Tom Ford is the perfect choice for single imo. On my first listen of the album it stood out as a hit. Not sure how it'd do in the charts though.

I'm not sure what to make of Tom Ford. Only heard it a couple of times and it doesn't grab my attention very much. I'm sure they'll play it to death though.

The beat is like Ayo Technology lol. Also, it's stayed in the top 100 in the US ever since album release week! 39-60-78-77-76-77-75-77-74-73-72 |

Good post this - it's remarkable how similar it is to the radio 1 playlist!! Yeah, it is. It wasn't like this a couple of years ago, but urban music has made a huge comeback to the charts this year. There's lots of mainstream hits now that appeal to 1Xtra's audience, whilst back in 2011 it was mainly just Rihanna, Nero, Wretch 32, etc. Almost the whole A-List this week has charted top 100 (or probably will do soon). It's not just with the BBC either. Capital FM and Choice FM have become a lot more similar to each other, but again, there's a lot more crossover recently. |

It is quite similar to Radio 1, especially in terms of popular tracks.
Stuff like Busta Rhymes, Giggs, P Money and even Timbaland these days tend to just appear on 1Xtra and climb up the playlist. Also many tracks tend to have more longevity on 1Xtra's playlist. I believe this is Week 12(!) for Breach, Week 11 for Storm Queen and Week 10 for All About She whereas these artists will probably only appear for a few weeks on Radio 1 at most. I think there's a good balance between popular but also specialist stuff on 1Xtra which is what makes it so appealing This post has been edited by lewistgreen: 6th December 2013, 04:13 PM |

I think with the likes of Breach, Storm Queen and All About She, they're on the playlist for so long because Radio 1Xtra plays them extremely early, and then they want to keep them on the playlists for a bit after their release.

That's what I was thinking they get exclusive first plays of a lot of rnb tracks - it's not the same in the indie version - 6 music though!

Yeah, even some big name global artists have their songs premiered on Radio 1Xtra (for example, Clique and Talk Dirty), which is impressive for what is quite a small station. |

Trevor Nelson played Tinie's new one yesterday and it does sound good on the radio but I would've preferred Mosh Pit or Don't Sell Out as the next single, though it'll probably be Someday if we get a fourth single.
Have to say I'm also quite pleased about DJ Fresh, Clean Bandit and Katy B (and Disclosure moving to the A List), it's been great to see urban music move to embracing some good dance this year and I hope it continues for quite some time This post has been edited by lewistgreen: 13th December 2013, 01:53 PM |

Have to say I'm also quite pleased about DJ Fresh, Clean Bandit and Katy B (and Disclosure moving to the A List), it's been great to see urban music move to embracing some good dance this year and I hope it continues for quite some time I'm pleased about that as well, but urban stations have always played certain dance genres that are popular in urbanized areas or are derived from other urban genres, so I guess it's expected. The obvious example is the UK garage from the late 90's, which was heavily supported by Kiss FM (which is still a big station, but it's a lot more commercial now), but also crunk, trap and grime in the mid-00s, then dubstep in the late 00's, now house. The most surprising thing was probably around 2008/2009 time, because urban stations like Radio 1Xtra and Choice FM were playing Calvin Harris songs (like Dance Wiv Me and Holiday), and also David Guetta would get played because he kept collabing with big R&B stars like Kelly Rowland, Akon, Kid Cudi, Fergie, etc. Then there were the dance-pop songs by R&B singers like Forever, Don't Stop the Music, The Way I Are, I Gotta Feeling, etc. which would get played. But that kind of music has been disappearing in the past couple of years (at least coming from "urban" artists). |

Just wanted to post this from Compare My Radio (http://bit.ly/KbFBnF) following on from a few posts about 1Xtra playing more and more Urban Dance.
Find it quite interesting that in the past month the top 3 tracks played are from Gorgon City, Sigma and Sub Focus! Not sure what the rest of the year has been like but I have to reiterate that I think it's brilliant they are not shying away from playing dance-like songs. I know many of you have said that this has been the case in the past but it just seems surprising to see it supposedly being preferred/played over the typical R&B/Hip-Hop! Not complaining or anything though |

If anybody is interested, found this article about Radio 1Xtra from 2004:
http://web.archive.org/web/20070225092921/...g_rev_1xtra.htm QUOTE Editorial review of BBC 1Xtra This section outlines our assessment of 1Xtra’s achievements in each of our main music genres: Dancehall Dancehall has become increasingly popular in the UK in the last year and 1Xtra broadcasts seven hours of specialist Dancehall programmes each week. 1Xtra has also contributed to the growth of Dancehall by taking the music of UK artists, such as Blak Out and Tubby T, beyond the specialist Dancehall shows and placing it at the heart of the daytime schedules, allowing a far wider audience to hear it. We have also helped to bring top international Dancehall artists such as Wayne Wonder and Elephant Man to a UK audience by featuring them extensively in daytime programming. Sean Paul from Jamaica, now a household name here, first performed live in the UK at 1Xtra’s launch celebrations. 1Xtra also brought UK audiences the Sting 2002 and 2003 events. This annual festival, the biggest date in the international Dancehall calendar, is held in Jamaica in front of an audience of over 20,000 people across three days and features the biggest names in Dancehall alongside the best in up-and-coming talent. It had never before been broadcast in Europe and 1Xtra was granted exclusive access to all the artists and their performances. “Events like Sting mean a hell of a lot to the Dancehall community. Sting is Jamaica's biggest live event, and plays a key role in helping to break new talent into the international market. It was great to hear the broadcast on 1Xtra. I was proud to see, that the BBC had recognised the importance of live events like this.” Maurice Hamilton, VP Records, Corner Productions Hip-Hop 1Xtra broadcasts seven hours of specialist Hip-Hop programming each week, including a two hour weekly show, Tales from the Legend, with DJ Excalibah, dedicated to searching out lesser heard “underground” Hip-Hop. In addition 1Xtra gives three hours a week to UK-only Hip-Hop and in a genre dominated by US artists 1Xtra have helped the rise of UK artists such as Ricochet, Est’elle and Dynamite MC. The highlight of 1Xtra’s Hip-Hop coverage since launch has been the Hip-Hop Weekender staged in summer 2003. This offered a display of talent from new artists alongside seasoned leaders of the genre highlighting the diversity and depth of this music in the UK. “A whole weekend of pure hip-hop beats – wow, who’d’ve thought that the BBC would be the one to pull that off? Big love to y’all and much respect for all the support." Est’elle, UK Rapper UK Garage 1Xtra has actively supported UK Garage during a difficult period for the genre, broadcasting nine hours a week of specialist programming. Record labels and venue owners have been turning away artists and their music because of the perceived association with violence and crime; 1Xtra has positively backed the artists by continuing to show faith in their music, featuring it heavily on daytime programming. In many instances it has only been the station’s involvement that has enabled these artists to continue to perform live. "It's fantastic to see a station coming out of the mighty BBC on such a cutting edge, it's doing the Garage world proud and most importantly the listener!" Paul 'Radical' Ruiz, Warners Club Rep RnB 1Xtra broadcasts seven hours of RnB specialist programming each week as well as featuring it extensively during daytime programming. 1Xtra has created an entirely new form of mixing in RnB - blending and scratching records in the “refix” style, as pioneered by 1Xtra’s G Child - which moved the genre on. 1Xtra’s RnB DJs have so impressed the scene that international superstar Nelly has asked for them to support him on his tour of the UK in March 2004 – an indication of the impact 1Xtra has already had on the black music scene. “G Child is the man, the true innovator – his show is unmissable to all serious fans of cutting-edge UKG.” GK, 24 yr old London listener Drum & Bass 1Xtra broadcasts seven hours of Drum & Bass specialist programming each week, presented by the new wave of UK Drum & Bass DJs, including DJ Bailey and DJ Flight – both brought to UK radio for the first time. 1Xtra is the only station in the UK to feature Drum & Bass regularly in daytime shows. In February 2003 the station’s Xtra Bass Week took the music out on the road for a consecutive six night tour around the UK, culminating in a weekend of wholly Drum & Bass programming. “A week of nothin’ but the toughest Drum & Bass – there is a god.” Listener from Leeds There's no mention of dubstep and grime, but they were still in their beginnings at that time, and really would've come under UK garage at the time (same with bassline, etc.), and I'm sure they would have played those genres at. Crunk and trap also aren't mentioned, but this was around the time when they were just becoming mainstream. This post has been edited by Eric_Blob: 28th December 2013, 07:56 PM |

Well certain genres like Garage and Drum & Bass overlap between dance and urban so its not surprising to see 1Xtra support them, as they always have. As for Kiss, let's not forget it started out as a dance station, so at the time it played house, trance and other dance genres heavily. |
