Before Christmas, Nelly Furtado shared some footage from her recording sessions with Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins. Now the singer hits the studio with Salaam Remi (Amy Winehouse, Nas) to record the follow-up to her multi-platinum English album Loose, due next summer. “It has a real classic sound to it, a sound that’s really authentic, super soulful,” says Nelly.

He produced the tracks from her Best of. Says it all.

Ok, sounds interesting, looks like she is going back to her Folklore root.

Posted by: Liаm Dec 29 2011, 05:11 PM

6 years too late love drama.gif I do hope she doesn't just do Loose part 2 and expect to get away with it, though by the sounds of it it'll be Folklore part 2, which I'm happy with. Still can't see that working particularly well commercially but as long as they're not as bad as the Best Of tracks...

Keep reading T.S.I as S.T.I, it's the whole Jessica Simpson- A Public Affair thing which I still always read as A Pubic Affair

Posted by: Eric_Blob Dec 29 2011, 08:26 PM

I hope it's a Loose Part II rather than the I'm Like a Bird/Broken Strings type stuff.

I kind of wish she released an album sooner. If she'd released an (English) album every 2 years, she'd have remained as one of the biggest pop girls in the world, like she was during 2006/2007.

QUOTE
Nelly Furtado is prepping for a major comeback in 2012, teaming up with songwriter Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins on her forthcoming album.
In a new behind-the-scenes clip from the 33-year-old star, she talks about her strong connection with the Grammy-winning producer. “This is my first time working with Rodney Jerkins,” she says. “I only met him about six weeks ago actually. We hit it off creatively. We definitely speak a creative language together and it’s really fun working with him.”

Furtado also praised Jerkins for his “amazing pop sensibilities” and prodigious piano skills in below video, which she posted on her website on Dec. 23. According to the singer, the duo has recorded 10 songs for the new release, which is slated for a summer release.

Recently, Furtado debuted a new song called ‘Mystery,’ and promised fans she would be hitting the road for at least two years to promote her new LP. The full-length was originally going to be called ‘Lifestyle,’ but the singer has since changed its title, and says she’ll be revealing the new album name “in the coming months.”

Furtado’s new effort will be her first English language release since 2006′s ‘Loose.’ In addition to Jerkins, the Canadian star has reportedly collaborated with the likes of Pharrell Williams, Tiesto and Timbaland and Nas on the project.

Here's the song Mystery:

I'm pretty sure the Nas collab is true. Nelly said on Twitter last year (or early this year) that she did a song with him. And she talks about him again in that video in the OP, and she's working with one of his producers. I really hope with Timbaland she can make another smash like Say It Right or Maneater.

I just want a good solid pop album from her, similar to Loose, where you had the dance tracks but then songs like All Good Things which were reminiscent of her past albums, and i liked Night is Young and Girlfriend In This City from the best of.

You were the only one. I'd love an album like 'Folklore' (who wouldn't) but we're not going to get that with Darkchild or Salaam Remi.

Posted by: Liаm Dec 30 2011, 11:29 AM

I didn't mind Night Is Young but it's not the right sound for her at all. The other new tracks on the GH were definitely awful though.

'Try' pt. 2 please!

She's going for retro-soul.

I think Stars is amazing. Although it wasn't really a new track as she had been performing it when she was touring Loose.

Posted by: Downtech Dec 30 2011, 07:05 PM

Great music... thnx

Posted by: Silver Rocket Dec 31 2011, 02:25 AM

She's missed the boat on this one, almost the dictionary definition on how to squander a glittering career. Shame really.

Posted by: cookie_monster Dec 31 2011, 03:17 AM

Nelly who?!

It may work out for her, but with the line up of Nas and Timbaland is a bit of a time warp. We're almost in 2012 Nelly! It's been SIX years!

Posted by: tonyttt31 Dec 31 2011, 09:28 AM

I don't see how a break like this can squander a glittering career? Surely the music is what counts.

Just because Rihanna has been relentlessly visible for half a decade doesn't mean everyone has to do it. It's her choice to release music and do it in any way she sees fit.

Posted by: Arrs Dec 31 2011, 09:37 AM

I don't know what I'm looking for from Nelly Furtado more - the Folklore pt.2 or Loose pt.2. Folklore is much more unique but Loose is just absolutely brilliant from the beginning to the end. One of my all-time favourite albums.

Posted by: tonyttt31 Dec 31 2011, 10:10 AM

All I want is good tunes - no matter what the style.

Posted by: Liаm Dec 31 2011, 10:14 AM

I'm a bit conflicted. What I love about Nelly is that she's great at shifting styles each album but maintaining quality, but I also want another Folklore laugh.gif But I agree with Tony actually, as long as I good it doesn't really matter I guess.

Night Is Young had great verses, but as soon as the chorus hits, it is all just so limp which is a shame because half a great song is most certainly there. I hope that she can pull off another 'Maneater' but I think she has most certainly missed the boat entirely.

It squandered her career for many reasons... first and foremost, although Loose was huge, it was the first time she'd felt like a megastar and she couldn't afford a five year break before new English language material, she should have kept up a presence, even if just by guesting on other peoples' singles (beyond Timbaland). You have to keep yourself in the public eye because unless you're Sade or Kate Bush or some other exception to the rule then people won't bother remembering to look out for your music when it does eventually come. The world of pop moves way too fast for that.

Maybe Nelly doesn't want to be huge and that's fine but I think most people work on the assumption that the kind of popstar who works with Timbaland and Danja and Darkchild is looking to be big. It's a fair assumption to make, wouldn't you say?

I agree. I think part of reason why Xtina flopped with Bionic was because she left it too long (also the release strategy was wrong totally). I think Nelly will go one of two ways - total flop like Bionic or surprise 'hit' era like J-Lo or Nicole Scherzinger.

First Single is called: 'Big Hoops (Bigger The Better)'

Posted by: toby Mar 28 2012, 11:28 PM

Why did she have to murder her career. I loved her but then she just disappeared sad.gif

Posted by: Silver Rocket Mar 28 2012, 11:35 PM

I seriously think what happened with her GH and the single from it is testament that she's pretty much over, but time will tell.

I'm interested in hearing this anyway. Not going to lie, I LOVED 'Loose', a definite guilty pleasure of mine! Although she should step away from 'Darkchild' though, I can't remember the last time he produced anything worth listening to.

We all thought that after 'Folklore' flopped (well I did anyway) and then she came back with 'Maneater' and BAM!
I do agree the massive gap has done her more harm than good but the GH released off the back of no new album and just thrown out there with minimal promotion and a hideous single to support it probably didn't help either.

It could go either way I guess. All depends on the material and how its promoted.

Posted by: Atonement Mar 29 2012, 12:01 PM

I don't know if she's working with Timbaland or not. If she is, I think she has a shot at a comeback. If she's not, I doubt she's ever gonna be ''relevant'' again. She's been out of the spotlight for way too long like Jark has said.
Timbaland is definitely one of the best producers around, he knows how to make a hit. Songs that he produced in the 90s and early 00s still sound incredibly refreshing. If she's working with him I have faith in a comeback.

Posted by: dannjohn3 Mar 29 2012, 08:02 PM

I'm not sure you can be relevant if you take a 6 year break, unless you're Kate Bush.

Not much you can do if the creative juices aren't flowing.

I feel Big Hoops will be a mess and I find it odd that they're releasing the album two months after the single as I don't see it taking off immediatly if at all but a Nelly album will always be interesting to me.

Luckily the majority of people haven't heard The Night Is Young. I wish I could say the same.

I always thought Nelly could no wrong but then she released Night Is Young......

Posted by: Davidson Apr 6 2012, 07:43 PM

I hoping Nelly can have a J.Lo type resurgence with her career, as she was great once, and I pray she can pull it out the bag again. 'The Night Is Young' was so poor, it was unbelievable.

Posted by: Liаm Apr 6 2012, 07:49 PM

I don't think Night Is Young is quite as bad as everyone makes out, it was just a major mistake she released it as a single imo, especially as the lead for the GH and that was probably why it flopped.

Posted by: Umi Apr 6 2012, 07:51 PM

Night Is Young made her look like an old woman trying to be "down with the kids" for me. The video was awful.

I do agree to an extent, the verses are actually alright, the chorus is just so so weak, it makes the whole thing very poor.

'Big Hoops (Bigger the Better)' is the best song title of the year already. Let us hope it is amazing and Nelstarish.

Also read on wiki (with source) the standard version will be 14 tracks and deluxe at least 18. Too bad the lead single is not produced by Timbaland, but I really hope it's gonna be good. Would like to have another strong album like Loose.

That clip of the lead single sounds quite Timbaland-esque anyway I think. It sounds quite good. It sounds like it could be a hit, and it's not generic either which is good.

It doesn't really sound that much like Run The World anyway. It's more like Kelly Rowland's Motivation with a slightly more hip-hop/Timbaland edge. I did love Run The World but the two can't really be compared.

Run The World is brilliant and this has the potential to be brilliant too. If Big Hoops is as brrap as the clip implies, and it turns out to be a hit, I hope it marks the end of the electro dance era.

Why does everyone keep mentioning Timbaland? This is produced by Darkchild. He has produced 8 songs on the new album.

From what I've read she went back into the studio with Timbaland once the Loose project had ended. But didn't like the results. Moved onto the spanish album and for the last 2 years shes been working on this.

I don't really get fanboi over pop artists (besides M.I.A. perhaps) but Nelly is just so lovely, charismatic and quality. Such a likeability. Always changing up styles, trying out new things. Doing what she wants and taking her time with it. It's like an inverse almost to what Nicki Minaj has become or is becoming. A comparison I wish I could articulate better but cannot do so at this moment in time.

01 Maneater
02 Promiscuous
03 I'm Like A Bird
04 All Good Things (Come TO An End)
05 Try
06 Turn Off The Lights
07 Manos Al Aire

Controvershhh having Say It Right fairly low I know, but massive wub.gif to all these!

Gwen, Nelly and Shakira all releasing albums in the same year. 14 year-old Ryan would be dying right now. I still remember buying Folklore on holiday, hearing Try for the first time and then smelling the recycled booklet. THERE HAS YET TO BE A NICER SMELLING BOOKLET.

***RATE AHOY***
01 Try
02 Turn Off the Light
03 Explode
04 Powerless (Say What You Want)
05 One-Trick Pony
06 Hey, Man!
07 Maneater
08 All Good Things (Come to an End)
09 Shit on the Radio (Remember the Days)

Actually agree so much with this! Nelly's got this really warm friendly vibe to her, but also has the ability to give a look of pure eliteness. She can look killer if desired.

Posted by: Liаm Apr 11 2012, 07:26 PM

Do It is my least favourite single from her too, in fact it's probably my least favourite on Loose actually. It's not totally awful but I never really 'got' it and it's never made me think anything other than 'meh'.

Hey,Man! wub.gif

GAH NELLY FURTADO.

Posted by: Silver Rocket Apr 11 2012, 07:27 PM

I love 'Do It', although like with 'In God's Hands' I much prefered it when it was an album track than a single...

1. Say It Right
2. Try
3. Powerless (Say What You Want)
4. Maneater
5. In God's Hands
6. Do It
7. All Good Things (Come To An End)
8. Picture Perfect
9. Afraid
10. Shit On The Radio (Remember The Days)

I did it quickly so may not be 100% accurate, but it's just about right.

That 1 minute clip sounds so amazing. biggrin.gif I'm wondering about the radio airplay though. I mean, in 2007 radio would've eaten up a song like that, but now I'm not so sure... They might not play it because there's not enough "bright" synths in it.

I don't think it's THAT good though. I think there will be a lot of "2006 and late" talks, as the sound is quite similar to her Timbaland work.

And also: it might flop quite hard or be a minor top-10 hit. I'll wait until the whole package (HQ + video) is revealed.

5.Maneater
6.Turn Off The Light
7.All Good Things (Come To An End)
8.Promiscuous

Bare in mind she was semi-big with 'Whoa! Nelly', fell off the radar with 'Folklore' and became an internationally pop star with 'Loose'. On the basis of 'Big Hoops' I can see her being massive once more. She's just got IT. Could it be a big number 1?

Posted by: ☜★☞ Apr 16 2012, 11:06 PM

I'm a bit ON THE FENCE to be honest you guyz. I mean I think the beat is FIRE as they do say in certain circles. I like the ATMOSPHERE, she brings that Nelly charm to the vocals... I just wish there was a bigger hook/chorus. It stops it being great. It also has shades of Not Myself Tonight for reasons I can't really explain. It feels very short once you take away the intro and outro. 8/10 anyway and if it just serves as a reintroduction to Nelly the world conquering popstar then I'm so ON BOARD.

Posted by: Ryan Apr 16 2012, 11:29 PM

I know I sound like a proper little gay fan boy (but its NELLY) but the stuff I've read online about this is strange. People are saying her voice has changed? That she is trying to put on an accent like Rihanna? Eh eh eh? Listen to most of Whoa Nelly and her voice has always been like this. A little bit gimmicky for want of a better word.

As for it doing well I'm not sure. Nelly isn't really the type of artist that has a loon/solid fanbase in my opinion. Not like the likes of GaGa, Britney etc. She goes away and people aren't really arsed for more. I think this will have a She-Wolf esque success.

The press release is fabulous:

QUOTE
Nelly Furtado has confirmed details of her new album.

The singer will release The Spirit Indestructible on June 18 and a day later in the US, preceded by lead single 'Big Hoops (Bigger The Better)' on June 4.

Furtado, who co-wrote every track on the LP, has worked with Rodney Jerkins (Michael Jackson, Lady GaGa), Bob Rock (Metallica), Dutch DJ Tiesto and John Shanks (Take That, Michelle Branch).

She said: "I began writing these songs around the time I released my Spanish album Mi Plan. I was in a great headspace, feeling refreshed and ready to really deliver in English again.

"This album is all about positivity, youth, good energy, and the relentlessness of the spirit. I want people to live this music the way we did when we wrote it.
I want them to jump, dance, scream, laugh, cry, love and vibe to it, and to turn it up very loud everywhere."

A deluxe edition will also be available, featuring several songs produced by Fraser T. Smith (Adele) and Furtado herself.

The Spirit Indestructible is Furtado's first English-language studio album since 2006's 'Loose', which topped the US charts and was certified multi-platinum in 32 countries after selling 10 million copies worldwide.

This is now a 9/10 and it ain't slowing down. Masterful use of autotune and vocal chopping ought to be complemented. Stunning production which does its worst to obliterate your speakers. Sly hooks buried in every part of the song which gradually unfold. What a comeback. It's always so lovely to hear evidence of a popstar's determination to be part of the big league.

I am glad to hear you have come around. Do you think it'll be a hit here in the UK? It seems to have gotten nothing but high praise across the net and Radio 1 are bound to A List it. Sounds like a total summer anthem. The US relies a lot more on adds and what not so I'm not so sure. I think it has cross platform appeal so could be absolutely huge there.

This is easily the best pop single of the year. The production is just insane. Hooks littered everywhere.

Absolutely LOVING this. Wasn't actually that fussed on a comeback single from Nelly after she farted out that Greatest Hits and the terrible 'Night Is Young' but she's certainly back on form with a song strong enough to maybe have her ridiculously long break justified and not a big deal. At the end of the day if a song is good enough it will do well, and this most certainly is.

I love this review and think it is amazingly true:

QUOTE
[SINGLE REVIEW]NELLY FURTADO – “BIG HOOPS (BIGGER THE BETTER)”
SCORE: 4.5/5

Can you believe that it’s been six-years since Nelly Furtado released her career-defining opus Loose? Actually, you probably can. It feels like an eternity since Nelly ran the world with Timbaland and Justin Timberlake; so long that it’s hard to even remember that she was, at one point, the biggest female pop star on the planet.

But Nelly’s never been one to play by the rules, and if you’ve followed her since her Whoa, Nelly! days, it’s not entirely surprising that she put her Top Forty pop career on hold to get married, release a Spanish-language album, and start her own record label. Nelly Furtado follows her gut and does what she wants, and that sentiment couldn’t be any more true when it comes to her crazy new single “Big Hoops (Bigger The Better)”.

“Big Hoops” is Loose in a post-Diplo world. Amidst a warped, apocalyptic Hip-Hop beat courtesy of Darkchild, Nelly spits swagger, drops double entendres, and trills like a much sharper Rihanna.

“I don’t wanna talk about sex / Wanna express myself tonight,” Nelly proclaims, right before dropping a truck load of sexual innuendo. “I can go fast / I can go slow / I can go places nobody else goes.”

“Big Hoops” is so tricked-out that it’s hard to even pinpoint the actual chorus, but that’s not a problem, because the real hook is in the intro and outro when size queen Nelly chants, “thebiggerthebetterthebetterthebigger,” over and over again.

It’s like Nelly and I share the same brain!

Just when you think “Big Hoops” has come to a heaving climax, Nelly giggles, “Oh, I thought this song was over. Nope, it ain’t over yet”, leaving the door open for Darkchild to come in and drop a mean drum & bass kiss-off à la Bjork’s “Crystalline”.

“Big Hoops” is without a doubt the “Run The World (Girls)” of 2012, but where “Run The World” was stale, “Big Hoops” is fresh; where “Run The World” was messy, “Big Hoops” is just crazy enough to work; where Beyonce failed, Nelly has succeeded.

With “Big Hoops”, Nelly’s reclaimed her individuality and waved her middle finger right in the face of today’s dance-drenched pop charts. It may not match the success of her past hits, but that’s okay, because Nelly Furtado just proved that she’s still the freshest diva in the game.

I watched some video of Nelly the other day saying the inspiration for the song was the music and culture she was involved in when she was a teenager, so that's probably what it's to do with. biggrin.gif

I noticed Big Hoops is on Capital's playlist!!! cheer.gif

But I'm still a bit cautious. Capital often playlist songs, yet you never ever hear the songs actually being played, but it's a good sign nonetheless.

That AEIOU thing sounds interesting. Takes me back to the time Nelly was popular and there was that phase of all the female pop stars endlessly spelling out words in their songs. laugh.gif

That actually sounds better than Big Hoops for me, I do like Big Hoops but the accent brings it down a bit for me. This seems a more subtle track.

There's a very enjoyable interview up on the Popjustice front page. This really made me sit up and go WHOA (Nelly!):

Rihanna has released five albums since ‘Loose’.
"Oh my god! That’s amazing."

(It's actually four but even so.)

Posted by: Slick May 3 2012, 03:04 PM

This has now been elevated from 'quite good I suppose' to 'actually good, yes.' I'm unsure how it will do chart-wise still because I've not seen or heard any offline buzz about it at all but I do hope it is a hit.

Posted by: ☜★☞ May 3 2012, 03:12 PM

That shot reminds me of the 'Folklore' era. Really cannot wait for this, so happy it's been playlisted on Radio 1 already. Hopefully airplay will build by the time it's released and it'll be massive. Have a good feeling. wub.gif

Posted by: Klumzee May 3 2012, 05:38 PM

I think it could be a top 5 hit! I've got this feeling that it'll be a long runner with a #4 peak. It's weird how much of a grower it is, I used to hate it a couple of weeks ago but I just love it with every listen now wub.gif

Posted by: Umi May 3 2012, 05:43 PM

I see Big Hoops having a run more like Climax but a longrunning hit is possible too I guess!

Like that artwork very much. And the deluxe is better than the standard which is ALWAYS appreciated.

Posted by: Liаm May 3 2012, 05:51 PM

I really just can't predict this, it could literally be a massive hit but just as easily flop, I'm actually really looking forward to seeing how it does because it's not immediately obvious, mostly with big stars like this it's 'oh, obvious number 1 for 2+ weeks' but as usual Nelly isn't following!

Did anyone read her popjustice interview?it didnt reveal much except there is a track called ''The Spirit Indestructible'' it was more about the making of the album and Rihanna.

Posted by: Atonement May 5 2012, 12:01 PM

'Something' sounds good, especially Nas' part. I hope it's also on the album and not just a b-side to 'Big Hoops'.

'Big Hoops' is #1 in the Dutch tip chart so it'll definitely enter the official top40 next week. It also entered the Dutch top100 at #81.

No big name rappers really (Nas is hardly Jay-Z), so again no conforming to the expected trends!

Posted by: Atonement May 7 2012, 07:01 PM

I'd say Nas is a pretty big name! I think his album Illmatic is pretty well known.
Would've liked to see more colabs with rappers but oh well.

A song named Bucket List? Hah!
Please no ballads on this one Nelly, don't need that from you. They kind of ruined Loose. I know Try was beautiful and possibly my favorite Nelly song but ballads just don't go on an album that has upbeats like Big Hoops.

Posted by: B.r.É May 7 2012, 07:57 PM

Nas is a VERY big name! He might not be quite as relevant as he once was but he's still one of the biggest names in rap.

The Kenyan Boys Choir? Odd.

Posted by: Atonement May 7 2012, 08:00 PM

Is that that choir that ruined Afraid? I still need to hunt them down and smack them. I can only imagine how she was thinking : 'wow I have a great song with a MASSIVE guitar line, let's ruin it with a bunch of pre-teen boys singing the chorus'.

How can the ballads on Loose have ruined the album? True, most of them didn't fit in with the Timbaland tracks, but I wouldn't say they were completely out of place. Say It Right and All Good Things were big hits across the globe, so they were good choices I'd say. I think she stayed true to her musical roots by a track like All Good Things and even In God's Hands. A few of the ballads were the highlights from Loose for me.

Posted by: Umi May 7 2012, 09:21 PM

In God's Hands was horrendous. I'll give you All Good Things and Say It Right (if that counts) though.

I wouldn't really call Nas a big name now. He's hardly relevant like, at all.

I wouldn't really call Say It Right a ballad (at least it really fits in) and All Good Things is good as a closer, I just think that In God's Hands, Show Time and Te Busqué (as great as that one is) kind of ruin the album's momentum. It just doesn't really go with the club tracks, and I really like cohesive albums.

I know she has always had a nasally voice but its like shes trying to be non understandable on these new tracks. Maybe I will get into it but so far I cant say Im a fan which is a shame as I loved Big Hoops.
Edit: I pray the horse at the end was just part of the radio station putting a noise on the end, not part of the song.

The best quality so far is here:

I am quite liking it so far though but from what I can tell it has nothing on 'Big Hoops', I need to hear an HQ though before I can properly judge.

Posted by: Davidson Jul 5 2012, 11:21 PM

Sounds much better in HQ however I thought her voice sounded nasal on Big Hoops but this is much worse. I am hoping it does well, although I would be majorly surprised if it did, I can see a #38 smash coming her way.

Posted by: ▲▲▲ Jul 6 2012, 05:54 AM

The production is infuriatingly dire. It sounds like a cheap demo. The melody is there but everything else is godawful.

Posted by: Liаm Jul 6 2012, 06:14 AM

It took a couple of days but TSI has really grown, I actually much prefer it to Big Hoops which I quickly went off of. The first 50 seconds or so is awfully clunky though with the different instrumental and that, also no way will this be a hit.

I'm still waiting for the proper amazing stuff I know she's easily capable of, 'really good' isn't enough tbh.

Posted by: Atonement Jul 6 2012, 09:42 AM

Really don't like 'The Spirit Indestructable'. It doesn't seem to go anywhere at all while it seems to be dragging on forever.
It also looks like she's tried to pick every cheesy line that she could find and put it together in a song.

Posted by: ✖ leww ✖ Jul 6 2012, 09:45 AM

I just echo everyone else, it's so boraaaang and clunky sad.gif

People wanted a 'Folklore' out of this album, but I'd rather she did another commercial album like 'Loose' (which she absolutely shined on) if this is the best she's gon do

Posted by: Casey__ Jul 6 2012, 10:54 PM

Posted by: J-o-e Jul 7 2012, 01:48 PM

Posted by: J-o-e Jul 18 2012, 06:43 PM

She looks bloody awful in the mountain scenes. The whole things just choppy and inconsistent, its a shame really I feel like if she was going to comeback and flop I would at least want it to be with non-comercial beautiful singles...this however...is just bad all round.

Posted by: Umi Jul 18 2012, 07:16 PM

I quite like the video actually, it's pretty and mountain scenes are always a good thing if you ask me. The song is growing to an extent but it still feels very unfortunate. There's a good song in there but they haven't utilised it properly.

Posted by: Liаm Jul 18 2012, 07:20 PM

Oh dear, the video is pretty disappointing...

I do actually really like the song though, even with the faults (ie the production). It's really gonna bomb though, like seriously it'll end up doing worse than Big Hoops and that was a flop and a half. Idk, it's not a bad song at all it's just with all the wait she needs something much better to appeal to everyone again and get a hit, this just doesn't have 'it'.

Posted by: يعقو Jul 19 2012, 02:12 PM

Lord have mercy. 'Spirit' stinks. Even the nasal bothers me. How can they think releasing the album on the back of this is a good idea?

She evidently shouldn't have been allowed so much creative control.

I do like the song and I think it does have huge potential there somewhere. But her voice isn't particularly nice to listen to with these two latest tracks. What happened with her voice on the tracks? It just sounds so... hollow. laugh.gif I know that quite often some sort of layering thing is used (like on Morning After Dark). I can't see Spirit Indestructible doing big things to be honest, which is a shame bearing in mind how popular she was at one point. (My favourites of her tracks being I'm Like A Bird, All Good Things and Say It Right.)

Posted by: Silver Rocket Jul 20 2012, 08:02 PM

I don't really get why they delayed the album thinking this would do better than 'Big Hoops', I could feasibly see it even missing the top 100.

It's an alright song, but it does not sound at all like a hit and as for that video...

Posted by: suggy Jul 20 2012, 08:31 PM

I don't like the way she sings lately, it's like she has a peg on her nose, she used to so much better than this. sad.gif

The lovely beautiful Nelly. heart.gif

I adored Loose these 2 singles have done nothing for me, hoops was about a load of old nothing and this one is hardly exciting hate to say it but think shes left it too long, not only that the material just isnt up to scratch shes capable of so much better imo.

Posted by: Ryan741 Jul 22 2012, 10:18 PM

I'm loving 'Spirit Indestructible', much better than 'Big Hoops' which has never quite clicked with me (however it has grown). The video is really good too! This deserves to do really well, but I don't think it will do! sad.gif

I do love Nelly ballads though, this, 'All Good Things', 'Try', 'Forca' and 'Powerless' are all great! 'Powerless' is more of a mid-tempo, but oh well it is probably my favourite Nelly song along with 'All Good Things'! laugh.gif

a slight improvementon the previous single, her voice does seem to have got worse though sad.gif

Apparently Parking Lot is going to be the second single in the US...when really it should be worldwide. Sounds amazingly catchy:

That actually sounds like a better single choice, I still have faith in the album to be honest - I can see this being one of those horifically handled eras with sub-par single choices a la Bionic. If nothing else it's certainly gonna flop that bad!

Posted by: dannjohn3 Jul 31 2012, 12:38 PM

"The Spirit Indestructible" is one of her best singles. What is with all the hate? Just because it lacks a dance beat and Pitbull, clearly.

What a stupid comment, I don't think barely anyone on this forum can even stand Pitbull. Its just a messy clunky song, for me it gets good on the second verse when it picks up and before you know it its slowed back down with some tacky cheering noise and the awful middle 8....theres plenty of reasons for people to hate it....dance beat and Pitbull aren't either.

I actually don't mind The Spirit Indestructible (I even prefer it to Big Hoops which I don't rate at all), it is an awful single choice though no matter how you look at it, the production is the main fault really.

Much as I dislike Big Hoops, it was a much better and more commercial choice of single (and that it did much for it laugh.gif), and the same can be said for Parking Lots by the sounds of things.

Its catchy, I wouldn't say its necessarily conventional, and I wouldn't even say Spirit is unconventional...just a good song lost in bad production and a nasally voice. Whatever it is, it sounds much more promising for her as a single than anything else we've heard.

Posted by: Silver Rocket Jul 31 2012, 11:04 PM

I definitely agree that 'Parking Lot' is a stronger song/single sounding track than 'The Spirit Indestructible'. It's pretty strong and has catchiness, funkiness.

I do like 'The Spirit Indestrictible', but there's no way it sounds like a hit whatsoever.

Posted by: Tom TYP Kay Aug 3 2012, 01:41 PM

The Spirit Indestructible just properly clicked with me, I think she's going down quite a similar path to Jessie Ware, Jess Mills etc, which is just Dandy*.

Parking Lot sounds OK but I agree with whoever said it was kind of conventional.

I don't think the studio version has leaked. The one on youtube was just a rip of the sessions performance.

I am obsessed with it at the moment though. I don't think it will be a hit but it's still amazing.

Parking Lot sounds like the bigger hit, but I much prefer The Spirit Indestructible. PL is catchy but it's annoyingly so, I can see me going right off it if I listen to it too much.

If this really is the radio edit then she deserves to flop, like why do her songs from this era sound so good live, but so shit as a studio version.

Posted by: Mikal Aug 17 2012, 10:50 PM

I'm trynna get into her this time around, but I CAN'T. Something is missing, it's so bizarre seeing someone be so massive to struggle to release an album. I bet she's kicking herself for not taking full advantage of 'Loose'.

It all feels out of date too D:

Posted by: Atonement Aug 17 2012, 11:37 PM

I can only echo what's already been said. 'Big Hoops' took a while to grow on me but it did in the end, but 'Spirit Indestructable', 'Parking Lot' and 'Something' to a lesser extent are just total non-events. I know she got alot of criticism when she ''sold out'' with 'Loose' but at least the material was still worth sticking up for. I would tell her to get her ass back in the studio with Timbo but he seems to have lost his way as well.

I'm surprised by that, she did an interview in France only a couple of weeks ago talking about the album (and how it was out in a few weeks). They've left it really late to push back this again. But I guess it was always likely to happen seeing as it was going to completely bomb. I actually don't mind Parking Lot (and Spirit Indestructible grew, slowly) but obviously it wouldn't do anything, ever. If we never get this album I'll be disappointed in all honesty. No, it likely wouldn't have been anything amazing, but it could have been solid and she clearly loves it. I don't really know where she can go from here. The default route to go down is Loose 2.0 but Timbo isn't capable of making that these days. She's f***ed, really.

Posted by: Propilot87 Aug 18 2012, 02:57 AM

Sigh...if only she released something sooner after Loose maybe she'd still have some relevancy today...Parking Lot was the only thing i've heard so far (based on that live performance) that sounded promising but now that i've heard the studio version...its just not that great, can't see it going anywhere. Its a shame she's having so much trouble getting a hit again, at this rate she'd have to team up with someone like Rihanna, Beyonce or David Guetta in order to have success.

Posted by: J-o-e Aug 18 2012, 09:51 AM

There's talk that, that version might just be a backing track....we can only hope. I honestly dont know what her team are doing, like are they just going to release the album in a month without another single being released in America or the UK.

Posted by: cookie_monster Aug 18 2012, 02:21 PM

I agree, she should have definitely had the second single out to radio by now. This era has been terrible so far.

Posted by: Liаm Aug 18 2012, 02:24 PM

Total Jumping Trains vibes here, she's left it far too late. I know that they just want to have a successful era but the longer they leave it the more of a flop it'll be, so they may as well just get it out there for the fans as planned!

Or you know they could've just handled it properly in the first place but since when was that ever an option?

I don't always take the release schedule as gospel as singles can often be moved, cancelled or sometimes just put on there incorrectly, Its only a month left and I haven't seen it on any music channels, any radio playlists, Itunes, Nelly hasn't mentioned anything about it...for a single it just seems a little disjointed :/.

Posted by: J-o-e Sep 13 2012, 05:21 PM

I'm looking forward to the bonus tracks all being available, for me so far the highlights are Big Hoops, Enemy and Believers. This seems like a Bionic situation where Nelly/Christina recorded an album they loved but it wasn't necessarily what the label wanted so they drafted in Darkchild/Paolo to produce a few singles for it.

Not a bad album (compared to what I expected), in fact there are a few very good tracks, but my god this is gonna flop harder than Bionic and Heartbreak On Hold surely (I'm talking like 20k total sales, that pessimistic) there is literally NO hype at all or anything, I doubt anyone even knows it's out!

Waiting For The Night
High Life
Bucket List

And Circles is quickly growing.

And Big Hoops and Parking Lot remain brilliant.

Why is she singing "Big Hoops" when she as a new song coming out soon? blink.gif

Posted by: Liаm Sep 15 2012, 08:23 PM

I love how she lowered herself to Red Or Black in desperation, and then does a months old single!!!

Posted by: Jark Sep 15 2012, 08:34 PM

I don't see how doing Red or Black is any more desperate than doing Chatty Man, Graham Norton's show or whatever else personally. I'm sure the record company dictated to her which song to sing and it's obvious they don't have any kind of strategy whatsoever now.

I get the impression the label let her go away and record this album without any interference, only to realise when she delivered it that it contained no hits. I think the best thing she can do is move swiftly on to album number six with some carefully engineered A&R to ensure she has the hits in place.

Posted by: Jark Sep 15 2012, 09:17 PM

On another note the album is a huge grower. If you'd have told me a month ago this would be better than P!nk's effort I'd have told you to fuck me gently with a chainsaw.

Bucket List and Waiting for the Night should've been the first two singles. Too late now though!

Posted by: Silver Rocket Sep 15 2012, 10:27 PM

She performed 'Big Hoops' on Red Or Black? laugh.gif

As much as it's 100 times better than her current single, this campaign gets even more laughable. Jark's right, no strategy whatsoever. Maybe her record company (or her) have realised that it won't get any better than 'Big Hoops' this era and decided to cling on to that for dear life.

Posted by: _Chris Sep 17 2012, 05:04 PM

I love this album! Probably my favourite of the year so far.

01 End Game
02 Spirit Indestructible
03 Waiting For The Night
04 Big Hoops
05 Believers (Arab Spring)

Waiting For The Night 100% should have been the lead single, followed by Spirit Indestructible.

I actually think performing Big Hoops was the better option. Nothing is going to save the title track anyway, she's better off performing a track that the public vaguely knows/likes rather than her upcoming megaflop.

Posted by: Encore Sep 17 2012, 07:59 PM

Hmm, I bought the deluxe version today but Big Hoops seems to finish abruptly at 3:47 when the iTunes store page for the album lists it as 3:52 in length so it seems like there's a few seconds missing from the end of the song... unless iTunes have it wrong lol or whether it's meant to sound like that or not I don't know but it doesn't sound like the end of the song. Just wondered if that was the same for anyone else? (I have OCD when it comes to things like this haha). blush.gif

I like the video, but it hasn't done much for the song. It's not awful but it's just quite annoying and not much more than just OK, she needs a LOT more than this to be honest but obviously it doesn't really matter because this era is 99% dead sadly.

Posted by: Mikal Sep 20 2012, 09:09 PM

I just CAN'T understand how Loose being SO massive hasn't helped anything she released afterwards. It's bizarre, you'd expect SOME sort of 'comeback' boost, but there hasn't been any at all. DOA doesn't even begin, her career's been a disaster since the day Loose era ended.

Posted by: Silver Rocket Sep 20 2012, 09:11 PM

It's her own fault really for not capitalising on her success with the Loose era since then, attempting a proper comeback 6 years down the line isn't really going to do anything for her.

I suppose it's kind of astonishing when you consider back then she had the same sort of status someone like Katy Perry has now.

Perhaps bigger than Katy, Loose sold nearly 10 million world wide. I don't get what went wrong? The wait? Her producer for Loose kinda fizzled out after Loose and FutureSex/LoveSounds so I guess her music became dated.

It really is! It's so refreshing and uplifting!

Posted by: Atonement Sep 21 2012, 12:25 PM

The latter half of the album is pretty decent (although not very memorable), the first half is not. I like ''Waiting for the Night'' (why isn't that just called ''Day and Night''?) and ''Bucket List'' the most.
''High Life'' is ATROCIOUS. Her voice is on that song is like nails on a chalkboard. Especially in the ''La la la la la la'' parts. If ''Spirit Indestructible'' (song) had a decent hook then I might have been able to look past the bad production, but alas not. ''Parking Lot'' is just dull. ''Something'' is kind of cool thanks to Nas.

I expected more from the Remi productions to be honest, I mean for God's sake he's produced half of the ''Back to Black'' album, I don't know what went wrong here.

Posted by: Marina Hurts Sep 21 2012, 05:08 PM

My favourite tracks:

Spirit Indestructible
Big Hoops (Bigger the Better)
High Life
Waiting for the Night
Circles
Enemy
End of the World
Cry
Starlight
Soak It Up

That's basically an album! and the rest of the songs pretty decent too!

Posted by: SceneofSIXCrimes Sep 21 2012, 06:03 PM

It's done her no favours whatsoever by taking 6 years to release a follow-up - Christina even suffered after taking just 4 years in comparison.

Oh well, let's hope Fergie delivers after 7. kink.gif

The class of '06 aren't translating well into the Teenies are they?

Posted by: Davidson Sep 21 2012, 09:41 PM

I have created my own tracklisting for this:

1. Big Hoops (Bigger The Better)
2. Something (ft. Nas)
3. Waiting For The Night
4. End Game
5. Spirit Indestructible
6. Miracles
7. Bucket List
8. End Of The World
9. Circles
10. Enemy
11. Believers (Arab Spring)

It works so much better in this format. If that was the tracklisting I would actually think it was a very good album. 'Parking Lot' and 'High Life' bring it down a lot.

Something as the second song, really? biggrin.gif it's awful, such a mood killer. And you removed (the gorgeous) The Most Beautiful Thing!

I really like 'Something'. I think the Nas rap makes it though.

Enters at #41 in the Dutch album chart nocheer.gif

46 Nelly Furtado 2,637
Pitiful. I understand the lack of promotion, bad single choices and such but how can you go from a million selling album to this, Heartbreak On Hold is no longer the biggest flop of this year.

Posted by: Cremey Sep 24 2012, 06:54 PM

'Something' is one of the best!

Top five for me:
01 Miracles
02 Bucket List
03 Something
04 Believers (Arab Spring)
05 Circles

Misses the Top 50 in the USA, about 6k sales...

Posted by: Jark Sep 25 2012, 10:07 PM

Fabulous. Even the latest ALANIS MORISSETTE album opened with about 35k.

Posted by: Davidson Sep 25 2012, 10:58 PM

I don't even think this era can be called a 'flop' to be honest, as it really insults the other artists eras which have been labeled as such. I don't even think there is a name for THAT.

Posted by: Umi Sep 26 2012, 04:47 PM

#79 in the US with 5,731 sold. #18 in Canada - that feels almost worse.

Posted by: Mikal Sep 26 2012, 04:56 PM

This is getting embarrassing now...

Posted by: Liаm Sep 26 2012, 04:56 PM

Heartbreak On Hold suddenly looks like 21! That's just awful, going from an album selling over 10 million copies to one selling under 6k in one week in the US, like Davidson said, flop genuinely is not the word here it's just unbelieveable to be honest.

Posted by: Mikal Sep 26 2012, 05:00 PM

I hate to say it, but I've never seen a well established star do so badly before. I can't think of the last time a once massive star sold SO little?!

This will barely do 50k worldwide in the end...

Posted by: Jark Sep 26 2012, 05:17 PM

That could actually be a good thing. Most people won't even know she's had an album out so she won't be considered a flop.

Debuts at #3 in Germany behind 2 new entries

Yay. At least HoH isn't the biggest failure this year :3

Incurring such a huge flop can only make her bounce back better in the future is all we can hope for, that said, UK wise her greatest hits flopped and now this so its almost like she has been totally forgotten about. However she managed a top 20 single which is something Madonna did not manage with her last era so there is hope for the future, but i think this era is just dead for her now.

Also #3 in Switzerland and #8 in Austria. The German speaking world haven't deserted her! Heil Nelly! cheer.gif tongue.gif

Parking Lot is the single that might save it she just needs to promote it.....

Posted by: Euphorique Sep 29 2012, 03:33 PM

I dont like Parking Lot at all. Much prefer the other 2 singles

Posted by: Jark Oct 7 2012, 10:28 AM

Waiting for the Night is the next European single. Going to German radio soon. Not that it will do anything at all in the UK of course.

Gutted at how badly this album has done, I absolutely love it! The three singles, High Life, Bucket List, The Most Beautiful Thing, Waiting For The Night and Be OK are all varying shades of excellent. It's almost up there with Loose for me quality wise. Granted it's not as commerical by a long stretch but it didn't deserve such little success.

Despite this album and whole campaign being a complete mess. There are some really good gems on this album. She could have made a very solid ten track album from what's on there. It's a shame! I'm LOVING 'Hold Up', probably my favourite currently!

Posted by: kandrew Oct 24 2012, 03:57 PM

its such a shame about this whole project, i was so amped for it but the delays and hideous least single even the front cover is a none event! at least we still have the marvel that is loose :-)

Madonna may not have got a Top 20 single but she got a #1 album instead - Im sure Nelly would have prefered that anyday over a Top 20 underperforming single! laugh.gif

It has a real classic sound to it, a sound that’s really authentic, super soulful,” says Nelly.

This girl just keeps making videos for all my favourite songs on TSI!

Bucket List

and here's Waiting for the Night that hasn't been posted here
