Feeder - Seven Days in the Sun (2001)
Feeder - Turn (2001)
Feeder - Just a Day (2001)
Feeder - Borders (2012)

The last time I saw a music cassette outside of charity shops was Christmas 2007, when WHSmith randomly had a few old copies of Now 58 on the format marked down to £3. I bought it for the novelty value and was odd hearing songs so recent on a tape!

I think cassette singles were quietly discontinued in about 2003, albums carrying on a bit longer.

I literally have next to nothing commercially released on cassette anymore. But for posterity, I shall list them here:

- Busted - You Said No (or Charlie's tape as it was known. Quite rare now due to the fact it contains a B-side not released on CD or download)
- All Saints - Under the Bridge / Lady Marmalade
- All Saints - Bootie Call
- All Saints - Pure Shores
- Appleton - Don't Worry
- Madonna - What It Feels Like for a Girl
- The Beautiful South - Blue is the Colour / Quench

I do however have a whole box of 'home recorded' cassette tapes dating back to as recently as 2007 when I abandoned the format. Largely consisting of interviews with bands I loved on different radio shows (and also a squeaky voiced 17 year old me talking to a local DJ from about 2006).

I think cassette singles were quietly discontinued in about 2003, albums carrying on a bit longer.

It seems to me that different labels phased out cassette albums & singles at different times (in the UK)!

A couple of examples: Virgin released Melanie C's single Here It Comes Again (February 2003) & the Reason album (March 2003) on cassette, but opted against a cassette for the singles On the Horizon (June 2003) and Melt/Yeh Yeh Yeh (November 2003). Whereas Girls Aloud's Polydor label issued cassettes for Sound of the Underground (single), No Good Advice, Life Got Cold and Jump (December 2002 through to November 2003), but didn't release their Sound of the Underground album on cassette (SOTU was released on CD only in May 2003). I'm pretty certain that Jump is the most recently released cassette single I own!

I agree that late 2003 seemed to be the final moment for cassette singles. Their phasing out seemed to directly coincide with the widespread introduction of "2-Track & Maxi" CD formats in January 2004? (I say "widespread" because Virgin/EMI seemed responsible for starting this, as early as summer 2003! Other labels such as Universal didn't get on board with this until 2004).

In regards to cassette albums, they certainly seemed to become far less widely available or issued in 2003, and possibly not around at all in 2004 (apart from compilations)?

I find it intriguing that modern albums are being released on cassette! I wouldn't have guessed they'd hold much retro appeal, but seemingly there is a niche market for them.

Ah yes I forgot GA had their first four singles on cassette. Thank God their label saw sense to have 'Lights Music Camera Action' on the European CD single of 'Life Got Cold'.

Just interestingly as well. I was having a look on Busted's Discogs page a few weeks ago now. Whilst history records they were the last band to release a UK number one hit on cassette, it wasn't with 'Crashed the Wedding'. It was with 'Who's David' - only 100 copies were made available for pre-order so it's like the holy grail of rare releases by them! https://www.discogs.com/Busted-Whos-David/release/7871723

I still have hundreds of cassettes which I play in my car regularly, although I find as time goes by they start to break with increasing regularity (latest casualty was yesterday - Aerosmith's "Nine Lives" from 1997 - I was just thinking how it was 20 years old, when SNAAAPPPP) ohmy.gif

Didn't Feeder have the number 1 vinyl with "Borders"?. My other half is a huge fan and has everything they have released, bar a few white label pressings that are far too expensive for him!.

He's dragging me over to Chepstow for their homecoming gig this weekend, any excuse for a holiday!. It will be my first time seeing them and his 50th.

Nice band who also are doing their bit to try and create a niche collectors market for cassettes, like the one we have right now for vinyl.

He also likes Mansun and Paul Draper; he bought his album on cassette, vinyl and limited edition 3x CDs

You can pick up a new cassette player for around £20. Sony Walkmans seem to vary from £30 all the way in to the hundreds!

Aldi stocked a Boombox last month for £25 I think it was and I wish I had got hold of one. I hope they have them on Special Buy again soon!

Have you seen this boombox? Looks very retro.

Recent additions:

Elton John - The Very Best Of (double cassette)
Some rare Egyptian cassette I found in my parents' collection [It's like this, but with a different cover and possibly different artist (https://www.discogs.com/%D8%AC%D9%88%D8%A7%D9%87%D8%B1-%D8%AA%D9%84%D9%8A%D9%81%D9%88%D9%86%D9%83/release/4102393)]
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Update: I managed to find it. It's تليفونك (Your Phone) by Jawaher.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Bought from Oxfam:

Oasis - Definitely Maybe heart.gif
Pixies - Surfer Rosa (Fun Fact: Yannis Philippakis of Foals mentioned this album as his 'modern classic' in the Q Magazine 30th Birthday Issue)
REM - Automatic For The People [yellow cassette]
Sonic Youth - Dirty
Wham! - The Final (double cassette with long case)
Grace Jones - Nightclubbing

Not sure about the vinyl #1, but they definitely got the year end and weekly cassette #1! I didn't make it to Chepstow, though I hear the set list was virtually the same as the ABE tour sets. I'm gonna order tickets for The Best Of tour tomorrow though, hope to hear some different tracks thrown in!

I don't think it'll grow to be a thing. Cassettes were an inferior format to other forms of recording such a vinyl. I really don't know why anyone would want to resurrect them

I used to have lots, but gave most to charity shops as I replaced them in CD.
I've kept some, and quite a few cassette singles that I'd find it harder to part with. I know I should part with them, as they're boxed away...but I've got rid of some before and then regretted it.
I had thought that cassette singles were a brand new thing in the 1990s - I'd never seen nor heard of them before, and then in the mid 90s, I bought some cassette singles from a car boot sale, that were from 1987. Just how far back to they go, I wonder ?
