Chart Commentary



In a crazily busy week, we see a total clear-out of the top 5, as Zedd's The Middle falls five places to #6. Leading the way with the new tracks is Marshmello & Anne-Marie's collaboration FRIENDS, the "official friendzone anthem" :') Anne-Marie is no stranger to the top spot, as FRIENDS is her third #1 in six months, and her fourth overall - the first dating back to Rockabye in 2016. It's Marshmello's third chart hit, second top 10 and first #1. His previous top 10 came with Selena Gomez collaboration Wolves, which made #9 upon its release last year.

Having to settle for a respectable #2, Ulrik Munther makes his return to the chart, just missing out on his seventh #1. Ulrik made his chart debut at the start of 2013 with a series of album tracks from his debut release charting as I discovered his music for the first time. Leading the way was Heroes In Defeat (Change Your Mind), a four-week #1 that went on to be one of the biggest songs in the history of my chart. Just a month later, Ulrik scored a second chart-topper with Tell the World I'm Here, his Melodifestivalen entry for 2013, and continued to dominate as new album Rooftop was released. He then scored a hat-trick of #1s in 2014-15 from his Swedish language third album, and back to English for 2017 #1 hit Coffee In Shanghai. Before is the second single from his upcoming project, and whilst it misses the top spot, it nevertheless adds to his impressive haul of hits, which now stands at 11 top 10 hits.

One-fifth of my favourite music act of all-time, Nadine Coyle has the longest-running #1 single in my chart's history to her name. Girls Aloud's Something New reigned for eight non-consecutive weeks in 2012, and she scored her first solo #1 with Go to Work last year too. Debuting at #21 last week after a Thursday release, new single Girls On Fire jumps an impressive 18 places to #3 this week, giving her a second top 10 as a solo artist and a sixth if we include Girls Aloud.

Polish popstar Margaret made her debut in my chart with Eurovision potential track Cool Me Down back in 2016. Many Eurovision fans were upset that the song wasn't chosen by Poland to represent them in the contest that year, but the song made #5 in my chart, and until now, remained her highest charting track. She's trying for Eurovision again now, hoping In My Cabana can represent Sweden this time round. The song debuts at #4, her best position to date, and the first song to chart from Melodifestivalen 2018.

Completing the new songs in this week's top 5 is James Bay, who makes his return three years after his debut album was released. James scored a #1 hit in 2015 with Hold Back the River, and five further top 10 hits from the album. Despite a lukewarm reception to new single Wild Love (to say the least... oop), the track grew on me massively and how becomes his joint second highest chart hit to date, matching the peak of Let It Go.

At the bottom of the top 10, making a belated appearance is Bebe Rexha's Meant to Be. Her breakthrough hit in the US, it's taken its time to impact here, but finally it gives Bebe her sixth top 10 hit. The song features American country duo Florida Georgia Line, who achieve their second hit and first top 10.

The final new entry in this week's jam-packed top 10 comes from Lasse Meling, a Danish singer who took part in Denmark's selection for Eurovision this year. FRIENDS is such a tune, soooo catchy and I'm so glad it's becoming such a huge hit!
Not loving the James Bay song rn, but it's nice to see he's still somewhat relevant enough to make top 40
Haven't heard the other two new entries to the top 5 tho
