Chart Analysis

In a big week for new entries, MK gets his fourth #1 hit with 'Back & Forth', with Jonas Blue & Becky Hill.

The hype for a new MK song was very big, as it has now been over a year since his biggest hit yet '17' was released. That song peaked only at #3 but it has joined a very select few songs to spend over a year in the Hot 100, and currently spends its 54th week in the chart at #97. Avicii's 'Lonely Together' also spent 54 weeks in the chart, and the other two songs to have such longevity are Oliver Moldan's 'High & Low' (52 weeks spent) and the current leader, Jax Jones' 'You Don't Know Me' which spent 70 weeks in the chart.

Anyway, as expected 'Back & Forth' goes straight to #1 for MK, becoming his fourth #1. His last #1 was 'Piece Of Me', released in collaboration with Becky Hill. She also features on 'Back & Forth' which gives her a second #1, though similarly to MK her biggest hit was not a #1; 'Gecko (Overdrive)' with Oliver Heldens peaked at #3. Jonas Blue is also credited on the track and it gives him his first #1. His only other top ten hit is 'By Your Side' which reached #9.

Last week's #1 'All I Am' by Jess Glynne slips to #2 whilst Calvin Harris & Sam Smith drop to #3 with 'Promises'. Au/Ra & CamelPhat hold at #4 with 'Panic Room' whilst Weiss gets a new peak with 'Feel My Needs' at #5 off the back of the newly released vocal mix, amazingly this is 19 weeks into its chart run too.

It is a big week for new entries as we have five of them in this week's top ten alone. Diplo & Mark Ronson's collaborative project Silk City got off to a shaky start with lead single 'Only Can Get Better' peaking at #37 and their other two singles failing to chart at all, but expectedly Dua Lipa is here to save it all with 'Electricity' (also taken from Dua's forthcoming album re-release) going straight in at #6. It is the 23rd consecutive week for Dua in the top 10 as 'One Kiss' with Calvin Harris spent the last 22 weeks in the top 10, however that drops out to #13 this week.

On the week that Avicii would have turned 29 (well, it was last week, this chart is being posted a few days late as I was on holiday) it only makes sense to have some Avicii in the chart. This week I've (re)discovered his Madonna demos from a few years ago and two of them chart. 'Wash All Over Me' enters at #7 and 'Two Steps Behind Me' just behind at #8, adding to Avicii's large total of top ten hits as well as giving Madge her 2nd and 3rd top 10 hits (her only prior to these was 2012's 'Give Me All Your Luvin' which made it to #3, if the chart extended back to when she was last properly relevant she'd have quite a few more however). You may well see a few random Avicii songs enter my chart every now and then as I gradually search through his deep cuts.

Just a few weeks to go before we finally get Sigala's debut album, and whilst the last single 'We Don't Care' made no chart impact, he comes back strong as ever with 'Just Got Paid' which enters straight in at #9, following 'Feels Like Home' which went to #3. It becomes his sixth top ten hit in all. It gives Ella Eyre a third top ten hit (two of which are now Sigala collabs, the other is 'Waiting All Night'), Meghan Trainor a second ('Lips Are Movin' also made it to #9) and amazingly it is French Montana's first top ten hit (his biggest hit to date, 'Unforgettable' was a real sleeper hit here, peaking at #20, whilst his previous highest peak was #11 for 'Pop That').

Following three weeks at #3, 'Moonlight' falls down to #10 for Disclosure, though it would be #5 if not for the mass arrival of new entries, so the fall is not as bad as it seems. Disclosure's other top five hit 'Where Angels Fear To Tread' drops down to #14, whilst lengthy top 10 runs for 'Mowgli', 'Lucid Dreams' and 'One Kiss' (very lengthy in this case) come to an end.

Kanye West has been a big chart presence this decade though the hits have dried up recently. However, he gets his second top 40 hit of the year as viral near-comical song 'I Love It' enters at #19 to follow-up 'All Mine' which went to #33 following the release of his EP "album" 'ye'. It also becomes the first top 40 hits for Lil Pump ('Gucci Gang' only scraped the top 100 and none of his other songs charted) and Adele Givens.

Above & Beyond's 'Always' reached #6 following the release of parent album 'Common Ground'. Now that it is getting a push as a single (even if only in South Danaelanda) it is back in the chart, re-entering at #24 this week. Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike (with KSHMR) climb into the top 40 with 'Opa', up to #31, becoming their first top 40 hit in four years (when 'Waves' went to #10). KSHMR's last hit was 'House Of Cards' which hit #16 just about half a year ago.

Brockhampton rep hip-hop in the chart this week as they get their first hit with '1999 Wildfire', which enters at #32. Trance producer Denis Kenzo with singer Kate Miles get their first hit too with 'Guide', entering at #38. Outside the top 40 BUNT. re-enter the chart with 'On My Way' from the BJSC effect. The song previously peaked at #25 but it now enjoys its 27th week in the chart. There are quite a few more brand new entries too which I won't repeat here.
