HATECHART 2020

It's getting to that time now when we reflect on the year that has passed us. And let's be honest, there was a lot of stuff in the chart that wasn't all that good.

As the weekly hate chart stopped being a thing many years ago, the hate chart is now a yearly affair. Get your puke emoticons at the ready. mellow.gif Last year Anne-Marie became the first ever female to win as a leading artist with 'Perfect To Me', a song that was far less than perfect to Buzzjack. Could she win again, or could it be a return to the "top" for 6ix9ine, or perhaps someone new could do it?

The first batch of songs that got hated the least will be revealed this evening.

HATECHART 2020 | #51-55

51 20 Tate McRae - You Broke Me First
52 19 Sam Smith and Demi Lovato ~ I'm Ready
53 19 Powfu ~ Death Bed (feat. Beabadoobee)
54 17 Dixie D'Amelio - Be Happy
55 17 Little Mix - Not A Pop Song

Right at the bottom of the list we have Little Mix. Seemingly an odd inclusion for a Hatechart given that they're one of the most beloved acts on Buzzjack, they did however receive 5 nominations for promotional single 'Not a Pop Song'. Perhaps due to the song's title being a lie and it in fact being a pop song. It only had 3 votes in the end though which means they are in last place. So congrats girls on having the least disliked song on a worst songs list. Tying for points in 2nd to last is Dixie D'Amelio. Dixie is famous for being on TikTok and decided she'd use that platform to launch a music career. Well unfortunately for us the song wasn't very good, but at least it failed to reach the top 40. A song that most of you have probably actually heard is next to leave. Bedroom rapper Powfu won the TikTok lottery with 'Death Bed', a song (in)conveniently released right in the middle of a pandemic. It featured vocals from Beabadoobee albeit pitched to the point of non-recognition. Sam Smith has had an album cycle received better than their past two, with only one song making the list and it is in the bottom five too. Perhaps if it didn't feature Demi Lovato, it wouldn't be here at all. Finally, we have a Billie Eilish song.

yes come for You Broke Me First! It's not necessarily one of the worst of the year, but it wouldn't be here if it got a couple weeks top 10 and then popped off to ACR without saying goodbye. It's just overstayed it's welcome for something very average!

'Not A Pop Song' should be much higher but I'll accept that it's a surprise it was here at all x

HATECHART 2020 | #46-50

46 33 Sigala and James Arthur ~ Lasting Lover
47 27 Joel Corry ~ Lonely
48 23 Mabel ~ Boyfriend
49 22 Anne-Marie ~ To Be Young (feat. Doja Cat)
50 20 Maroon 5 ~ Memories

Starting off the top 50 we have Maroon 6 with "Pachelbel's Canon". The song has a nice sentiment but unfortunately sounds whiney and boring not to mention it stuck around in the charts for far too long. At least Spotify graced us with having their next single Flop with a capital F. Speaking of flops, 'To Be Young' appears next. The song despite featuring Doja Cat who'd just had a huge hit single only managed to scrape the top 75 for a week, perhaps giving Anne-Marie the wake up call that she'd need to make something better to get another hit. Mabel appears next with her 10th single from High Expectations, an album that is selling entirely on its own merits and not due to streaming playlists and new Track 1s every other month. 'Boyfriend' was another 'Don't Call Me Up' rehash which isn't what we really want from her now, but not really worth hating either. Joel Conely with 'Lorry' is also in the bottom 10, thankfully as it's actually very good in my opinion - perhaps controversially I prefer it to 'Head & Heart', basic as it may be. One of my least favourite Dance hits of the year is thankfully higher although by just a place, 'Lasting Lover' in no thanks to James Arthur's vocals and Lewis Capaldi's Pen grew off me very fast and Sigala can do much better too.

HATECHART 2020 | #41-45

41 43 Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber ~ Stuck With U
42 40 Matt Lucas ~ Thank You Baked Potato
43 37 Live Lounge Allstars ~ Times Like These
44 36 M1llionz ~ B1llionz
45 34 Shawn Mendes ~ Wonder

Just escaping the bottom 10 we have Shawn Mendes with 'Wonder'. The song had over half its points total given to it by cqmerqn who is the first to lose their #1 hated song of the year. I'm no fan of it but he's certainly had worse. Like the Justin Bieber collab that I hope people remember to nominate this time next year as that just missed the cutoff. Next is one of the many minor rap hits of the year and one I'm surprised enough people remembered and disliked. M1llionz was one of the many drill rappers who got a hit seemingly out of nowhere in 2020 with a song about how he's going to change his name to B1llionz once he actually lives up to his current rap name. The song has a rather annoying sample in the background which may have helped it get some points too. 2020 was also not just the year of drill but the year of the charity single making a comeback thanks to a little microscopic thing called the coronavirus. This was responsible for a group of performers virtually coming together under the name Live Lounge Allstars to cover the rather apt 'Times Like These'. Around the same time we also had a PSA about hand washing from a baked potato, which was seemingly only slightly worse. However getting even more points than those two is... Buzzjack darling Ariana Grande?! Well indeed her Lockdown inspired single gets enough points to just miss the top 40. It is also the first of five appearances for Justin Bieber, so I suppose it's him who is really responsible for this being here.

HATECHART 2020 | #36-40

36 55 Salem Ilese ~ Mad At Disney
37 50 Demi Lovato ~ I Love Me
38 47 Niko B ~ Who's That What's That
39 45 Lewis Capaldi ~ Before You Go
40 45 DJ Khaled ~ Popstar (feat. Drake)

Let's continue with the top 40 then. First up we have DEE JAY KHALED and the first of 4 appearances for Drake. Justin Bieber also mimes the song in the music video so it is another song he's somewhat involved with too. It's a song that got boring for me quite quickly thanks to it having no melody. Lewis Capaldi decided that 2020 was bad enough without him releasing any new music on top of everything else we've had to go through. However that didn't stop 'Before You Go' from continuing to be a hit throughout the year having been released just after the cutoff for last year's hate chart. The song however wasn't quite as overexposed as 'Someone You Loved' so it only sits at #39 here. A place above we have Niko B with novelty rap song 'Who's That What's That' which has some rather bad lyrics placed on top of a fairly uneventful beat, clearly it had meme potential but I didn't like it and thankfully his follow-up did nothing. Demi Lovato is here again with her solo single 'I Love Me' which features her trademark wailing, and to top the section off we have one of the years' many minor TikTok hits this time a bad song about Disney as Salem Ilese clearly wished her life was a fairytale.

I don't particularly care for that salem ilese song (from what I remember of the 1 or 2 times I listened to it) but I'm surprised enough people have even heard it enough to have formed an opinion for it to place this highly. 'I Love Me' was pretty meh, I like the other 3 songs in that section. x

HATECHART 2020 | #31-35

31 62 Pop Smoke ~ What You Know Bout Love
32 59 Eminem ~ Those Kinda Nights (feat. Ed Sheeran)
33 58 Conan Gray - Heather
34 57 Tion Wayne ~ I Dunno (feat. Dutchavelli and Stormzy)
35 55 DJ Khaled ~ Greece (feat. Drake)

Khaled Khaled and Drake are back again with 'Greece' being deemed slightly worse, most likely because it was a bigger UK hit. Although I suppose Drake's helium vocals were enough to put people off right from the start. Tion Wayne is here with part 2 of 'Keisha & Becky' which also introduced Dutchavelli and his sore throat to the chart. At #33 is the only non-rap song of this section, as TikTok decided one Harry Styles wasn't enough and got Conan Gray into the chart, although unfortunately it was with 'Heather' when he had a semi-decent song in 'Maniac'. Back to rap now at #32 with Eminem who started 2020 with a surprise album drop. Impressively he only has one track deemed bad enough to make the list which I believe is an improvement from his previous album. Anyhow, it is of course the Ed Sheeran collab that is here as we were all sick of him by the time this came out. Thankfully, he had took the rest of the year off. Pop Smoke is also here with 'What You Know Bout Love', a track that I don't have any strong feelings for. He has one more track left in the running.

No idea what that Disney song is & have no desire to find out!

Heather is one of the worst songs I've heard all year. At least it didn't hang around the top 40 for long.

HATECHART 2020 | #26-30

26 70 Tory Lanez ~ The Take (feat. Chris Brown)
27 68 Jawsh 685 and Jason Derulo ~ Savage Love (Laxed - Siren Beat)
28 68 Internet Money - Lemonade (feat. Gunna, Don Toliver and Nav)
29 66 Justin Bieber ~ Intentions (feat. Quavo)
30 66 Jason Derulo, Puri and Jhorrmountain ~ Coño

2020 saw the revival of Jason Derulo's career thanks largely to him jumping on TikTok trends, two of which are in this section. At #30 is the track 'Coño', named after... the Spanish swear word for the female genitalia. Not really what we want to hear Jason singing about clearly, it thankfully didn't take off too much in the chart missing the top 40. His actual big hit of the year in 'Savage Love' ends up slightly higher probably only because it's more well known, although that cheap sax hook quickly got annoying and it does sound very novelty. Justin Bieber is here again with what became his biggest hit of the year in 'Intentions', a fairly boring track with some rather bad lyrics but ultimately not even in his worst three of the year according to Buzzjack. Internet Money's breakthrough hit and "fake" #1 'Lemonade' also attracted enough dislike to end up in this middle section. The song has some rather uninteresting rappers but ultimately is an alright song really helped by a decent hook and guitar riff. Finally we have Tory Lanez & Chris Brown, two people I'm sure most of us would be happy to never see in the chart again. Their hit 'The Take' was ultimately too explicit for even Radio 1 to attempt an edit of for the chart show.

HATECHART 2020 | #21-25

21 77 Sam Fischer ~ This City
22 75 Surfaces ~ Sunday Best
23 74 Jubël ~ Dancing in the Moonlight (feat. Neimy)
24 74 JP Saxe ~ If The World Was Ending (feat. Julia Michaels)
25 73 Drake ~ Chicago Freestyle (feat. Giveon)

It's hello to Drake again but this time with one of his slow and moody tracks in 'Chicago Freestyle'. I don't mind this but don't really get much enjoyment out of it either given just how slow it is. Speaking of slow songs, JP Saxe and Sam Fischer say hi. The streaming playlists decided they needed some no-name singer songwriters in the chart given the lack of new music from Ed and Lewis so we were 'gifted' with their efforts. 'If The World Was Ending' had the added bonus of being perfectly timed to coincide with a global pandemic. Dance cover versions made a big comeback this year with some being deemed better than others. We have three in this hate chart with the first being 'Dancing in the Moonlight', a tropical house song that sounds like it could've come out a few years ago... because that it indeed did. I quite enjoyed it actually but I get why it was one of the least regarded of its kind. Finally we have another one hit wonder TikTok boosted song from Surfaces with one of my personal least favourites of the year 'Sunday Best', it really should've been at least top 20 just for how BAD the singing is.

If The World Was Ending was my 18 points I believe. Such a melodramatic depressing song and also only made it big because of COVID. Plus there are way too many non-descript 'JP ...' white male artists doing nothing to the world.
