Yeah second song. I like it sooo much.

Posted by: alt-Jade ∆ 9th March 2017, 09:48 PM

Not gonna lie but this isn't really clicking with me sad.gif the "na na na na ehhh" bit is quite nice but otherwise unspectacular. Maybe it'll be a grower, but for now boooo after 'Green Light' was so amazing and instant~

Posted by: Melobrama 9th March 2017, 09:52 PM

Maybe I'm just being a blind stan but I am lovinggg this as well. Kinda glad this isn't just gonna be an album of 'Green Light' x11 as much as I like that.

Posted by: Tinasha 9th March 2017, 10:06 PM

I know a lot of people seem to be making this comparison but the lyrics and melody of this reminds me a lot of Marina's ballad's like Happy. This is cute, but has nothing on Green Light which still slays me hard.

Posted by: liamk97 9th March 2017, 10:29 PM

It's no single by any means but I really like it as an album track. The piano melody is lovely from the moment it begins and Lorde's vocals keep you hooked onto the words.

Posted by: liamk97 9th March 2017, 10:33 PM

Unrelated but 'Yellow Flicker Beat' played after this finished and isn't it such a wonderful, slow-burning song? I don't think I ever appreciated it at the time.

Posted by: Melobrama 9th March 2017, 10:37 PM

It's definitely an album track but it's a pretty good album track. x

SUCH a beautiful song wub.gif

Posted by: alt-Jade ∆ 9th March 2017, 10:44 PM

'Yellow Flicker Beat' is indeed wondrous wub.gif I underrated it a bit at the time as well but then it suddenly hit me however many months later.

The Kanye rework is fantastic too for giving it that darker edge in the production heart.gif

(I feel a Lorde top 5/10 ranking coming on)

1) Green Light
2) Yellow Flicker Beat

3) Royals
4) Magnets

My top 2 slay everything else she has done, both so incredible!! wub.gif Loving the YFB love in this thread, an underrated gem heart.gif

Need to listen to the new one also!

Posted by: liamk97 9th March 2017, 11:07 PM

Yes Josh! 'Team' was always my favourite and, whilst I liked this as well, it annoyed me at the time that 'Royals' was so much more successful. 'Green Light' could easily overtake though.

I was so pleased when Team took off in the US, I was hoping the same would happen in the UK but at least it was a minor hit. It was my EOY 2014 #1 track! heart.gif

Posted by: Melobrama 9th March 2017, 11:57 PM

1 Royals (basic bitch choice but this probably still has to be my favourite, I mean it was #1 on my chart for like 11 weeks plus months more in the top 5 lmao)
2 Tennis Court (very close to flipping and calling this my fave)
3 Glory And Gore
4 Team
5 Magnets
6 Yellow Flicker Beat
7 No Better (this song is so underrated, why did it make no impact :'()
8 Buzzcut Season
9 Green Light (I don't really know how to rank this when it's still so fresh tbh but I think it'll end up somewhere around here xx it's not her best by any means but it's still pretty incred)
10 400 Lux

Or something like that. Every song on this list is like 11/10 best song ever tho lmao (and so is 'Ribs' which I didn't even have room for). I know I'm too much of a stan but her only song that I don't really like is 'Ladder Song'. ph34r.gif

She has SNL this weekend so needs two songs to perform

Is 'Liability' meant to sounds like My Chemical Romance 'Welcome to the Black Parade'? It sounds almost identical.

After the album please...

Posted by: mdh 10th March 2017, 08:26 PM

YESSS! What an awesome collab, hoping for a tropical banger (am I the only one who thinks it's great that Major Lazer and Lorde are collaborating?)

Posted by: Melobrama 10th March 2017, 08:37 PM

If it's a track featuring Vybz Kartel then it'll probably be something along the lines of 'Pon De Floor' (which is still Major Lazer's best song so yass if so, Lorde isn't an obvious name to collaborate with them but I'm here for it anyway).

I'm shocked that Vybz Kartel is still actually allowed to make music though?? mellow.gif

Posted by: Davidson 10th March 2017, 09:27 PM

Collaborating with a murder is a tad strange

Homemade Dynamite sounds fab too from her Coachella perf!

This is most likely going to be album of the year from what we've heard so far *.*

Posted by: Jade 20th May 2017, 06:19 PM

She announced the following track list yesterday:

01. Green Light
02. Sober
03. Homemade Dynamite
04. The Louvre
05. Liability
06. Hard Feelings/Loveless
07. Sober II (Melodrama)
08. Writer In The Dark
09. Supercut
10. Liability (Reprise)
11. Perfect Places

Not sure how I feel about 'Liability (Reprise)' as well as the normal version when it has yet to fully hit me like 'Green Light', but otherwise still really hyped!

Oh yesss, Pure Heroine is one of my favourite albums of all-time. Team is my personal favourite track but I assume you've heard that. My other personal picks would be Glory and Gore, A World Alone and 400 Lux but you really should enjoy the album as a whole (it's only 10 tracks after all too!) and once you love that, treat yourself to the other brilliant tracks on her EP/Deluxe edition wink.gif Bravado is my personal favourite non-album track.

Predictions for this then? I'd like to say 20k is doable. If it manages that then it could be enough for #1. Although I don't know who else is releasing that day.

6 DAYS

Posted by: cqmerqn 10th June 2017, 04:15 PM

Pure Heroine debuted at #4 with 18,294 here in the UK. I think similar numbers for Melodrama.

01 Green Light (12)
02 Sober (11)
03 Perfect Places (10)

She's releasing the same day as Royal Blood so I think #1 is out of the question, I think they'll sell a lot in the first week off the strength and hype of their first album.

Also, Sober is amazing and could easily be one of her best album tracks already. This and Perfect Places have hit me SOO much more than the first two tracks we heard from the album. So buzzed for this!!!1

I got it last night and had a listen, it is much stronger than I expected it to have been... I really like the sound of Glory and Gore and A World Alone on first listen through, aside from Team which was always my favourite of hers at the time. The production feels ever so slightly light hearing it after the newer material but I think it has room to grow, I like the general open sound of the simplicity.

I'm glad it surprised you and you ended up enjoying it, Dandy! You clearly have taste in Lorde music too with the highlights you picked out heehee.gif Hopefully you'll continue to revisit it in the future too, I think it'll make a great double feature with Melodrama once it's released. As you said, one is a bit lighter and one is sounding a bit darker so I think they'll complement each other really well. I'm so glad we're finally getting this album in under a week w00t.gif

I think this would have fared better with a surprise album release like Frank Ocean. The campaign has been so unnecessarily long, which is a shame as the music is so good.

Posted by: MELODRAMA 14th June 2017, 11:41 AM

OKAY ONE LAST POST I PROMISE BUT LET ME DO MY THOUGHTS ON THE WHOLE ALBUM

okay i'm not even going to bother rating them because they're all at least 9 or above if i'm being HARSH. as a body of work this is absolutely beautiful, it's been absolutely worth the wait since PH.... she's going to be such a huge star i'm so PROUD. this album is beautifully mature, diverse and has SUCH euphoric production (it's very pop!). it's without saying on first listen this is already album of the year for me and i expect it'll stay with me for a long time. also i'm expecting this to pick up SO MANY AWARDS, there is zero filler on this

track by track thoughts:

green light // still my absolute jam, a beautiful summary of the album
sober // she f***ing did that (ya'll know my love for this already)
homemade dynamite // boom
the louvre // I'VE BEEN SO READY FOR THIS after hearing comments after the listen through and it didn't disappoint, absolutely unique JAM
liability // beautiful
hard feelings / loveless // oh my GOD A MOMENT!!! the beautiful instrumental in hard feelings kills me and the loveless transition is v unexpected, but actually kinda works? i saw some comments saying they'll split it into two but actually i like it as it is! lyrically incredible, the juxtaposition is amazing
sober II (melodrama) //okay i've been quite sceptical about a part II of two songs on this album but wowwwww. i saw a live performance of this which was f***ing WONDERFUL so have been intrigued to hear this and jesus christ the STRINGS, a completely new song on it's own yet sober's tear your heart out sister, a perfect namesake for the album. it's definitely an interval type track but works so so well
writer in the dark // oh shit i wasnt expecting a track like this on the album???? a ballad on acid, she sounds absolutely amazing and this just has that CLASSIC feel to it, can't wait to hear this performed
supercut // green lights pop cousin, this is such a cute little summer anthem!! (i say cute little it's POWERFUL POP) one listen thru and i already just want to scream the lyrics out a car window. the little scream before the middle 8 is absolutely f***ing everything
liability (reprise) // OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH SHIT!!!!!!!!!!! SUPERCUT INTO LIABILITY REPRISE!!!! WIG SNATCHED!!!! this is not what i expected at f***ing ALL
perfect places // absolutely perfect stunning album closer

Shall stream it on Spotify when the clock hits midnight, only the second time I have done that this year after The xx's new album soooo the excitement is real *.* Kate Bush vibes on one of the songs already sounds all kinds of incredible

Loving this. 'The Louvre' and 'Hard Feelings/Loveless' are my current favourites but it's all such a great standard, so much has gone into it. 'Writer in the Dark' is so Kate Bush, love it.

okay I got to The Louvre and HAD to post something.

Isn't it THE BEST SONG OF THE FUCKING YEAR? HOLY SHIT. I waited for a smash but did not expect to be blown away so goddamn hard!!!

The chorus is perfection, the BROADCAST THE BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM AND MAKE 'EM ALL DANCE TO IT parts are lush, the final minute is so special too.

This is my album of the year so far

I love how she references lyrics and themes from Pure Heroine and towards the end of Melodrama she's even subtly referencing lyrics from earlier in the album. It's all so rich

f***!!

one of the highest rated albums of all time. Adeles 25 only managed a rating of 75 on metacrotic

Posted by: Cremey 16th June 2017, 07:08 PM

'25' wasn't that critically acclaimed though... and this is still early days. I expect it'll stay pretty high though.

Posted by: Jonjo 16th June 2017, 07:52 PM

Listening now. Kinda have to as it's a part of my job to talk to customers about what they're buying laugh.gif I'm really not a Lorde fan, so this should be interesting. 'Green Light' was a pleasant surprise but lets me down a bit and 'Perfect Places' is probably my fave Lorde song to date. 'Sober', I don't "get" the fuss with.

07.5 - Green Light > Not terrible. I just feel like it lacks the punch in her vocals on the chorus. The production is great though. <
06.0 - Sober
05.0 - Homemade Dynamite
08.5 - The Louvre > THE ENDING THOUGH *.* <
06.0 - Liability
07.0 - Hard Feelings
05.0 - Loveless
06.5 - Sober II (Melodrama)
08.0 - Writer In The Dark > This is lovely. The production is stunning! <
07.5 - Supercut > This gets better as the song goes on! <
07.0 - Liability (Reprise)
09.0 - Perfect Places > I already feel like this is the most underrated song on her album. <

---

Some really nice stuff on here, mainly in the production of it all and considering I'm not a Lorde fan I'd say this ranking and rating is a success! Some might grow on me, but I didn't hate it as much as I thought I would. Ultimately, I just don't "get" the mass appeal with her and I doubt I ever will. I just find her voice unlistenable at times. Sounding bored and miserable most of the time is not my thing.

I shall keep the album "downloaded" so I can listen to it a few more times and hopefully have more of it grow on me! I really think 'Perfect Places', 'Writer In the Dark' & 'The Louvre' could become "essentials" in my playlist!

---
Oh and 'Homemade Dynamite' is overrated to f***. Like, seriously! I found that pretty bland and forgettable! laugh.gif

Posted by: Liаm 16th June 2017, 09:47 PM

It's 90 on Metacritic now but still the 4th highest of 2017 and top 50 in highest rated overall! I am SO happy that she's slaying everyone with this masterpiece wub.gif

Posted by: Brer 16th June 2017, 09:49 PM

Listening with Jade rn (my plan to listen last night got a bit derailed mellow.gif) - 'Homemade Dynamite' is INCRED, think I actually already like it even more than 'Green Light'! And 'The Louvre' is so pretty, especially the outro heart.gif might try and do a lil rate at the end if I don't just feel like saying 10/10 best song ever for every song xx

Posted by: mdh 16th June 2017, 09:56 PM

Hi

I love Lorde

Bye

Posted by: Jade 16th June 2017, 10:17 PM

Very impressed as I expected to be wub.gif 'Perfect Places' is my favourite I think (it does have the advantage of like 20+ plays tho), but either 'Homemade Dynamite' or 'Writer In The Dark' have the potential to overtake it. The similarity to Kate Bush in the latter really is uncanny! Which is a very good thing *.* 'The Louvre' also slays hard. The production and lyricism is once again stellar from her throughout. Must get this on vinyl ASAP!!

Posted by: Brer 16th June 2017, 10:42 PM

CONTROVERSIAL OPINION ALERT

I think 'Perfect Places' is actually my least favourite on the album mellow.gif #bradearenotthesameperson. The rest of it is soooo good but I'm not getting too much out of that comparatively, I'm actually pretty glad I didn't listen to it before the album release cos I feel like it might have lowered my hype for this a bit ;o

Quick rate trying not to be too overly hyperbolic ~

11/10 best song ever 'Homemade Dynamite' (hitting me so hard on just one listen, I really hope this is a single!! Shame if it's true that it was going to be but got shelved due to the Manchester bombing :'( the little explosion noise she makes near the end is so cute)
10/10 'Green Light' & 'Liability' (advantage of having heard them more than once obvz, I think 'Liability' is still pretty underrated!)
9.5/10 'The Louvre', 'Supercut' & 'Writer In The Dark' (all could easily become 10/10 with more listens, 'The Louvre' and 'Writer In The Dark' in particular sound like they'll grow more - the Kate Bush influence on the latter is very apparent *.* 'Supercut' sounds the closest to a 'Green Light' clone on this album, I'm so glad it didn't end up being a full album of that as I feel like it could have got a bit boring but this one was done very well)
9/10 'Sober II (Melodrama)' (the trap production *.*)
8.5/10 'Sober'
8/10 'Loveless'
7.5/10 'Liability (Reprise)' (a bit of Bon Iver vibes here) & 'Hard Feelings' (the instrumental near the end really saves this one!)
7/10 'Perfect Places' (don't crucify me pls xx I hope this will grow on me but atm feels like this wasn't a great single choice, 'Homemade Dynamite' (Manchester notwithstanding) and 'Supercut' and even just properly pushing 'Sober' instead would all seem like far better options?)

Gonna do a second listen now anyway because there were a few songs here that sounded like they need more than one listen to fully appreciate. It's all sounding pretty fab tho. Yas quen

Posted by: Brer 16th June 2017, 11:09 PM

2nd listen 'The Louvre' is already hitting me way harder as I hoped. Think I actually prefer this to the singles as well. heart.gif

edit: also make 'Sober II (Melodrama)' a 9.5/10 wub.gif

edit2: 'Perfect Places' is growing on me, I'll revise it to 4th worst on the album (ahead of 'Loveless', 'Liability (Reprise)' and 'Hard Feelings') xx not a bad song on here tho, I think this album will grow to actually be a bit better than 'Pure Heroine' on the whole <3

updated album rank: Homemade Dynamite > The Louvre > Green Light > Liability > Writer In The Dark > Sober II (Melodrama) > Supercut > Sober > Perfect Places > Loveless > Liability (Reprise) > Hard Feelings

Anyone else wish that 'Sober II (Melodrama)' was the album closer? The way it ends and fades out would be the most perfect way to end the album.

My only other complaint about the album is that I just wish they made 'Hard Feelings' and 'Loveless' different songs. I can't help but feel that 'Loveless' somewhat stalls the wonderful mood that 'Hard Feelings' builds up.

Apart from that, the album is so brilliant. After letting it settle in I would rate it now as follows:

10.0 Green Light
08.5 Sober
10.0 Homemade Dynamite
09.0 The Louvre
08.0 Liability
10.0 Hard Feelings
07.0 Loveless
11.0 Sober II (Melodrama)
08.5 Writer In The Dark
10.0 Supercut
09.0 Liability (Reprise)
10.0 Perfect Places

I quite enjoyed the debut album but this is a fantastic album wub.gif a quick rank:

1. Green Light
2. Homemade Dynamite
3. Liability
4. Sober
5. Perfect Places
6. The Louvre
7. Sober II (Melodrama)
8. Supercut
9. Liability (Reprise)
10. Writer in the Dark
11. Hard Feelings
12. Loveless

The top 8 are all really great, less fussed with the bottom four right now (and I echo the sentiment about how it'd be better for Hard Feelings and Loveless to be separate, even if they're my two least faves).

Interesting comparison and mentioning Taylor, Lorde has compared being friends with her like "having a friend with an autoimmune disease".

Been listening to this album the past couple of days - whilst it's not the life-shattering experience it has been for others, I do find this a very solid album with some truly great moments. 'Green Light' remains my favourite as it's one of 2017's strongest pop songs with such a huge burst of euphoria which is hard to find in music now, but the likes of 'Writer in the Dark' and 'Supercut' have immediately taken to my heart. I adore the Kate Bush-lite vocals on the former and they are absolutely breathtaking in that live acapella clip Liam posted.

I agree with Bre that 'Liability' seems pretty underrated. When I first heard it, I remember it stopping me in my tracks and I was just caught up in the raw emotion of it all. 'Perfect Places' is a great album closer and I hope it can do something as a single.

Controversial but 'Sober', 'Homemade Dynamite' and 'The Louvre' aren't hitting me in the same way they are everyone else. They're good songs, of course, but they make the second half of the album generally more exciting for me. Definitely got the chance to grow on me, though.

Posted by: Bré 21st June 2017, 12:36 AM

I think 'Liability' has actually possibly even overtaken 'Green Light' in my faves - it sounds so good on the album, the run of 'Homemade Dynamite'/'The Louvre'/'Liability' is so perfect wub.gif

I love Liability and can see it taking over Green Light as my favourite if I listened to it more, but I'm obsessed with Green Light at the moment. It's close to matching "Remember Me" as my favourite song year to date! wub.gif

Songwriting failures?

From memory, I wouldn't say any of the songs match the level of production of 'Green Light' (although 'Supercut' is kind of like a more subdued version of it). A lot of the album has, say, less in-your-face production if that's what you dislike about 'Green Light', and I know I've found myself discovering new little things about the productions with each listen.

I'm enjoying some tracks on the album but overall I can't say I'm loving it as much as other people on here. However it has made me want to listen to her debut as I've only heard the singles from that!

'Writer In The Dark' is definitely Kate Bush-inspired, love it!

Posted by: Bjork 23rd June 2017, 01:56 PM

Even Lorde admits Green Light has an unusual structure, thats what Max Martin meant, not that it's a songwriter's failure... he said the same about Lana del Rey's Lust for Life, it's cos the songs have an unorthodox song order, with a pre-chorus that is almost a chorus

a songwriter's failure is when you rhyme "I don't want to see a ghost/I'd rather have a piece of toast" smile.gif not this...

Do you realise that he said it wouldn't be a hit BECAUSE it supposedly has problems? So the things you said don't quite go together if you choose to jerk off to his point of view.

Max martin does not exactly know anything about innovation or writing truly interesting memorable songs anyway. His shit still has a formula and he's so not as relevant as he used to be. Lorde was right to shut him down.

Obviously there's not one dull moment to be heard here. On first listen the songs that stood out were 'Sober' (which I'd heard once before) and 'Liability (Reprise)', but what I liked most was the overall sequencing and especially the gradual buildup from 'Supercut' to 'Liability (Reprise)' to 'Perfect Places' - which I never would've expected at the end of the tracklist but WHAT a moment to end on! wub.gif All the songs are growing on further listens, I'd say 'Supercut' is growing on me faster than the rest. I could not be happier with this album and I'm elated to see it at #1 in the US!

Supposedly a new single version of Homemade Dynamite feat. Khalid, Post Malone & SZA is coming.

Not sure if this is true or not but I'll go with it being true cos I remember there was rumours of a Khalid HD feature about a month ago!

Posted by: John-James 13th September 2017, 08:41 PM

I'm here for Khalid & SZA but Post Malone...really? It seems like they're trying to help this take off in the US as all 3 are pretty hot right now

Posted by: THEO. 13th September 2017, 09:34 PM

Lorde really works best on her own. If she's going to go for features, I'd prefer a stand-alone single like "Meltdown" which is actually really good but adding three vocalists to an existing song really will be too many cooks.

I assume Post Malone is on the track because he and Lorde are on Republic.

Either way, I'm looking forward to this.

I mean Post Malone has had a pretty massive hit single recently and a reasonably successful album. He's a more 'relevant' name from a chart perspective than SZA at least (but all 3 of the features have had hit singles and high selling albums recently in the USA).

Posted by: Jade 14th September 2017, 02:01 AM

Post Malone's debut album Stoney has reached #6 in the US and certified platinum.

He has had one top ten and one further top 20 hit in the states.

All three features have been more successful with their recent albums in the US than Lorde, this is like dream team of 2017 for her new single.

This would've been perfect without Khalid.

SZA and Post Malone suit it incredibly well, especially Post Malone!

Posted by: Davidson 14th September 2017, 09:56 PM

I like Khalid but he really didn't do well here at all. SZA and Post Malone both have great parts.

Posted by: Josh! 15th September 2017, 01:43 PM

I was worried that the remix might sound a bit messy and over-crowded but it does really work. I actually think Khalid sounds most at home on this but all three additions slot in pretty well and hopefully the added star power can make this a hit of sorts.

I think I'll probably still go back to the original mainly though as it was pretty perfect to begin with and this new version doesn't have enough Lorde for me heehee.gif

Posted by: Brébino 15th September 2017, 05:57 PM

This remix works pretty well, I was kind of struggling to imagine how a Lorde/Post Malone collaboration would sound but his part does actually fit in fine (though probably the weakest of the 3 features for me, I really liked SZA's verse + I love the Khalid/Lorde chorus *.)

Overall not really an improvement on the original or anything but it's good enough for what it is!

Posted by: Dexton 15th September 2017, 11:33 PM

I actually really like this, I wouldn't say it's entirely better than the original but I prefer the remix personally. Mainly because without the three features this would likely not have any chart success anywhere, which is fully deserves - features or no features. A fav from the album heart.gif

Posted by: THEO. 16th September 2017, 11:46 AM

So having finally listened to the remix, it's completely sucked the life out of the song for me. Lorde is barely featured and they completely cut out the final chorus after "Now you know it's really gonna blow"?! What a joke sad.gif

Like what exactly is a Post Malone? Are we living in a post-Malone world? I honestly could not think of a less relevant artist to make her more relevant x

Just ha at me x

This surprisingly charts at #82 this week! Already slaying "Perfect Places" laugh.gif sad.gif Hopefully she'll time the video release right this time (if there's going to be one) and Radio 1 will back it up. Still sticking with the original though.

Posted by: cqmerqn 24th September 2017, 08:20 PM

Anyone seeing her on tour? I really want to go but tickets have sold out and 3rd party sites are so expensive sad.gif

Posted by: UltraReputation 24th September 2017, 08:23 PM

nope its so irritating literally if she was performing just a couple of weeks later I would've been able to go sad.gif sad.gif

Posted by: Josh! 24th September 2017, 09:14 PM

I saw her live in Brixton a couple years back and she was absolutely phenomenal. I won't be seeing her this time as I have a few artists I'd like to see for a first time really (and now living in a city hopefully makes this possible! cheer.gif) but I would 100% urge people to go if they can.

I imagine the Melodrama songs would add to the set list immensely too (I'd love to see Perfect Places & Writer In the Dark live especially) wub.gif

Posted by: KWEEN_DEE 25th September 2017, 07:43 AM

Sadly the clashing of her & other events means I can’t go! But I saw her at R1 so I’ve seen some ‘melodrama’ tracks brought to life.

I was at the Manchester concert tonight, not a *massive* fan of her but she’s great to watch live!

She didn’t do Homemade Dynamite, I’ll be interested to see if it was a Manchester-only decision - she also made a heartbreaking speech about the Ariana incident heart.gif - or if she’ll avoid it altogether. I imagine it was just a Manchester set-list decision.

^How bizarre. She's performing Live Lounge tomorrow and I would've assumed she would perform that but maybe she'll do "Green Light" instead as her 'current' track?

I would have loved to have seen her on tour but I already saw her at Glastonbury which was a *.* moment (and felt like a self contained Lorde concert) although I barely knew Melodrama at the time. Does she use the staging with the see-through tilting box?

Posted by: Bjork 28th September 2017, 06:51 AM

she needs the video now, not in 3 months like perfect places

People actually set off a bomb using Homemade Dynamite in London like 2 weeks ago, so I think this'll be the reason she didn't sing it.

Yes I know but all it takes is a little speech before she sings it to excuse herself for any possible offence.

If it's such a problem for her to have a song with that title, they should have thought twice before releasing it as a single.

Posted by: THEO. 28th September 2017, 09:55 PM

Anyway,

She did perform "Green Light" along with a cover of "In the Air Tonight" - it wasn't my favourite live performance of hers and the cover wasn't her best either, oops.

So much for doing the "latest single"... should've been Perfect Places at least laugh.gif

I wouldn't have minded so much but the fact most artists have done three songs minimum and she only did two really annoyed me.

The problem I have is that she never really expands her vocal range. While there has been clear artistic progression, some of the songs aren't strong enough to win over me.

I will give her the credit of creating an album that is more endearing than the last one.

She doesn't need a winter ballad and the album is perfect as it is. She's clearly an indie fave and not a singles artist, Royals convinced people otherwise.

I just look forward to her pushing her artistry further in the future.

I think a "Christmas single" - with exception of the big guns - is a thing of the past. It would be pointless for someone like Lorde, as big as she is, to release a wintry sounding single because that isn't going to make the difference to her selling in this day and age.

Israel’s ambassador to New Zealand has invited Lorde to meet him after the singer cancelled her concert in Tel Aviv.

Posted by: cqmerqn 1st January 2018, 11:35 PM

Not sure which country, but there has been a double page article about her in the newpaper in Tel Aviv? It really isn’t nice at all. Poor Lorde :/

Better news... Royals is now DIAMOND in the US!

Posted by: mdh 2nd January 2018, 08:39 AM

basically she cancelled a show in Israel and the Israeli embassy in New Zealand wrote her a latter saying they were upset with this and they wanted to talk to her about it in person (which was a very fair reply tbh, you can see it on Twitter) - but then one of the big newspapers from the capital of Israel suggested it was some sort of hate protest against Israel from the western world, which is complete bullshit.

Posted by: Brett-Butler 2nd January 2018, 03:02 PM

Lorde is free to play concerts wherever and wherever she wants, and to change her mind if she doesn't want to play in a particular country for whatever reason. Having said that, if she cancels a gig in Israel on "human rights" grounds, yet is still booked to play two concerts on her tour in that known bastion of free expression, Russia, then it does open herself up to accusations of double standards.

I think it's her manager who made the decision instead of her own? I'd imagine at her age, everything pretty much managed by her record company.

The irony is that right after the concert was cancelled, Lorde tweeted saying that hopefully everyone can dance together in the future.

Well, she just cancelled something that would help achieve that goal !

A crazy idea here - if I were Lorde, I would situate the concert stage right on the Gaza border of Israeli settlement and the Palestinian territory. It would send a message of inclusion (since Palestinian could also attend) and give a giant middle finger to the BDS movement.

Posted by: blacksquare 4th January 2018, 02:10 PM

I am with her on this. Russia continues to get sanctioned by the international community - Israel less so. She's spreading awareness and being far braver than most people in her position. We'll see if she cancels the shows in Russia.

Posted by: blacksquare 4th January 2018, 02:19 PM

I'm still so bothered with the handling of this album. I really think she was in the position for a cult-like Frank Ocean drop instead of trying to navigate a very standard album campaign in 2017. She was clearly not a singles artist, and Royals really tricked people into thinking that. Did they expect Green Light to be a massive hit? It sounds massive, but it's not exactly the most chart or streaming friendly track.

Releasing Green Light the same week as Ed Sheeran was unfortunate, and then the long wait until the album... Eek. Would have loved Green Light and Melodrama to have dropped together, all the hype from the critics, it could have pushed it better than a traditional rollout. Even promoting Perfect Places over the autumn could have been good.

They basically messed up.

Posted by: Bjork 6th January 2018, 09:14 AM

the album campaign was super messy
releasing perfect places a couple weeks before the album but releasing the video like 4 months later when the buzz had gone
not putting a video for homemade dynamite etc etc

Posted by: Jacob~ 13th January 2018, 02:38 AM

This may be a personal gripe because I pay next to no attention to charts any more but who cares? Singles charts seem to be getting more irrelevant by the year. The album got to #5 in the UK, #1 in the US, sold hundreds of thousands of copies (in this age of streaming) in many different countries and received near universal critical acclaim. I think she's doing ok. laugh.gif

Posted by: Bré 13th January 2018, 10:10 PM

She did well to have a hit as big as 'Green Light' again tbh, she's not a singles artist ('Royals' and to some extent 'Team' aside).

Posted by: cqmerqnita 13th January 2018, 10:25 PM

She’s like SZA but sells. SZA is very critically acclaimed so it doesn’t matter how much she sells.

Lorde is critically acclaimed and manages to sell very well, so she has the best of both worlds.

SZA's album did pretty well in the States as well tbf.

Posted by: Bjork 13th January 2018, 10:43 PM

Posted by: Bré 13th January 2018, 11:09 PM

She's definitely more than 'moderately' acclaimed, 'Melodrama' has a score of 91 on Metacritic and has been top 10 in a ton of critics' end of year lists.

Posted by: blacksquare 14th January 2018, 12:04 AM

I would have agreed with moderately acclaimed until released the (very close) third most acclaimed album of the year.

It has, gold and I don't think Melodrama has been cerftified laugh.gif Although US album certifications are skewed as they include the stupid equivalent sales thing, so it is probably gold from streams and sales of Love Galore and The Weekend, which are platinum. I really don't get the comparison anyway, both criticially acclaimed albums but they aren't similar genres or at similar points of their career.

Ooh that version is actually better than the original for me! I found the 'Homemade Dynamite' remix to be a massive disappointment so hooray for one reworking from this era being worth it. 'Homemade Dynamite' is my 11 from this album though, whereas 'Supercut' is 'only' an 8 so it had more room for improvement I guess.

It's one year since green light today!! A modern classic <3

Posted by: Dexton 3rd March 2018, 12:23 PM

It’s so incredibly annoying that the Homemade Dynamite remx flopped. Post Malone, Khalid, and SZA have all had at least 1 Top 5 hit since Homemade Dynamite and I am certain that if she released it now, it would stand a chance at being a huge hit. Lorde has been repetitively screwed over her whole campaign, not necessarily to anyone’s fault, but she could’ve had much bigger hits than she has done which is a shame sad.gif

Posted by: cqmerqn 3rd March 2018, 02:13 PM

If the HD Remix was released AFTER Rockstar, then it probably would’ve been a hit!

Yes! I absolutely adore Perfect Places and I agree that trio of songs was awesome to end on. Also yes I wished she had done YFB but I'd been looking at her previous festival setlists and that seems to be the hit that she drops so I was expecting that. I loved The Louvre. The crowd were also SO into it, she really is an albums artist.

Posted by: UltraReputation 16th June 2018, 12:03 AM

And this has now been out a year!!!! Still such an epic album that I go back to all the time <3 <3

If I was to rank this now I think I'd go:
1) Green Light
2) Perfect Places
3) Homemade Dynamite
4) Supercut
5) Sober
6) Sober II (Melodrama)
7) Liability
8) Writer In The Dark
9) Liability (Reprise)
10) The Louvre
11) Hard Feelings/Loveless

Every song bar HF/L is still 10/10 minimum for me and HF/L is still 9/10 *.*

Posted by: Bré 16th June 2018, 02:35 AM

1 year since I had to cancel my plan to listen to this the second it came out because I accidentally headbutted a doorframe and nearly gave myself a concussion magic.gif (lol)

1 The Louvre 15/10
2 Liability 11/10
3 Homemade Dynamite 11/10
4 Writer In The Dark 10/10
5 Green Light 10/10
6 Sober II (Melodrama) 9.5/10
7 Supercut 9/10
8 Sober 8/10
9 Loveless 7.5/10
10 Perfect Places 7.5/10
11 Liability (Reprise) 7/10
12 Hard Feelings 5/10

'Liability' has just grown on me more and more over time, although it's not ever going to overtake 'The Louvre'. 'Perfect Places' has warmed on me a little since the album came out but I still think it's easily her weakest single oops ~

(the El-P remix of 'Supercut' would come in 4th there, shame that went by pretty much completely unnoticed, not that I expected otherwise)

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 16th June 2018, 09:04 AM

I heard 'Supercut' recently and it's SO good. I dare say the best thing she's done?

Posted by: blacksquare 16th June 2018, 01:47 PM

01 Green Light
02 Hard Feelings
03 The Louvre
04 Perfect Places
05 Sober
06 Supercut
07 Liability
08 Writer in the Dark
09 Homemade Dynamite
10 Liability (Reprise)
11 Sober II (Melodrama)

If I had to choose an order, but really I love every single song and think they're all vital for the album. Hard Feelings will forever choke me up, and then that insane middle eight. Perfect. I hate to seem like such a stan but it's probably one of my favourite albums ever at this point - something I rarely say about recent music too.

Posted by: Dexton 16th June 2018, 01:58 PM

I definitely need to listen to this again, I'm pretty sure I've only listened to Perfect Places and Homemade Dynamite at all this year from her ohmy.gif Such a brilliant album though I can't believe it's already been a year!

Posted by: Theo. 24th August 2018, 03:37 PM

This has been BRIT Certified Gold! wub.gif Still holds up so well a year later - I adore every track (minus "Writer"). Hopefully the next campaign's singles are dealt with a lot better than this one's because she really deserves more hitz.
