Chart Commentary

It's my 300th chart this week, a huge milestone and one I never ever thought I'd reach! Thanks so much to everyone who's commented over the years (and I know I'm due to return a few comments kink.gif), and here's to 300 more!!

I suppose it's apt that in my 300th chart, the #1 comes from my favourite artist of all time. Well, more specifically, 1/5th of it. Nadine Coyle was part of Girls Aloud for 10 years, and in their hiatus years, she released a solo album, Insatiable. This was over a year before my chart began so its lead single and title track never charted, nor did follow-up standalone single Sweetest High. However, Nadine achieved a huge #1 hit with Something New as part of Girls Aloud in 2012, a song which still holds the record for most weeks at #1, with a total of eight non-consecutive weeks over three stints at the top. Go to Work follows in the footsteps of Something New and debuts at #1, giving Nadine her first hit as a lead artist, but whether it will hang around as long remains to be seen.

Comparing Nadine to her ex-bandmates, she's the third of five to have achieved a solo #1. Notably, Cheryl has two, with both Crazy Stupid Love and I Don't Care reaching the top in 2014. Sarah Harding was the second, perhaps surprisingly, as Threads made #1 in 2015. Kimberley made it to #2 with One Day I'll Fly Away back in 2013, but has yet to come even close to that. Nicola's at a disadvantage, as Beat of My Drum and Lucky Day would undoubtedly have been #1s had I started my chart just a few months earlier, but unfortunately that wasn't the case and her highest solo peak is #7, from b-side Memory of You (a Girls Aloud b-side too, re-recorded by Nicola). Her solo album Cinderella's Eyes remains comfortably the best solo GA album though!

Nadine
2015 29 I Could Be (Shane Filan & Nadine Coyle) | NAS | 29-X (1 week)
2017 01 Go to Work | 1 | 1-... (1+ weeks)

In most weeks, this song would've been an easy #1, but Nadine's comeback single proved too strong for The Tide, and Naked has to settle for a #2 debut. It's not all bad news, it's managed to peak higher than previous single Put the Cuffs On Me already, after that made #4 earlier this year. It matches their debut hit Young Love's #2 peak, but doesn't match #1 hit Click My Fingers yet. The American boyband, consisting of Drew Dirksen, Austin Corini, Levi Jones and Nate Parker, therefore notch up their fourth top 10 hit, and seventh top 40 hit in total, ahead of their debut album Young Love being released next month.

The Tide
2016 02 Young Love | 1 | 13-2-4-6-13-22-26-35-X-10-7-9-12-19-25-29-37-X-34-X (17 non-consecutive weeks)
2016 01 Click My Fingers | 2 | 13-1-7-4-3-9-14-19-26-29-33-34-37-32-35-34-X-26-X (17 non-consecutive weeks)
2017 04 Put the Cuffs On Me | 3 | 28-4-6-5-8-16-25-37-X (8 weeks)
2017 25 The One You Want | AT | 25-33-X (2 weeks)
2017 33 Holding On To You | AT | 33-X (1 week)
2017 12 Survive | B-SIDE | 12-27-X (2 weeks)
2017 02 Naked | 4 | 2-... (1+ weeks)

Frans Walfridsson made his chart debut earlier this year, as his very first release Emergency Call peaked at #8, and he finally follows it up with new single Tonight, which halves his personal best and debuts at #4. The Swedish singer (not to be confused with Frans Jeppsson-Wall, who represented Eurovision with my favourite song of 2016, If I Were Sorry) participated in Sweden's version of the Idol franchise, coming seventh in 2015.

Frans Walfridsson
2017 08 Emergency Call | 1 | 8-12-22-34-X (4 weeks)
2017 04 Tonight | 2 | 4-... (1+ weeks)

In possibly the most random chart move of the week, Declan McKenna claims this week's highest climber with Brazil, as it rockets into the top 10 for the first time, up to #7. It's been in the chart for six weeks, but since debuting at #20, it's been falling each week, until now. For no reason whatsoever, I've been playing it a lot this week, and naturally my chart reflects this as it zooms up to give the British singer/songwriter his second top 10 hit.

Declan McKenna
2017 03 Humongous | 7 | 18-3-8-16-27-38-X (6 weeks)
2017 07 Brazil | 1/6 | 20-21-24-28-32-7-... (6+ weeks)

The final new song in this week's top 10 comes from American boyband PRETTYMUCH, who finally make a leap of three places into the top tier. It's their first top 10, with their very first single, and they become the sixth boyband to grace my top 10 in the past three weeks - following The Vamps, The Shades, The Tide, CNCO and In Real Life. The five-piece, consisting of Edwin Honoret, Zion Kuwonu, Austin Porter, Brandon Arreaga and Nick Mara, are signed to Simon Cowell's label Syco, following in the footsteps of One Direction.
