ORIGINAL POST:

My debut entry for the Buzzjack Song Contest is "Into You Veins" by Five Iron Frenzy:

A ska/ alternative rock track that I'm hoping is catchy enough to rack up some points! I love the track and I've recently been getting into the band's newest album as a result (and looking into getting some of their older ones). Hope you all enjoy!

(Also planning to add a bit more info about the country at some point.)

EDIT: Fixed video.

EDIT2: Added cities to this post for aesthetics.

Deandria would like to wish Aelandor the best of luck in their first contest cheer.gif This song is catchy indeed, hopefully it will leave enough of an impression.

hi.gif A big warm welcome to you in your national thread Aelandor, from Jadakissnia! I look forward to hearing your debut.

Aelandor is delighted to be in the fantastic BJSC for the first time and of course wishes all other entries the best of luck.

Welcome to the contest Aelandor. Vote for me because nepotism if you like my song cheer.gif

This is an interesting first entry, nearly as weird as Cat Empire but a bit more rocky.

Posted by: Jacob Alan May 24 2016, 02:04 AM

Our first entry was a DNQ but it had its supporters and the people of Aelandor are optimistic about their future in the competition. With a newly designed flag we're excited to have taken the first steps towards becoming an established nation of the Buzzjack Song Contest.

Posted by: Mattias May 31 2016, 09:27 PM

Deandria very much approves of Aelandor's flag *.* Very well executed! Too bad about starting the contest with a DNQ, but looking forward to hearing your future entries!

Posted by: Bré May 31 2016, 10:11 PM

Oh yes I really like that flag! (Thanks for actually making a flag kink.gif)

Posted by: ℒ𝓲𝓷⻤ May 31 2016, 10:36 PM

That flag! wub.gif

I'm excited about what you'll bring to the next contest, I have a feeling Aelandor could well be one of my favourite BJSC nations at this rate! happy.gif

Posted by: Jade May 31 2016, 11:15 PM

Great flag there Jacob *.* and thanks once again for the points! fabulous to already get points received from you off the ground <3

Posted by: Jacob Alan Jun 1 2016, 01:30 AM

Glad to see so many people like the flag! It's just something I drew up in paint.net in around half an hour after experimenting with ideas for around an hour right after the semifinal results and I had "BOO no flag" (or something like that) in place of where a flag should've been for my result, so I wanted to make sure I had something for the final. laugh.gif

I'm looking forward to the next contest too! Not 100% on what I'm entering yet but hoping whatever it is has a better chance of qualifying.

It was a good song! It's been reaching the lower parts of the Aelandorian charts because of the contest.

Posted by: Jacob Alan Jun 13 2016, 11:09 PM

Aelandor's 2nd entry is "Nostalgia" by Said The Sky.

Despite the non typical BJSC sound the people of Aelandor have already pushed Said The Sky to the lower reaches of the Aelandorian top 40. Could this be our qualifying song? *DNQs*

Posted by: spun Jun 13 2016, 11:12 PM

Said the Sky biggrin.gif I've liked a couple of their tracks I've came across, including the remix of Fireflies kink.gif

Posted by: Bré Jun 20 2016, 09:51 PM

'Nostalgia' has just grabbed me much more on second listen <3 Perhaps as I knew the big dubstep part was coming haha. Fingers crossed this can be your first finalist.

Posted by: Jacob Alan Jul 4 2016, 01:18 AM

Aelandor's "Nostalgia" by Said The Sky came crashing out at 28th in BJSC 85's Semi 2. But will 86 see us into the final?

Relying on emotions running high here, if you don't cry after watching the video and listening to the lyrics you're a heartless bast*rd.

I recommend listening to the mp3 I sent as well as the video, the outro especially has an extra lift on the album version (youtube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7yuaAEWIwI). #pleasevote #prayforAelandor

Posted by: Mattias Jul 12 2016, 02:02 PM

Brass *.* The video was also very moving, as well as the song of course.

Good luck!

Posted by: Jacob Alan Jul 17 2016, 09:05 PM

DNQ again but getting close now! Already planned next month's entry, not sure whether or not it'll be a hit but I'm sure I'll get a finalist eventually. laugh.gif

If not, maybe I can go for some DNQ streak record.

Posted by: princess_lotti Jul 17 2016, 09:06 PM

THIS WAS SO UNJUSTIFIED sad.gif if only we were in the same semi!

Posted by: Jacob Alan Jul 17 2016, 09:13 PM

I knew it might be close and I thought I might just sneak this one through but alas not to be this time. Thanks for the support though!

Posted by: Jacob Alan Jul 26 2016, 12:05 AM

Already decided on my next entry! I'll hold off posting it until teh reveal.

Posted by: Jacob Alan Aug 8 2016, 10:48 AM

Aelandor's 4th entry is "Man On The Street" by Imperial Leisure, a ska/ rock band with hip hop influences. I saw these guys live once and they were a blast! It's a slight deviation from our usual (although already highly varied) sound and I hope you guys enjoy! cheer.gif

Posted by: Jacob Alan Aug 22 2016, 01:07 PM

Ok next one's been planned for a while, not sure how well it'll do but I've just got to enter it. I've also got a really hopeful one planned for 89, it's pretty obscure but I'm still terrified someone's going to enter it it's that good. laugh.gif

So hyped from the subtitle of this thread alone

Posted by: Jacob Alan Aug 22 2016, 11:36 PM

Glad you think so Lindsey! I'm pretty sure you'll like my next 2 too (can't be sure of course but I think they'll appeal to your taste). Thanks for the 10 in the semi btw. wub.gif

Yess Jade, I really hope you like this one even if it's just for the lyrics. #hints

Who's that crazy cat?

Posted by: Jacob Alan Sep 12 2016, 10:39 PM

Slightly frustrating to DNQ yet again but oh well, I'd rather DNQ with something I like than Q with something I don't. That said I think I may be able to tick both boxes next month, don't want to speak too soon but I think it could be the Q. A little gutted because I thought this one might make it but I knew it'd be close.

Posted by: HarryEzra Sep 12 2016, 11:04 PM

I wanted you to Q this month the song was good sad.gif

Posted by: Jacob Alan Sep 12 2016, 11:09 PM

Thanks Harry! I don't think enough about the points I do get tbh. If any of my entries are discoveries for anyone then they're worth entering. happy.gif

Posted by: Riser Sep 13 2016, 04:47 AM

I live about a 40 minute drive from the city Relient K is from, I imagine they're the most local to me out of any artist ever sent to BJSC. ohmy.gif So I know a handful of their songs but hadn't heard anything recent until now. Shame this didn't qualify!

Posted by: Jacob Alan Sep 14 2016, 11:11 PM

Wow Jordan, that's a nice little stat! I'm a bit jealous actually because I've really wanted to see them live but they never tour outside the states. Yeah definitely check them out, if you're looking at albums I recommend either "MMHMM" or "Forget And Not Slow Down" to start off with if you only know a few. Maybe "Collapsible Lung" if you prefer more of a pop rock sound but the first two are my favourites. Although "Air For Free" is their new one (includes "Cat") and that's a pretty solid album too from what I've heard so far.

Bring on the rock/ grunge pop! I love it, enjoy and plz let me qualify. smile.gif

A part of the chorus reminds me a bit of a more rock version of "Faster Kill Pussycat"

I came 37th, not a great result honestly but I made the final and I'm happy with that, no idea what I'm entering for next contest so I may even showcase a few potentials here. happy.gif

Posted by: HarryEzra Oct 18 2016, 10:48 PM

Your song was fab *.*

Posted by: Jacob Alan Oct 18 2016, 10:55 PM

Thanks Harry! I loved my song a lot too was so I was really glad I got to the final with it. I was so chuffed to get three 18s, I love that it was such a major discovery for some of you. wub.gif

Posted by: Bré Oct 18 2016, 11:00 PM

This was a pretty underwhelming result for your first qualifier but at least it made it there!

(oh btw there were a couple of small mistakes in the semi positions for the past couple of contests so for the sake of accurate stats Imperial Leisure actually came 25th and Relient K were 28th - these should be reflected in the songs of thread the next time it gets updated lol)

Posted by: Jacob Alan Oct 20 2016, 01:30 AM

Thanks Bré, updated that now.

I'll be posting potentials shortly! All three of the songs I'm thinking of are very different to each other.

Posted by: LINDSΞY Oct 20 2016, 02:16 AM

It wasn't fair I just really love your songs and you deserve everything

The last one was already in BJSC (and came 3rd). x

Posted by: LINDSΞY Oct 20 2016, 08:25 PM

yea the third one was already sent but honestly the first two are both so solid, there's not much between them, maybe the second one just slightly edges it for me though but I do love both a lot ohmy.gif

Posted by: Jacob Alan Oct 20 2016, 08:26 PM

So it was, I thought I did a search, must've opened the wrong stat thread. laugh.gif

Well it was my least favourite. There's still two and I'll probably update the list shortly.

So Aelandor came 10th in the Country spin off with the absolute tune that is "Platform 7" by Mt. Desolation.

As a huge Keane fan I was looking for solo material while they were on their long hiatus and stumbled across Mt. Desolation. The band is an alternative rock and country side project for two members of Keane: Pianist and lead songwriter Tim Rice Oxley and guitarist/ bassist Jesse Quin with Rice Oxley taking lead vocals and while he has also done so on the occasional Keane song, (see "Sunshine and "Your Love"), he usually sings backing since Tom Chaplin (who has a fantastic voice tbf, one of my favourite vocalists) is the lead singer for Keane so Tim really gets to show off his voice here.

Their self titled debut (and currently only) 2010 album also contains contributions from members of Mumford & Sons, Noah & The Whale and The Staves- fun fact, Jessica Staveley-Taylor is the female vocalist on "Platform 7". It's a beautiful album, very different from Keane's music (with the possible exception of "Bitter Pill"), but solid throughout, I'd absolutely recommend listening through it, I very almost entered both "Departure" and "Another Night On My Side", if you liked "Platform 7" check those out if nothing else.

Huge congratulations to Unovia for their win with Miranda Lambert's "Oklahoma Sky", beautiful track and a deserving winner. wub.gif

I'm pleased to announce we've had our second qualifier! Thanks so much for all the votes for Copeland and let's see how far we can get in this one. ohmy.gif

Posted by: Jade Jan 22 2017, 06:34 PM

Well done Jacob! cheer.gif I actually thought this was going to DNQ so I was majorly happy to be wrong. One of your strongest to date for sure!

Posted by: Bré Jan 23 2017, 12:25 AM

Hopefully just the start of a much more fruitful year for Aelandor! I like this a lot, congrats on making it through again and fingers crossed it might do a little bit better than 'Pass Out' did.

Posted by: Jacob Alan Jan 29 2017, 10:01 PM

I don't really know what to say, disappointed barely covers it but at least it was a qualification in the first place. Thanks for all the votes and love (including two silver positions and a bronze!) from Taahino, Flynnonda, Persphonia, Jadakissnia, Land Of DW, Seyetana, Ultraviolenceland, Azure, Buzzjack Mountain and Medhelania, also to Florina and anyone else who enjoyed the entry and put it in commiserations, it was a quality final and it was fantastic to see entries like St. Burbia's and Pupok's do so well.

I hardly know where to go from here, I'll just stick with my planned entries for the next couple of months but after that who knows. However it goes I won't let BJSC change me, I'll change it or... keep DNQing/ flopping in the final. biggrin.gif

Maybe I'll break through eventually. #pray4Aelandor

It wasn't for my tastes this month but I'm so here for Aelandor finally having a hit. Next month pls...

Tbh I'm not super surprised at this doing badly, it was one I was expecting to DNQ as much as I really like it (my new favourite from Aelandor to date) - I remain confident that a proper Aelandor breakthrough can't be far away ;o Happy that it at least did qualify so I had another chance to throw you some points.

Posted by: Jade Jan 29 2017, 11:22 PM

A shame this didn't do a bit better but I was sadly expecting it. sad.gif At least it did make it to the final tho!

I was at least 70% sure I'd DNQ (nice and specific there) so I was really happy to get through and I suspected I was close to the borderline but when I did get through I started to believe my own hype a little especially with positive reactions and a few mid table predictions. Still I'm happy to have entered it because it's a song I've been properly obsessed with for a while and I'm glad you liked it so much!

Looking forward to next month now actually, it was going to be one of two entries but I think I've decided on which one it'll be. It's a departure from our usual sound but still some keeps elements of our usual sound for familiarity, plus it's one of my favourite tracks from early last year. Will be interested to see how it goes.

Posted by: Jacob Alan Feb 12 2017, 07:59 PM

Aelandor returns with funk/ electronic song from HONNE, a recycled artist actually, entered by PRoJ several contests back, it DNQed but I far prefer this one to what I've heard of Coastal Love, originally fell in love with this around a year ago because of the funky sound and smooth feel it has. I hope this makes a good discovery for some of you!

Posted by: Jacob Alan Feb 19 2017, 08:13 PM

Well that sucks a bit but I had a feeling it was borderline and it looks like I was just on the wrong side of it, huge thanks to Azure, Medhelnia, Kluminican Republic and Seyetana for the votes and especially Altyr Muunilinst who gave us max points in the semi. wub.gif

In a bit of a f*** BJSC mood now tho so next month will be a little more... subversive.

Posted by: The-BrightPlaces Feb 19 2017, 11:22 PM

me and Seven were discussing how much we loved this over the weekend! only if Trifoski had been in semi 1, it would have made it through sad.gif

Posted by: Jacob Alan Feb 19 2017, 11:36 PM

Aw yas, good to know- thanks Alanna, glad it was a good discovery for you both! I noticed in the predictions thread that FSR Rontvia liked the song too so maybe it was just wrong semi syndrome.

^^Archiving this until next month, it's definitely coming though.

For this upcoming entry:

Posted by: Jacob Alan Mar 13 2017, 01:25 AM

"You're a spark set fire"

Our new entry is "Dear Adelaide" by Breanne Düren, known for her work with Owl City and more recently a couple of solo EPs (and an older unreleased LP). This is actually Breanne's second entry since "Daydreams" was entered to BJSC years ago-- I actually got obsessed with that track at the time because of that so thanks whoever entered that! I've been following Breanne's solo material for a few years and this EP Gem is relatively new (2015), I contributed to the fundraiser for it and received a signed physical copy of it! I've only recently got into this EP in a big way and I was ridiculously torn between this, "Dizzy" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17kPL_mfL2w) and "Sign Of Life" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqkpmkjf044), particularly "Dizzy" which builds so well and is an absolute tune- it even has the lyrics "Oh you spun me like a dj, got me dizzy from the replay" which I thought would be so appropriate for this contest.

The only reason I switched was Dizzy takes a little while to build up to it's glorious peak (please listen to it if you're interested!!) and I sort of felt if I entered it it'd be a bit like that moment when you're showing a song you love to a friend and you're going "wait wait the best part's coming in a moment" and they're totally not into it. Like usually I'm not worrying too much about what people think but also your own entry is as much an opportunity to share a song as it is for yourself and I sort of decided "Dear Adelaide" was a better song for introducing Breanne (even tho Dizzy really got me into this EP but nvm).

ANYWAY, "Dear Adelaide" itself is a great indie pop track with lots of stuff in there, a good amount of banging synths with some lovely guitar decoration and a beautifully catchy chorus, the bridge/ instrumental section really got me with this one though so listen for that- hope you guys enjoy! wub.gif

Also the "clue" is because her EP is called "Gem". happy.gif

Posted by: Jacob Alan Mar 16 2017, 09:59 PM

80s spinoff:

In the spinoff Aelandor's entry is "Like Flames" by American pop rock and new wave/ synthpop band Berlin.
"Like Flames" is Berlin's follow up single to "Take My Breath Away" - yes that Take My Breath Away. It never gathered any kind of momentum missing the top 40 in both the US and UK and become a minor hit in Australia, The Netherlands and New Zealand before the band faded from the public eye. It's a proper banger though and I hope everyone enjoys!

Posted by: Jacob Alan Mar 19 2017, 07:48 PM

We're through to the final with Breanne Düren. cheer.gif cheer.gif cheer.gif

A huge thanks to all the voters. Can we beat our peak of #37? ohmy.gif

Posted by: Jacob Alan Mar 26 2017, 10:10 PM

So we've got a new peak at #36 (absolutely smashing our previous peak of #37) with Breanne's beautiful entry. A huge thanks to Trifoski, Aesthetica, Taahino, Azure, Quintessa and all our other voters, especially Aesthetica with that 15. wub.gif

I'm not expecting great things in terms of positions for our next entry but I honestly can't wait to see the reaction so there's no way I'm backing out. Beyond that we've got no plans for future contests so I'll be on the lookout for potentials for May onwards. ohmy.gif

Posted by: Bré Mar 26 2017, 10:30 PM

Well... a new peak is a new peak! laugh.gif If you follow the Dobago trajectory (ignoring all the DNQs kink.gif) you could be due for top 5 with your next qualifier magic.gif

Sorry this was your first qualifier I didn't vote for, but it was another pretty good song. x

I'm intrigued for your next entry. ;o

#AirshipRising
Time to resurrect this hint! I hope Bré's right about the top 5 of course but I somehow doubt it, this will be a risky entry. Can't wait to reveal this though, it's 5 years (ohmy.gif !) this month since I was so captured by the simplistic beauty of this track that I played it over 50 times in one day (can't remember the exact figure but it was in that ballpark) and somehow I still love it now. #neveroverplayed

Up Ship! - Port Blue

Port Blue is the ambient/ instrumental side project of Adam Young (of Owl City), his more recent instrumental scores are more reminiscent of his work as Port Blue. This particular track is a beautiful piano instrumental with a slow build of drums, synths and other interesting things in the background. Like I said in my previous post I became utterly obsessed with this track/ Port Blue a few years ago while I was doing A Levels, it's perfect for when I'm doing essay work because I find words distracting when I'm trying to write. With this track I'd say (if you can) please take the time to turn the volume up (because it starts very subtly) and pay your full attention to it, I sometimes listen to it while doing nothing else and despite how much I've heard it I've never been tired of hearing it. It's not going to be everyone's thing, I get that and I'm not necessarily expecting to qualify but I adore this track so I had to enter it, even if a few people make a great discovery it'll be worth it. wub.gif

Posted by: Bré 🐱 Apr 9 2017, 11:56 PM

Isn't this the song Iz sometimes uses at the start of his SoundCloud recaps for TBO to stop them being taken down? laugh.gif That artist/title combination looks very familiar!

Never knew that was Adam Young if so!

EDIT: Yes it is! I am very familiar with like the first 30 seconds of this already then, never listened to the rest of it, intrigued tho ~

so much that after the first 30 seconds I expect to hear the winner of BJSC from certain months

Posted by: Iz♀ Apr 11 2017, 08:10 PM

I did stop using it as last year Soundcloud didn't seem to be as arsey about it. But yes, I used it because it worked once and so I continued to use it.

This is more than the first 30 seconds though, it changes quite a bit as it goes, and it's pretty decent as far as Port Blue tracks go. I'm not so into the whole ambient thing so I don't often listen to them but the right track to enter from the project.

Posted by: Bré 🐱 Apr 14 2017, 01:42 AM

I guess that will have to be retired for good now that the song is actually a BJSC entry in its own right kink.gif

Posted by: Jacob. Apr 23 2017, 12:46 AM

Okay so a fairly underwhelming/ disappointing result for "Up Ship!" at #34, especially considering how much this track means to me (so I really would've loved to do well with it) and the fact that there were some much higher predictions for it but nevertheless, it's a new peak (again, marginally but #everylittlehelps) and at least we've started our first Q streak. No idea what I'm going to actually be entering next month (although I have a couple of potentials), will see what happens when it comes to confirmations.

Well done for Trifoski on your win and commiserations to Pupok for missing out on top 20, deserved so much more, stunner of a track. heart.gif

You didn't hear? I got through the semi at 20th on a tiebreak (more 12s) because of a clerical error- Chez's entry (great entry </3) was supposed to have 3 more points that accidently didn't get added on to Terra Avium's score. Chez gave me 12 (thanks Chez!) so at least it was something he really liked getting through instead of him, still feel slightly bad although his voting pm makes us even I think. x

This is a great track, if this doesn't become your best result to date then something really ain't right!

Posted by: Jacob. May 21 2017, 01:00 AM

Aw thanks Dobbo. wub.gif

So, "Tides" came 37th in the final, matching Soeur's position. I didn't go into the final with huge expectations and I'd kind of accepted that I'd be getting a position in the 30s or at best low 20s... that said it was revealed that we reached 4th position in our semi final which makes the final result rather odd? Maybe the song didn't have enough staying power for people and other "growers" overtook it, maybe I just got lucky with the semi and all the fans ended up in semi 2/ the entire opposite semi hated it, maybe the higher pointers from the semi gave their highest points to semi 1 countries (pushing us down a few positions) or people just don't like Aelandor and want to watch us crash and burn the 18 point system caused us to suffer.

Regardless, thanks for all the votes, particularly Lotunia giving us their 18 on their debut contest! Much appreciated, I know how valuable those 18s are. cheer.gif

Other high pointers off the top of my head include South Danaelanda (! second contest in a row, feels so rare), Zanmatony, Persephonia, and Jadakissnia, really appreciate the support. wub.gif

A massive congratulations to Suedeonia, an unexpected new winner with a fantastic song that only just missed our votes (Bleachers - Don't Take The Money), and honestly listening to it again I'm absolutely regretting it. I think it might have missed out for me due to the vocal style in the prechorus? Looks like they didn't need my points in any case, looking forward to a Suedonian contest. cheer.gif

I think it's probably mainly that first thing, it was a pretty good semi draw for 'Tides'. I'm personally guilty of the second thing though as you got my 10 behind Hugar in the semi, but ended up behind 3 songs from semi 1 in the final. Whatever the cause, semi results are just quirky like that sometimes ~ At least you definitely qualified legitimately this time!! laugh.gif

Yeah probably just a good semi for it and it had very few fans in the opposite semi, I think it appeals to a certain taste, if people like that chilled/ slow build atmosphere then they'll love it, otherwise they'll think it's just a bit long and doesn't go anywhere fast enough. Don't worry about that, a high score's a high score and I was happy to get them, besides you had some bangers at the top. x

Yas @ the point swap! Yours was so lovely, it many ways our entries this month were fairly similar, if comparing it to my entries, "Waves" kind of felt like a mix of "Tides" and "Nostalgia" and I love that sound. It was a medal position so I can hardly complain haha, thanks again. I was just trying to figure out how there could be such a disparity. :/

No worries, it was a fun discovery got me too, the first I've found when actively searching for BJSC entries (the others are either songs I already knew or songs I happened to hear/ listen to that caught my attention.

AELANDOR'S BACK, ROCK IS BACK AND SO IS RELIENT K:

In stark contrast to "Cat", one of their newer songs, this is a classiq RK song, released in 2001. This is perhaps more representative of their more "usual" style, although that does tend to vary from album to album in any case, much of their in between material has incorporates piano as well and lots of it covers much more serious topics than this but I can hardly enter their entire discography to BJSC (maybe "Who I Am Hates Who I've Been" one day tho xx). "Sadie Hawkins Dance" is a glorious pop punk rock track that for me encapsulates everything about that early 2000s pop rock era, it has Teenage Dirtbag vibes for me basically. Beautiful building guitar intro and a supremely energetic track, lyrics are very lighthearted, about a guy's experience of a girl asking him to a dance.

Expecting a flop, don't care- it's my first BJ Fest and I never expect to do well for my first try at any of these contests. xx

BJSC 96 // Lights - Giants

So I've known and loved Lights for years (after chance buying both The Listening and Siberia in early 2012 and getting obsessed with both sounds- she tends to up her game/ switch up her sound every album) and now I finally get to enter her into BJSC with her new single "Giants"! She's got one of the best vocals in pop I've ever heard and I'm not even exaggerating, this is after hearing her stripped down/ acoustic and live versions. So happy to have Lights represent Aelandor because she really does represent that side of my taste perfectly, I hope you all enjoy (and give me a new peak xx).

Posted by: TheBetterBrother Jul 17 2017, 01:01 PM

Lights came 5th!!! Obviously this completely obliterated my previous peak by comparison ("Up Ship!" at #34), I was even leading the scoreboard near the beginning and with the scores so tight between the top 5 I was in with a shot of winning right up until the final vote. Huge huge thanks to all the voters, like I said in my last post Lights is one of my favourite vocalists of all time and I adore her music so it means a lot to come so high with her. Not sure I'll ever come that close to the top again but we'll see. kink.gif

Also the tempo change isn't messy it's very deliberate!!1!11!!1 #queenofthetempochange

Posted by: Iz~ Jul 17 2017, 05:36 PM

well done and I'm claiming half the credit

Seriously though, the parallels between this and my last top 5, Blood, are quite striking. Close top 5 so not far off winning, airy voiced singer who was slightly cheap due to her previous entries, huge cinematic sound that would have made great sense as a winner, welcome to the top 5 club with a fab song x

Posted by: boo winged kitty Jul 17 2017, 09:07 PM

Well at least now we know an Aelandor hit can be a thing *.* I couldn't really get into this one as much as most of your entries unforch but well done on the top 5 anyways.

BJSC 97 // Billy Lockett - Old Man

I've been following Billy Lockett for a few years now and this has always been a standout track from him for me, his material before Old Man EP was largely acoustic guitar based but here in this track he went in a different direction, opting for wonderfully layered piano. The track itself is a tribute to his father who he had recently lost to cancer at the time of this track's release (2014), the lyrics really are quite moving. Sadly since releasing new material he took this track (up to and including this entire EP) down from all official channels and I only found this official video through a wayback machine and had to reupload it myself. I've got no idea why but I guess artists sometimes do that. It's unlisted on my backup YouTube now (the one tied to the google email I made for teams as it happens) and I'll make it public if needed for plug, however I'll likely take it down after the contest so hang on to the mp3 if you like the track!

Not expecting this to do enormously well but it's worth it bc I love the track- still hoping to qualify! Got a streak to maintain. x

Posted by: Jacøb Aug 6 2017, 10:37 PM

Billy Lockett has extended Aelandor's streak yet again bringing our record to 5*! This time last year I wouldn't have thought this possible. Maybe I should've entered this back then, I've known it for that long. laugh.gif

I'm so happy to have had such a positive reception, I didn't know what to expect when I entered but kind of expected to qualify after seeing the plug reaction/ predictions. Hoping to place somewhere in the mid 20s, posibly even teen in the final (still new territory for me position wise, having only placed in the 30s a few time, #40 once and more recently #5).

(*With an asterisk as Bré will never let me forget xx)

Posted by: Capybréra Aug 6 2017, 10:48 PM

The asterisk shall be forgotten when you DNQ again!! It's only there as a formality. kink.gif

Pleased this got through for you, mainly for the video which is really lovely (so yanno don't take it down etc.) but it is a very nice song too! It is very Kodaline as I believe Seven pointed out on plug.

Posted by: PeteFromLeeds Aug 12 2017, 08:36 PM

I really like this! Reminds me of the type of stuff I used to love in the 00s wub.gif

Posted by: Jacøb Aug 12 2017, 11:19 PM

Aww, yass Pete! I think it's a lovely song, I adore that big piano sound. wub.gif

Posted by: Jacøb Aug 16 2017, 12:12 AM

Forgot to post here yesterday but Billy Lockett came 20th in the BJSC 97 final, giving Aelandor their 2nd best position overall! Thanks for all the votes, particularly the medal positions, was so happy to see this song so well received. wub.gif

Posted by: Rob S Aug 16 2017, 09:02 AM

This was no grower for me at all, that piano playing and video instantly got to me. Lovely song to boot, so very glad I predicted you to be around 20th & then you came 20th in fact laugh.gif (was hoping it'd do even better but no big problem either way)

Introducing

BJSC 98 // C2C - Down The Road

I first heard C2C a couple of years ago amongst a file share my old flatmate gave me, and this was the best banger in there. I love the old blues guitar in the intro then the transition into the electronic + heavy production mixing of it. In a similar vein to Gramatik (who I sent to instrumentals-- he often does this kind of thing with jazz), this combines two sounds I really love in a beautifully non intrusive way. I hope you all like it too! x

Really digging this track ~ I see it was a big hit in France and a minor hit in a few other countries, I actually think it sounds like the sort of thing Radio 1 could have easily latched onto to give it a push here back when it came out!

Jade also played a couple of other C2C tracks on plug.dj after the semi 2 session as she had them as past potentials - 'Delta' sounded really good as well (quite similar to 'Down The Road')!

Posted by: Jacøb Sep 6 2017, 09:09 PM

Oh yeah I forgot to post it but C2C is through, extending our frankly incredible (compared to last year certainly) qualifying streak! ohmy.gif

I was kind of expecting this through based on odds and predictions but it was a relief to qualify nonetheless with 98 being such a large contest.

ADDITION AFTER CONTEST:

C2C came slightly lower than expected perhaps but 30th and in the final is still a whole lot better than most of our entries, particularly the early ones. laugh.gif

Introducing

BJSC 99 // Sœur - Slow Days

Our first self recycle (not including BJ Fest x)! Slow Days is from Sœur's EP "What Separates Us" (album art was my avatar for a while) which came out after I entered them into BJSC 89. I was kinda rushed at the deadline after being away so in retrospect I maybe should've entered "No Fire" or "Put You On" but I think Slow Days (like the band) is an underrated gem. It starts slow and builds amazingly well throughout the song.

Not sure if this'll qualify, Sœur did get me my first qualifier but it was a narrow Q and Pass Out was a bit more accessible perhaps, that said not all hope is lost- I've still got a Q streak to maintain and I can think of a few people who could well be into this. x

Posted by: Jacøb Oct 2 2017, 09:22 PM

Our Q streak is dead! sad.gif

"Slow Days" came 21st in the semi final, a mere 4 points off qualifying. To be fair, I didn't expect to qualify- I actually submitted this in the last few minutes before the confirmations closed because I only just realised it was the deadline and I just picked a song I'd really been getting into so I'm glad it was that close! Thanks for all the points and Aelandor will be back in full force for BJSC 100 (once I decide what I'm sending- it'll be good though x).

Posted by: Jacobites Oct 19 2017, 09:20 PM

Ok help please.

Hopefully that's varied enough. x

Honestly I'm really stuck, so any pointers are appreciated!

Introducing

BJSC 100 // Meadowlark - Headlights

I've been following Meadowlark since their formation and a couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to see them live! Meadowlark is a duo (formerly a trio) with piano, guitar and lots and lots of synths/ electronic drums. They had such an interesting set up live- atmospheric low lit light-bulbs surrounding the stage, a keyboard and analogue synth, electric guitar, several synthpads/ triggers and synth drums (those ones you hit with real sticks but aren't exactly drums) and running through Ableton (DAW software- I could see it from where I was standing). I met up with Liam and stayed at his that evening because I missed the last train back and he lives in Plymouth where I saw the gig... so appropriate entry considering he's hosting (even if this isn't his thing really- he didn't come to the gig laugh.gif ). "Headlights" is the opening track from their debut LP "Postcards" and for me it packs a punch, I think Kate's voice is absolutely beautiful and here is no exception. It has a slow build, gradually adding more throughout the song and hits at just the right moments. One of my favourites from them. Was very close to sending Pink Heart as well so check that out if you like Headlights!

Meadowlark has been entered to BJSC before with Family Tree (lovely song) and came 3rd so this entry has a lot to live up to! The lead singer Kate McGill also has a previous BJSC entry (from a long way back- before she formed Meadowlark) with Diamonds and Waste- that was how I discovered her (when Iz was playing it way back) then ended up following her music for years! I finally got to meet her after the show two weeks ago and she gave me a hug when I told her how long I'd been following her the sweetie. Got a signed poster (signed by Kate and Dan) + a vinyl as well. I'm a bit of a fan. x

Diamonds and Waste was also actually covered by Bastille (I think quite early on- possibly before they broke) and they do a great version of the song too (will link them both below).

BJSC Andra Chansen // Swimming With Dolphins - Silhouettes

Finally getting round to making a post for this! Huge thanks to Dalisska for entering ages ago. I have known and loved "Silhouettes" for years and when I found out it was a previous BJSC entry I jumped at the chance to re-enter it myself. There's a beautiful dreamy quality to the song (while it still manages to be really upbeat!) and that sound is starting to get nostalgic to me- the late 00s early 10s indie electronic thing that was around on the internet so much for ages. This song still gets me really emotional, I was listening to this and other tracks like it when I was first getting into music. I really hope some of you guys have made this gem of a discovery from this!

Also, Breanne Duren's vocals are featured in this (partial self-recycle x).

BJSC 101 // How To Destroy Angels - Welcome Oblivion

For those who don't know, How To Destroy Angels is comprised of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross from Nine Inch Nails, as well as Trent Reznor's wife Mariqueen Maandig (the vocalist for the band) and Rob Sheridan, the digital artist and photographer for the band. They have some similarities with NiN but rather than making industrial rock they make industrial dirty electronic music (listed as Post-industrial, experimental, electronica on the source of all knowledge that is Wikipedia). I found this album through a suggestion from my friend who's a big Nine Inch Nails fan and after listening through it once instantly fell in love with the title track (as well as the preceding track "And The Sky Began To Scream" - plz check that out too!). Welcome Oblivion has this grungey, dirty, glitchy sound to it and it perfectly fits with the theme of both the song and album. I adore Mariqueen's voice and love the distortion ever more (distortion is the best right?), this track is a work of ART. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do and give me all the points make a great discovery here!

Welcome Oblivion is indeed through to the final so thanks for the votes so far and plz give it all the final votes! heart.gif

I'm feeling pretty positive about this one tbh, expecting somewhere in the mid rankings but hoping for a possible low top 10? I'm so bad at predicting this kind of thing though so who knows? ohmy.gif

Flopped at 34th oops, one step closer to fulfilling my aim of hitting all the positions in the 30s at least twice. xx

BJSC 102 // Timecop1983 - Girl (Feat. Seawaves)

Like I mentioned in the reveal thread, I've been really really getting into The Midnight and I would've entered "The Years (Prologue)" had it not been entered in BJSC 69 and came 2nd, or perhaps "Crystalline" or maybe even "River Of Darkness (Feat Timecop1983)". ohmy.gif ohmy.gif ohmy.gif

The Midnight got me into this whole retro synthy sound, and while I initially found "Jason (feat. Nikki Flores)" through Masquerades last year (lovely lovely song, gave it +15), I never listened to any more of their music until a small YouTuber I watch, https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChEW9GCvlWiFLnopa-Ajomg (great music review channel, 10/10 recommend, made some amazing discoveries through this guy) did a review of The Midnight's EP "Nocturnal", and he reminded me of their existance, following that I went on a Midnight binge and now I have their entire discography. The only thing is with the Midnight, people know them in BJSC, they did so well already. It wouldn't be """my""" discovery for you guys and I was very aware of a possible veto. I was stuck for entries really this month and after watching the entirety of "Stranger Things" over the past few weeks I'd started hearing this retro sounding synthwave music everywhere again and was absolutely living for it as the soundtrack to an amazing show.

And what do you know, Timecop1983 has made music that was featured in Stranger Things episodes, that was the music giving me all the #feels. Here it is:

Unlike The Midnight, Timecop don't have a vocalist, they usually make instrumental tracks but they occasionally feature vocalists. While I love listening to the instrumentals myself, for a standout track to enter to BJSC (certainly in this genre) I wanted one with vocals really. I adore the dreamy, nostalgic (yet not?), lovely bubbly sound to "Girl" and the vocals from Seawaves are just the cherry on top, they blend perfectly with the track and I really think this collab was a match made in heaven. I hope you guys enjoy this track as much as I have and go check out New Retro Wave, it's the best thing ever! wub.gif

Next month we'll be returning to our more rocky roots with an absolute banger. Slightly reminiscent of early Muse perhaps. Lots of attitude, great grungey, garagey, blues rock sound. Fully accepting the possibility of a DNQ with it if I don't get a good semi because BJSC is hardly the crowd but I know for a fact some of you will love it. x

BJSC 103 // Moriaty - Esperanza

(It has a music video but it's not that interesting and it misses out the iconic spoken word intro)

Return to #rockbloc.

Aelandor's entry to BJSC 103 is "Esperanza" by blues/ garage/ heavy rock band Moriaty! I first heard them when I saw them live supporting Muse (along with The Marmozets- what a gig that was *.*) and they really were phenomenal. They're a Devon based band that Chris (the bassist from Muse) found online and obviously invited to support them in Exeter. I never got round to collecting/ listening to their music though until a few weeks ago and I can see why Muse liked them, a bassline like the one in "Esperanza" really reminds me of Origin Of Symmetry/ Absolution era Muse.

This banging tune features the aforementioned amazing bassline, rapping in the first verse, distorted vocals, Spanish in the chorus and a fantastic lil spoken word intro that got me into the song originally. Honestly no idea if people will like this but don't mind too much how it does (plz let me qualify x).

Insanely enough, these guys are a two piece. No idea how they manage to make this sound. ohmy.gif

Posted by: Jacob~ Mar 25 2018, 09:23 PM

Aelandor came last in the semi, which is a first for me actually! Even during my tragic early DNQing days I never came dead last. Received 21 points though so at least it wasn't anywhere near the dreaded unattainable 0.

Absolutely undeserved of course, Esperanza's beauty wasn't appreciated and BJSC is just wrong about most things especially considering some of the awful bland trash that sailed through, not exclusively in this contest either. Thanks for the vocal support though from the people that did like it, you're the best. heart.gif

Is okay though, I just tend to enter what I'm obsessed with and I was fully aware this would probably DNQ, might send a protest entry next month, might be fun, we'll see. x

Posted by: Bré Mar 26 2018, 01:48 AM

Bah humbug. Maybe you were right about it being the wrong semi, I feel like my intuition for what is and isn't the right semi for certain songs is completely backwards. But yes, last place for this is pretty ridic. x

BJSC 104 // Kiasmos - Looped

Better late than never! Kiasmos is actually another artist I discovered through that Tom White youtuber I mentioned a couple contests back. It has a lovely slow build and really pays off. I love listening to it when I need to ""chill"" for lack of a better word. I've been listening to their self titled album for months and Looped was (one of) the standout track(s) for me so I hope you've all enjoyed as much as I did! Really wasn't sure if I was going to Q so really happy I did and looking forward to seeing where I'll place.

Posted by: Jacob~ Apr 28 2018, 07:06 PM

Spinoff: 90 vs 00s

Not forgetting our 90s vs 00s song, Tiny Vessels from Death Cab For Cutie. It comes from their 2003 album Transatlanticism, and actually leads into the absolutely beautiful title track which I wish I could've entered along with this, if you get a chance listen to Tiny Vessels and the song Transatlanticism one after the other- they work together so well. As for Tiny Vessels itself, the lyrics are the thing that really hit home for me,

"So one last touch and then you'll go. And we'll pretend that it meant something so much more, but it was vile, and it was cheap. And you are beautiful, but you don't mean a thing to me"

Absolutely chilling, my take on it (and I guess if you read it closely it's kind of obvious) is it's about a relationship in which there's no spark but they try to force it anyway because they both want to feel it, and when they eventually split up they try to convince themselves there was something there at one time, but there never was.

The repeating guitar and beautiful atmosphere is absolutely perfect with the charged yet kind of numb emotion from Ben's voice, and that's not even talking about the climactic chorus. One of my favourite Death Cab songs easily, and I absolutely adore Death Cab. We came 20th out of 38 which I wasn't even necessarily expecting with the kind of audience we have in BJSC so thank you all you voters so much, especially Rollo and Suede who I remember gave us medal positions (including an 18 from Suede!). wub.gif

Our 90s alternative song was Cake - "The Distance", a moderately successful (in the US and kind of UK too!) hip hop/ rock banger so check that out too if you like that kind of thing, honestly it's such a tune!

Posted by: Jacob~ Apr 30 2018, 11:48 AM

Snaked out of a top 10 at the final moment, Kiasmos came in at 11th, which is still our 2nd highest hit ever in the main contest so huge thanks for all the votes everyone!!! Honestly I didn't have high expectations, not because I didn't love the track but because I didn't expect it to go down so well here. Glad it was a discovery for many of you including several medal placing and even a few 18s. Very happy with that result, looking forward to going to Niceland (presumably) next month. happy.gif

Posted by: Bré Apr 30 2018, 12:08 PM

heart.gif real shame this missed the top 10 at the last second, really looked like it had it! Was lovely to hear another song by Death Cab for the spinoff as well.

Have you heard 'So Close' by Ólafur Arnalds (one half of Kiasmos)? One of my all time favourite BJSC discoveries but it was a bit before your time (I might have played it on plug while you've been online idk x)

BJSC 106 // SONOIO - Enough

SONOIO is (was? - last album was 2011)** a cool electronic/ industrial(ish) project by Alessandro Cortini, who was for a while a full member of Nine Inch Nails and still currently plays as a touring member I believe. I fell in love with "Not Worth Remembering" from his first (2010) album, was actually going to enter that one but Enough had a cool music video and is also a massive tune (plus I thought it'd have broader appeal). Trivia: Alessandro is Italian and SONOIO literally means "It's me" in Italian (Sono Io). Hope to see this go far, gutted to have missed all the plug sessions so I have no idea what the reaction was to this but looks like it was good enough to get us into the final, thanks guys! wub.gif

**EDIT: Just found out, he's releasing a new album literally next week (July 27th) so it seems I've entered this at the perfect time for any potential fans. laugh.gif

He also says it'll be his final SONOIO album but lots of people say that. Even if that is the case though, it'll be good to hear new material.

Posted by: Bré Jul 22 2018, 07:08 PM

This is sooo good once again, these Nine Inch Nails side projects are a good sound for you wub.gif

Mat Zo - The Enemy - (Feat. Sinéad Egan)

Interestingly enough this has grown on me since I entered it. I added it to my iTunes library (thx Apple Music) ages ago because I think I saw it on a YouTuber's favourite songs of the week/ month's list or whatever and I liked it on first listen, but I completely forgot about it until I was looking for entries this month. I tried scrolling down a little while through my recently added on iTunes to see if anything was suitable and this song was here. ohmy.gif

I adore the melding of funk, the weird distorted elements and really cool electronic production. Sinéad's vocals seem perfectly suited for this too. I thought this would be so BJSC, fairly Aelandor (Gramatik, Said The Sky, C2C all have a bit of this kind of sound) but also honestly really reflects my taste right now. I'm listening to lots more production heavy stuff but still leaning towards either grittier elements or crossover with genres like (in this instance) funk. I love hearing older styles sampled or used in electronic music, it makes it come alive for me. x

Posted by: Jacob~ Aug 29 2018, 04:43 PM

Bleh. Predicted to do really well, good reactions on both plug sessions. Unimaginably bad flop at 38th, especially considering the semi results of 7th (should've been around 14th going off that). Almost as bad as when Nu:Tone came 4th in the Semi and finished 37th. Apparently this happens a lot to me. At least it was a Q tho.

Going to have to revert to my usual BJSC persona: It's a great song and you're all wrong. xx

Feint - Outbreak - (Feat. MYLK)

We're back with ohmy.gif a DANCE track!!!!!11!! This starts off with acoustic guitar beautifully worked into the production and builds into a full on electronic banger with the guitar reoccurring in verses, intro and outro. Not much else to say really in terms of background because this is a very recent discovery for me other than I have huge respect for the level of work that went into the production for this, actually astonishing tbh. Vocals work really well for me too.

Found this because at the moment I'm playing a lot of Rocket League (maybe too much oops x) and the game menu has a few compilation albums that play in the game menu, the songs/ tracks were (irrc all) made for those game compilation albums, mostly with an electronic sort of feel good theme. Been absolutely obsessed with this for the past few days and it's holding up so cheer.gif .

Hope you all like it. x

The Midnight - Gloria

I've adored The Midnight for months (if not a year now?). Honestly I could've entered Los Angeles, Days Of Thunder, Crystalline, Lightyears, Sunset, Lost Boy, Kids (their new EP is amazing), and to be honest I WISH I COULD. All I can do is say if you like this PLEASE go listen to at least all those ones I listed (and become a lifelong fan x), the choice of spectacular songs for me was fairly endless. Gloria is that one that I've played on repeat during early mornings or late nights at work, while driving, at home playing guitar/ sax along with, I just CAN NOT get enough of this 80s sound with reverby sax and guitar (more guitar in this one). I hesitated on The Midnight so much because of their past BJSC success but that was ages ago and I feel like lots of people will be making a genuine new discovery and the more people I can get into my favourite band of 2018 the better. Plus I've seen much cheaper entries. x

I'm pretty sure I had heard this one before the contest but thank you very much for sending it so I was forced to pay more attention to it, what a song (to cap off a year of mostly fantastic entries from you)! Wish it had won so you got a win before Iz but ah well xx

Posted by: Jacob :O Feb 9 2019, 11:41 PM

^Thanks so much btw Bré, good to remember the recent successes haha.

Let's retrospectively do this:

The Soft Moon - Burn

Banging industrial track here, really is the kind of stuff I'm increasingly listening to more and more, I love the increasing intensity on this, the fuzzy distortion, the "heavy" synths. It has a really dark feel and I love the angry yet sort of reserved/ smooth vocal in this too. Fantastic track and I'm glad Bré (if no one else) really appreciated this too. x

---

Got to be honest I was a bit salty about my DNQ- well maybe salty is the wrong word, more like it made me really apathetic towards the contest. I really loved my track, thought it'd at least Q and the fact it could've been an AQ didn't help my bitterness. x

In fact I almost didn't vote, wasn't a huge fan of my semi overall (of course there were some bangers but still) and not been into BJSC as much as I used to be recently so I didn't even care about the potential of a month ban. Fortunately because the voting window was pretty long I just got in the mood for listening one evening and voted, found some great tracks so was probably worth it aha. Think I will enter next month but it's almost definitely going to be a IDGAF entry. Probably an obscenely long #longsongbloc or something.

Posted by: Bré Feb 20 2019, 12:49 AM

This was the second time that I would probably have given you 2 18s in a row only for the second one to DNQ, I know you were banking on this being an AQ and thinking it was a risky entry etc. but I'm really baffled as to how I was literally the only person who gave it high points, sounded like the sort of thing that would normally hit a certain niche and get a few medal positions? sad.gif Thanks for another great discovery anyway ~

It'd really be a shame to see Aelandor pulling out as your entries have really become ones I look forward to a lot every month so I hope you can get back into it.

Omg rip 2 18s *.* - still thanku. Yeah I actually thought it'd still probably Q anyway, knew it wouldn't be for everyone but definitely thought I'd pick up a few more points, was unpleasantly surprised to see it so low down on the spreadsheet. sad.gif

Ah I wouldn't worry I'm back in this month which gives me plenty of time to get back into the contest for the foreseeable future, plus I've entered every one since 84 now so it's be a shame to kill that record. Hopefully I'll be keeping the quality up too, glad you've been enjoying my entries so much! ohmy.gif

Honestly I'm really stuck, so any pointers are appreciated!

BT - Skylarking

Finally entered it (the full 10 minutes though because better xx) and still got 25th despite my voting deduction- I honestly was planning to vote on the weekend and only realised I'd forgotten 1am on the Monday morning rip. Still I think it might've been about 15th without it? So it could've been worse, still a midtable-ish position so not going to dwell on that too much- most important thing is lots of people liked it so thanks so much for all the votes! Like my voting this is #late but the production and progression in this track is truly incredible, it was used as an example by one of my lecturers on how to use automation with effects to provide change to an otherwise repeating phrase. There's so much packed into this song especially at around the 5 minute mark which keeps it building beautifully despite (or not even despite- using) a repeating melody making the 6 minute hit an incredible listening experience.

Hyped for next contest, got a song I'm absolutely in love with right now that I think y'all will be getting behind perhaps maybe. ohmy.gif

Savoir Adore - Savages

As quite often it seems I was so so torn between 2 songs by an artist (the other in this case being "When The Summer Ends"- hope I don't regret it I honestly wasn't sure which one people would like more, I adore both). Savages however is an amazing punchy indie/ rock/ pop song which really got me with its really cool synth line and the great start/ stop timing. Also the male/ female vocals together are lush, giving me OMAM vibes. I discovered Savoir Adore because they were support for The Midnight when I saw them live a few weeks ago and they were really good, Savages went OFF live so I hope you all enjoy too and this isn't just me on a mini hype train (it's held up well for me for the past few weeks soo that was enough for me to want to enter x).

Pagan Fury // A Toast To You

Purely heard this song through playing Crusader Kings II, an historical roleplaying game based around the medieval feudal system predominantly. It features counties, duchies, kingdoms and empires and your character can rise through those ranks, acquiring titles, armies and lands- the aim is to continue your dynasty no matter what and you "become" the next heir of your dynasty, usually a child but it could be a sibling, uncle, cousin or so on. The lyrics are somewhat based on that, as this song was made in collaboration with Paradox for the game. You can be a man or woman (I like subverting things and becoming a powerful Queen every now and again). There's a tonne of other things you can do in this game, but I'd be here for ages- anyway, I only really mention all this to give the song a bit of background. The theme is very much medieval celtic/ norse/ slav/ folky with some lovely rock thrown in, this is a very Séyetana type entry for me so expecting lots of points from them hoping it attracts similar appeal to them when they do this kind of thing. Great vocals, great feel to the song, hope you all enjoy! ohmy.gif

DESERT STAR // Carissa

One of my favourite discoveries for a while, I found this one Rocket League in the menu! Amazing game. Second time I've done this for BJSC, the previous one being "Outbreak" by Feint. They have often have Monstercat playlists going and there are some real gems in there. I love love love this track, the production is incredible, I particularly love the final breakdown and whatever the vocal processing is on those vocals, I really like that style of 80s sounding vocal mixing. Anyway, absolute banger, only drawback is it's under 3 minutes! I usually have to listen to it 2 or 3 times in a row at least every time I put it on because it's that addictive. As for BJSC, this came 20th which is my highest position for a few months- really appreciated all the 18s and all the love! wub.gif

Just playing catch up here oops. ohmy.gif

Masego // Navajo

Okay so I'm going to be 100% honest, this was a placeholder in confirmations at first - mostly because I'd only given it a few listens myself since it was a super recent discovery but I just didn't find anything else I wanted to enter so I left it. THAT SAID I really enjoyed the vocal mixing on this (SO crystal clear) along with that R&B sort of chilled electronic feel, reminded me a teeny bit of Gramatik, Koop and to an extent the electro-swing scene - only so far as modern music using retro kind of bluesy or jazzy sounds in modern production but I really love that kind of thing! Anyway I enjoyed this which is why I put it up for entry but sadly DNQed but nowhere near last!

Next month I'm probably going to be entering something I considered way back in 2016 but never got around to, so #earlyAelandor comeback. Probably means it's doomed (see my first 6 entries DNQing rip) BUT I've got no streak to maintain and it's a proper pop rock banger so ALL THE LOVE please. xxx

Want to get back on top of these update posts, after an insanely busy uni 3rd year which as caused me to MISS BJSC 114 (uni finals were the only thing that was going to kill my streak rip) I got a bit lax.

Also #drama I LOST all the data in my OP (so, all my entry stats) when I was editing the flag image due to Tinypic's death. Somehow after I hit complete edit all the info just WENT and I was left with a blank post. I spent a couple hours trying to recover through the cache but eventually after that failed I just google searched with quotes of what I remembered being in the OP and just copied from google preview descriptions it displays below the link, using the text in there for more searches, revealing more text. I managed to get pretty much all of it back and filled in the blanks, then reformatted the colours etc. All good now and I've backed it up on notepad this time. x

Song: Desperado Vespa
Artist: LOOK MUM NO COMPUTER

With quite possibly my favourite artist name of this contest, Aelandor enter with this East Anglia electronic producer with the equally interestingly titled 'Desperado Vespa'! We seem to have quite a lot of electronic leaning tracks in this contest, but will LOOK MUM NO COMPUTER be able to jump above the rest of the pack?
Thanks Rob for making this easy x

Not sure about catching up on everything I missed (details will all still be in the opening post) but UPDATE POST ARE BACK. xx

I'm pretty sure he got the name because he mostly uses analogue synths, hence no computer. ohmy.gif

Live version here, found it first. Was very tempted to enter just because of how damn cool it is but there are obvs advantages to the studio version.
Going to use this as well.

Basically, my friend sent me this live video, absolutely adored the aesthetic and HOW THE HELL IS HE DOING ALL THIS LIVE???

I followed the link for the Apple Music/ Spotify studio version in the description and loved the studio version even more (for the sound x), which is why I entered that, though I seriously considered entering the live version just so everyone could see this. High recommend checking this out anyway.

It's that gritty analogue electronic sound, a bit NIN - very my thing. Hope you all enjoy. x

50th ANNIVERSARY ENTRY

I can hardly believe I've been in BJSC for this long but... we're here. I will be taking advantage of my 50th but it won't be bending the rules too much cause I don't like the idea of that, it's something that I think would be perhaps borderline normally. It will be a "recycled" artist however, one I think is significant to both myself personally and "Aelandor" as a BJSC nation. I will also try to keep using this thread now I've revived it. laugh.gif

An industrial German (admittedly English lyrics on this one) synthpop banger for you all. Have fun with the bouncy synths and 'camp' feel. laugh.gif

Dead Of Night (feat. Linnea Olsson) - Daniel Olsén & Jonathan Eng

Wolves rarrr!

Absolutely obsessed with the soundtrack to Sayonara Wild Hearts- which is a game all about the music. There's a pop album written for the game (which is essentially a rhythm game with a sweet lil story) and it has several bangers that go OFF. There were a couple others I considered entering but didn't because they were less than 2 minutes, or a medley I considered entering but without context might not have worked so well. Dead Of Night is such a tune and with the visuals alongside it is absolutely incredible. Would definitely recommend playing the game, approx 2 - 3 hours playtime I'd guess, very replayable. As soon as I finished playing I added this to my library and have been listening to it a fair bit, only discovered this on Friday! Perfect timing for this contest. wub.gif

See The Light - Weird Wolves

If my entry is wolf theme I post here apparently. I still have a national thread! I think taking a break was actually good for me (admittedly enforced, December was really full on for me and the deadline passed without me noticing oop).

I'm really hyped for this contest and had plenty of time to think about potentials, I found this while on a YouTube hunt through Out Of Line's channel (label) and found this absolute banger. Some edgy synthrock for you all this month. The verses really hit hard with super cool bass synths and chorus builds nicely back into them, and lead vocals gives me slight Fever Ray/ The Knife vibes. What more could you want? x

Vitamin Sea - Owl City

QUOTE(Jacob- @ Apr 30 2023, 02:31 PM) *
I'm really happy to have qualified this time, Owl City meant a lot to me growing up, but the last few albums, although I generally liked them, didn't have quite the same feel (the odd track aside). Coco Moon, while not perfect for me feels like the best offering from him since All Things Bright and Beautiful (2011), and Vitamin Sea completely recaptures the Ocean Eyes era for me with a more mature sound, and other parts of the album have some really interesting experimental things going on.

I wouldn't have usually entered an artist this well known, even if "well known" is just for a historical couple of hits but (to slightly loop back to the previous conversation) I felt really hard done by when I DNQed with my 50th with Lights so this felt like a surrogate anniversary to me. I didn't even expect to necessarily qualify because I had no idea how well that kind of sound would go down here, but it looks like it worked out this time.

I absolutely adored Owl City when I was younger, my taste has definitely evolved a lot since then but this kind of sound will always take me back, and Vitamin Sea is like an Ocean Eyes track but punchier, and with keytar solos. Really happy to have qualified and looking forward to seeing who the fans are. wub.gif
