Hi! Welcome to the Pavlandia, the country of countless brackets and Danish people speaking weird languages!
So this evening imma announce around 20 sets of results containing 1-15 points. That's right, NO 20's today, and they are to be announced tomorrow separately from the other marks.
And now for a couple of rules: *Do NOT reveal your entry if I haven't done it myself. *Do NOT reveal your votes nor who you gave your 20-pointer to.
Other than that feel free to speculate, predict who's going to do well and who is not!
Starting at 7pm.
PavLePav.

I'm seeing either an Air France or Karl X Johan victory. I'm seeing a bottom five finish for myself.

First set of votes. Nothing to be concrete about at this stage, but Walk The Moon gets their first 15.
Also, I've mixed 'Anna Sun' and 'Walk The Moon' up, it will be fixed after the 17th vote.

So it was Brett-Butler who sent Gone. And it was indeed good since even Shakilover gave points to it! Anyway, big points go to Capital Cities who rocket to the top and to Islands who received the first points of the night. It's not however that satisfying to start this high and end up bottom 5.

I know what you mean, I'd planned to send Young Blood by The Naked & Famous to one of the BJSC contests this time last year but withdrew my confirmation at the last minute after I'd seen that it had been entered into and won Unknown Pleasures. Would have been a bit of a hollow victory for me had it done well in BJSC knowing that half of the participants would have discovered it here first.

Oh the version I have only has 6! Last.fm tells me they have at least 16 so I better get downloading...
Posted by: Dandy* 16th July 2011, 10:46 PM
Islands and Air France are indeed both amazing tracks... I too stuck to my rule of not awarding points to tracks that I'm really familiar with. The Air France album was in my top 10 of 2008 while Rough Gem was one of my top 10 of 2006 so I just couldn't give them points in a contest where the standard was higher than usual.

at the complete lack of love for No Love... I really thought I was in with a shot at a top 10 finish here. But alas the bottom 10 is looking more likely, a shame as it's still my favourite out of the lot.
Still Cremey deserves a none the less for the 2nd place score.
I thought it would be doing much better! Perhaps it has been given lots of 20s...although maybe that's just wishful thinking.
'No Love' and 'Flames' are by far my favourite discoveries. Both wonderful.

Apologies, I've been out this evening and am probably more excitable than I should be! I didn't really mean my comment to come across as egotistical as it possibly did.
You're right, as long as some people find something they love then the contest has served it's purpose.
Posted by: Horatio 16th July 2011, 11:22 PM
I'm actually a bit surprised by the lack of love for my entry, thought it'd blow the competition away. Also the lack of love for No Love and Photograph strikes me, both were definitely among the better tracks in my opinion. Safe and sound sounded slightly generic to me on the other hand, but seems to be doing well (I did love the 0:33-0:40 part though).
Anyways I like the way the table is set up, though I'm not sure the "not revealing 20points" bit is as good as expected, makes the initial revealed points seem somewhat less important. (and as Thomsen says, prohibits us from expressing our love for favourite tracks.)

Yeah I know... I was just trying to get some conversation going in my semi drunken state. It's not about my song winning either, I just had high hopes for it - certainly not hopes of bottom 5!
I wasn't sure what else I could discuss, I don't want to give away where my 20 points went by discussing that track (even though I do think my 20 pointer will win in the end)... it's difficult to talk about anything other than your own track under these rules without potentially giving clues away to everyone else that could spoil Pavel's plans for the results.

Indeed. At this stage, if you discuss how great is a track, anyone can figure out if it's "the 20 points song" missing from your Top 12...

Aw, I liked "No Love" a lot - I can't give away how many points I gave it (because my votes have yet to be revealed) but it was more than 0, and less than 21. I'm a bit shocked at how the results are panning out so far to be honest, but I expect quite a dramatic turnaround once the 20s are given out - I think three are around 3-5 songs that aren't even Top 10 that I would expect or think are likely to be there when all's said and done.

Oh no, I'm not surprised at the results at all. They've been left in mid-air with still a lot to be revealed. The results as they stand I'd say are fairly typical of what the voting looks like after only a certain number of votes. As I posted above, I'm sure the final results will be quite different.

I discovered Austra about a month ago. My friend played me Lose It which I really liked. The vocals were very striking so I downloaded the album. Always on the look out for songs to submit to UP I set about getting to know it and after a few days The Choke started to emerge as my favourite. It's really Depeche Mode in places and it's exactly the kind of simple riff that I want to create when making retro electro pop stiff.

My favourite off the Austra album is Beat and the Pulse which I think is much better than Lose It. In fact that's probably the most annoying song on the album. Find the vocals started to grate after a while. Really like The Choke though and IIRC gave it points. My top 12 were such a lottery. I could have chosen them in quite literally any order.

Austra are an interesting band and remind me of The Knife a bit.. I do prefer Lose It to The Choke though.
My choice (Rubik) was pretty obvious as I wanted to enter something Finnish and a proper pop song. If you like Laws of Gravity, please listen to World Around You which perhaps lacks the twist of LoG but is a great song nevertheless.

If it does finish so low I will be quite disappointed. I think of my 6 entries it and 'I Heard Wonders' are significantly ahead of the rest in terms of how I'd rank them. I also thought it would stand out enough, hopefully it will get at least one 20 pointer!

It was the standout song when I listened to them the first time and continued to grow. It's possibly my second favourite UP discovery, oddly enough behind 'The Kiss' which was song Cremey entered the only other time he participated. You need to enter more often!
Thanks for the 20- and glad you liked it so much! No idea you liked 'The Kiss' so much too! I will try to enter more but I often can't find songs that I think will be good enough to compete with everyone else's. Discovered some great songs this time though so will definitely try to participate next time!

Oh that's fine! Although I only got a point, not points.
Nah, seriously, it finished 11th which is so close to top 10 that I can't be too disappointed and there were three people who loved it enough to include it in their top 2 - the aim is to send something that some people love so that does me just fine.
Posted by: ▲▲▲ 17th July 2011, 08:36 PM
None of the songs I liked finished inside the top ten. :/ 'No Love' is brilliant! The production towards the end especially.
Posted by: Dandy* 17th July 2011, 08:46 PM
Glad you loved 'No Love', I agree that the production is great and it's musically that I was really attracted to it also... the lyrics are kinda Human League-esque which appeals to me as I've got a soft spot for the 80s but I can see why they wouldn't appeal to others.
Posted by: Doctor Blind 17th July 2011, 09:04 PM
Wahoo! Excellent winner. As I said earlier in the thread "Flames" along with "Tamer Animals" and "No Love" were by clearly by far the best tracks there - but the standard elsewhere was still high and consistent which made ordering the rest of the tracks quite difficult.
I am very pleasantly surprised to have done as well as I did, especially after Grebo's comments in the thread earlier. I don't take any notice of BJSC whatsoever (save for anything that crosses over to the main forum) so it was an unfortunate coincidence that I ended up picking (out of my shortlist of 10!) the one track that had already been entered on BJSC.. but it turned out that it was a good choice anyway.
Thanks to Pavel for running UP6 - making the results really exciting, and here's to UP7 with ▲▲▲!!

It added a good twist - particularly as my favourite song came from nowhere to grab third place - but it did stifle discussion a little bit. Maybe it could be done the other way round with the top six scores revealed first followed by the bottom six scores.
Of course Ryan may have a new twist up his sleeve
Posted by: Dandy* 17th July 2011, 09:30 PM
Again, no offence Pavel, but this method did mean you could see the winner a mile off if you knew a few things about the posters involved. You can tell who is likely to vote for what by their 15-01 points compared to what similar people have voted for which meant that you could tell Ryan was likely to have received about 6 maximum scores.
Aside from that very minor thing, the edition was a great one though so well done Pav.
Obviously Ryan will now be spending the next couple of months ensuring that UPVII is the prettiest edition ever.

I didn't know Tirren entered Rebecca & Fiona in UP5 until after confirmation closed, so I kinda knew then that it wouldn't set the scoreboard alight given that it wasn't that successful in the previous contest. I should've checked before I assumed Rebecca & Fiona were 'unknown' to Buzzjack. My mistake, and I have lots of ideas for the next contest.

Overall UP League Table
If 30 points are given for a victory, 29 for 2nd place etc.
Position | Position after UP5 | Member | Total points | Number of contests | Average points per contest
I put this together over the weekend, to see who I've given my points to. I increased the points from the first two to make them consistent with the 12 song scoring we've had since.
If anyone else wants to compile one of these, I'm happy to upload the spreadsheet I have with the scoreboards of UP1-4 in to make it easier.

You keep forgetting grebo and Harve
Tyron actually finished 18th, and Cremey - 17th.

Oh dear!
I was going off my points spreadsheet, which must mean I'd made mistakes on there with Grebo and Harve as the only one I had on there was Daniel with two 7's. That was rushed and confusing when I did it before, I've since made it correct and more simple this morning.
Did they? So the leaderboard changed after the final 20 pointers were posted? Edit: No, I must have just rushed it!
Posted by: HUMOURless 18th July 2011, 12:07 PM
You know what I'd like to see - and I know it wouldn't be easy - but to see who likes whos entries over the six competitions. Someone, was it Mikey or Thomsen, said that I seem to like their entries.
edit - it would be a "where my points have gone" for the most regular participants.
Posted by: RabbitFurCoat 18th July 2011, 04:49 PM
I could certainly do it, but it may take a while....

Where my points have gone!
That chart is really interesting. You clearly really like or dislike my entries
I know this is lazy as well but I can't remember what I entered for the UP 2 or 3. I know one was Q-Lazzarus but could you remind me of the other? Thanks in advance
Posted by: ▲▲▲ 18th July 2011, 05:11 PM
It's interesting how Doctor Blind entered something he wouldn't necessarily vote for and still finished within the top five - I did the same during UP3 and it was pretty much universally hated.

Chapel Club I believe. Although I do think I rated that higher at the time than I do now. Q Lazzarus is still great though!

You couldn't do one where we see who game me votes over the last 6 rounds?
Posted by: RabbitFurCoat 18th July 2011, 09:06 PM
I haven't done the last one as Dandy never posted a scoreboard. Do you want me to send you the spreadsheet with 1-4 on it? I don't mind doing it but from what you've said you're better at spreadsheets and could probably find an easier way of doing it than me.

Thanks. That table's just fine.
By the way, if you're using a pivot table to do this then you're already using the best method.

Congrats to Triangles, Flames is a great song that just missed out on points for me. I must say that I'm disappointed Hoop Dreams only managed #20; just saw the video for it, and it's as wonderfully bat$h!t crazy as the song. Also, I couldn't help noticing that Larraine had a similar melody to Lykke Li's Jerome, loved the song nonetheless.
I'm glad that people seemed to enjoy Reprise, it's my personal favourite entry to date, I adore that piece of music. I am gradually inching my way up the scorebored, although I'm completely out of ideas of what to send to the next contest, normally I have a good idea of what to enter even at this stage.
Posted by: Pavel 20th July 2011, 01:53 PM
I must say that No Love grew on me a LOT. Good news is that even if i gave it more points it'd still not help the placing of the song!

This sentence makes me very glowy.
I really like the album too, am amazed that there hasn't been more hype around them as they are arty/commercial enough to be reasonably popular in a small indie band kinda way.

Young Blood was a top 75 hit. Hello is the second most successful after I Need a Dollar. I don't think anything other than those four have gone on to make the top 75.

I'm thinking probably the 2nd of October... Post the songs on the 9th and then the results on either the 23rd or 29th (depending on how quickly people vote or if they want an extra week with the songs to decide). I have a few hectic weeks towards the end of September, but I'm sure waiting until October isn't so bad.

I only say I doubt it would be the same because of *where* I discovered the artist, I don't think that their profile could be any lower so I'd be incredibly surprised if anybody else had heard of them!

When I first started looking, it seemed like EVERY act I wanted to send already had some form of minor BJ following so I was not impressed. Just praying that the one I've got lined up doesn't pop up in the next few weeks (although it's quite old so I'm thinking/hoping it's unlikely)
Posted by: Tom *.* Kay 10th September 2011, 12:32 PM
My current top act don't appear to have much a following here, although I have seen them in a couple of personal charts. I don't know why, they're really good. And not Eurovision related
