; debuting instantly at #1 and spending 5 weeks there; his longest #1 run to date. It was also really great to see him reunite with Becky Hill, who is such a good vocalist on dance tracks particularly. It doesn't quite have the impact of 'Piece of Me' but it is nonetheless a proper bop, and thankfully very much in the style of MK despite Jonas Blue's presence (I really can't hear what he did in this song) with the house beat that he has perfected and the piano stabs that I love. Hopefully he doesn't wait as long for his next release because he's really one of the best in his genre, and it's amazing to see him rack up the hits too (this was a reasonably sized #12 UK hit!).

Mr. Belt & Wezol are quite consistent with the bops, good to have them around.
I think ultimately their sounds don't, ahem, fuse together as well as Sigala's popstar collabs, but it's a great tune.
Yep Fine Girl was brilliant but I'm not really fussed on whether he gets another hit.
Electricity is great too, Dua really elevates it above the rest of Silk City's stuff so far.

Commentary

A surprise inclusion perhaps for those of you who don't follow my chart closely, but yes I do love a good piano ballad which this very much is. Freya's voice is simply wonderful over the sparse piano, and it's a rather emotional song. First heard in its live version sent to BJSC, it wasn't until the studio version took off on iTunes and I checked that out that I started to properly like it (I still rate the studio version well above the live one, though I'd quite like to hear a studio version of that string arrangement). A very inspired hit single (queen of avoiding ACR too!) and it looks like she'll have another hit on this chart at least as 'Waking Up' has already out-peaked this.

Commentary

This was actually (very briefly) a BJSC potential for me, before it did get sent (and went top 10, but I can't complain as my entry that contest finished above it). We don't get a whole lot of female rap over a dance beat so this stood out in that regard, and Amy has some good lines in it. It's fairly generic in its structure but it's a great carefree dance tune. The horn(?) riff over the drop adds interest too and the hook's fairly catchy.

Commentary

KSHMR & Sidnie Tipton got back together for another song, and almost at the same position they were last year with 'Extreme'. It's more on the 'pop' side of his output but still has his unique feel, and the drop particularly is a great listen. Not much to say about this really, it's just a good song. I prefer his softer productions these days, good as songs like 'SHIVA' are, although 'Carry Me Home' didn't quite do it for me and missed the chart.

Commentary

Selena appearing in two consecutive Thermo's hot hits EOY Top 100s... what is this timeline?! It also becomes Marshmello's second year-end Hot 100 appearance too, after 'Alone' 2 years back, making this his best UK hit to date (an unpopular opinion considering this includes his two UK top 3 hits). The production does feel like 'Alone' reworked for a more commercial setting anyhow, so that does help. I've given up on Marshmello the EDM producer, and Marshmello the rap producer isn't all too good either, but he can make a decent pop tune as this and 'Happier' prove. Selena's got a nice mature voice now too, so it's a shame she followed this up with the rather weak 'Back To You', and she felt a bit out of place on 'Taki Taki'.

I never expected this to end up in my Hot 100 of the year, but here we are. I saw it come up in my YouTube subscription feed and instantly had to check it out, being from meme king El Chombo who we hadn't really heard from since 'Chacaron' in 2006, and turns out this one is just as iconic. *.* Very much helped by its funny video, of course, of the dancing green alien which seemingly was a big meme in certain places but not in the UK as it didn't chart here, but the vid has nearly a billion views now so.. The song is a bop too, it doesn't take itself seriously at all. Oh and it's worth mentioning the reason it came back in the chart; Pitbull only went and did a https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMN3AtsXqA0!! Must say I prefer the original though.

Commentary

Another great trance song here, Ben Gold only appeared on my radar this year but he's done a few good tunes, particularly this one helped by Sivan's vocal. Armada Music has been my favourite record label by a long way this year, as I'm getting back into trance music properly. It has a great melodic drop, and there's not much else to say, it's just a great song.

Commentary

Noah Cyrus isn't someone I expected to end up in my EOY but she joined One Bit for this, and she's a rather competent singer in this too. Helped very much by its 'Drop the Pressure' sample (I loved that back in the day), One Bit turn it into a refreshing dance tune ready made to be a smash... so of course it stalled at #76 officially. It has the right flourishes to put it above many other songs in its genre anyhow, but they weren't able to continue that into their next single with Louisa which was a disappointment and didn't make the chart.
