That will bring them the number 1 for sure. A well deserved one. Happy for Gaga also.

YAAAS, Symphony cheer.gif

Posted by: Zeebre12 20th April 2017, 11:49 PM

This is surely a desperate attempt to get the number 1. I bet they wouldn't have discounted if they weren't so close to number 1. The Cure has only been out 4 days, whats the idea. Would it not be better if it was discounted in a month or something like Symphony when its closer to peaking and higher on Spotify (unless this is going to be a long term situation?). I don't get what the need is already, you'd think it was falling out of the top 40 after a week or something its still number 3.

Why not capitalise on potential new sales so early into the songs chart life? I still don't think they expected this to be sticking around the top end of the charts like it has done and it was only made A- for Coachella and B- as a thanks for the fans etc.. It's a smart move if they plan on it actually doing something. This way it'll be top end of the charts and radio will have to take notice/it sets her up well for a new era.

And in regards to Clean Bandit being discounted, weren't 'Tears' and 'Rockabye' discounted fairly into their chart lives too?

Posted by: JosephStyles🐶 21st April 2017, 12:08 AM

I don't think Rockabye got discounted! I really don't blame them for discounting this though, if it leads to another #1 for them, why shouldn't they?

But radios don't really look at i-tunes anymore do they? The bad thing about discounting this early is if its only discounted for a week it will then drop off after a week.

Capital certainly look at iTunes! More than they really should considering how big a part Spotify plays in the chart these days.

Posted by: Jonjo 21st April 2017, 12:15 AM

Yeah Capital most certainly do and I am sure Radio 1 do for pop acts like Lady Gaga when it comes to their playlist! (Less so for bands like You Me At Six/Kings Of Leon etc.. though)

It's been a huge hit either, so it can hardly be called desperate. It's just another box to tick off. It deserved #1 in the first place.

Discounting a song isn't desperate :') It's simply capitalising on the fact there's a lot of hype around the song right now.

Like 70% of hits are discounted these days. While she waits for airplay to pick up, I think discounting this week is a good strategy to keep it afloat when there are so many big releases this week.

I agree, I bet they miss out by something silly like 700 copies, when sales are revealed tonight, I be well gutted.

Shawn Mendes might be in contention the week after, I must admit his track is a grower and so much better than Stitches. Also the foreign language track with Justin Bieber could be #1 contender in a few weeks time sad.gif I'm not really feeling it though. sad.gif

"Despacito" has been absolutely huge all over the non-English speaking world. It's a shame it needed Bieber to be a hit in English speaking countries but at least it has been mostly kept to Spanish. I've actually had it requested a fair number of times when DJing - before Bieber's version existed.

If 'Despacito' does make the top 40 then Daddy Yankee will have had a 12 year gap between his first and second UK hit singles, must be one of the largest gaps of that kind ever?

It would be different, Latin pop was big in the late 90s in the UK charts, would be good to see another hit from the genre (especially one that is all in Spanish).

I was thinking "did that not get to #30?", then realised it was that 'Bad and Boujee' thing. I don't know why I always lump them together.

I think 'Scared of the Dark' will be fairly quite remembered considering, but then again the environment I immerse myself in is largely homosexual.

'Unforgettable' is so dominated by its chorus, makes it sound more like a Rae Sremmurd song than a French Montana one!

I get what you mean, but I genuinely thought top 20 was a cert on iTunes by now. The hype of "a big male artist" had people believing of a top 5/top 10 peak on iTunes come Saturday, so even with a more realistic prediction of top 20, #33 (at about midday on Saturday) in this current sales climate is a bit of a surprise. I think it'll be a hit eventually, but I definitely expected him to do better on initial impact.

You were right, the current charts still confuse me, you perform in front of 5 million people during a time when sales are low and still don't get much of a lift and end up at No.8.

Maybe it was because the show finished at 10.15pm and people couldn't be bothered to buy at that time then forgot when they got up or the demographic of Mrs Brown don't use i-tunes but always seems rather odd that Mrs Brown's music guests never really benefited from the exposure of 5 million people on primetime Saturday night.

The song has dropped from 8 to 9 now and no further promotion that I can see apart from the repeat of Mrs Brown on Monday night.

I can't say regarding all of their performers, but in this case it could also be the case that people are getting the album instead. It is still #1 on iTunes. Even then, a lot of steps original fan base will be people that would buy the physical cd.

As far as downloads are concerned, I would say things are going just fine for Steps. They still have top 10 exposure and the 59p tag which will help more throughout the week.

It is brilliant for an act like Steps to be back in the top 10 of i-tunes with a song that was released 6 weeks ago I just find it strange that exposure to 5 million people did not generate much of a lift.

I was also watching This Morning when H was saying how different it all is now with i-tunes and spotify and I wonder if they realise that the single is a big success despite the No.37 tag of the OCC or will they feel it didn't perform as well as they had hoped.

It must be frustrating to be told you can't get streaming as you are not on many playlists and no one is buying much on i-tunes so your single won't chart from that either even though you have worked your arses off doing publicity, they looked quite tired on This Morning and I don't think Rylan jumping around probably helped in that respect though even though I think he is an idiot he gave them exposure by being an idiot.

Kworb just updated and as expected a drop

I think steps are more than likely overwelmed with how well the single has done.

I'd imagine they probably thought it wouldn't even make top 75 yet aloe hit no 1 on iTunes.

It's incredible that they are back in the top 10 on iTunes and are no 1 in the albums still.

That's not what I'm saying I'm saying a performance on a prime time show doesn't necessarily mean a song will fly up chart another example Gavin rossdales band , will.I.am , Jennifer Hudson , all performed new material but didn't impact iTunes

Top 40 debut for sure - not sure if it'll hit #1 in the long term tho. DJ Khaled's stuff doesn't tend to be awfully mainstream so I doubt it'll be that big but we shall see when we hear it!

DJ Khaled feat. Drake "only" managed #25 last year so I'd be surprised if that made it quite as high as #1, depends on how commercial it is I guess.

I presume calling a song "good crap" doesn't mean that it's very creative or meaningful, but that it's stupid and fun. I can think of a lot of songs I'd put in that category, even if I'm not sure I would consider 'Swalla' to be one.
That said, I suppose it's sort of clever how they sneak the innuendo in.

Is Scared of the Dark getting played by any radio station? Its a solid pop song that should be played on Radio 1/Capital. Its a pity radio are so against older acts (I'm not sure its really age that much because they play Sia but older acts that have been around a long time. I bet if Sia was around 20 years ago she would be not be played now Britney . If Katy Perry/Sia released Scared of the Dark it would be played loads by Radio 1/Capital and would be a huge hit. It was around 2012-2013 that Radio 1 wanted to strictly cater to the teenage market. Up until 2012, Madonna, Kylie, Robbie Williams, and Britney were regularly playlisted.

Sia WAS around nearly 20 years ago......well 17 years ago she was Top 10 with 'Taken for Granted'

Posted by: danG 24th April 2017, 10:09 PM

After that one hit though she kinda disappeared for over 10 years.

The real reason why 'Scared of the Dark' isn't being played by R1/Capital is because the song is too cheesy and Steps don't have a young fanbase. Sia's songs are very commercial, chart friendly and young people like them.

I think there's interest with the right song, remember I Don't Wanna Live Forever hit the top 5 only a couple of months ago, so I don't think his career is over by any means! His next album will be more interesting to follow chart-wise though as the first seemed to underperform (despite hitting #1).

Everything beyond 'Pillowtalk' has been a bit of a disaster for Zayn. Even IDWLF didn't do nearly as well as I anticipated, especially with Taylor featuring + the movie association. It's a shame, because his output is actually very strong for most the part -- 'Cruel' is one of the best tracks of 2016 imo!

I think there's interest with the right song, remember I Don't Wanna Live Forever hit the top 5 only a couple of months ago, so I don't think his career is over by any means! His next album will be more interesting to follow chart-wise though as the first seemed to underperform (despite hitting #1).

Agreed; judging by climbs on Spotify and iTunes, his song should hit a new peak this week

That sounds like an awesome mix of artists, I can't wait ot hear it. DJ Khaled has some great tunes.

Also, Swalla is an amazing song and deserves huge success!

We're going to have a huge clear out next week. From what I can remember we are expecting:

The Vamps ft. Martin Jensen - should go top 10 as All Night did
Katy Perry - an obvious top 10
Kygo and Ellie Goulding - could go top 5, but top 10 is a dead cert.

Also new one from OneRepublic. I'd expect that to go top 20

Wherever I Go missed the top 40 at first so unless it's massive sounding I can't see it doing that well straight away. Maybe 36 or something.

The Kygo/ Ellie one could be interesting; she's had a few misses recently; especially with her last single which was backed by a massive film and failed to go top 10. Kygo too can be hit and miss with his songs/ where they go - in fact only 2 have gone top 10 in the UK

I guess it depends if people are done with 'It Aint Me' yet

I'd have expected a decline on Saturday like most fanbase releases, but it's barely slowed down since it got released, not often you see that! The video's certainly helped but it had been climbing steadily anyway.

The only things missing were a special edition of the album which could have got extra sales and another HMV signing but #2 is amazing cheer.gif

So pleased SOTD is holding up on iTunes too - now they need to pay some £££ to get on the streaming playlists.

I get the feeling payola is a rather complex business and only open to those with enough perceived relevance.

For example, I can't really imagine Spotify giving Cliff Richard a place on Hot Hits UK even if his record label paid £1m for the opportunity laugh.gif Sadly I expect this extends to Steps...I know they were on The Pop List but they'll know how influential Hot Hits UK is and guess they won't want something they deem to be irrelevant on that playlist.

They really need a Hot Hits placing, they are a 'Hot Hit,' the song is poppy and dancey and if they have included artists like Little Mix then SOTD isn't a million miles away.

It's sad that if you aren't fortunate enough to get onto a big Spotify playlist, you're unlikely to dent the charts - even with extensive TV promo and a high spot on iTunes. Spotify has too much power.

Steps and Olly Murs needs to get together to highlight the ridiculousness of the charts on acts that don't attract Spotify plays because it needs changing in some way to allow all acts to benefit.

Yeah, it is kind of annoying how it all comes down to playlists, rather than what people like.

But surely fans of Steps could just stream the album or the songs they like? Don't most people do that or do they just listen to playlists that have already been made?

As explained they are not on any playlists and most plays on spotify are people using playlists and being forced to listen to songs they don't like as you cannot fast forward a playlist if you don't subscribe to Spotify.

Which is why Brenda Lee, Andy Williams etc get into Spotify at Christmas but would never any other time of the year.

Yeah but it is weird how TV promo increases the iTunes position but doesn't get paid subscribers to stream it more. For me personally when I find a song I like I add it to my personal playlists.

I think most of us around 40 are not spotify users we are still the CD generation and most Steps fans are traditional CD users and if we did use spotify it wouldn't be a subscription.

I think if most people around 40 used spotify they might find it quite an experience finding all the old songs they loved at the touch of a button but it's getting them onto it.

As I said earlier I use youtube rather than Spotify and that doesn't help Steps if others are like me.

What confuses me is why people will buy a song at 59p but not 99p are music buyers really that tight?

I know full well about this playlists and their impact, but I find it odd that there's 0 correlation with songs sometimes. Like Robbie's single which held up really well on iTunes for over a month but did nothing on Spotify. The way people rush to listen to a song on iTunes when they see it on TV, I'm surprised there's not a few more people who add a song to a Spotify playlist, like I would.

The charts have always been bias to be fair when I actively listened every week from 1989 to 2006 it was always a young person's thing but I am surprised that Spotify doesn't attract mid age people as most songs are on it from 80 and 90s.

Since Spotify though it seems that this has been purely aimed at teens and because they are the main contributor to the chart it has left the pre digit generation behind.

Spotify should join up with a new prime time music TV show, have a diverse range of acts on each week and the performed songs get a playlist of their own. I doubt that would happen though.

I feel exactly the same. I just don't really understand why songs that perform so strongly on iTunes, and bounce back with only the slightest of promotion, still get absolutely no support on streaming. It's bizarre to me. The whole appeal of streaming for me is instantly adding new songs to my playlists, but I could then be on there for ages going from one artist to another, finding old songs I'd forgotten about or discovering new ones.

Obviously it doesn't help when Spotify doesn't feature artists like Steps on their main playlists, which is where the bulk of streams come from, but I still struggle to see why they're really not picking up any casual streamers from all this promo.

Yes I think it's weird how TV promo doesn't translate into Spotify streams. Will this make TV performances on BGT/X Factor less appealing for artists in the future as they don't really help.

Don't think it will as TV performances, epsecially during Q4, are a great way to shift albums as well as boost the song they perform.

It kind of makes sense to me - I can imagine hearing a song and going straight online to download it, but not so much listening to it straight away. And whilst I'm sure people do add songs to their playlists or libraries, that's going to take longer to show up in the feed.

TV promo DOES have an impact on Spotify!

Take The Brits this year, so many nominated singles returned to the top 200 and The 1975 went top 50 after their performance. I don't think they were even top 200 night before.

Some sort of error there indeed, wondering if they are trying to prepare an instant grat and it's gone a bit wrong.

re.gif 565. Lucie Jones - Never Give up on You

Has Radio 2 playlisted this yet? Maybe on Friday to coincide with the Graham Norton show.

Kind of annoying that 2-3 years ago if Steps had performed this well on iTunes it'd be seen as a pretty solid hit in official terms (but I still consider this and the era overall a triumph anyway).

There's no telling whether they would have done so well on iTunes back then though, as sales are a lot lower now it is easier to crack the iTunes top ten.

>> Falling Apple <<
Down with downloads

How soon until we bid farewell
to iTunes? There's word doing
the rounds in tech circles that
Apple is looking to shake the
iconic brand loose as they try
to coax people into signing up
to their persistently stagnant
Apple Music brand instead.

This week they started the
rebrand of podcasts, with all
new podcast material dropping
the word "iTunes" in favour
of "Apple Podcasts".

Some think they're so hellbent
on pushing people on to their
subscription-based service
that the whole iTunes store
might be on the chopping block.
If so, be ready to say goodbye
to downloaded music.

I'm not surprised - they are lagging behind on their streaming service and download sales are falling rapidly. This is the same as killing off the CD single etc., but would expect nothing less from Apple to be honest as if they don't strike soon they will always be the bridesmaid to Spotify.

Although there are rumors that they are rebranding totally and dropping the 'i' and the new iPhone will simply be an Apple phone so maybe we won't see the end of downloads just yet.

Spotify is trying to do exclusive deals with big record companies so it can float on stock market so apple needs to get something done quick before they sign them all up.

69. Fall Out Boy - Young and Menace

love both wub.gif

I think iTunes must have made an error, because Fall Out Boy's new album, which has 10 tracks, is available for Pre-Order for £1.79. Surely this can't be right and it wouldn't be able to chart at that price?

Did you end up paying £1.79 or full price?

Posted by: danG 27th April 2017, 08:10 PM

I hope iTunes doesn't get shut down, or the charts will be ridiculously stagnant (just look at the http://www.officialcharts.com/charts/audio-streaming-chart/, Kendrick aside not much going on within the top 40).

I suppose people who still want to download could move to Amazon...

Posted by: steveh31 27th April 2017, 08:47 PM

Why don't Apple just merge both and you could choose to download or stream why have two sites?

Posted by: ankietarrr 27th April 2017, 09:05 PM

Apple is too expensive

1 pound per song is huge price for now

How anyone can expect Steps to pay for playlists ebntry when they made new album BECAUSE they were skint?

And this is what I read on this website in chart summary few weeks ago
