BuzzJack Music Forum _ Pop _ JLS - Eternal Love

Posted by: WhoOdyssey Sep 27 2020, 08:40 PM

Here we go!

As a buzzjack exclusive, I know someone who works with them and they have certainly recorded new music - so this is most likely it.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever Sep 27 2020, 09:02 PM

Do you think their comeback will be a success?

Posted by: WhoOdyssey Sep 27 2020, 09:05 PM

I reckon they can get at least a top 40 single, but the comeback has already been a success on how fast the tour sold out.

In regards to streaming, they still have quite a young fanbase. Loads of people my age (17-18) have been posting it on their insta stories and are at the perfect age for nostalgia for them laugh.gif

Posted by: Tefo Sep 27 2020, 09:26 PM

When they reunited 'Everybody in Love' and 'Beat Again' entered Spotify chart at #96 and #128 plus their greatest hits compilation re-entered the album chart for the first time since its original release in 2013. It charted for two weeks at #47 and #65. So there's definitely a demand.

Posted by: Bré Sep 27 2020, 09:28 PM

I think the JLS nostalgia is real but not sure that will actually translate to a new single from them making any significant waves. We'll see though I guess ~

Posted by: WhoOdyssey Sep 27 2020, 09:33 PM

The big question though... what's everyone's favourite JLS song? ohmy.gif

Think I'd go for One Shot right now

Posted by: Tefo Sep 27 2020, 09:43 PM

I think the real big question here is: will they release their comeback single on thursday like Kylie, McFly and Steps, and chart at #94 instead of #14 because of it kink.gif

Eyes Wide Shut, the buildup before the final chorus is a moment! 'Tonight I'll be sleeeeepiiiiiinnnn'

Hope this new single is dance music influenced especially after the last remotely JLS related songs were the Luvbug singles.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey Sep 27 2020, 10:09 PM

I have a feeling the sound of the new single will be like Jason Derulo - Take You Dancing

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever Sep 28 2020, 12:16 AM

Ya i think take you dancing sound would work for them.

Well, 'One Shot' and 'Eyes Wide Shut' were the only two I remotely rated. laugh.gif

Perhaps the latter though.

Posted by: UltraFolklore Sep 28 2020, 01:28 AM

I think if they come back with a good song + retain the hype from the announcement, this could be pretty big. I can see it doing similarly to how Sucker did

Beat Again is still my fave of theirs & I really love Billion Lights too <3

Posted by: WhoOdyssey Sep 28 2020, 08:04 AM

Ffs it's just an announcement they're releasing the hoodies 😭

But they do certainly have new music coming at some point

Posted by: Scene Sep 28 2020, 08:36 PM

One Shot is definitely one of their best but I have a soft spot for Take A Chance On Me. A real shame it failed to make #1 while worse songs by them managed it. I think it fell victim to Rihanna's We Found Love like other boyband hits did (was it Lightning and Gotta Be You? laugh.gif)

Posted by: JosephStyles Sep 28 2020, 08:38 PM

1 She Makes Me Wanna
2 Eyes Wide Shut
3 Beat Again
4 Everybody in Love
5 Do You Feel What I Feel?

Aston gave an update on the tour when he guested on the 'Greatest Music of All Time' podcast:

Basically they're none the wiser re: if it'll happen at the time it's meant to given their rescheduled dates start before June 21st and it's all just proposed dates of easing lockdown atm. I imagine (and hope) they'll reschedule it for next year because it'd be nigh on impossible to put on the tours they do in such a short space of time, nor am I confident it'll be safe enough for gigs of that size to go ahead so soon in the piece but I guess we'll know when we know!

Posted by: WhoOdyssey Mar 1 2021, 03:23 PM

Tours are (finally) looking much more likely next year, so hopefully there will be some new music by the end of this year!

Tour confirmed for reschedule to October and November this morning. They have also confirmed today that they have signed a new record deal with BMG:

It's so weird, I was thinking that'd be the ideal label for them just the other day! Especially with the success they've had with Steps, Kylie and McFly in recent months. Bring on the bops kings!

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Mar 9 2021, 12:57 PM

BMG will probably do really well with them actually!

If they can get McFly success in 2020 I think they could squeeze a pretty decent selling album out of this.

Posted by: Scene Mar 9 2021, 01:04 PM

Wow JB has really changed.

Posted by: ThePensmith Mar 9 2021, 01:46 PM

I agree BMG have had really good success bringing more 'heritage' acts as it were to present day achievements. Excited to hear what a new single could sound like too!

Posted by: Liam.k. Mar 10 2021, 04:18 PM

It's not actually JLS by the way! laugh.gif It's a drill song by Switch and J9 but somehow was credited under JLS' Spotify page and wasn't corrected by the OCC.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Mar 10 2021, 04:24 PM

It got monster high streams one day because people actually thought it was JLS though, so on that basis I'm interested to see how an actual JLS comeback will do.

(Watch BMG release it on Thursday when streams won't count and their one day of curiosity streams get wasted entirely)

Posted by: dannjohn Mar 10 2021, 05:12 PM

is there really a demand for new JLS music? Surprises me... of all the bands to make a comeback, their not one I saw anyone that bothered about?

Posted by: Scene Mar 10 2021, 06:50 PM

As much as I didn't rate most of their music they were a BIG deal between 2009 and 2011 - especially for the schoolgirls who collected all 4 variations of their albums, lunchboxes, condoms etc. laugh.gif I think they're fast approaching their "nostalgia phase" now that it has been 12 years since their rise to fame and nearly 10 years since they split.

It will be interesting to see how their new material compares though. Their original stuff sounds very dated these days and now they are in their 30s they need material with substance.

Posted by: Oliver Mar 10 2021, 07:12 PM

Not gonna lie, I low key still listen to "The Club is Alive" on a daily basis. #guiltypleasure unsure.gif

I’m excited to have new material for the tour though heart.gif

From The Sun today:

QUOTE
DOUBLE Brit winners JLS are back with the songwriting team who penned their No 1 smash Beat Again.

The reunited boyband are working with Wayne Hector and Steve Mac for their comeback album after signing a new record deal with BMG last month.

Aston Merrygold told us: “We went to the first JLS album heavy hitters – Wayne, Steve, Ale Tenant and Talay Riley. I’m all for the original JLS vibe as people loved it.

“It obviously needs to evolve because we’re grown men now but the standard is set.”

Very excited at "original JLS vibe"!

Posted by: troylovesmusic Apr 4 2021, 04:37 PM

If they can find a way to blend the old school JLS vibe with a current updated vibe then I could see them doing really well .

Posted by: Bré Apr 4 2021, 06:06 PM

Give us a drill song xx

Posted by: Tombo Apr 14 2021, 08:05 PM

All of Aston's recents singles have flopped. As a group they might have more interest but I can't see them having big hits again.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey Apr 15 2021, 05:14 PM

I reckon the comeback single to 100% go top 20/10 tbh

Posted by: ThePensmith Jun 30 2021, 10:44 AM

Ed Sheeran mentioned on Capital this week that he has co-written a song for their new album along with Steve Mac:

They were all in the studio together last week as well finishing off some new bits so probably won't be too long before we're hearing it based on this?

The Ed Sheeran news screams "we got a cast-off from Ed Sheeran and are going with it for a lead single because he's the "in" name at the moment". Very much doubt Ed wrote the song specifically for JLS.

I think this might do ok on streaming at the beginning going by that JLS track that wasn’t them but people though it was, did well. Also a lot of the old teenage fans will be in their twenties and more likely to use Spotify.

This song would have sounded dated even when JLS split up.

Ok this is great . Sounds quite throwback and classic them but I could actually see this doing well .

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Sep 3 2021, 01:40 PM

I didn't really like them last time, in fact I mostly tolerated them but after a couple of listens I strangely kind of like this.

It sounds a bit like Chris Brown's 'With You', which I also have a bit of a soft spot for.

Posted by: LMFan Sep 4 2021, 08:52 AM

Really enjoying this song for them. It is very them but it works for me in 2021. Sounds similar to Everybody in Love in places

Posted by: Billy. Sep 4 2021, 09:08 AM

It’s great, and I know it doesn’t mean much in 2021, but it’s weird to see them knock Little Mix down a spot on ITunes.

Posted by: ElectroBoy Sep 4 2021, 10:00 AM

Yeah I think this is good - it does sound like a throwback - but there's nothing wrong with that.

Hopefully it has some impact. I'm guessing they'll have more of a chance with the album given the state of the singles chart at the moment

Lovely first performance on The One Show last night up on the roof of Broadcasting House in London 😊

Interesting fact from their interview last night given Ed Sheeran has written this new single: he originally wrote "Lego House" for them - presumably for "Jukebox" which was their album at the time - but for some reason they never got to hear it. I can imagine them singing it actually!

Posted by: Billy. Sep 4 2021, 10:29 AM

Off course it wont go top 40 - its not really doing the streaming numbers - in fact i'd say it would be lucky to be top 100 - unless they get added to a load of playlists on Spotify, or its more heavily promoted. Its selling well on i-tunes though.

I'm sure they're more interested in the album doing well anyway - and I'm sure it will and that will go top 5 (maybe even challenge for the top spot). Barring a few exceptions (Little Mix), Pop Groups aren't exactly setting the singles charts alight. If streaming wasn't in the equation, then I'm sure this would be a lock for the top 20.

I think they’ll be bitterly disappointed - their big comeback single written by Ed Sheeran, prime time TV promo and having never missed the Top 20 previously (Appreciate times are different now etc.,) but am sure they were expecting more than barely making the Top 75.

Hold Me Down/Give Me Life missed the Top 100 - peaked at #112!

I would say Eternal Love isn't getting good enough exposure on streaming platforms to really make much of a dent in the official chart yet, but maybe that support will grow in the coming weeks. I suppose like other comeback artists they'll be more focused on achieving strong first week sales with the album. They're releasing via BMG, a label that doesn't seem to have much clout when it comes to streaming. JLS are fortunate they weren't lumbered with a Thursday release like many other BMG artists!

By the way, I enjoy Eternal Love! It suits them, it has a nice throwback feel to it.

Posted by: ThePensmith Sep 11 2021, 06:16 AM

They're no fools, and I think they're aware of how the charts work today and what to realistically expect. I wasn't expecting a massive first week because I'm aware that's not how things work nowadays.

It's not like 2011 where everything is so focused on a massive first week and going straight in at number one. Unless you are a certain band of artist (Ed Sheeran, Adele, Drake) that is true for virtually everyone these days. Most if not all songs in the charts now tend to not peak until some weeks - sometimes months - into their run.

You also factor in that it's been 8 years since their last new stuff it's going to be a gradual thing, and all being dads with families and commitments around those to balance now I imagine that probably suits them better anyway. And as Jay has said there is nothing to suggest support won't grow in the coming weeks with the video out there now, radio getting more on board and the build up to the tour starting next month.

But speaking of the video: really clever! It reminds me a bit of Red Hot Chili Peppers' video for "Dani California" with the different looks and eras. I love the Jackson 5 style one best, I bet they had a laugh doing that 😂

Posted by: Voodoo Sep 11 2021, 09:30 PM

'Eternal Love' is really, really good. It is catchy as f***! The video is cute, too.

I do wonder, though, why PCD instantly managed to go Top 40 with their comeback single, whereas JLS barely made the Top 75.

Now B-listed at Radio 2. The performance they filmed at the O2 a while ago was the acoustic video of the single which is now in the ether, as they say:

Posted by: dannjohn Oct 11 2021, 10:25 AM

the thing is, like mcfly and the vamps, these bands tried all sorts of tricks back in the day to get hits... 5 no.1s???! I could name you two? Am I surprised that JLS' comeback single has stalled at #71 ? No? Would I be surprised if I were JLS? No.

Posted by: ___∆___ Oct 11 2021, 11:13 AM

The comeback feels a bit flat tbh.

Prior to lockdown around their One Show performance there seemed to be a lot of hype.

No hit single (appreciate that’s almost a non-starter with streaming etc.,) and lots of backlash over the tour/M&G.

Hopefully the album does well for them but atm it just seems as if it will do ‘ok’ rather than be a decent seller.

Honestly, it's going to be frontloaded. I think it's a mistake to release it in the fourth quarter as a #13-OUT will look worse than let's say a #3-OUT, even if it manages to sell roughly the same.

Basically their promoter changed it last week so now it's a photo in front of them whilst they're stood on stage and submitting a question for a Q&A that may or may not get answered.

They've said it was out of their hands but considering what approaches McFly and Steps have taken with Meet and Greets on their tours which have either just ended or are about to start it's not the best.

Most people have either got a refund at point of sale under grounds of the date already moving twice (as I indeed did) or are just accepting less than what they paid for.

I must admit I am not feeling that confident of the album doing as well as I thought it would now. That we are still getting one is enough for me, anything else is a bonus as far as I'm concerned.

Just hope it does relatively well enough to justify another tour next year but I don't feel optimistic of even that happening at this stage.

Posted by: Hassaan Oct 12 2021, 11:46 AM

They've not exactly made a big push for it, so I can't say I'm surprised at how it's charted either.

For what it’s worth, my brother’s done promotion for Marvin’s DJ shows recently, and apparently he said the aim was to get the album to #1. So he must have been fairly confident with their pre-orders so far.

Did they do any bundles with the tour tickets?

If the aim was to get the album to number 1, they’re failing miserably. I saw a lot of people cancelling and refunding their orders when the “signed” albums turned into “printed signed inserts.”

They may want a #1 album but I don’t think they’ll be anywhere close.

As mentioned above everyone that pre-ordered signed CD and vinyl got an email to say it would now be a signed insert - it also said that the CD insert would be signed by all members and one band member for the vinyl insert? Added to that the M&G issue.

They could have done more to push the single - promo has been minimal and they are the kind of act that could release signed CD singles to create a bit of excitement about the release with the fanbase.

Honestly, this is all looking more and more like a All Saints Studio 1 situation to me where everyone just have waaaay too unrealistic expectations.

December sales might not be as massive as they used to be, but it's a reach for them that far. I'd get it if they were releasing in a quiet week, but...

I don't wish to get too despondent and dramatic - we do after all live in a current climate where, up until less than 24 hours ago, Jesy Nelson looked like she still had a bankable solo career. Nothing is a certainty.

But all the factors highlighted above aren't really screaming success at the moment. As I said I hope I'm proved wrong because based on the two songs so far it sounds like an album I will love every second of.

I'm surprised as has been said above that they've not yet leapt on the CD single bandwagon - hell even The Wanted got there before them on that one. That said it's only just starting to get playlisted so that could yet be up their sleeve.

But that said, I feel like what good will and momentum was around when they first announced this tour over 18 months ago literally fell away as the pandemic raged on.

The thing is though - what is a "successful record" for JLS these days? They're group who went out on a whimper and it doesn't feel like they've been gone long enough for nostalgia to properly kick in. Still, if they strategise and release in the right week they might get a high-peaking album with so-so overall sales. They could probably continue touring and let that fund their music if they play the cards right, a la how All Saints have done. However a December release and the comment above that they're expecting a number one album makes me think that their expectations for it are waaaaay off.

Exactly this 👆 All Saints are in fact a perfect model for such a setup for an older act with a more established niche fanbase, where they can release new music and continue to trade on the groundswell of support and praise they continue to receive for their earlier imperial phase material, whether that's their own tours or supporting Take That or Westlife as they have done.

JLS probably don't realise this yet - and if Marvin's comments above about aiming for number one are true then, whilst admirable, are unrealistic and so I suspect they don't - but unfortunately because of how youth centric mainstream media like radio and Spotify etc remains these days you have to approach and work with what outlets are available to you in the right way. They've got some things right so far; great first single and instant grat track, Radio 2 playlist, a few TV performances and interviews - but that's it. Just some things.

Steps on the other hand are again a perfect example of how to maximise what audience and goodwill you have with new material whilst maintaining the audience that grew up with you.

Their giving me Liam Payne solo album Q4 release chart run vibes at the moment.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey Oct 12 2021, 06:34 PM

and Busted's 'Night Driver' having a November release with a #13 peak as well

(though of course their follow-up in March 2019 reached #2!)

Moves up to A List at Radio 2.

They've started their tour.

I've seen some clips. Interestingly they've added a key change to 'Proud'. I recall a review of the song (when it was first released) suggesting that it lacked one.

Now added to the playlist at Capital:
