Definitely missed having a Christmas special more than I expected - and the decision was a bit of a kick in the teeth for Moffat who wrote certain specials (namely The Return of Doctor Mysterio and Twice Upon a Time I think) just for the purpose of keeping the Christmas Day slot for the show.
Still at least it means we still have an episode to look forward too (and the only one of 2019  ) - the trailer certainly looks promising as well as the nearly almost certain return of the deadliest creature in all the universe the pting!!!!!. The Battle of Ranks whatever meant a more underwhelming series went out with more of a whimper so let's hope we get the real big action finale here. Especially as we have a potential/guaranteed actual THREAT (that isn't Tim Shaw, or .... a frog on a chair)

This actually looks like it might be the most action packed episode of this era yet.
Hopefully it will be the season finale we deserved!! |

Wow, What can I say about this episode, it had everything, suspense, gripping, non stop action and probably the best Dr. Who special, for a long time. I was glued from start to finish, never a dull moment, it exceeded my expectations. I really like the Dalek, it was taken back to the original series, the look of it, but more robust. They had to be bring back the Daleks, as the series really lacked regular enemies of the Dr. Probably my favourite episode, it just edged it over Rosa. The perfect ending to a new era. Now we have have a full year for the new series

THAT is how you do it! I was so excited for the Daleks, for the first time in about 10 years, and it wasn't at all disappointing. The entire concept felt fresh, bringing something new to the Daleks while reaffirming just how terrifying they can be. Jodie was at home as the Doctor, too. The first episode where she's faced a genuine threat.
The scene with Ryan and his dad in the café was good for character development and I really liked that the extra 10 minutes allowed for more of that, giving the plot some breathing space, but at the same time, I'm not sure I was that convinced by either of them in that scene  nevertheless it wasn't enough to impact the overall episode and maybe I'm just on a high after watching it, but I think that's my favourite Jodie episode to date (overtaking Rosa)....!The UNIT part...  I got way too excited that Kate was going to appear ffs

I must admit I wasn't really keen on the more character-driven moments, like Ryan and his dad talking in the cafe for about 15 mins, but besides that I can't fault anything about the episode. I was very skeptical about Chibnall's take on the Daleks, but what a perfect re-introduction. I'm glad he didn't shy away from showing just how merciless a killer the Daleks (unlike Moffat). Leaves me wondering how it's taken him until his sixth episode in charge to give us something like this though, but if it's a sign of what's to come then that can only be a good thing! I've fallen in love with Jodie more after that episode too - it really proved how brilliant she is and can be as the Doctor.  I cackled at the scene with the family when the WiFi stopped working

Yessss, that was excellent, quite comfortably the best episode of the Whittaker/Chibnall era so far. You can never go wrong with Daleks, they got a bit overused at one point but I think the real absence of a convincing villain this series made them feel so refreshing (or one, I would've quite liked to see the fleet, but hey, they'll be back at some point). It was so good actually feeling gripped to what was happening and there being a genuine threat that was very dangerous and wasn't vanquished with one deus-ex machina. For a change, it was actually quite well paced, though I honestly could've done without the Ryan's dad stuff as it did feel like it distracted from the main plot a bit, I can see that it gave them a bit more development but the scenes with them were easily the worst, the TARDIS was way too overcrowded too, I hope they can work on that as the main companions feel underused let alone episode-centric ones. The UNIT phonecall was...a choice
Really good overall, just a shame it took all series for Chibnall to finally get it almost completely right! But it's given me hope that he can get it right for 2020 (oh man the realisation of the wait D:) |

I agree with the comments, needed 10 minutes lopping off (the eastenders-styled whiny segments) and a better episode would have emerged. You would have thought travelling time and space for a bit might give you a better perspective of human fallibility and forgiveness (of his dad), and the Doctor was a bit judgemental pointy-finger I thought, given the amount of wrong decisions, and running away from his/her companions unable to deal with emotions, death and whatnot he/she has done over the course of hundreds of years. Hypocritical much....!

That was a great episode, much better than anything else so far this era. On the one hand I'm glad they saved a big villain story like this for a special but on the other hand it's a bit annoying because there was a long run of dud episodes before this where I lost interest :/ Once again Ryan has proved that I don't want him in the Tardis anymore
At the end I was actually hoping he'd try grab his dad and they'd both fall out of the Tardis tbh, but that wasn't gonna happen. Also there wasn't really high stakes to that whole scene because no WAY would the BBC make this kid an orphan for the third time after both his mum and his gran... I didn't really like the Wi-Fi scene with the family either or the UNIT phonecall which was just a bit silly and not believableAn otherwise great episode though and definitely my favourite from this year. Charlotte Ritchie was a great guest star too, I loved her in Fresh Meat as Oregon and I actually had no idea she was going to be in this which is how I prefer guest stars tbh. Her & the guy having chemistry early on was nice but just made that fact that something would obviously happen to one of them all the more predictable but at least Chibnall didn't kill off anyone this time |

This was the best one yet and felt like Doctor Who again, though I really wish they'd have killed off Ryan and his dad (and they spent too long on that side story). He's the clear weak link in the main cast and I think 4 main characters is too much anyway.

I am so surprised that everybody seemed to really like this episode. I was so bored and frustrated throughout. Maybe it needs a second watch to fully appreciate it, but I can't bring myself to sit through it a second time. I just hate the way that Chibnall writes for the Doctor; it distracts me from everything else.

This is one of the best episodes of the Jodie Whittaker era so far. It was gripping and action-packed. I really enjoyed the story. I was really worried they were going to kill Aaron near the end so I am glad that they managed to save him before he got pulled out of the tardis.

Consolidated figure of 6.96m, so a nice jump from the overnights but still one of the lowest overall figures of all 11 episodes.
Obviously not an outstanding figure but stable at least.

Definitely agree that this was more of a return to form although I still wasn't really blown away by it as I'd hoped. The two guest characters were very strong and would probably prefer them to be the companions over the ones we have oops. Yaz once again left with nothing to do and Ryan is just hard to get excited about - I really was bored during that dad cafe scene despite it being character development and Ryan probably saying some very serious things, it just seemed to really detract from the story especially when his dad has only been briefly mentioned throughout.
I did enjoy the darkness and the Dalek being free from it's armour and controlling the woman and actually a really good idea to create it's own armour! Although another female welding scene to make alien technology - is Chibnall trying to encourage more female welders? Enjoyed the larger scope too - hopefully it continues with the next series as we get bigger threats. I had to watch this episode a few days after NYD and so one of the few things I'd seen was the whole funding being pulled from UNIT - I'm going to glance over that for now and hope it was just a passing remark, especially as it says funding suspended pending review rather than completely disbanded as I was initially led to believe. You can't take away such a massive part of the show's history like that when it doesn't really have any bearing on show to take it away. It seems ridiclous too for it to randomly have all its funds suspended considering it has the Black Archive under the Tower of London and had the jets and bases etc seen in Death in Heaven/the Zygon episodes - you don't go from all that to nothing at all, especially when the Zygon's are an ongoing threat needed to manage. Also that wifi scene was cringy and not needed~ |
