I was thinking yesterday about how there are so many games being released all the time to their own level of notoriety, and as ideal as it would be to have played everything to keep on top of the conversation...it's really just not realistic. So I was wondering who else had any sort of 'white whale', a game series (or just individual game) that you've always wanted to play, but either because of time constraints, console availability, regional availability or just never getting around to it, you've just never experienced.

The series that inspired this thought for me was Metal Gear Solid, of which I've never played a single game and only scarcely seen footage for. In my mind for years I saw it as just a stealth/infiltration game, but over time I've just seen more and more praise and intrigue around Kojima's insane narrative weaving that I'm certain there's far more to it. I don't think most of the games are on any console I own though so I'll probably just end up watching someone else play them some day.

A more recent one I've never touched is Dark Souls, whose relevance might be overstated through communities I frequent, but a lot of people find it strange given the games I do play, that I've never even touched a single game in the series, or any of the growing number of Souls-like games. I do have Dark Souls III in my Steam library now so that could change if I ever decide to. My only trepidation around the series prior to this is that the setting isn't especially interesting to me, but I imagine the gameplay is right up my alley.

So how about you? What's an extremely noteworthy game or series that for whatever reason (that isn't 'I don't like it') you have never played?

Console exclusives are a big one, having never owned a non-Nintendo console with no current plans to change that. I've had The Last Of Us as my go-to for that example for quite a while although I actually suspect I wouldn't enjoy it as much as I think I would and lately Persona 5 has overtaken it as the console exclusive that I'd most likely like.

I'm with you totally on Dark Souls. The actual reason for this is that, though I know nothing about it, I want to start with the first one, but annoyingly, while 2 and 3 are often discounted, 1 never gets discounted as they're flogging the remastered version. So, as I'm not so into the idea of playing it that I want to invest in it at full price, I haven't attempted to play. I would be interested in giving it a go, but I'd need to dip my toe in first.

Witcher 3 is quite a big one, again partly due to me being against playing numbered games out of order for illogical reasons. I actually have it in my Steam Library, but wanting to play at least some of the first two (I've played a bit of 1 and didn't like the combat system, I'm going to give 2 a go) and that it is a huge install puts me off. From what I've heard, if I get fully into it, I might really enjoy it, but I'm just unsure because when I tried the first game I was also not really as enamoured by the world as I'd hoped I would be.

Similarly, Grand Theft Auto (IV). Big install, unsure if I'd like it enough to commit to the install, unsure of what I'd do there. And also Just Cause 3, even though I loved Just Cause 2 and want to 100% that one of these days, owned 3 for ages but never committed.

Even my strategy games aren't immune to this, Total War Attila and Dawn of War 2 have been gathering dust in the bought but unplayed section of my Steam Library for literal years and I really want to play them but also can't make the push to actually do so.

I may have a problem.

The classic Final Fantasy games, 10 and before. I've played and loved 15 and went through some of 12 but got distracted away from it, but I know they're both a bit different in terms of the formula. Idk they just feel a bit daunting to get into, I've got FFVII on my PS Classic now plus most of them are on the PS4 store and are coming to Switch soon so I really have no excuse laugh.gif Ik RPGs like that take time and commitment but I've been going through Persona 5 this month which gave me a taste for RPGs and it made me quite like a game taking up all your gaming time, you really live it and get into it.

My big problem with VII in particular is the graphics, I'm not a graphics snob but it's just aged quite horribly and I don't have the nostalgia with it to put up with it like a lot of other PS1 games. I feel like VIII and IX have aged better so might start with either one of those or X.

Yeah that's the other element of it. I was looking forward to the remaster version making DS1 an easy entry point but then it came out to...mixed reception. I'd heard people say DS3 was a fine entry point which is probably why I bought it but I do still worry that if I play it first and love it, there'll be all manner of quality of life improvements that make it difficult to go backwards.

Final Fantasy is a huge hole in my experiences except for me it's only FFX & FFX-II that I've played at all. A lot of them are easy to acquire on PC although I'm not sure about the port quality (and FFXV is probably an investment in storage space I'm not up for tongue.gif). I always feel really out of touch for not having played even FFVII, but I'm with you that it just looks...really distractingly ugly. I've been thinking that I'd get on board with the remaster (the FFX remaster looks & plays great so I'm optimistic) but that seems to be taking forever to happen. Now I see VIII & IX are pretty affordable and I'm tempted...maybe when I've gotten through more games I already own. laugh.gif

1. Souls / Bloodborne
Mostly because it's DIE, DIE and DIE again and again.

2. jRPG

JPRGs are something I need to get into more too! Persona as I said has really kicked me into gear wanting to play some more RPGs and they've always got such charm.

I heard it could be until 2023 which is just ridiculous laugh.gif I doubt it would take that long but you never know! It's going to be more action orientated apparently which will be more up my street.

Yes.

Bloodborne possibly will be very hard game for me.
JRPG - there are many different interesting games (FF, Persona, Kingdom Hearts, Dragon Quest, Tales of, Atelier series e.t.c) on PS4\PC and very hard to select the correct first game for possible love (or hate laugh.gif ) of all genre.
