BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Friday Chart Predictions

Posted by: Mart!n 11th March 2017, 09:52 AM

There is no stopping Ed at the moment, his run at #1 will continue with 'Shape of You', unless 'Galway Girl' takes another step up to #1, furthermore his album tracks are not going to drop by that much due to streaming. Steps have released a brand new single titled 'Scared of the Dark' from their forthcoming new studio album 'Tears on the Dancefloor' also performing tonight on the Ant & Dec Saturday Night Takeaway Show on ITV1. Other brand new releases this week from Nicki Minaj collaborating with Drake & Lil Wayne on 'No Frauds' and her solo single 'Regret In Your Tears', Louisa Johnson with her follow up single to 'So Good' with 'Best Behaviour', Stargate feat. Sia & P!nk 'Waterfall', Just Us 'Cloudbusting' and a new track from Lorde 'Liability'. And Julia Michaels hoping to chart inside the top 40 with 'Issues'.

Ed Sheeran will continue to dominate the #1 album for some time, hardly any competition this week, Laura Marling will be the highest new charting album this week titled 'Semper Femina' vying for a top 5 entry. Other new album releases from Mallory Knox 'Wired', Circa Waves 'Diifferent Creatures', Bush with Gavin Rossdale 'Black And White Rainbows' and one half of Soft Cell best remembered for that #1 smash 'Tainted Love' of the 80s Marc Almond releases another greatest hits package titled 'Hits and Pieces – The Best of Marc Almond & Soft Cell'.

I hope Steps can enter inside the top 10 but with virtually no streaming top 40 might be more realistic!

They're at #141 on Spotify. At least they're not doing a Robbie and having 0 streaming. I'd say top 30 sounds realistic

Steps are #1 in the mids according to Minty

Posted by: Tinasha 11th March 2017, 10:36 AM

I actually think with tonight's promo they could make the top 15.

Remember that is without streaming data. They'll drop significantly by Monday.

Also, they're only so 'high' on streaming because of New Music Friday effect, I'd expect them to fall out of the top 200 tomorrow.

Posted by: gavindeejay 11th March 2017, 10:58 AM

I hope Steps do get a good chart position on Friday! Hopefully as the week progresses they'll do more promo and maybe airplay will pick up once radio notices they are doing well!

Posted by: PaulM1983 11th March 2017, 11:20 AM

Top 40 is realistically a good aim for Steps at the moment. The latest Kworb update showed a massive drop so they're not guaranteed to be sticking around for very long. If they perform it tonight it'll work wonders, and they may well get a top 20 out of this. Which I doubt anyone would have predicted a few weeks ago to be honest.

Posted by: ___∆___ 11th March 2017, 11:45 AM

I think there will be a huge boost for Steps after tonight's SNTA performance - especially as they have a new dance routine for 'Scared of the Dark'.

They also have a few TV interviews planned for next week which should stop it going into freefall.

We don't know if they're definitely performing the new track yet though. Apparently, acts are not really encouraged to promote new material on this show for some reason, and they were seemingly booked to do a sing-along section, which would suggest something like Tragedy.

Fingers crossed they get to do Scared of the Dark though.

Posted by: girl_from_oz 11th March 2017, 11:59 AM

How long will Ed Sheeran stay at number one in the album charts for, will he get knocked off by Depehde Mode in a couple of weeks or will Take That knock him off number one

Posted by: PaulM1983 11th March 2017, 12:01 PM

I'd say neither. I think he'll be quite comfortable for the next couple of months.

I'd be surprised if they didn't - Robbie Williams and Jennifer Hudson performed their new singles on the show. If Jennifer Hudson can get to promo new material then I'm sure Steps can - I'm sure the Steps team will be pushing for it after the initial success of the track.

J-Hud only performed Spotlight on Saturday Night Takeaway kink.gif

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 11th March 2017, 01:20 PM

Im happy to see the Steps comeback going well, for them to even get a top 40 hit would be great for them, streaming will hammer them which is the case with most acts who are around for years.

Its also looking good that the album should do ok for them. You could also see Steps greatest hits coming back into the top 100, hopefully!!

Im hoping Ed Sheeran has massive sales again this week to eliminate sales from the following week as i really want the new Take That album to get to number 1 but im not confident it will happen based on the performance of the Giants single and the decline in sales of their their Three album.

ISTM they have a large enough fanbase for the to beat what would be Ed's 4th week sales, especially as there won't be the same Xmas run-up factor that propped up sales of '25'.

Posted by: The Hit Parade 11th March 2017, 04:47 PM

Yeah, my guess at the moment is that Take That with their months of pre-orders will be able to sneak a week ahead of Ed, though obviously he'll overtake the week after.
However, I'm prepared to revise that prediction looking at Ed's sales in the intervening weeks.

Posted by: timjimlee 11th March 2017, 04:53 PM

Take That's previous Studio Album "III" started with Sales of 144,538 in Dec 2014, Would suspect this comeback will generate fewer opening Album Sales given it is not the run-in to xmas and there doesn't seem to be too much excitement around their return. It will be Ed's fourth week but his substantial streaming may make the difference.

Posted by: The Hit Parade 11th March 2017, 05:06 PM

It's not the run-up to Christmas but it is two days before Mother's Day, FWIW.

I wouldn't be surprised if Mother's Day boosts Ed more than Take That.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 12th March 2017, 12:28 AM

Promotion will be crucial for Take That on release week to be in with a shout of number 1.

Posted by: ___∆___ 12th March 2017, 12:58 AM

^^As much as it pains me to say I think Ed could hold off That That - admittedly they are an 'albums act' now but their last album sold 145,000 on the back of a #1 single - this era they have had a fan base led single with a chart run of 13-92 so the casual fan/general public probably doesn't even realise they are back.

I really hope they pull it out of the bag with promo as I can see this being am underperforming album by their standards and it's doubtful they will be able to produce another hit from the album so promo will be critical.

Posted by: Jason 13th March 2017, 12:31 AM

I really hope Julia Michaels is top 40 this Friday. wub.gif

I think Steps are looking at a top 25 entry, which is still quite a result for them in 2017.

Hope Bruno and Julia remain top 40 by Friday

Ah if Steps had performed the new track on Ant & Dec they'd probably be Top 10.

Posted by: PaulM1983 13th March 2017, 05:43 PM

Can see Steps ending around 35-40, given they've got absolutely no extra sales coming from streaming. Can't see them getting more than 15k for the week, which would have only just got them into the top 40 last week.

I'd say it is?

Disappointing that The Shins are only at 13

Posted by: gooddelta 13th March 2017, 05:53 PM

Steps are on lock for a certain top 40 which is enough for me (as much as it was incredible to see them at #1 on iTunes for a bit).

I mean, I never thought they'd ever have an official top 100 again after Light Up The World missed the top 75 five years ago when streaming wasn't even counted.

they changed the rule last year (post Frozen for sure)
all those cast soundtracks can chart in the main album chart now
and the occ seems quite flexible about it, does not have to be 100% by the cast
still counts if there are a couple tracks by other artists

Based on sales so far would Ed Sheeran be on track to end the week with sales of 300,000 with divide?

It would be wonderful if he can sell enough to pass 1 million this week.

Posted by: MrIndependent 13th March 2017, 08:51 PM

If he continues to sell 40,000 copies each day he'd be on roughly 318,000, which would be around a 53% drop. A very strong second week showing for album with a huge opening where its decline is not being softened by the fourth quarter period.

Ouch for Little Mix, that's quite a drop (down 24 from last Friday) for "No More Sad Songs", needs some Promotion from somewhere

Posted by: The Hit Parade 13th March 2017, 10:27 PM

They have updated the singles now, but not the albums.

Moderately amusing to see 'Shout Out To My Ex' next to 'Text From Your Ex'.

If not quite this week it'll be very early next week. How many days did it take 25 to reach a million?

Ed pushing two songs out of the top 10 since yesterday drama.gif

Posted by: Davidson 14th March 2017, 03:30 PM

Ed domination will always be under-represented in the early mids due to streaming being a day behind. I would not be surprised if Chainsmokers/Coldplay ended up being the only non-Ed song in the top 10 again.

Poor Steps, hope they can stay top 30 but I am thinking somewhere in the 31-40 region is more likely.

Posted by: cqmerqn 14th March 2017, 03:46 PM

Great to see Julia Michaels advancing on yesterday's position of 40!

Posted by: pippa 14th March 2017, 04:16 PM

Steps dropping 7 places cry.gif

With X by Ed Sheeran achieving sales of 10.6 at at this point of the week i believe it will be enough to push this album over 3 million total UK sales this week.

Posted by: Hadji 14th March 2017, 04:18 PM

Bruno and Julia might still be top 40 on Friday cheer.gif

Posted by: pippa 14th March 2017, 04:22 PM

Just seen the OCC have updated the top 100's as they had not done so yesterday.

Some interesting positions in the top 100 albums for me.

I am so happy to see Steps: The Ultimate Collection at number 55.
Take That: Ultimate Collection still top 75 at number 73.

In what is a little disappointing Charli XCX is number 78, i had hoped this would enter in the top 75 region of the chart.

14k. Judging by last week that should be just enough to scrape a top 40 place.

They were only yesterday's 52nd best seller, by the way, so expect them to end up a lot lower than #18 for the week.

Posted by: pippa 14th March 2017, 04:55 PM

At least its going to make the top 40 for Steps, which is still good for them.

Both + and x are being sold for £3 in Sainsbury's if you buy any chart CD so of course that includes Divide now too. Not sure if the offer's on anywhere else. Both were the Deluxe editions in ours too!

Posted by: mr_pmt 14th March 2017, 05:30 PM

Assuming Steps touches 18k for the week, that should be enough for top 30 I'd say?

Still, whatever number in the top 40 it reaches that is a pretty phenomenal achievement for Steps in 2017 after essentially a 15 year break.

Shops buy their stock from the supplier, and if they pay below a certain price for a CD, its sale when someone buys it in the shop will count to the budget chart as opposed to the main album chart. I hope that makes sense! laugh.gif

Disappointing but expected drop for Steps - the video was filmed today, really hope it's released soon and gives them a boost, would be great if they managed to get a few TV performances too. Good boost for their 'Ultimate Collection' too - it was last in the Top 75 in May 2012.

Last week's No.39, Little Mix, sold 14,213 according to the sales report, and last week's sales were inflated a lot by all the Ed tracks on their first week. Assuming the threshold for No.40 will be closer to 13,500 then Steps will no way miss the top 40...I'm assuming they've sold at least that already.

It is a special promotion with a free magazine in newsagent shops and selected Tesco stores. Maybe OCC has problems getting data from independent newsagent stores or perhaps the £9.99 price meant it was put in the Budget album chart initially. There would still be full price albums in HMV and downloads from iTunes etc. to complicate matters.
