BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Friday Chart Predictions

Posted by: Mart!n 17th September 2016, 08:31 AM

Looks like another static top 5 this week, with Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj in the mix as well. James Arthur is looking for a top 10 peak, coming out of nowhere. There are new entries for Calvin Harris with 'My Way' and the long awaited single from Emeli Sandé with 'Hurts' taken from her second studio album 'Long Live The Angels' to be released come November and hopefully Years & Years could just scrape a brand new hit with 'Meteorite' taken from the Motion Picture Soundtrack album to "Bridget Jones's Baby" movie and Kanye West with 'Fade'.. And new peaks from offaiah with 'Trouble' and Matoma & Becky Hill with 'False Alarm'.

Bastille could hold the #1 album for a second week, new releases this week seem very poor, from Usher 'Hard II Love', MAC MILLER 'The Divine Feminine', Die Antwoord 'Mount Ninji and da Nice Time Kid', Young Guns 'Echoes', AlunaGeorge 'I Remember' along with Led Zeppelin and Shakin' Stevens. Mercury Prize winner Skepta with 'Konnichiwa' making a huge U-turn back up the chart, within the top 10.

Gaga is 39 on downloads. Streaming probably won't make that loads better. James Arthur is top dog.

laugh.gif at James being Number One in today's mids. Who would've thought it a fortnight ago?

Posted by: mdh 17th September 2016, 10:36 AM

It's not exactly a static top 5. James Arthur, Calvin Harris and Ariana Grande all have a chance to climb into it.

Posted by: Hadji 17th September 2016, 10:36 AM

James Arthur won't hang on although I want him to

Posted by: gavindeejay 17th September 2016, 11:01 AM

I'd like James Arthur to go to Number 1, not because I'm a fan of him or the song, but it would be good to have a new Number 1 instead of having the Chainsmokers outstaying their welcome like Drake and Major Lazer did. It's unlikely though as streaming will give the Chainsmokers a big advantage.

You're most likely right but SYWLG is the type of song that could keep growing and growing simply because it is the type of MOR ballad that is slow burning and hangs around forever - like Thinking Out Loud, Dancing On My Own, Jar Of Hearts etc. The fact it is already iTunes #1 with minimal airplay and promo suggests it could widen its lead this week if Heart/Capital get on board.

Posted by: SKOB 17th September 2016, 12:29 PM

Would be a miracle if Gaga stays in top 40, it's possible though with ok-ish streaming and video coming on Tuesday

I agree Bastille should be in running for top spot , The Beatles should hold well given related Film is on general release now.
As one X factor winner is doing well in Singles wonder whether another (Sam Bailey) can trouble the Top 10 given her previous Album got the top spot - can't even find in Amazon Top 100 best sellers at moment so chances not good. Both Usher & Led Zeppelin should enter higher.
Skepta should rise to Top 10 after Mercury Prize win.
Odd that Tinie Tempah moved away from releasing his Album this week as the competition doesn't look the strongest.

She had tweeted her excitement yesterday that the Album was at number 29 on the iTunes Album chart, I'm guessing that was close to peak position. At this rate she may struggle to break the Top 20 overall.

You know you've made it when you're 29 on the iTunes album chart. Even a band called THE HUNNA I've never heard of got to #4 :,)

I thought Sam would do well with her album but clearly not. She has album signings at HMV all week which will help - I streamed the album and it's surprisingly good.

Posted by: Hadji 17th September 2016, 05:33 PM

I don't mind albums spending multiple weeks at the top, only on the condition that there's no new releases, not when there's loads of new releases and None of them can topple it

Posted by: Ethan 17th September 2016, 05:40 PM

#5/6 is probably the ceiling, for james arthur's abomination, while it languishes outside the spotify top50 ~ still that's an incredible result for someone that washed up~

given the current state of churn at the top of the album chart, you wouldn't bet against a new #1~ heehee.gif

Posted by: Hassaan 17th September 2016, 05:45 PM

It'd be nice to see James at #1 as I really like the song. He'd be the first X Factor male winner to get a post-win #1 if he manages it.

I'm surprised he's held on as long as he has tbh, he's had an interview and 30 second clip shown on This Morning and minimal airplay.

Posted by: Bré 18th September 2016, 12:19 AM

My dad had Heart FM on in the car earlier and they are already playing James Arthur. I think he'll do just fine.

I don't think so, James Arthur is doing okay on streaming now (he's just outside the Spotify top 50) so I imagine top 10 this week is incredibly likely.

He's still too far behind on streaming. He'll be on the top 50 playlist; which will obviously help with the latter part of the week. However I reckon top 10/5 this week and then Number 1 next week.

Chainsmokers will have built up too much of a lead on streaming over the weekend

that's an amazing start for Calvin! He could potentially keep the #5 position too as he's already got off to a great start on Spotify too.

and if it interests anyone, new entries in the top 100 from:

58. Tom Zanetti ft. Sadie Ama (You Want Me)
65. Years & Years (Meteorite)
77. Twenty One Pilots (Cancer)
96. Wiley (Can't Go Wrong)
98. Jax Jones (House Work)

No AlunaGeorge in the top 40 albums?

That is one of the biggest injustices of the year. Maybe they should have released when 'I'm In Control' was in the top 40. It is one of the best albums of the year, period. To see it flounder when sales are so tragically low is heartbreaking.

Go Shaky! 😁

Time for Shaky to deploy some of the tactics that gave Rick Astley's Album a boost:

1. He is appearing on "Lorraine" tomorrow to talk about his new Album. Not quite 'Loose Women' but he may get a chance to show off his dance moves/twerking...
2. Record store signing - all ready done one this week (in Cardiff).
3. One Show appearance - done.
4. Radio Support - may be a challenge that one.
5. Hard-luck story about CD's not getting to store - needs to come up with something similar.

Top 5 singles look a bit fresh at the moment on the current mids, I think I have to agree with Joseph, James Arthur could be looking for a #4 placing with Calvin Harris at #5, glad to see Drake's single at #17, funny enough his album is also at #17. laugh.gif

No missing data (he is on 80% streaming sales so far this week) but the gap to #13 is only a few hundred - he should easily get back to at least 13 by the end of the week but his Top 10 run looks to be over!

At this rate he'll be out of the Top 10 by the weekend. [/Hadji]

Posted by: Đřßßř 19th September 2016, 08:38 PM

You never rule out the streaming power of One Dance, it may indeed slip out the top 10 but I can't see it being any lower than #11.

Posted by: Bjork 20th September 2016, 01:43 PM

don't forget Bruce's album is not a studio album but his 3rd or 4th Best Of... good thing it has some unreleased tracks so sure the hardcore fans will buy it... might even beat Shawn Mendes album, which I cannot see selling lots, but probably 12-15K will be enough for #1 next week

Posted by: liamk97 20th September 2016, 01:47 PM

Bruce will probably be quite comfortably #1 next week, I would guess with about 20k-30k. Passenger could possibly hold on to the Top 5 and Shawn Mendes might go Top 10 (surprisingly, his album is not in the Amazon Top 100 - I know it's charting just on pre-orders but new releases that are going to be successful are usually Top 40 at this point).

James Arthur now looking solid at #2, and Calvin should hold onto #5! It's touch and go for Emeli holding onto the top 25 this week though, could happen but could easily miss out.

Gaga now #44. One Dance #16, can't imagine it will get much higher (will definitely be out of the top 10 this week anyway)...

Posted by: Bjork 20th September 2016, 03:10 PM

I still can't believe it this time next week James Arthur could be in with a chance at the #1 spot. Who would have thought it drama.gif

Posted by: danG 20th September 2016, 03:17 PM

James Arthur was the 2nd best selling song of the last 24 hours, so it seems very likely now he'll keep hold of #2 especially as his streaming is now really kicking in (top 20 on Spotify).

Seems very likely it will be a future #1 too.

Doubtful, I think #12 is looking more likely for her right now, but maybe top 10 next week?

ALSO: we could be losing One Dance, Perfect Strangers AND Don't Let Me Down from the top 10 in one swoop ohmy.gif The first two will almost certainly be out, and it seems to be a battle between DLMD and In the Name of Love for #10 this week, and currently Garrix has a higher daily sales figure.

I'm just pleased Maroon 5's '7 weeks at #2' record looks safe cheer.gif

On another note, despite the huge sales drop, position-wise that's a fantastic hold up for Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, seeing as their last album went 3-23.

Sam Bailey dropping 3 places is a worry she will miss out on a top 40 position. Olly Murs is having a wonderful chart run but misses out on getting it to a top 10 hit status. Position aside, the single will have very good sales long term.

There's a very good chance they could get to #2 again! ohmy.gif If Nick Cave and Led Zeppelin sell at the same rate they did yesterday, Led Zeppelin will have only a 100 copy lead and I think they are much more likely to decrease their sales rate as the week progresses.

Funnily enough, despite this album looking to be a non-mover and the previous album dropping 20 places, both albums look set to experience a similar percentage drop of ~70% (Push the Sky Away: 23.1k/6.5k = 71.9%; Skeleton Tree: 22.9k/7k = 69.4%)

Posted by: Doctor Blind 20th September 2016, 08:00 PM

Yeah I'd say that is a pretty standard OA/OS drop for a rabid fanbase.
The Stone Roses dropped 17- 169 earlier this year, which I believe is now the biggest fall ever on the Top 200, they also fell 21- 135 with the follow-up.

Other embarrassing drops: Alex Day “Forever Yours” 4-112 (2011/12) and Leeds United “Marching On Together” 10-112 obviously some have gone straight out too.

Posted by: Mart!n 20th September 2016, 08:09 PM

Also 3 albums from the top 10 from last week KT Tunstall, Teenage Fanclub and Twin Atlantic have dropped massively, Teenage Fanclub is practically out of the top 75.

Decent rise for "A Moon Shaped Pool" back into Top 40 for Radiohead on back of (their fifth) Mercury prize nomination exposure.
Album of the year for me and whilst it has made it to Top twice it has only sold 157k which is a poor return compared to previous Albums Sales from them (admittedly from time when Album Sales were healthier).
A special edition box set will be distributed next week with 2 extra tracks , won't make too much difference to sales but hopefully new tracks get some airplay.

Wonder if Gaga has dropped further down or has improved on yesterdays #44

She is still at 44.

think sadly Emeli won't be in the play zone once the missing streams are added :/ she's doing ok on Spotify but not enough

Posted by: pippa 21st September 2016, 02:23 PM

James Arthur looks almost certain for number 2 this week based on the sales we now see. It would be wonderful if Emeli Sande can move into a top 20 position for its debut week.

Ouch at this woeful album sales, Bastille will likely make around 12,000-13,000 sales at maximum this week for number 1. Unfortunately, Sam Bailey's decline continues in the update as she is down a further place but i can all but hope she will stay top 40 officially on Friday.

She won't.

Emeli could well make the play zone, it's touch and go for her right now.

I hope she does make the playzone. It could even still be in the charts near Xmas because she'll more likely perform it on X Factor in November to promote her album

Hope Shaky can hold in the Top 20. Not bad for the biggest UK singles act of the 80's, only beaten by Madonna. smile.gif

Considering the release schedule (not Mothers Day like last time) and less promotion I suppose it could be a whole worse for Sam Bailey. Clearly a lot of those who voted for her on The X Factor have moved on. I do think she has a great voice but I don't know if there's a place in the market for her.

James Arthur looks like he'll be at no. 2, yes. Probably climbing to #1 next week.

That's actually pretty shocking, would never have expected it to be that low, especially when sales are this low mellow.gif

Posted by: 360Jupiter 22nd September 2016, 12:00 PM

Should've released it in tandem with a single; or even better, in festival season. Not sure if there's a big natural market for stadium electronica in late September as we move into FALL tongue.gif

Posted by: pippa 22nd September 2016, 01:59 PM

AlunaGeorge album deserves so much more. I am still shocked by its complete under-performance.

Posted by: Hadji 22nd September 2016, 04:45 PM

Will be shocking if The Weeknd can enter the top 40 tomorrow. Very doubtful but he'll be dead certain to enter next week

Posted by: JosephStyles 22nd September 2016, 04:46 PM

Won't even be close, he's not selling quickly enough on iTunes and no streaming will count for it due to the issue with Thursday streams.

Posted by: Bjork 22nd September 2016, 04:51 PM

Sia did amazingly for 3 days and missed, The Weeknd has a been out for 1 day and I'd say he's under performed big time, he has zero chances to go top 40 tomorrow, he might have sold 2K on itunes today... and probably he'll get a zero from Spotify for the charts cos they cannot deliver Thu data in time... so 2K is certainly not enough to get top 40, at this rate he might not even be top 100 lol

Posted by: mdh 22nd September 2016, 04:57 PM

I'd say he's a dead cert for top 10, next week. This will also mean it's the most consecutive weeks we've had a new entry in the top 10 all year. Yay.

Posted by: cqmerqn 22nd September 2016, 05:34 PM

Has there been any Thursday-releases which have charted the next day (Friday)?

Posted by: PeteFromLeeds 22nd September 2016, 06:12 PM

Bearing in mind Prince could only reach 65 after he died on the Thursday, I don't think any release could make the Top 40 after being released then.

Daft Punk reached #3 with less than two days worth of sales.

"One Dance" entered the top 40 with 3 days of sales during the streaming era so that holds the record

Posted by: danG 22nd September 2016, 07:29 PM

Get Lucky did break streaming records at the time so Get Lucky probably would've still debuted high in the streaming era, and obviously would spend ages at number one

Posted by: Đřßßř 22nd September 2016, 09:25 PM

Get Lucky would probably have only had 1 extra week at the top tho (the week La La La punctured Pharrell's stronghold at the top) cos Blurred Lines was HUGE on streaming too right? (Not certain on this mind)

Posted by: danG 22nd September 2016, 09:27 PM

yep Blurred Lines was a big streaming hit too (seems obvious that it would be) so that would've taken it down after it had its 5 weeks.

And then deny Icona Pop & John Newman #1s before Wake Me Up's explosion smile.gif
