22nd January 2017
It's a 4th week on top for A Different Corner, equalling it's first run in 1986 for a total of 8 weeks on top. It's still heartbreaking, and George has 3 in the top 5, 4 in the 10, 5 in the 20, 6 in the 40. His more upbeat tracks and bigger hits, for the most part, have dropped out of my chart leaving only his very classic ballads and great album tracks that fit in with my mood over his loss - all should have been been hit singles, and ooze pure class. That leaves Ed Sheeran and Grouplove to sneak into the top 10, and 21 new entries headed by John Mayer, yet to break big but he does well in my charts, the highest being his very Randy Newman-esque You're Gonna Live Forever In Me, with his jazzy Moving On And Getting Over at 26, both fresh out. There's a host of very different new tracks shooting straight into the top 40: shuffle alternative of Tamer at 23, Dua Lipa's 4th top 40 in a row with Be The One at 24, Crystal Fighters poppy Good Girls at 26, Pete Tong's cover of a former chart-topper for Fatboy Slim (in these charts) Right Here Right Now at 27, and Faith in at 29 - not the famous George Michael hit (which is lower) no this is an actual new Stevie Wonder track that is good! It's from a movie (Sing) and features Ariana Grande, giving him a first top 40 with new material in 12 years, and most likely his best new track in 30 years. Stevie now has a span of a bit under 49 years in my charts. The Dead South enter at 33, a Canadian alt-country band and there's a fab video to go with it, Beyonce enters lower down with yet another Lemonade track, but she must be coming up on 18 years of hits, while Data and Picard bring Star Trek into my charts again (not for the first time) as Pogo does a mash-up of Next Gen samples quite effectively, his second chart entry. The first Star Trek track to make my charts a disco cover of the original TV series theme tune by the Charles Randolph Orchestra in 1976. Finally, at 75, Arcade Fire return after a long gap - but not as long as their guest vocalist Mavis Staples, last doing it with the help of Prince in the early 90's when I saw her supporting the man at Wembley Arena. Mavis first charted here in 1972 with her sisters and dad, as The Staple Singers went top 3 with I'll Take You There. 1 1 1 4 A DIFFERENT CORNER George Michael 680000 2 2 1 11 WHEN YOU KNOW Robbie Williams 1650000 3 3 3 4 PRAYING FOR TIME George Michael 223000 4 7 4 6 WE STAY TOGETHER Kaiser Chiefs featuring Sarah Thomson 309000 5 11 5 3 SOUL FREE George Michael 108500 6 5 2 9 SECRETS The Weeknd featuring Tears For Fears 775000 7 4 4 9 MAKE ME (CRY) Noah Cyrus featuring Labrinth 406750 8 9 7 5 LEVITATE Imagine Dragons 192000 9 12 9 3 SHAPE OF YOU Ed Sheeran 103000 10 14 10 5 GOOD MORNING Grouplove 127800 11 8 4 14 CLOSER The Chainsmokers featuring Halsey 517350 12 6 3 12 ROCKABYE Clean Bandit featuring Sean Paul & Anne-Marie 493450 13 17 13 3 COWBOYS AND ANGELS George Michael 73750 14 10 3 9 I FEEL IT COMING The Weeknd featuring Daft Punk 417400 15 16 9 6 STAR CROSSED LOVERS Barry Gibb 143900 16 20 16 8 IT’S HAPPENING AGAIN Agnes Obel 136700 17 22 17 6 SHED A LIGHT Robin Schulz & David Guetta featuring Cheat Codes 93500 18 23 18 3 YOU’RE NOT THERE Lukas Graham 53000 19 28 19 3 HAND TO MOUTH George Michael 45100 20 NEW 20 1 YOU’RE GONNA LIVE FOREVER IN ME John Mayer 20000 21 13 13 7 WANTED MORE Betsy 125650 22 15 3 10 REDBONE Childish Gambino 447900 23 NEW 23 1 BEAUTIFUL CRIME Tamer 19250 24 NEW 24 1 BE THE ONE Dua Lipa 19000 25 NEW 25 1 GOOD GIRLS Crystal Fighters 18750 26 NEW 26 1 MOVING ON AND GETTING OVER John Mayer 18500 27 NEW 27 1 RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW Pete Tong, The Heritage Orchestra & Jules Buckley 18400 28 36 28 2 SWEET TREATS Right Said Fred 35700 29 NEW 29 1 FAITH Stevie Wonder featuring Ariana Grande 18200 30 24 1 19 HURTS Emeli Sande 1231000 31 19 8 8 NEVER GIVE UP Sia 288900 32 27 27 3 SILHOUETTE Tom Odell 54600 33 NEW 33 1 IN HELL I’LL BE IN GOOD COMPANY The Dead South 17700 34 34 34 4 RAIN Status Quo 64350 35 38 35 3 CALL ON ME (RYAN RIBACK REMIX) Starley 40300 36 26 2 19 GO! Good chart! Hi Jason & thanks! Sorry the reply's a bit late, busy week! I wonder if Zaynlor will pick up plays now... I meant Stevie had his biggest hit in my charts, the only charts that count (though also the UK charts, he got to 11 with Blue, I think) Dua just got her biggest hit to date, her album may well be a biggie - at least for these days! Grouplove came 3rd for James in Buzzjack, and well deserved, great record. cheers! john |
