Mel B lets cat out of the bag about June gig in Aussie TV interview...

15:03, Saturday, 28 January 2012

The Spice Girls are planning to reunite for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee this summer, Mel B appears to have let slip.

Speaking in an interview with an Australian TV station, the former Scary Spice was asked if the girls were going to be getting back together for the London Olympics.

She replied: "Ooh, I think the Queen's Jubilee concert is the event I'd be looking at more closely for that to happen."

But she quickly changed the subject, apparently realising that she wasn't supposed to let on yet.

And when she was off air she apparently told members of the crew: "I am going to be in such strife for saying that. It's all so totally bloody top-secret still."

Mel and her former bandmates Victoria Beckham, Mel C, Emma Bunton and Geri Halliwell are expected to perform at a special event at Buckingham Palace on June 4.

The girls had a successful comeback tour in 2007, but ended up cutting it short due to "family commitments".

This has already been denied by Mel C I believe.

Yes Mel C denied they were reforming on "Lorraine" last week. Mind you didn't she deny rumours of the last reunion until the last moment?! ohmy.gif biggrin.gif

Mel C reveals there will be NO Spice Girl reunion…

Rumours have been rife that the Spice Girls have been preparing to reunite for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee or the 2012 Olympics this summer, however, Mel C has sadly revealed that it’s not happening.

Speaking this morning on Lorraine, Sporty Spice said, “It's such an incredible opportunity and what a wonderful thing to be able to do. And the concert looks like it's going to be out of this world, but unfortunately – bad news for any Spice Girls fans – we don't plan to perform or reform. So I'm sorry to disappoint anybody.

“We often have things that we talk about. It was rumoured a lot about the Olympics and then of course the whole Diamond Jubilee thing came up. And it was something that we discussed, so it was in discussion, but unfortunately it's not going to happen."

She continued, "We have to respect each other's wishes. And we reformed in 2007 and we had an amazing time. The show was incredible and that kind of feels like our final farewell. And it would be such a great thing to perform for, but sadly not.”

Mel C also revealed that she loves Little Mix, and that she can see a resemblance between them and the Spice Girls, saying , “They are absolutely adorable and I love them and what I love about these girls is that they have got fantastic voices, they are really talented but they look like young girls.

“They’re not uber sexy, uber glam, I think they are really good, positive role models for young girls, which we don’t have that many of. So I’m really pleased on that front. And they remind me of the Spice Girls in that way, because they’re really fun and young and I think that’s what pop music should be about. It’s kind of got a bit too serious and a bit too sexy at times.

“My advice to them would be enjoy it, enjoy every minute because it doesn’t last forever and when you are in the middle of it you don’t think of the future.”

All five Spice Girls will be attending the press conference for the forthcoming musical 'Viva Forever'. It'll be taking place in the early afternoon (26th), and will apparently be held at the St Pancras hotel, where the Spice Girls filmed their debut music video 'Wannabe'.

Official website for the musical: http://www.vivaforeverthemusical.com

This week marks 5 years since the press conference for their reunion tour - can't believe it's been that long already! ohmy.gif The last time they were pictured together was in February 2008. Excited to see them together again. biggrin.gif

From Christian Vermaak(?)'s Instagram just now. To think I actually visited the old Grand Hotel at St. Pancra's only a few weeks ago when I was in London for the day and got all excited knowing it was THE 'Wannabe' staircase...I'm intrigued if Jennifer Saunders has written the script!

She's playing Mary Magdelene. (Try not to laugh at this next sentence) Chris Moyles is playing Herod (told you) and Tim Minchin is playing Judas Escariot...and Andrew Lloyd Webber is looking for the person to play Jesus on one of those 'I'd Do Anything For A Dream Like Maria' type shows in the coming months. I'd like to think the put down to prospective Jesuses would be 'HE'S NOT THE MESSIAH, HE'S A VERY NAUGHTY BOY!' *boom tish*

Various newspapers are reporting that a Spice Girls reunion at the closing ceremony of the Olympics is confirmed!

Victoria was interviewed in Ireland yesterday, and she said this about the girls:

QUOTE
“I’m so respectful of my past and I love the other girls. We have some fantastic fans.”

“Who knows, maybe some day we’ll do something else with the Spice Girls. I would love nothing more.”

“I don’t know about a comeback tour but I loved being back with the girls,” she continued. “There was a lot of fun, we did so much together and we’ll see. If they’re up for something then I certainly am.”

Posted by: jay727 Jul 20 2012, 03:45 PM

No they aren't performing at the closing ceremony. It will be headlined by Take That, George Michael and The Who

Posted by: -Jay- Jul 20 2012, 05:22 PM

That doesn't mean there won't be other performers though?

Posted by: Lukuzz Jul 20 2012, 05:39 PM

Yeah I can't see it happening, a bit too late now. I'm sure they will do something though. Maybe a one off concert near the release of the musical?

Posted by: zero Jul 23 2012, 04:16 PM

rolleyes.gif Its been all over the news that Poosh spice is performing with the rest of the "girls" ahem,at the Olympic Ceremony.

Posted by: AaronTM Aug 2 2012, 09:04 PM

So it looks like the Olympic performance is likely to happen after all!

Victoria tweeted this this morning:

Shortly after, Geri tweeted "What a lovely day.... I'm smiling.....eeeeee" and tonight Emma has tweeted that hurt cheeks hurt (from smiling?). Mel C is a bit quiet, but Mel B tweeted that she was in London last night.

Oh and Dean Piper is usually reliable and he confirmed it haha.

I'd like a Spice medley!!! No idea what they're singing....

So excited for this! I wish I had tickets, it'd be a dream to see them live, but it's never gonna happen. At least I'll be at home to watch it live.

Posted by: Jonjo Aug 3 2012, 12:16 AM

Ooh! Very, very glad that they'll be performing together again at something like this. They are definitely worthy of being there, whether you loved them or hated them, they are very much one of the most successful and iconic British acts! Really pumped for their performance now. Hopefully it'll be a medley!

It doesn't sound very good though...it's not something that would interest me anyway, as to the age I was in the late 90s (7 when Wannabe came out) the Spice Girls were to me the most irritating thing on the planet, and while there's a couple of their songs I appreciate a bit more now they're not a group who I immediately look to for childhood nostalgia.

Yeah, I can't see how there's remotely any real demand for a comeback from them? I think some of their more overzealous fans sometimes forget that no matter how intense their peak was, it only lasted for a grand total of about 18 months, and they have hardly any songs that have stood the test of time to any degree. Beatles or Abba, they weren't.

Posted by: d__ Mar 24 2014, 09:18 AM

I wouldn't say that.

I mean the musical was a flop for a number of reasons:

1) Lack of music, its simple. The spice girls have 10 hits. And a musical requires AT LEAST 20. People werent here for random album tracks they hadn't heard in 10+ years.

2) The writing was dreadful and the concept. The musical was a girls night out on a Saturday night (like when me and Eddie went). We got drunk and were plonked in a box. It was fun.

Ideally, had they ventured more into the movie and made it more in that vain, I think it would've lasted longer. The Spice Girls gave us these great characters and they didn't bother using them in a musical about them.

Posted by: -Jay- Jul 5 2014, 04:27 PM

Over on DenDen forums, a user called Mrspice has been sharing some snippets of previously unheard Spice Girls demos! They're from the 1999 third album recording sessions, but they were scrapped in favour of the girls going in an R&B direction, i.e. the 2000 released 'Forever'.

Tracks included in the above video are called 'A Day In Your Life', 'If It's Lovin' On Your Mind', 'Right Back At Ya' (original Pop version) and 'Proof'. I think I'm correct in thinking that all 4 of these tracks were recorded with Eliot Kennedy, the man behind their hit single 'Say You'll Be There'.

It's so interesting to hear these songs, 15 years on from when they were recorded! Fans didn't even know that these particular songs (bar Right Back At Ya) even existed, they were never registered titles. I think it's quite a shame that they didn't stick with the pop sound they were initially going for. 'Right Back At Ya' sounds so much better than the version that is on 'Forever'!

Mrspice has hinted that previously unreleased/demo tracks could be used "in conjunction with their next endeavour". I'll keep my fingers crossed for some anniversary editions of their studio albums!

~~~
Remember the thread "Spice Girls 2014" that was posted on Popjustice a few months ago, which lead to rumours of a reunion being on the cards? Obviously nothing came of that (and the poster of that topic requested that his topic was locked until there was further news on the matter). Anyway, a few days ago he wrote "It's not my fault the Spice 'thing' got pushed back", which still implies that something was going to happen. Curious!
It's a shame that it was scrapped, considering they performed it on tour! It's the track the fans have longed for for years. However, Mrspice on DenDen said that it never made it past the demo stage, so supposedly there is no finished version of it anyway.
Right Back At Ya sounds so much better!
Proof, Lovin and Right Back At Ya here are the best, One Day is dross.
I don't know what went so wrong with that album, honestly. WHy couldn't they get some good producers/ writers, as the then biggest band in the world, to help with it?
Posted by: pippa Jul 7 2014, 01:13 PM
They never really cashed in (the record company) on rarities, unused songs etc.
Posted by: Jay ジ Feb 11 2015, 07:18 PM
Some of their unreleased tracks from 1999 finally leaked yesterday! Clips of the songs had surfaced back in July 2014, but here they are in full:
All four songs were recorded in August 1999. 'Right Back At Ya' was remixed in 2000 to become an r'n'b style track for the 'Forever' album, but this is the original pop version.
There's still a few tracks from 1999 sessions which have yet to leak, Stannard/Rowe produced ones. If anyone is interested in the time line of the 'Forever' album recording, then look here: http://forums.denden.co.uk/viewtopic.php?p=4023700#p4023700
Interesting to hear what direction they were going for before they decided to focus on the american produced r'n'b tracks!
These sound great really loving Pain Proof and If It's Lovin' On Your Mind, they were better than the new tracks on the Greatest Hits album, maybe if they kept PP and released it as the lead single from Greatest Hits, then it would have done a hell of a lot better, I know it was recorded during the Forever sessions, but it was just a thought.
They had 14 songs recorded already by the end of the 1999 and I reckon they should have released Forever after the Brit Awards performance, instead of going back to Rodney and Fred Jerkins and recording "Tell Me Why", "Get Down With Me", "Time Goes By" and "Wasting My Time" coz they sound like filler tracks anyway and they even re-recorded Right Back At Ya into an R&B song (much better in it's pop form).
They could have at least finished Woman and here's what they had before going to Jerkins =
Stannard/Rowe 2nd August 1999
Woman
Treasure
Go, Go, Go
Overnight
Too Hot
Kennedy/Lever August 16th 1999
Right Back At Ya (Pop version)
A Day In Your Life
If It's Lovin' On Your Mind
Proof
Rodney/Fred Jerkins August 25th 1999 (1st session)
Holler
Let Love Lead The Way
Weekend Love
Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis September 21st 1999
Oxygen
If You Wanna Have Some Fun
If Ya Do
It would be interesting too see what the original tracks are like, I know some of them leaked but they should at least release these in some form.
I didn't even process that when I typed it. Their first few singles are what got me into music initially, albeit at quiet a young age. Still, it doesn't seem possible that I should be able to remember something that happened almost 20 years ago. I'm too young for this!!! sad.gif
Spice Girls to reunite in 2016 - without Victoria Beckham?
The Sun: https://twitter.com/danwootton/status/629396563991793664 | http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/bizarre/6577927/Viva-FOUR-Ever.html
QUOTE
Viva FOUR Ever Spice Girls reuniting for tour to mark 20th anniversary... but without Posh
THE Spice Girls are marking 20 years since first releasing Wannabe by reuniting — without Victoria Beckham.
Mel B, Mel C, Geri Halliwell and Emma Bunton will reform for a massive international tour next year.
The four members of the world’s best-selling girl group — with the nicknames Scary, Sporty, Ginger and Baby — made the decision at a secret meeting in London last month.
They will soon begin negotiations with tour promoters and choose their new management team.
Posh Spice Victoria — who joined the girls on top of black cabs for their last appearance at the London Olympics closing ceremony three years ago — insists she it too busy.
The group sold more than 85million records thanks to hits including 2 Become 1, Spice Up Your Life and Viva Forever.
Last night my Spice source revealed: “This will be one of the biggest pop reunions of all time.
“There is a huge demand for the Spice Girls to get back together, especially with the nostalgia around the two-decade anniversary of their first release next summer.
“Mel B flew into London last month to secretly agree the plan with the other three girls. They should each make more than ten million pounds from this.”
The door will be left open for Victoria to rejoin too, but I am told she is resolute. The insider explained: “Victoria wishes the girls the best of luck. She knows the reunion is on but has declined to be involved.
“She is far too busy running her fashion brand and looking after her family to get back on a stage.
“She also feels that they left the stage on an amazing high with their Olympics performance and worries a reunion could tarnish their legacy.”
Mel B has been the driving force behind the reunion but Victoria is believed to have cut all contact with her recently, causing a division in the band.
My source said: “There’s no love lost between Mel B and Victoria, who is still very close to the other girls.
“But Mel has been desperate to make this happen for a long time and she wasn’t going to let Victoria get in the way.
“For a long time they put off the idea of working any projects without her because they wanted to stay as a five-piece, but with the 20th anniversary coming up they realised it was a case of now or never.”
There is now a behind-the-scenes battle between top concert promoters to sign the band.
Their last tour in 2007, which did include Victoria, saw them make £107million in ticket sales and merchandise.
Top concert promoter John Giddings, who organises the Isle of Wight Festival, is desperate to secure the tour.
He said recently: “I love them. Everyone loves them.”
Leading showbiz agent Jonathan Shalit has also been tipped to be involved after signing Mel B and Emma as clients.
Mel B is now 40, Mel C 41, Emma, 39, and Geri, 43 — and the Spice source said: “It will be the four girls who are making the calls about this. There is a lot to work out in terms of their schedules and priorities, but they want to be in control.
“Talks between them are continuing and there are likely to be some official decisions made when they back from their summer holidays in September or October.”
At their peak the Spice Girls were a pop culture phenomenon, spreading their Girl Power catchphrase around the world and earning £50million a year.
Their iconic moments included Geri’s performance in her famous Union Jack dress at the 1997 Brit Awards, pinching Prince Charles on the bum and hanging out with the late Nelson Mandela who described them as “heroes”.
But in 2016 Five Become Four as Spice World returns.
Oh Vicky please do a one off at Wembley Stadium and film it for dvd release. A four piece Spice Girls isn't going to work look what happened in the Forever era.
Posted by: JosephStyles Aug 6 2015, 09:47 PM
I'm not shocked at all that Victoria's sitting out but a Spice reunion is good nonetheless!!
Posted by: Martyn Aug 6 2015, 09:50 PM
No one really cares for them as a 4-piece. I mean people may give V.B A LOT of flack but they need to be a five for this to work. The Spice Girls are a great part of the past, but that's just it I don't see how they fit in in 2015 (or 2016) I guess nostalgia will sell out a tour but a new single and album needs to be out of the question after the bomb of Headlines (Friendship Never Ends) unless they re-release that in 2016 with the further tag of (of f*** it we hate each other this is about the moneyeh).
Even if all 5 were involved how would this tour be different from their 2007 tour? They have nothing new to add to it, the only difference is this time I could afford to go. However will people be as willing to pay for 80% of The Spice Girls?
Posted by: JosephStyles Aug 6 2015, 09:58 PM
Yeah I'd imagine this is simply for a reunion tour to celebrate 20 years rather than with any new material! Headlines showed that the public aren't really here for new songs from them I think, which is fair enough, it's all about nostalgia.
I agree with you on the 5 or nothing thing but didn't people go and see 80% of Take That of their first reunion tour back in 2006 without new material.
I don't know where these rumours come from. Victoria loves the Spice Girls as much as the rest. Sure. She'd never do it full time but I highly doubt she'd let them do a twenty year thing and not be involved.
With or without Victoria, I don't think it'd matter. They'll still do ridiculously well with the tour. I still haven't seen them live and will definitely be ticking it off this time!
I really hope Victoria is back though! A 20 year celebration wouldn't be right without her tbf.
From someone on DenDen:
Emma just denied it on Heart FM about the girls to reunite the world tour without Victoria!
Edit:
Some of the girls are still teasing on twitter:
Emma Bunton @EmmaBunton
Melanie C @MelanieCmusic
Woke up this morning wondering whether I need to start practising my backflips???!!! 😳
Posted by: ThePensmith Aug 7 2015, 08:06 AM
My God Emma and Mel C love a good troll, don't they? biggrin.gif
TBH I'd be here for an anniversary thing with or without Victoria. Obviously it'd be nicer if it was all five doing something to mark the release of 'Wannabe', it's iconic and they were all part of its story.
But when you consider the continual public battering she took on the music front even with her solo career, can you really blame Victoria? Because I don't know many people who'd return to that kind of environment when they're more comfortable in other fields.
Take That have proved they can operate on member counts of 80% or 60%. The girls themselves have operated with 80% before. Hell, even McBusted only happened with James and Matt joining McFly.
My point is, they'll make it work, one way or another. If Simon Fuller is involved they'll find a way certainly.
Posted by: Jaÿ Aug 7 2015, 06:55 PM
The Spice Girls reunion rumours were trending high on Twitter in many countries, and also on Facebook! Lots of news articles published around the world too. Every time there is a Spice Girls reunion story, it really explodes. I love how much interest there is in them still!
Emma supposedly denied it, however she retweeted this Dan Wootton's tweet: "And a note from me to people saying Emma "denied" story this AM. She didn't. But no official announcement will come until later this year." - so that seems to be a sign that she hasn't actually denied it.
Mel B and Melanie C on the matter of a Spice Girls reunion:
I'm ready <3
I don't think Victoria has given any direct quotes about it all in recent times. I'd be astonished if she took part in a full-time capacity (such as a tour). I'm quite prepared for a reunion to be a 4 piece, although it would be a bit of a shame considering the point of it would be to celebrate 20 years since 'Wannabe'. We can only wait and see!
Posted by: Maurice Jan 14 2016, 10:49 AM
Yesterday Victoria's reps denied Victoria is going to join the other girls on the 2016 reunion and today Geri said the following words on BBC Radio 2 "When it's definite we'll announce it together, it will be the four of us"
No surprise i think, still i think it's sad it won't be 5 piece thing.
So who do you think/want totake over Victoria,s lines?
I want it like this:
SYBT-Mel C/Geri
2 Become 1- Geri does her verse from the album version.
WDYTYA- Mel B
SUYL- Emma
Too Much- Emma or Mel B
Stop- Mel B
Viva Forever- Geri
Goodbye- Geri
I don't know if they do Forever tracks but I put them here a anyway.
Holler-Geri
LLLTW-Geri
Headlines- Mel B
It's a massive shame for Vicky to not be doing it, but she is still *SO* successful. Touring takes up huge amounts of time and effort, she has no need for the money the way the others probably do.
Posted by: Virginia's Walls Jan 15 2016, 12:05 AM
Her fashion line is so big now,she is a one-woman empire. Yeah, easier to give Geri her LLLTW and Holler lines. Woulda been interesting to have deen which parts she woulda sang in a 5 piece Forever though ...
Can't inagine anyone else having her ikonek lines, especially in Too Much and also her Star Wars reference!!! Who else can sing, And I won't energise! So convincingly??
Aren't they all worth at least 30 million though?
Posted by: Maurice Jan 15 2016, 07:36 AM
They are all rich, Victoria richer than the others but they all don't have to complain about money.
Posted by: Joe. Jan 15 2016, 08:51 AM
I didn't think they're worth anywhere near that, other than Vicky? ohmy.gif Not that I thought they were poor, but I've heard Mel B make comments about how Spice Girls reunions would be good money in interviews (this was before her various talent shows of course). I think a tour sum would look very attractive to the four of them anyway. Not that they wouldn't be doing it for enjoyment as well!
Posted by: Virginia's Walls Jan 15 2016, 09:03 AM
Yup, their band was too small so some are quite poor!
Emma even has to work for HeartFM and wasn't Mel B broke at one point??
Posted by: Maurice Jan 15 2016, 10:01 AM
This is from a article from December 2015:
Emma $30 million
Melanie C: $33 million
Melanie B: $33 million
Geri: $40 million
There was a running gag in the Spice Girls fandom that Mel B was poor in 2003-2005, this was due that she lost a lot money on her ex husband. We never know if this was true but there is the fact Mel grabs every job she can get and works bloody hard. Why Emma works for the radio I don't know I just wishes she would record a new solo album again, her previous albums were amazing especially Free Me.
Posted by: Joe. Jan 15 2016, 10:02 AM
Wow I had no idea they were worth that much these days, what about Vicky then?
I do remember the jokes about Mel B now working in HMV kink.gif
Edit - I found an article from 2012 saying VB is 185 million ohmy.gif With Emma at the lowest on 15 million. I don't know what Heart FM are paying her to have doubled her worth since then?
Edit AGIAN - Maurince's figures were dollars, oops so she's actually only increased by 5 million.
It's ridiculous to think that Emma "has" to work for Heart. None of them needs to work ever again, especially since the 2007 tour and the high-profile gigs they have done since then.
Besides, having a public job is not the only way to make money. There are investments and businesses. If Keisha Buchanan (for the sake of mentioning a girlband member who is not regularly in the public eye) can live a comfortable life, any Spice Girl can do it as well.
Regarding a tour:
Mel B: "I can't really say much about that... there's going to be some announcement very, very soon... sooner than you actually all know. I'll let you know."
Regarding what their new music sounds like (interviewer asked whether it'd be a throwback to the 90s, or more 2016):
Mel B: "It's a complete mash-up mix, but it depends with what single we go [with] first. We haven't decided that yet."
Regarding Victoria & Melanie C not taking part:
Mel B: "You know what, Victoria, she's already booming with her fashion industry. Mel C wanted to take a break and focus on her own stuff, but we've always been very supportive of each other."
i want and don't want this in equal measure. gonna be a hot MESS but i will be front row to catch it fly.
Posted by: pippa Sep 8 2016, 01:05 PM
The Spice Girls without Mel C is big negative for me as she is the one i like and follow the most. I wish the 3 girls well but im not so sure how this will all go for them. That said, Take That are doing just fine and they are 2 members down. With Take That they were far more established than the Spice Girls (are now) and Take That reformed as four and were only 1 member down when Jason departed.
The Spice Girls without Mel C would be like Take That without Gary Barlow.
I just hope they are committed to making it a success - I don't want a half arsed comeback and dodgy single if they think they can make a quick £. I've been a Spice Boy since the start and have an obscene collection of all things Spice and while I'm excited by this I hope they are all committed to the project.
A new song recorded by the 3 piece Spice Girls (Geri, Emma, Mel B) - 'Song For Her' - has leaked!
Oh dear. Doesn't sound very polished so hope it's just an unfinished demo or something
Posted by: JosephStyles Nov 22 2016, 10:43 PM
It's quite nice! I expected waaaaay worse actually. Obviously it's no Spice Up Your Life but it's decent.
Ohhh dear.
People should tell flopstars and Amy Studt that ladders in tights do not make material for good pop songs!!
Eurovision come early.
Ohhh dear.
"Jump on a bus.. who knows where it's going"
These lyrics are laughable and let's not even start on the vocals, they're lucky Emma held her own after Mel C. Surely this isn't the song that Eliot Kennedy was raving about?
It's not even so bad it's good, they're ruining the Spice Girls legacy cry.gif
It's a bit of fun and very uplifting! It's only a demo and possibly not a song that was ultimately going to be used. I like it a lot for what it is anyway. #teamJakeWild #thisisasongforus x
I can't hear geri singing in the new song which part is her ???
Posted by: Buttered Muffin Nov 23 2016, 09:57 PM
The bits which sound like a worse Mel B. She is teyna copy Mel's vocals sooo it kinda sounds like a duo rather than what used to be a band of five :/
Without the other teo it just lacks that punchy Spice music.
Posted by: ___∆___ Nov 24 2016, 12:34 AM
I posted previously that I was worried the whole GEM project was going to be a disaster and I hate to say it but it looks like it is!
The YT channel that uploaded the track 'Song For Her' has been deleted and the girls have gone quiet which makes me think it may have been their comeback track which if so, the fact it has leaked will have totally screwed any plans for the official launch. The same channel also leaked Geri's new album in full.
With Geri pregnant, the song leaked and getting at best a sh!t reaction I kind of hope they just forget about the whole thing.
I have to say though I love the song and I find it funny that people are so caught up on the lyrics, they are cheesy and it's very 1997 but if they had of returned with a song like 'Shout Out To My Ex' they would just have looked like a couple of mums trying to reclaim their youth at a Karoke party on their way back from Asda.
Posted by: Jaÿ Nov 24 2016, 11:30 AM
I wouldn't say the general reaction has been that bad! Well, it has been here of course. Reading through Popjustice forum though, it's getting more of a mixed reaction there. Amongst actual Spice Girls fans (see: DenDen) it's been mixed to positive!
'Song For Her' doesn't seem like it's intended to be used any more. Emma Bunton said this a few months ago: "You know, us girls love creating stuff. We went and had a laugh in the studio. It's not a single, it's just we were creating."
The story goes, based on a mixture of insider information and fan theory, is that the song was supposedly intended to be a jingle for a planned reality show that the girls had in mind a while back. That show's concept being, to find replacements for Victoria & Melanie C. It's not properly known whether those replacements were intended to be permanent, or just a "come join us on stage for a one-off performance!" thing. 'Song For Her' lyrics is all about hard-working mums, so it does seem to fit the bill for the rumoured reality show.
Either way, it seems that the idea was firmly put to bed (assuming it was true). Geri said this last month at the Attitude awards: "There's been a lot of talk about replacing Spice Girls members and I wanna share with you there is no way we could ever replace Sporty or Posh. They're one of a kind."
The main reason the song has been deleted off YouTube will be because it's copyrighted material. Seeing as the girls have not launched properly yet, they wouldn't have been ready for a taster to be put out there by illicit means. Especially an unfinished demo track which is most likely scrapped.
Mel B revealed on Australian TV that she's back in the UK next week and will be meeting up with Emma & Geri. She said: “We’ve got a few music ideas, a few songs to record”. Earlier this month Emma & Geri were http://i.imgur.com/IhbNVVa.jpg, so it seems it's still full steam ahead for them, even though Geri's pregnant. For them to be recording more music, six months on from the session that 'Song For Her' came from, seems like a positive sign to me that they've got intentions to actually release music properly (single(s) and/or album, who knows) - fingers crossed! It wasn't all resting on 'Song For Her'.
I'll just be regarding 'Song For Her' as a fun taster, and look forward to when they put out finished music they want to be heard. Assuming they reach that point, these girls can be highly unpredictable! laugh.gif
For reasons unknown, some fans got their hands on 'Song For Her' months ago, and it caused a divide in the fan base because a lot of those fans were teasing & boasting about having it, all the while saying they wouldn't leak it (despite sharing it privately with whoever they wanted to). It was so frustrating. I was happy when it leaked because I was fed up of some of the fan base behaving horribly about it.
Posted by: ThePensmith Nov 24 2016, 07:19 PM
I was fully anticipating this to be awful. Can safely say I'm pleasantly surprised by this, strong chorus and whilst Emma sounds flawless, Geri and Mel B sound half decent too. If the album was full of songs like this I'd be here for GEM as a three piece. We are coming to the back end of a year where All Saints have had a critically acclaimed top 3 album and headline tour so this could easily work with the right promo channels!
Posted by: Jonjo Nov 24 2016, 08:16 PM
The lyrics. Omg. So inspirational cry.gif cry.gif
There is a banging chorus in there somewhere! The verses though... Emma is literally the one carrying this! laugh.gif
https://www.broadwayworld.com/article/Mel-C-Says-Spice-Girls-Have-Discussed-Return-Of-Musical-VIVA-FOREVER-20170906
Mel C AKA Sporty Spice has told Gay Times that the Spice Girls have discussed a return for their West End jukebox musical Viva Forever!.
"I loved it, too," she said in response to the anger the musical isn't still running. "What happened? What went wrong?
"It was such an exciting time. I started my career in musical theatre. I went to a performing arts college, and for me to work in the West End and then have the Spice Girls musical on the West End was such a thrill.
"It sadly closed after six months, but I think, at some point, yeah - at some point, I think. The music lends itself so well to musical theatre and I just think, at some point, we will.
"It's something we talk about. We'd really love to make that work and for people, not only in London to enjoy it but tour it and take it international. We'd love to do that!"
Viva Forever! was written by Jennifer Saunders and produced by Judy Craymer. It had a short run in the West End, playing from December 2012 to June 2013.
Would you like to see it spice up your life again?
OOH I saw a headline for this on my Facebook news feed earlier but didn't actually read the article! I would love for it to return to the West End as I never got to see it first time around sad.gif
Posted by: Jade Sep 7 2017, 05:03 PM
I never got to see it first time around so I'd be interested if it came around again. But I'd be very surprised if this actually happened after it was so critically panned and ceased happening so quickly.
Posted by: Megz Sep 8 2017, 09:25 PM
Yes it would be great if we can see Viva Forever again! Hope its come to Australian theatre to relive our childhood memories! But it need to be reworked. Judy Chaymer who created Mamma Mia said in the interview few years ago that she was pretty sure that Viva Forever would rise again at some point. smile.gif
I saw 'Viva Forever' and enjoyed it, as I think any real fan would.
I felt that it had scope for improvement in sets and costumes, but I think that would come with a profitable run. It just lacked a bit of colour and scale.
But I also thought some of the more lyrically interesting songs were wasted as part of "TV performances". Personally, I'd like to see the TV talent show element played down a bit. It could be more of a background, like in 'Hairspray'. Or it could be changed entirely for another situation that causes the protagonist to grow/move on.
The songs worked really well for emotive themes of coming-of-age, motherhood, romance and friendship.
Everyone should watch 'Goodbye'/'Mama' medley, and the male version of 'Viva Forever' at least once.
Spice Girls - Holler (yes I just went there. No I do not care. Everything about the 'Forever' era showed lack of direction and a bizarre desire to turn them into a halfway house between J.Lo and Destiny's Child. Which was never the point of them)
This post isn't to say you're wrong, because it's obviously your opinion, but I was just interested to give my stance on the matter. The Forever era is one of the most fascinating moments in the Spice Girls' history!
Personally I don't think Forever showed a lack of direction at all! The Spice Girls were actually very focused and determined to record an R&B album. Geri has said a couple of times in recent years that even when she was still in the group, the other girls had expressed a desire to make an R&B album - which she didn't believe would be very her.
"They wanted to make an R&B album. Am I a big R&B fan? Not really. I'm a pop writer. I felt comfortable in that genre and it felt completely alien to me to sing in that R&B style. My departure almost set them free a bit, and allowed them to make [Forever]."
I guess it's fair to say that the sound they explored on Forever was "(musically) never the point of them", but that's with the benefit of hindsight and taking into account that their pop music singles have since been embraced as iconic and defining of the 90s. At the time though, their music wasn't exactly lauded. They were only 3 years into their fame by the time it came to recording the third album, so with such a small discography they probably didn't feel that their previous sound had to be the be-all and end-all of their musical output. Also, it's worth noting that there are in fact R&B elements present on the 'Spice' album.
In 1999 there was certainly a shift towards commercial R&B becoming a major chart force. I would imagine that the girls & the label felt that R&B music would showcase progression and maturity, moving with the times... plus, combined with the fact they wanted to do it, ultimately it was a no-brainer. They were initially very excited about the Forever album, particularly because they felt they were given the opportunity to showcase their vocals more than ever before (which is certainly true, they really went to town with their vocals on most of the tracks... numerous intricate melodies & ad-libs). Maybe they probably would have been wiser to go in a StarGate direction rather than with the American producers, if they wanted some R&B-flavoured pop - but they very much enjoyed the fact they were actually in a position to be able to work with those American producers, it's ultimately what they wanted.
Personally I don't think their downturn of success is primarily because of the music (let's remember they had a #1 comeback single, and the album was still a #2, platinum success on the strength of that single alone) - but other circumstances surrounding that time. Such as, their general apathy by the time it came to release the album. They recorded most of the album in August/September 1999 (including Holler), but didn't release this music until October/November 2000. Melanie C experienced major solo success within that time, but also became increasingly depressed as well. By the time the Forever era began, she was truly over being a Spice Girl. Her behaviour was said to have taken its toll on the other girls, particularly at their Forever album launch party. Additionally, they'd probably left it a bit too long to release it. It had been 2 years since Goodbye, 3 years since Spiceworld. A decline in sales since Spiceworld was inevitable, so in that sense they were always setting themselves up for a fall - and the media loved to be able to write about their apparent failures. Them getting to #2 was a flop in the eyes of the media. It was like they weren't allowed to under-perform at all, and I think the girls bowed to that pressure, ultimately.
As for Holler itself... I actually love the song. I think it holds up well to this day as one of the best pop-flavoured R&B songs from that time. The fact it's American R&B produced obviously means it sticks out somewhat against their other singles, but whatever, in its own right it's a catchy song. Its lyrics are bold & self-assured, and therefore as Spicy as previous offerings. It also added a much needed uptempo to their run of singles (they have 7 ballads vs 6 uptempos).
Also, its existence lead to one of their very best performances, at The Return of the Spice Girls tour - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVrR4ySTnpI *_*
Some interesting and valid reflections there! I've always thought, especially in light of the leaked pop version of "Right Back At Ya" and looking back at W.O.M.A.N, that the girls would have seen much more successful with a 3rd album that still had a lot of pop influence. With Forever, you can really tell Geri is gone - and although she wasn't the Spice Girls by herself - she certainly brought out a camp and cheeky side which was a part of their iconography.
Having said that, they were only 3 years into their careers, and it is easy to forget just how influential RnB was at the time (Destiny's Child, All Saints, Eternal, Louise, TLC, The Honeyz). They would have seen their fans growing up too, possibly moving on from pure pop to something more adult. It makes complete sense that artistically and commercially they would have gone in an RnB direction.
We'll never know if a pop based 3rd album would have fared better, Geri's solo career which was more pop-based did arguably about as well overall (her album peaked lower but she had more hit singles and equaled two No 1s in the UK). Of course, it's easy to forget that forever did well, just not as well as Spice and Spiceworld (which were truly exceptional). In some ways they were victims of their own success - they had a very tall order to 'better', and clearly were just a bit exhausted/bored by it all come time to promote Forever.
It's a shame that Forever didn't take off as much as the others as I think it was very unfairly perceived as a bit of a 'flop' and that may very well have fed into a sense that the party was over (after Forever that was it until Headlines in 2007!)... Holler was actually a GREAT comeback single - it was also a perfect idea to double A-side it with a much more 'traditional spice girls ballad... I was so nervous when it came out but off it went right to No.1!
I'd say I always preferred the pop side of the Spice Girls, but Spice had a lot of RnB influence (I've always loved Naked)... and whilst I can't say I go running to Forever it's nice to have as something different, and Holler and Let Love Lead The Way are gems in my opinion.
In conlusion: I completely agree that waiting until November 2000 to release Forever, 3 years after Spiceworld, was a huge mistake. They lost some momentum and never really got it back (even if Return of the Spice Girls was epic). If Forever had launched in 1999, RnB or pop version, I suspect it'd have hit the top-spot and had more of an impact just because the interest in the group hadn't cooled off.
Final say: The cover. I will never ever understand the cover for Forever. Just the logo by itself would have been much better.
Posted by: liamk97 Sep 12 2017, 07:32 PM
My problem with 'Holler' is that I find it a much weaker version to what everyone else was doing at the time. Fair enough if the girls wanted to make an R&B record, but I wish it at least sounded true to them. Before their debut, various degrees of rock and hip-hop were dominating the charts. Then comes along 'Wannabe', this loud, in-your-face, pop song that just grabs your shoulders and shakes you silly. I've always considered it has a punk spirit about it because it's just so intense and went completely against what was mainstream. For them to then release what I consider a sub-par Destiny's Child single was a sign of regression, for me. Perhaps there's better songs on the album - I've not actually listened to any Spice Girls albums - but 'Holler' is the song that represents the album and I can see why it may have been responsible for their demise. There were so many other acts doing the same sort of sound but much better, so there was nothing to draw people to their music anymore.
That said, I do agree there were other factors involved such as the girls themselves not being fully invested by the time they got round to releasing. Was there any reasons why there was such a wait for them to release their third album?
Completely agree with you, cripesdude! wub.gif For me, the most offensive aspect of the Forever album era was its artwork... laugh.gif I can't believe they couldn't come up with something better than it. sad.gif
Liam, I'd say the main reason for the delay in releasing a third album, was them letting their solo careers get in the way!
They actually started to record third album material in 1998, but all those sessions were scrapped (bar Goodbye). The first half of 1999 saw them have a break from each other, with Mel B & Victoria giving birth earlier that year. Melanie C took the opportunity to record her debut solo album from March to August '99, but the other three girls also spent time in the studio in a solo capacity too. They regrouped in August/September 1999 to start recording together again:
2nd August 1999 - Abbey Road Studios - Stannard/Rowe
1 "Woman"
2 "Treasure"
3 "Go, Go, Go"
4 "Overnight"
5 "Too Hot"
^ All of these tracks remain unreleased and haven't leaked. Woman was performed during the Christmas in Spiceworld 1999 shows, but that was its only outing.
16th August 1999 - Steelworks Studios - Kennedy/Lever
5 "Right Back At Ya"
6 "A Day In Your Life"
7 "Give You What You Want" (Also known as "If It's Lovin' On Your Mind")
8 "Pain Proof"
^ Unreleased, but all leaked in 2015.
25th August 1999 - Whitfield Street Studios - Rodney/Fred Jerkins
9 "Holler"
10 "Let Love Lead The Way"
11 "Weekend Love"
21st September 1999 - Whitfield Street Studios - Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis
12 "Oxygen"
13 "If You Wanna Have Some Fun"
Melanie C properly threw herself into 'Northern Star' album promo after those sessions. They had enough material for an album release, but evidently the girls/the label decided that they weren't very keen on the pop songs from their usual collaborators... so they didn't have enough material.
The Spice Girls only came together for a couple of occasions over the next 6 months. They toured for a couple of weeks in December 1999 ('Christmas in Spiceworld' - where they performed Holler for the first time), and then performed at the Brit Awards in March 2000 (also performing Holler - but their performance of it wasn't televised). They didn't start working on the Forever album again until...
10th April 2000 - Miami - Rodney/Fred Jerkins
14 "Tell Me Why"
15 "Get Down With Me"
16 "Time Goes By"
3 months later, a final session occurred...
17th July 2000 - Whitfield Street Studios - Fred Jerkins
17 "Wasting My Time"
^ Jerkins also re-worked 'Right Back at Ya' with an R&B production and new vocals.
July 2000 is when the Spice Girls finally got to work on properly beginning the era - shooting the videos for Holler & Let Love Lead The Way! They received their radio/video premieres in September 2000, and finally released the single in October, and the album in November.
Interestingly Mel B insisted that the debut album she'd been working on at the same time - Hot - was released in October 2000, colliding with the comeback. Melanie C continued to promote her own album & even embarked on a solo tour throughout the Spice Girls' promotional schedule. Their solo endeavours lead to the US promo being carried out by Emma & Victoria alone, which didn't exactly show a united front & obviously they couldn't perform there. Their US floppage was pretty inevitable!
The lack of commitment wasn't all on Melanie C & Mel B though, they were probably all to blame. Emma worked on her own solo album from July 1999 to October 2000, to eventually release it in April 2001, while Victoria also dabbled with solo recording as early as 1999, through to 2001. Summer 2000 saw her release 'Out of Your Mind', with a very intense promotional schedule!
So really, it was all quite a mess - month long gaps between recording sessions, while they all seemed to prioritise their solo work over getting a move on with the group. The time between Spiceworld & Forever was evidently very busy for them all, but allowing 3 years to pass between group album releases was unwise. I think they really should have pushed to have got it out for Quarter 4 1999 instead.
(Sorry for the essay laugh.gif )
"Overnight" is from the "Spice" Album biff confirmed January 6 2013 Twitter, maybe there are two overnight songs or a reworked version.
I do kind of miss that thread, yet at the same time I feel a sense of relief that it's gone too. That thread, via the many fans who posted in it, really kept my hopes for a reunion alive on a near daily basis. Every article posted, every discussion that stemmed from them, provided a glimmer of hope... only for it to come to nothing. For the past month though, I've barely read anything about a reunion/people willing for it to happen... so I've actually started to feel far less bothered about the prospect of it!
Did you buy it?
Yah, I doubt there will be a reunion, and definitely not ith VB. The press has finally left her alone, but before they were always criticising her for singing, like schoolyard bullies. They need Mel C. It's a shame not one of them became a great songwriter like Gary Barlow, as that could have given them a reunion on another level, and actually given them a better 3rd album.
The campaign for Calvin Harris to remix a Spice Girls classic
Calvin Harris is under pressure to remix the Spice Girls classic 2 become 1 after he told another DJ he'd do it if same-sex marriage was legalised in Australia.
Now the law has been changed, people think Calvin should stick to his word. Even Baby Spice Emma Bunton's got involved.
Australian DJ Filip Odzak told Newsbeat: "He shook my hand on the deal. I have been waiting for this pot of gold at the end of this proverbial rainbow for five years!"
He's text Calvin to remind him.
https://twitter.com/FILIP_WithAnF/status/938722762150985728
The pair met during the Stereosonic festival in Sydney back in 2012.
Filip explains: "Calvin did a show and a crew of us came along and hung out in the backstage bar / green room.
"The conversation turned to the topic of wedding songs, I chimed in and said mine would be Spice Girls 2 become 1 and everyone had a giggle.
"Calvin was shocked when we told him that gay marriage wasn't a reality in Australia yet.
"I vividly remember his face, he was in genuine shock.
"I said to him when they finally legalise it you can remix 2 become 1 to celebrate.
"He 100% would have thought it was a laugh, and lets be honest, it's a one in a million conversation, but he shook my hand on the deal."
Filip wants the song remixed so he can play it at his wedding some day.
"It's a total gay bridal waltz anthem," he tells us.
Even Baby Spice is on board with the idea.
Emma Bunton told Newsbeat: "Let's spice up Calvin Harris! It would be fab for Calvin to remix 2 become 1.
"It's always been my favourite Spice Girls song and next week it will be 21 years since it was released as a single.
"I'm so happy to be celebrating same sex marriage equality in Australia, as a Spice Girl it's something I've been wishing for forever! Love always wins."
But the two words afterwards are unintelligible to me. It sounds like "nah nah" but this has never satisfied me as an answer because it's nonsensical.
Melanie C: "I was actually quite surprised at how little time we spent performing.
"There are so many interviews to do, TV shows and then a lot of performances you are miming.
"It's really frustrating as an artist. A lot of people in the music industry have worked their way up and we were successful at this point but we had never done a live show."
(Regarding their first live show in Istanbul) - "There was so much pressure on us, the production was absolutely huge and it was petrifying. That was probably one of the most terrifying nights of my life. Everybody was waiting for it and everyone was waiting for us to fail."
"I think people expected us not to be able to sing live. I think people expected not a lot of the show to be live. It was almost an out of body experience. Nothing can prepare you for that amount of adrenaline."
The reason they couldn't even sustain a 3rd album campaign, except for the bad album, was the fact that when their sales collapsed, they didn't have a lot to play with. Their saes were around 600k on average, so a collapse broght them to 1/3 of that, 200k.
Posted by: Spiceboy Mar 4 2018, 01:39 AM
Omg I just looked that top 5 makes me feel sick tbh. They are no way as influential as the people I stated. I mean the Queen, why? I love our monarchy but she is a figurehead nothing more. Same for Diana. Then the three politicians I'd maybe just maybe say Thatcher (even if I am a staunch anti-Tory and think she did more damage than good) but the other two... why what have they actually done?
I genuinely didn't think 'Holler' was that well liked/had fans in general tbh. I thought it was a widely known fact that it was tinny, demo-lite *Steps cheese* crap. ohmy.gif ohmy.gif ohmy.gif
I like LLLTW buuuut, it is definitely their weakest ballad single (unless 'Headlines' counts as a ballad?) and misses that something which makes the likes of '2 Become 1', 'Mama', 'Too Much' and 'Viva Forever' stand out.
*Of course it's not "steps cheese". I just want Michael to know how it feels to describe something as that when it is as far away from Steps you can imagine* 🙃
Posted by: Piers Mar 30 2018, 06:15 AM
I'll say this for Darkchild...I think his work for the girls was as solid as what he's done for anyone else.
Mel B claimed at the time she felt he handed off the better material to Britney...but I don't agree with that at all. I think his Forever work towers over what he did for Brit.
But Darkchild was never Timbaland/Teddy Riley/Jam n' Lewis in their prime. He was never really up to churning out an album's worth of solid material for anyone. He tended to be best used doing a song or two or three on an artists' album. So. To his credit with Forever...I think he gave the girls two obvious singles in Holler and Tell Me Why...and a third possible single with Weekend Love. Nobody asked me...but I never would've released Let Love Lead the Way as a single. I like the chorus...but find the verses meandering. It's still worthy of the album, though...just like everything else he gave them.
I feel he was genuinely proud of that album too. He continued to talk it up and predict Grammy wins...even after the album had gone down in flames on the charts.
Posted by: sammy01 Mar 30 2018, 08:38 AM
They obviously released LLLTW to cover all basis. Holler was and still is a bit divisive in the fanbase but LLLTW was safe and a good ballad. It is not as good as Goodbye and Viva Forever but Emma's vocals are heaven on it.
Interesting all round. It confirms my thoughts people are interested in Victoria but don't actually like her.
Also no wonder Mel C cant sell records or chart if she skews the oldest fans.
I know me too, would be interesting to see what the results would be if everyone involved was an actual fan. Bet there were alot of casual fans or not really even fans involved too.
LOL I had to share that this just sounds straight out of Spice World (along manta rays and lions that piss on each other)
And I love that it doesn't sound so unexpected coming from Geri <3
Nice to see the two of them performing together. They're a bit of an unlikely performing duo. So. Dig it. I realize this wasn't rehearsed...but I do wish Geri had sung a bit more. The only time I can clearly hear her singing is her one album version line.
Side note. Is this the only time "...boys and girls go good together" has been performed?...live OR mimed? I remember video surfacing on the reunion tour of Geri's vocals accidentally being used as backtrack as Victoria sang over it (...an incident that seems even odder now). But I don't *think* "boys and girls go good together" has ever been legitimately performed. A bit interesting Geri sang it all this time later. I would've expected them to just use the same lyrics that have been performed the past 20+ years...just with Geri going low with "take it or leave it" instead of the way Victoria sings it.
Another side note. I prefer the Victoria version's lyrics for its consideration for gay couples...but prefer the way Geri sings that section.
No, actually she sang it with the track here back in 1996.
Word has it she mimed to it in the video below too but they overdubbed the footage of them with that clip from the video during the second verses.
Her stage name is HALLIWELL and it was her stage name on her records
No one calls Pixie Lott whatever her name is or Lady GaGa Joanne. Her albums and singles will ALWAYS be listed as Lady GaGa as that's her stage name when released. Same as Geri Halliwell.
She has changed her name, clearly. What's wrong with that? Her name used to be Halliwell, now it is Horner. It's not that hard.
Posted by: Bilbo Ballbaggin Aug 3 2018, 04:00 PM
She is famous as Halliwell and her entire discography is Halliwell
Posted by: pippa Aug 3 2018, 04:04 PM
It is no different to Cheryl Cole changing her names when she married.
Posted by: Bilbo Ballbaggin Aug 3 2018, 04:26 PM
Did she release anythin as Fernandez Vercini?? No. She was still known as Cheryl Cole, even here in the polls, and she was WAY more famous than Geri when she had that name change too
Posted by: Spiceboy Aug 3 2018, 05:40 PM
Yeh but she was announced as that on shows so...
Posted by: Jay ☆ Aug 3 2018, 05:47 PM
As that has been her stage name and is what she is famous for
Geri Halliwell is famous for being Geri Halliwell and that is the name on ALLLL her singles. They are NOT credited to Geri Horner.
I've been on a mad Spice binge on my Spotify and YouTube for the last week and a bit ahead of me going to the Spice exhibition in London next weekend. Last night I watched 'An Audience With The Spice Girls' again and it bought back so many memories from when I used to watch our VHS taping of it as kids:
- The first performance of 'Stop'. I remember when this got aired, that was one aspect of the show every one in my primary school was talking about on the Monday, to the point where when it was played at our Christmas disco a few weeks later, myself and most of my friends had the routine down pat!
- Richard Madeley, Brian Conley, Dale Winton et al being dragged out the audience and made to be 'Spice Boys'. That was so funny!
- When Geri and Victoria talk to Saffron Le Bon (Simon's daughter of course). 'Simon, you're a lucky man!'
- The assortment of 90s names in the audience who you hear hide nor hair of nowadays - Sally Gunnell, Jayne Middlemiss, Mystic Meg etc.
- The Luther Vandross duet. I really loved their version of 'Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now'.
I also found the 'behind the scenes' film they did about the show for CITV with Lee Sharpe (again, another 90s name we hear hide nor hear of). Includes a young Carrie Hope Fletcher (Tom's sister and West End star) playing a young Emma Bunton!
Posted by: Spiceboy Aug 10 2018, 09:04 AM
An audience with the Spice Girls one of my favourite things they ever did! wub.gif
I also recorded it and played it on my vhs non-stop. I remember practicing the Stop routine in front of the TV again and again!
Oh yeh!
The change for Viva Forever's thumbnail is definitely a major improvement! I wish the Spice Up Your Life one was a shot of all of them, but at least it now shows a couple of the Spice Girls instead of a random extra lol. Wannabe's definitely didn't need changing, but oh well. :')
Victoria talking about how she felt during Return of the Spice Girls tour, in Vogue Australia:
‘I was with Elton John this weekend and I told him, “You’re the reason why I stopped the Spice Girls,”’ she explained. ‘I went to see him in Vegas in doing The Red Piano, where David LaChapelle curated the most incredible show with him, and I remember sitting there very near to the front and looking at him singing those songs he’d sung time after time, year after year, and his passion and his enjoyment was incredible, even after all that time. ‘And a few nights later, I was on stage at Madison Square Garden with the Spice Girls and I thought: “It’s almost like a waste that I’m given this opportunity. I appreciate the time I’ve had with the girls, but I don’t have what Elton can have after all these years.” ‘There was nothing there, other than that my kids were in the audience and I wanted them to see Mummy doing the Spice Girls.’
sad.gif I suppose if the passion wasn't there for her any more then that's that, but it's a shame she ended up feeling that way.
The Overtones have covered Goodbye on their latest album:
https://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/grab-your-kleenex-and-your-dancing-shoes-the-overtones-talk-new-album-and-paying-tribute-to-timmy-matley__24508/
You’ve also covered Aretha Franklin’s Say A Little Prayer and Spice Girls’ Goodbye – not the easiest of acts or songs to do justice to.
Lockie: “Goodbye was sort of the last song… it’s beautifully written and the chords are magnificent and I find myself listening to that one over and over and going, ‘oh it’s just such a nice difference hearing male vocals on it’.
QUOTE
https://www.entertainment-focus.com/music-section/music-interviews/interview-the-overtones-discuss-adapting-to-life-as-a-four-piece-following-the-loss-of-timmy-matley/
What shines through on this album, and actually all of your albums, is that you don’t do the obvious. You switch things up and come up with interesting arrangements such as covering the Spice Girls…
Mark: It was Lockie that suggested that maybe we tackle Goodbye by the Spice Girls and our initial response was that we weren’t sure we’d get away with that. Like with every song on the album we get around the piano and we sing it with our producer Julian, just with the keys to see how it sounds. Straight away, just lyrically, it say everything we want to say and we’re not shying away from the fact that we’ve lost someone so precious to us and that’s what that song is about.
A lovely/poignant version heart.gif
There is always so much rumous about how they all hate each other. That is the essence of the Spice Girls in a nutshell: support women, in whatever capacity they come.
Can anyone clarify this article for me?
The Spiceworld Tour grossed $60 million dollars just on the North American leg of the tour, excluding Europe and the Wembley Stadium shows.
Does anyone know why the Spice Girls weren't included in this article and how much this tour grossed in total?
Thank you.
Posted by: Piers Dec 17 2018, 03:51 AM
^ That's pretty interesting. That article was written during a more snobby time toward music acts targeted at young people...but...yeah...it would appear they just pretended the Spice tour never happened.
I actually don't think that'd be the only inaccuracy. Hanson and the Backstreet Boys were also on tour that year. BSB's tour in particular was pretty extensive. I have no idea how well those two tours did...but I have a hard time believing they didn't do extremely well in 1998. Guess the writer just decided to leave them all out?
