There doesn’t feel like there’s enough characters to do that without it being an absolute death knell to the show, it could work but I can’t see it being as easy as that.
Although by chucking the deadwood who have been in the show a while and still not really come to anything (Zain, Dave and his family, Pearl/Sharon/sadly Zoe, Vicky, Beau, Dilly, Liberty, lowkey a few of the teens but they’re tied to the core families) you probably have a good half or more of the 20 sewn up. I do worry they will cull the interesting new characters like Kitty and Abe, both kind of feel like they have a potential shelf life with the storylines they’re in so I don’t know how they would survive a time jump. I can see them maybe just basically centring the show on the McQueens/Hutchinsons/Osbournes then maybe keeping like Maxine, Sienna and Misbah in their own little corners, and maybe they hold on to some of the newer faces and allow them to develop. I think they could chop the deadwood, trim the main families a bit (get rid of Beau, Hunter and Prince), and I think they can get to the 20 without too much damage but it does feel very Brookside and I don’t think it will be that straight forward. I could see a couple of the big names/mainstays jumping ship and that could be a death knell if they’re left with either boring characters or newbies that people aren’t invested in. Already confirmed to be leaving is Sharon, I do expect Pearl and Zoe to follow tbh |

I'm really intrigued to see how all of this is going to pan out on screen. Hollyoaks going back to a smaller cast will literally strip it right back to where it started. I do think people will switch off if we have just some core families so having extra characters who support/aren't tied to a family would certainly allow the show to retain its diversity which has always been its strong point but allow for multiple storylines too.

It’s bold but honestly I’d be more inclined to get rid of the bulk of the core families and keep the diverse/interesting characters, like we don’t really need Darren, Jack and Nancy if we’re being honest, and frankly even a chunk of the McQueens (Cleo, Hunter, Prince, even John Paul tbh) as blasphemous to HO as that may sound I can’t see the show being around in a few years anyway sadly so I kind of think they should go more bold, lean into the diversity and exciting storylines rather than just relying on stale characters that have been around for ages.Hollyoaks has always been bold and taken risks, done things no show would ever do, so why should they stop now?

Cindy to be the first big axing confirmed, really surprised at that and that means I highly doubt Dave or Mason will stay, Lizzie I could maybe see standing on her own especially with her presumably having Freddie’s baby

I don’t feel too optimistic of who the cast cull will be impacting if that’s the first name we’re losing.
I have a real hunch that it’s the characters who *need* axing who are gonna end up staying. I just really hope that the character mentioned above gets a real exit and isn’t just mentioned as having moved on as part of the time jump. They’ve put a insta post up and in there it’s revealed that They aren’t being killed off but yeah this is really an awful decision. |

I don’t feel too optimistic of who the cast cull will be impacting if that’s the first name we’re losing. Warren, Scott and Sharon are also said they're leaving I don't think Cindy is a big shock - she isn't part of a family, or larger group and therefore is expendable. I'd imagine anyone outside of the Osbornes, Hutchinson, Hay and McQueen units are likely to be heading for an axe. The remaining Chen Williams and I reckon the remaining Maaliks barring Dillon will be gone - Dillon being saved due to the Lucas storyline. The time jump will probably see them in a couple. I can see the McQueens being cut down - hopefully the Goldie, Prince, Hunter strand will be going. This post has been edited by ElectroBoy: 8th April 2024, 09:18 PM |

Shocked to hear that Cindy has been axed, I know there’s some tough decisions to be made with so many cast and crew required to be axed due to the reduction in episodes, but I would have thought someone that had been with the show for nearly 30 years would be immune. I get Hollyoaks has a much higher turnover than the other three soaps but familiarity with characters that viewers have grown up with and followed their journeys over a number of years is what has kept viewing figures up for as long as they have done and you would think Hollyoaks would take notice of this given it’s basically on the verge of being axed.

I'd imagine anyone outside of the Osbornes, Hutchinson, Hay and McQueen units are likely to be heading for an axe. The only thing that makes me think this is actually unlikely is this would leave Hollyoaks axing nearly every non-white cast member. Especially if it is indeed the Goldie strand of the McQueens who are also trimmed. With that racism scandal only a couple of years back, I'd think Hollyoaks would tread more carefully on that one. |

With a lot of characters coming back, idk it feels like they are chasing nostalgia a bit too much and not focusing on what they’ve got. They could easily cut deadwood and still keep interesting characters but with who’s gone so far I worry it could go the other way and they kind of have underdeveloped characters they’ve wasted for the last few years and it would just be a weird balance. Part of what makes HO good and fresh is that there are lots of characters and they aren’t always in the forefront, it’s paced well so you get a good mix of dynamics and storylines before anything feels too stale. I feel like focusing on less people, that won’t be the case?
For cuts potentially I’d probably go: Dilly - unless they really give her a stable relationship and set her up, or a business in the village, or something I don’t see the point. She’s just there faffing around the mansion Carter/Freya - she’s pointless and I think he should have some kind of dramatic commupance, I hope the time skip doesn’t put him with John Paul as yet another doomed relationship. Norma - without Warren, what need is there for her really, as fab as Glynis is. Beau - the Hutchinsons have enough with Ro’s storyline and the other two being older as well with the time skip could provide more storylines, there’s a strong crop of young actors coming up Zain - I’d be astounded if him and Misbah made it through the time skip as a couple and what else will he do really? Mason/Dave - I could make a case for Lizzie given Freddie getting her pregnant but I wouldn’t be that upset if she went too, although I don’t mind her Ethan - since I’ve been watching again, he’s been pretty pointless Pearl/Zoe - love Zoe but they really have squandered this family unit at least from what I’ve seen Maxine and John Paul - for similar reasons, both classics but they are the kinds of characters where you just seem to watch the same circles of misery like the writers don’t know what else to do with them JJ/Suzanne - obvious shelf life on JJ, I could see Suzanne leaving Frankie with Darren and Nancy to bolster their family unit a bit There is quite a lot of deadwood but it’s a shame they’ve spent years not developing these characters and then just cut them quite cruelly. I do like the time jump idea as that was really good for Neighbours when it came back, but I worry they will just use it as an excuse to not say anything about how or why people left, instead of the kind of missing pieces vibe that Neighbours had which kept you watching to fill in the blanks of certain storylines. I’d be astounded if Zoe and Pearl survived the cut, especially with Sharon going, I’m not sure they would bring Goldie back soon just to cut her, but they could bring her back to wrap up things I guess and the boys leave too. That only leaves the Maliks and Vicky with her brother and dad. When I look at things the way I have in this post, they’ve given a lot of the non white characters the square root of f*** all to work with lately! |

I don't even watch Hollyoaks but the JJ and Frankie storyline has been popping up on my tiktok and I'm hooked on it, the girl who plays Frankie is phenomenal, she is what makes it so compelling - I don't know if it's enough to commit me to watching this regularly as well but I'll definitely be keeping tabs on this to see how it plays out

Does it often happen when they 'age up' the teens? Watching tonight's episode Darren said Frankie is 15 and Lucas is 16. Frankie and JJ were born in 2011 so they'd actually be 13 now and Lucas born in 2009 making him now 15.. I guess it's sad to question it because it's a soap but it really threw me off, especially Frankie.

Some positive news on viewership since the producer change late last year and the crash week.
QUOTE Building on a huge hour-long crash episode back in January, Hollyoaks has experienced 40% growth in streaming episodes year-on-year and achieved 5.8 million minutes of watchtime on YouTube for the first quarter.
January's crash-themed special episode was Hollyoaks' most-streamed instalment since 2020, up 62% on the average from the previous four weeks. The soap has also found major success on social media, as Snapchat viewers have increased 350% year-on-year and TikTok viewership is up 116%. In March, there were 194 million viewers across the show's social platform. |
